Chapter 2: Night of Illumination

MYSTIC FALLS. 2010 A.D.

It was the night of illumination. The veil to the other side had dropped. Something strange was happening in Mystic Fall.

In the middle of the forest, deep into a set of caves, a once dead heart suddenly jolts back to life. A soft thumping noise could be heard as a heart started to beat. Da-thump. Da-thump. Da-thump.

Elijah was dreaming of her again.

Images of her flashed in his mind. Pictures of her walking through the woods. Her laughing face. Her black hair flying all around her as the wind carried it. Her warm brown eyes that gazed longingly at him.

He loved everything about her.

That's why it hurt all the more to think about her.

Being daggered and stuck in a coffin did not change anything.

The scene changed before him and Elijah found himself in the woods of Mystic Fall. It was night but the moon and stars gave just enough light for him to see her face. She was standing in front of Elijah telling him about her day and all he could think about was how her hair looked against the backdrop of the moon.

His hand reached out and tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.

She immediately fell silent, surprised by his action.

"Your hair is beautiful. It's as beautiful as the night sky."

Even in the dark, Elijah could see her blush at his words. She looked down to avoid his gaze.

"Thank you." She murmured under her breath then walked away from him.

Now that he looked back, that was when it all probably started. That was when Elijah fell in love with Faith Mikaelson.

Klaus was so close he could taste victory.

Everything was falling into place now. He had broken the curse and had become the world's first hybrid. In turn, he created and sired his first hybrid. While there were some complications along the way, everything ended up as Klaus Mikaelson wanted it to. Now, he was on his way to hunt down more werewolves and build his hybrid army. Soon, he would be ready to face his father.

He was so close he could taste victory.

As Klaus trekked through the woods, he thought back to the day he left Mystic Falls.

He had just turned Tyler into a hybrid and was planning to leave. Before leaving the small town, he made one stop.

He went to the caves where he and his siblings had spent much of their childhood. Klaus stood outside reminiscing about things that happened a thousand years ago. A time when they were all happy together. A time when they still had Faith. The girl in the woods.

As much as he wanted to go in, he did not let himself do so. He would not go into the caves where her body laid. For the longest time, the spell prevented any vampires from entering but as a hybrid, he could easily enter now. Of course, he could have always compelled a human to retrieve her body. But he quite liked the idea that only he knew where she was. She was his comfort. His home. A place he could keep coming back to and no one else knew. It was their secret.

Over the centuries, he had visited her multiple times. And always, Klaus stood at the entrance, not daring to go in. He would just stand outside. At times, remembering. At times, just talking to her about his life. He missed her terribly. But it wasn't time yet. His father was still on the loose. He could not revive his family yet. He could not go to her yet.

Snapping back to the present, Klaus caught whiff of the werewolves he was pursuing. He couldn't help but smile deviously as he picked up their trail. He was close.

He was on the verge of having everything he ever wanted but all he could think about was her. Seeing her face and hearing her voice.

Her words echoed in his ears: "What was the point of having everything if there was no one to share it with?" She was right. It did not matter if he had everything, something was still missing.

What did it matter now? She was gone. She was forever gone.

Da-thump. Da-thump. Da-thump.

Faith woke up with a start. Everything was pitch black.

She found herself gasping for breath as panic swallowed her up.

Where was she? What happened? Her thoughts raced with fear.

The last thing Faith remembered was Esther stabbing her through the heart. Unconsciously, she reached for her chest. She felt no scars or any signs of a wound, but she could still remember the feel of metal against her chest.

As her eyes adjusted to the dark, she began to calm down. Beneath her body, she could feel the damp, cold ground and realized she was outdoors. Using her hand, she began examining her surroundings.

She could feel rocks underneath her hands. She must be in some sort of underground passage.

Using whatever handhold her hands could find, she pulled herself up. She let out a slight groan as she moved her stiff body.

Her head was pounding and her throat was parched. What she would give for just a sip of water.

Fumbling along, she started searching with her hands for a way out. She felt rather than saw her way though the dark, making her way through wherever she was.

The hope was that she would find some way out as she explored the cave.

She must have walked for hours until she saw a pinprick of light in the distance. Feeling hopeful, she made her way towards the light, her hands still acting as her guide.

As she got closer, she could hear voices. It sounded like two men talking.

"I found something."

"What is it?"

"I have no idea."

Just as one of the man said this, Faith emerged from the dark tunnel into an wider cave.

The man who spoke turned to face her and pointed something bright at her.

The sudden light caused her to blink furiously. All she could see was a blurry outline.

"Who are you?" The man asked her.

Slowly, the blurry figure in front of her started to become clearer. It was man holding a flashlight.

Faith recognized the man.

"Alaric?"

The next moment, she found herself falling and her vision fading.

The last thing she saw was Alaric rushing towards her, probably to stop her from hitting the ground. Then Faith surrendered herself to the darkness as relief washed over her.
