Chapter 8
(Todd)
His mother's hands were shaking as she floored it towards out of town. She hadn't said another word to him yet..the aggravation was enough to send tremors down his arms. Was it the wolf trying to get out? He glanced back at his mother's pale face and frantic eyes..he didn't want to hurt her by accident. She was already so frail and weak..just like Blythe. They needed him..to change and be strong to protect them.
"Say something." He growled..he couldn't do anything to help if he didn't know the whole story.
His mom his took a big shaky breath and released it.
"I don't have Cancer..I told your sister that." She stopped for a second.."I'm not doing this right. I'm not doing any of this right!" He let her take another shaky breath.
"Our family..,"She started again..
A sudden booming howl came from the woods on the right..so loud it shook the car windows! His mom actually let out a little scream and the car screeched to a halt!
Todd wasn't sure how he knew but the scent was familiar and he knew the wolf wasn't a threat.
"It's just DJ." He said and sure enough less than thirty seconds later his friend came jogging to the car in cut off shorts and sneakers. He opened the back door and got in before slamming it behind him. His hair was windblown and he was panting from the run.
"I'm coming with you." He said firmly in a way that said no was not an answer.
His mom nodded and let out another calming breath. She started the car again and set off too fast.
"You were saying before..," Todd started again.
"It's a lot." His mom whispered.
"We can handle it." DJ affirmed.
His mother gripped the edge of her shirt and meant to lift it up..
"Mom! What are you..?" But then he saw what she was trying to show him. Four shadow dark puncture wounds two on the front and two on the back of her side. They were surrounded by dark flesh and pulsing dark veins that seemed to move..reaching slowly to the rest of her body.
"What the fu..," DJ trailed off in the back but Todd's ears were ringing suddenly. What happened to her? What was happening to her?
She lowered her shirt, wincing as she did so.
"That's why Im refusing my imaginary treatments. A hospital can't help me with this." She paused again. "But Carlisle has been trying..he understands more beyond a regular hospital."
"Is anything helping?" Todd had to ask.
She just silently shook her head.
"What happened? It's obviously a bite."
"Our family..your Uncle isn't your Uncle..I thought he was..had me fooled." Tears started streaming down her face.."The real Reed must be dead."
"So who was that?" Todd gritted his teeth.
"The one that bit me."
(James)
Edward was suddenly next to him.
"Are you here to stop me or help?" James snarled.
"Help."
"Wait!" Blythe called from behind him and the sound of her voice sent his whole body into action..he was doing this for her.
A sudden laughing stopped everyone..her Uncle was laughing an opened mouth cackle that sent shivers down James' spine. He didn't look right..something was happening to him.. his skin.
A piece of flesh on his face suddenly sloughed off and fell to the ground with wet plop! Yet he continued to laugh as more and more of his flesh fell and revealed more skin underneath. His mouth opened and elongated..not like a werewolf's mouth but something longer..sharper and it made him look wicked.
The man's shape was changing not bursting out of skin like wolves but he was morphing..the muscles taking themselves apart and rearranging..
(Todd)
"Who is he?" Todd demanded. "Mom you need to tell me everything right now!"
"He's your grandfather." She took a sharp turn so hard the tires squealed in protest against the pavement. "I think he killed Reed."
"So why was he trying to get us to move?"
"Blythe is special. You guys are too..but she's something else. Only one other person is like her..your Aunt."
"So we find out we have an Uncle..our Uncle is actually our grandfather and now we have an Aunt..tell me she's not actually our Grandmother." Todd couldn't keep the sarcasm out of his tone.
"Actually he killed her..so he could become what he is now. Walking poison."
"Why..?" DJ looked horrified.
"He needed my mother to become what he is..he encouraged Reed to be the same..by killing one of his sisters." Her voice shook a little.
"But he wouldn't do it so he tried to attack all three of us. We had to scatter..and hide our scents somehow. He found us once before.. killed your father Ren..and bit me. I called your Aunt Virginia and Uncle Reed. They both got to me so fast. Virginia knew Carlisle from friends..he has helped them before despite what he is and he told me to come here. He assumed all the other vampire and werewolf scents would hide us." She swallowed hard. She shrugged hopelessly. "It worked for a long time."
"So who is Leo?" He asked recalling her saying 'It's Ren and Leo all over again.'
"Leo was the vampire I was seeing before your dad..they didn't like each other obviously. Leo was reckless and I'm human. After your dad passed Leo found us..but he wasn't into the family life..not that I wanted him anymore anyway. He took off. Haven't seen him since."
"And Blythe and Aunt Virginia?"
"No time..we're close." The sudden smell of ice and decay reached his nose and he stiffled a cough. One look in the mirror said DJ was feeling the same.
(Blythe)
I almost gagged at the sight of his skin falling to the ground. He didn't look like DJ had..fur was sprouting out of his new skin and he was still standing on two legs..he looked like a a werewolf from the movies..the ones that could run on two legs and swipe you with their claws. The mouth was so large and the teeth so sharp they gleamed in the moonlight. It stood taller than the other wolves and looked a lot more menacing.
"What is he?" Edward asked no one and everyone.
Suddenly the creature lunged and ran to James and Edward. The rest I couldn't follow..the creature moved so fast and suddenly everyone in the clearing sprung into action.
Esme was suddenly next to me and we were as far from the house as possible at the forests edge.. she watched the blurred movements anxiously.
"Just stay here with me, Blythe." She said kindly but my eyes were trying to see James..
The creature was holding its own..it's massive arms threw Rosalie and Alice away just in time to grab Emmett and..Snap! Emmett roared in pain and fury clutching his arm which was now bent at an odd angle. His arm was broken! Rosalie screamed in fury and threw herself back at the creature but Emmett caught her mid leap and dragged her away with his good arm.
"Go!" He yelled. "Take Alice and the girls, go!"
She looked horrified for a moment..afraid for him.. but she nodded and the next moment the girls were next to us.
Edward and James were circling him..hunting while Carlisle and Jasper made a half circle farther away..in case he broke through them.
The creature laughed it's breathy laugh..
"I will have her..and if..I can't." His gutteral growling voice reached even us at the treeline. "I'll kill you all.."
Suddenly a huge shape burst into the clearing landing between the girls and the creature..DJ? My mother's car soon followed and screeched to a halt before her and Todd got out. No! They shouldn't be here!
The creature threw back his head and roared in fury.. he bounded towards my mother and Todd at lightning speed.
"James!" I screamed trying to tell him to get to them..help them..
(Todd)
Whatever that thing was..it wasn't a werewolf. One second he was far away and the next..a warm spray hit Todd's face and it took him a second to realize his mother had dropped hard to the earth and it was her blood on his face..
The Blonde man that had been with Blythe that morning was suddenly there leaping on the creature and dragging him to the earth..the thing took a swipe at the vampire but he dodged just in time. Todd didn't care..he fell to his knees crawling to his mother..her eyes were vacant and she wasn't breathing. The thing had literally torn out her throat and now over the sounds of fighting he could hear Blythe screaming for their mother..for him. He couldn't protect his mother but he had to protect his sister.
A growling came from his chest and a tremor so large wracked his body..he felt himself burst from his skin as something powerful. DJ was running over already..connected to Todd through mind and spirit. The creature had the blonde man pinned and was just about to take a chunk out of his shoulder before DJ bashed into the creature so hard he rolled off of the vampire. The sound caused a boom so loud his mother's car windows actually cracked.
The creature popped his arm back into it's socket with a sickening crunch and then he turned and ran into the forest..
I'll kill him..for killing her..Todd ran after his grandfather without another thought.
(Blythe)
I found myself running..the slowest out of them all I was the last to reach..her. Oh God..her throat had been completely torn..she was gone.
"Blythe." James coughed my name. "I..I tried."
"The fault is not with you." Carlisle said softly. My mother's shirt had hiked up a little..there was something..
I shakily reached my hand out and lifted her blood soaked shirt..what the hell was that?!
Every vampire looked confused and shocked. Rosalie suddenly snapped Emmett's arm in place and he grunted in pain.. I could hear the clicks of his bones reforming and healing.
Todd..Todd went after him!
"My brother!" I suddenly said and realized DJ was gone too..he must have went after them both!
(James)
It took him only a second of watching Blythe cry for her mother and now worry about her brother before he was suddenly kneeling next to her. He pressed his lips gently to her forehead quickly.
"I won't fail you again..I'll bring him back." Then before she could protest or beg for him to stay with her..because if she did he didn't think he could leave..took off into the forest following the scents. That little twerp was going to get them all killed..but he followed until he came up next to the pups friend.
The wolf growled in a not too friendly way..recalling their tousle earlier this evening and the fact that he wanted Blythe sent a rage through his chest.
"I think we have bigger problems..don't you?" James asked and the wolf snorted in agreement. They were close..and they were fighting. James and the little wolf reached the cliff and looked below at the drop down. Todd and the creature were rolling and snarling at one another snapping their teeth at each other's throat trying their hardest to win over their opponent.
The wolf next to him leapt down..sliding on the dirt before landing three feet down on his paws. James leapt into the nearest sturdy tree branch and found his way to jump down catlike on the ground.
The creature threw Todd into his friend.. one moment they were both wolves, collided with a thunderous boom the next they were both human again.
The creature roared an ear splitting scream at them that had his ears ringing.
"You killed her! How could you..how could you kill your own daughter?!" Todd yelled and power radiated in the kids voice..
This man was their grandfather?
"The same way I will kill you and your sister..your aunt..and anyone who gets in my way."
Edward and his brothers dropped down from the trees behind them.
"You have..potential. Todd." It's hissing gutteral voice said and then he ran off into the forest again not keen on fighting them all at made to get up and follow but his friend held him back.
"Think of your sister, man. She needs you more than ever now." The crushing guilt over her mother hit James again..he had been so close..enough to watch her terrified look at him over the things shoulder before.. What was going to happen now?
(Blythe)
Waiting was agony..not knowing if that was last time I'd see Todd or James ever again..
I had closed my mother's eyes and was grasping her cold hands in mine..what were we supposed to do now?
Someone dropped down next to me and I looked up to see Todd in a pair of cutoffs like DJ was and standing over us. I grabbed Todd in a fierce hug..letting the relief fill me..he was ok. I looked again my eyes searching..James met my gaze and nodded once.
"Thank you." I mouthed to him.
"We need to find Aunt Virginia." Todd grunted around his tears. Who the hell was Virginia?
"I know some friends who can find her." Carlisle said quietly behind us. I was actually starting to get a headache..
"James..,"Carlisle started. "You and Edward take them home..stay and call us if..if he comes back. We'll find your Aunt. Rosalie..Alice..the body."
The girls came forward to pick up my mother and Todd suddenly growled and blocked the way
"Todd..let them help." I said..sounding utterly defeated.
His shoulders relaxed and he moved..letting the girls wrap my mother in a sheet and carry her quickly into their house.
"Emmett..the car. Scrap it down."
I stood and James was suddenly by my side with his arm around my waist.
"Let me take you home." He said quietly in my ear and I nodded. I just wanted to go home..
I was laying in bed with James sitting up next to me..alert. He had convinced Edward to go home once I had cried my eyes out until I had nothing left and showered..now I was just so exhausted. Todd had passed out an hour or so ago in our mother's room.
"Do you need some blood?" I whispered in the dark.
"Not if you aren't up for it." His voice was strained and I knew he wouldn't ask me..even if it pained him all night. Besides..I needed him at full strength and then some in case our grandfather came back.
"I can." I said firmly. "I want to."
I sat up and gave him my hand..a sharp nick of heat at my wrist and then his ice cold lips replaced the fire and the pain. He sealed the wound afterwards and let his lips lightly trail up my wrist and placed a firm kiss there. It sent pleasant shivers up my spine.
"Do you want me to stay?" He asked..his voice somber and understanding. I felt like I really could get lost in his eyes at that moment.
"Please."
He slid in my bed behind me and put an arm around my waist. That's how I finally fell asleep..
(James)
He heard the paw steps coming rapidly to the backyard and he heard Todd get up and go down the stairs. The scent was his little wolf friend..a five a.m meeting in the backyard? How could James resist? He snuck out of Blythe's bed and ran down the stairs as a blur to look out of the kitchen window that faced the backyard. They were both sitting on the swing set..much like he had seen Blythe do that first dark rainy night. His ears picked up their conversation easily.
"She said Blythe was special. We need to find this long lost Aunt of mine..maybe she could tell us more about everything. About what her and Blythe really are..why they're so special? About what my grandfather is. He said I had potential, DJ. That scared the shit out of me! To become what? Like him?" Todd scoffed angrily. "I'll never become like him."
"You shifted today..you'll be able to protect Blythe now."
"Because I couldn't protect my mother, DJ. That's not something to be proud of." James heard the flick of a lighter igniting and the heavy smell of something teenagers shouldn't have. James found his lip turning up in a small smile..he left them to their illegal activities going back upstairs. James paused back in the bedroom looking down at Blythe. It was the most peaceful she had ever looked. She was beautiful. He slid back in next to her keeping the blanket between them after she shivered from his low body temp.
"I'll protect you." He promised her. He could never walk away from her now..he didn't want to.
"Forever?" She whispered back to him and she caught him off guard with her question and the fact that she wasn't asleep like he thought.
"As long as you want me." He promised and he meant it.
"Is Todd ok?" She whispered..not far off from sleep again.
"He's with DJ. They're both ok."
Her light snore answered him this time.
