p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="c056a8cfcdededc2519a764e7e134ac8"Peter scorned himself for the fourth time that day, flinching from the pain of the jagged edges of brick splintering under his thumb nail. Carving away at brick with a spoon is such a ridiculous idea but the options were limited if not non-existent. The way the mouldy condensation leaked and dripped down the walls had weakened the limestone enough that if one were to repeatedly scratch and scour it then it would crumble enough for a handful of dust to come loose./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="ddc89441e8b635d116bb83e46135b10f"It would take more years than any single person could devote to actually dig a way out of there of course, and that would just be the cell, never mind the enormous maze of a building and it's many defences including an army of Dementor's. And even then, not one single witch or wizard is going to be able to swim the north sea without a wand. And, even with a wand, nobody really knows exactly where in the north sea Azkaban is located anyhow, except the ministry and it's soul sucking guards./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="3c21be94dbd5fa686a7cd24d6781d555"Perfect for it's purpose and precisely situated far away from a normal functioning civilisation. It's where the worst of people are sent to stew and simmer in their conscience if they even have one at all. But Peter Pettigrew did, as unlucky as it would sound to any normal person. Cowardice doesn't co-exist exclusively with evil. In the same way that loyalty and friendship can be separated by self-service./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="a72502a914013a1b057bd2f16feb7fa5"Peter being the ultimate embodiment of self-serving, had a ferocious appetite for climbing the social ladder. That was how he weeded his way in to anything he ever achieved in life. His friendship with Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and James Potter. Known synonymously as the mischief causing, rambunctious, pranksters The Marauders. And although he was welcomed in to the group with open arms, Peter could never quite shake the feeling that he was the spare part./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="9b40225f5fb0cb41a6d0b38b7a476863"Sirius was flamboyant and outgoing, the room was never quiet when graced with his presence. Remus charmed all those who knew him with his intelligence and compassion toward every living thing, human or otherwise. Likely engrained in to his nature from his long-lived struggle that was kept under tight secrecy within the group. He was a werewolf, and every full moon was spent ferociously tearing at himself in the shrieking shack so not to cause harm to the outside world. Only a youngster when bitten by Fenrir Greyback, his unwillingness to accept his condition only drove him to want to be a better person rather than bitter and cold./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="edc6713040cc8eaa0a2261d4b0034280"Then there was James Potter, notorious lothario and Gryffindor golden boy. Lovestruck by Lily Evans from the very first day he saw he, her auburn hair and green eyes far too enticing to ignore. But it was her sweet nature that saw the rest of the group love her as one of them. Together they flourished and thrived, only falling deeper for each other as the years went on; eventually marrying and together having a son. Harry Potter./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="71b26f4598afc909d6340d2c54a417ae"So when it was revealed that a prophecy had been born along with Harry himself, the Potter's were thrown in to a life of turmoil and danger. Firstly entrusting Sirius with their plan to flee Godric's Hollow, but as a fleeting streak of fate, James would at the last minute entrust Peter with their secret. Convinced to do so by Peter's sly implying that Sirius is a liability. They were more or less sitting ducks, unprotected and vulnerable to Voldemort's attack had the truth not been revealed./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="17a86e4291b446eb114c1c59a2eda07e"That was until through sheer happenstance, or some might say not.. After several months of secret meetings and stolen kisses Remus and Sirius had stumbled back to 12 Grimmauld Place, slightly worse for wear following a bottle of wine too many; they intended to return to declare their relationship to Peter and their other acquaintances. And in good time, when the danger had passed, James and Lily potter. Out of their minds in love and crazy for each other, finally they felt it was time to really make a go of life together. It had been long time coming, and they weren't getting any younger. But the happy affair was cut short by their accidentally discovery and a manhunt ensued./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="cea13eb116c573e1b8c4e992e651d9c3"Peter often thought about them, and if they were still happy. Of course they were, they're Wolfstar. A name coined by Lily's quick wit and humour. James had set up a bet quite some time ago in their eight year at Hogwarts; who would admit their fondness first? Sirius or Remus? Peter wouldn't ever get to find out, having already defected his loyalty from the Order by then. And quite foolishly, leaving a letter of correspondence from Bertha Jorkins behind from his weeks of manipulation and luring her to a steadily weakening Voldemort./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="d9951b38da1426e4e5537d456251fc6c"That was how he was caught. And that was the only reason the Potter's survived to fight another day. After realising that he was losing the wizarding war, Voldemort fled to unknown pastures new to re-assemble a worthy army but that in itself would take time. Time enough for The Marauder's to weed out the spy and see his fall from grace. Peter was found sat alone in an empty shrieking shack, likely dragged their by his own guilt to await his consequences. He expected to be mauled or worse, because as pure and principled his dear friends were, they were also ruthlessly loyal to each other and Sirius once angered is difficult to talk down./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="0ecf47fbc1a28d58491c8b9e1f069036"His expectations were proven false, the group saw only one option fit for Peter. Azkaban. The lawmakers would decide if Peter will meet his maker or not and that for them was enough, out of sight and out of mind. No second chances. And Peter thought he might have felt a little more grateful for their mercy, but Azkaban can treat you worse than death. It did. As it should./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="2a34656a37f51e3290aae7c40e9749a2"At first he spent his waking moments counting the grooves in the hard concrete floor. Then, it evolved in to walking steps around the cell and counting, his legs grew tiresome and that too became a labouring effort. So Peter started conjuring pictures in his head, like little stories that he would mentally project on to the walls. But they too grew in to a bore and some nights even nightmares that taunted him, coming to life in a vivid spectrum of screams and wails./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="fec95dc29310faef88070b4d7c2149e3"And that was just the nights where the Dementor's didn't see fit to keep the prisoners awake as a sadistic pass-time at causing sleep deprivation for their own enjoyment. Screeching and sending unrelenting gusts of wind through the entire prison at ridiculous hours, outing the flames that are the only source of light at all for the most part./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="5f479638d8c33d08eb90e75336db9e6c"Nobody ever cried more than the soul in cell 98 though, precisely four cells down from peter and the last on their row of six. Prisoner 98 had been there as long as Peter had, likely even longer and most nights the harrowing weeps would echo through the bars and fill the hollow cavern. Then there was cell 93, the one that belonged to an anonymous preacher who would on the approach of a solstice, chant unintelligible things that set Peter's teeth on edge for no reason./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="801ea24a431b560f080e2348f784d0d3"It was unknown if the peculiar words were of deeper meaning but they turned the air in to a thick static that just didn't feel comfortable in the slightest, and in a place like Azkaban that was difficult to achieve. But tonight, it was quiet and calm. Nobody wept or chanted and no entities charged through with sinister intentions. Tonight it was just Peter and his thoughts, like every night but this night in particular was different for one reason and one reason alone./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="0fc78d089780a98c1c1613f073b6a34c"Tonight was the night that Peter Pettigrew had decided enough was enough and he shall leave this earth in a shameful un-blaze of glory. His trusty spoon had lent itself to weeks of work on the limestone and in doing so managed to carve out a hook of sorts. And it would be the hook from which his body will hang, suspended in the air by the blanket that had comforted him through the last eight months of uncertainty./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="4d1c5ac4e52478f8c17cfe61ddd55fba"It wasn't difficult at all to tear the shreds of fabric and fashion it in to a noose, it was thin but the fibres strong. Although they didn't feel pleasant on the skin when trying to sleep of course. Lying on barbed wire might have been more ethical. But in the grand scheme of things it seemed silly to dwell on now, after all, it was about to grant him his self-emancipation that he yearned for./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="3c10752544f31ed64ccf2357366ab099"The off-white fabric that had become stained from the constant condensation knotted tightly around the make-shift hook that rested above the cell door. But Peter still checked it, then again, and then once more just to be certain. Deep down it was a subconscious way to drag time out a little longer but once blaringly obvious that it would hold well there wasn't anything else standing in the way of him and death. So he paced a little, just for old times sake./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="aed8f97db47d59762ea149fa3e18b3d5"A last farewell to this tiny space he had called home for the last eight months. It served it's purpose. It kept him dry, somewhat warm, alive, alone, scared. It had one job and it had fulfilled it to an impeccable degree. Even the rickety metal frame that caused the indents on his ribs and knees. Ah, bars. Those lovely cell bars that Peter had such a love, hate relationship with. They kept him trapped inside, but also kept him safe from what lurks on the outside too./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="1cd0f584f5eda4e4bccf97d05b230cae"And taking the spoon he had become so well acquainted with, and the metal cup with no handle, he silently thanked those too. They had fed him and watered him; and his beloved spoon had loaned it's assistance to his endeavour so willingly that it would be unethical to not show it some gratitude. But time kept passing and there wasn't anything else left that he owned that he could praise to. And with that, it was crunch time./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="7d15acb97d15911e6a239cd17f4f840a"This is the hardest part. Thinking about loved ones. Friends, family, even old flames. Peter didn't have friends or family anymore though so they were all old flames in a way. It didn't stop each of them crossing his mind though. Peter thought long and hard about what he might miss the most, wherever the soul goes after leaving this world./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="be9b17651fb94b3b6853e6aa395bdf02"He would miss the way Remus had a habit of hiding everyone's shoes as a joke. God, that would cause some arguments in the Gryffindor tower constantly. "Moony, where are the fucking shoes?!" A question that was heard all too often. Each time they would show up in more and more bizarre places. Naturally, Remus never owned up to it and would protest his innocence until he was red in the face. "Nargles!"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="d706dd2d4d96c5512b3667083e076413"Nobody ever figured out what in heaven's fuck Nargles are. But Remus protested their existence furiously, more than once. He'd surely been spending too much time with Pandora Lovegood. She was rather lovely too, thought Peter. Although he never did get to know her so well./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="06c824cecf38086e644d353818043c62"Of course there was the pilgrimage Peter and Sirius had spent too long talking about. Making plans that would never materialise and dreaming of journey's they would never get to make together. They dreamt of embarking on a conquest of, you guessed it, the female mind. Not for dear Sirius, he was far too besotted with Remus even if he didn't realise how obvious it was. Sirius was to wing man a search, one to find Peter a heart to call his home./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="abe4813809036dcc41d9e1f136809d09"Peter was never terribly good with women. Their fierce nature was a mystery to him. He loved women though, with their pretty faces and lovely hair. Everything about them was soft right down to their skin, and the way they could command a room with their beautiful smiles entranced Peter. He had only been with a girl once and even then it was a short affair that lasted a total of fifteen days. They had indeed kissed and he remembered how her tongue tasted like strawberry sherbet. But it wasn't to last for them, and they parted ways on mutual terms./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="2508761e4f3acc5aee2ba5eec73c240f"Of course Peter was shattered, but he'd never have admitted it aloud. Even if James had caught him reciting Shakespeare whilst hanging upside down on the edge of his bed after drinking a little more fire whiskey than what was appropriate. "You'll find the one eventually mate, just look at me and Lily." That's what James told him and in that moment, Peter had never hoped more for some simple words to come true./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="b5417b39e0315feab98861d46448fad2"Because every sane person alive wanted what Lily and James had. They were practically Gryffindor royalty, the reigning king and queen of the big L word. Perfect for each other in every sense. Peter wouldn't ever get that though, especially since it was those same people he admired for their bond that he would turn to betray eventually. And it hurt James, more than anyone else, that much was clear to be seen on his face when Peter was brought to face his group of comrades after their discovery. The sheer heartbreak as James looked his supposed friend in the eye after trusting him with his wife and son's life, would be etched on to his conscience forever. Not even death would grant him that relief./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="33d77f21b99e6bed9a54e3a309c80e34""You are less than dead to me!" Were the final words that Peter would hear leave his best friend's mouth as the other's all grouped around him. And they certainly cut as deeply as intended, if anything, it would of been kinder to have just wished him dead. But even Peter knew that he didn't deserve such lenience./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="c812f6f3e0917dcfee445492f169a54e""Death would be too good for you!" Those were the words that followed, from Sirius' mouth no less. And in reality Sirius couldn't have been more correct, because death was the easy way out for such a heinous act of selfishness. But selfish is as selfish does, and it was engrained in Peter as deeply as his DNA. That much would always remain true. He was so easily won over by Lord Voldemort's charisma and seductive charm, promises of power and glory that would never come to fruition. Peter was so sold on this false promise that casting his mind to it he might of even sacrificed his own parents if it meant getting what he so greatly desired./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="a665d2c09cda054f50a9cfe5800f989c"It was Dumbledore that really put the final nail in the coffin though, he was more than aware of the prophecy yet did little to nothing in regards of protecting the Potters. Peter saw that so clearly now he was on the other side of the fence again. Absolutely hypocritical for him to think so but he often wondered what good Albus Dumbledore is for anything besides striding around thinking he's brilliant. Powerful he may be, but moral he is not. He and Peter are much the same, selfish. It takes one to know one and boy, Peter damn well knew it now./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="93ba482e27c7d58a8457d6d7debc7206"Perhaps the most upsetting of all the reactions to his disloyalty was that of Lily Potter. She had always been the kindest to him, consistently, without any expectation for her love and friendship. So holding her baby son, as the horror of what could have been was detailed to her was almost unbearable to witness. A mother having to picture the death of her own child, at the hands of a friend, no, a family member. It carried enough hurt to bring kingdoms to their knees, crack mountains and dry oceans. You don't fuck with a mother and her child, ever. Not if you've an ounce of intelligence or value for yourself. Because if Azkaban doesn't have it's way with Peter then Lily surely will./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="c83a338265f4f00dddd6f9cca96f9613"In fact he was forced to sit and hear her wailings sobs of anguish in the next room as James tried to console her, the screams alone were enough to curdle his blood. It was the sound that truly reinforced the weight of his actions. It was the noise of deep seated grief and loss. Because in not losing a son, she had still lost someone who she cared for as a brother. It was a noise Peter never wished to hear again. And it still rang in his ears some nights as he stared at the ceiling, watching water droplets race each other down the limescale in the crevasses./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="90292c556ab1c0a03379f4841f898c56"Likely the same sound that came from Bertha Jorkins as he lured her in to Voldemort's clutches, realising quickly that she was about to be slayed in a manner that were far gorier than one could imagine. It had been so easy, Bertha knew Peter and she had no reason to distrust him. After all he was a school friend. A foolish notion to possess because that was exactly her Achilles heel, trust, in a friend. The most valuable asset that Peter possessed, was that he was on the inside, they'd never see it coming. Nobody did. Although her death meant barely anything now, the Dark Lord would not regain the power he so desperately desired and the traces of Peter's betrayal would die with him./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="c7958916053ce5b94b68ece38a8a7ac7"Because even if he didn't muster up the courage to do it himself, the recent proposal to re-introduce capital punishment in the wizarding world meant that every prisoners life was in jeopardy no matter what. Too many muggles were missing or found inches from death from the Dark Lord's rampage and the muggle minister had come looking to the minister of magic for answers. The International Statue of Wizarding Secrecy was in danger and for that reason alone the punishments on magical folk who par-took in such heinous crimes would receive a higher level of retribution. Peter's ties to the dark army had thrust him in to the forefront of such consequences./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="3d41e8988a3e4bcf0ede15086afd4d0d"Waiting was the hardest part. So he took the decision in to his own hands. Death was always the last destination anyhow, because if the law didn't put him out of his misery then this was always plan b. Peter dragged the rickety old bedframe across his cell as quietly as he could, bringing it to rest just below the concrete hook. And standing on the worn out, thin mattress he coiled the blanket around and pulled the knot tight. Then, he looped it slowly around his neck, three times to be precise; just to be sure./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="6f1a84a6df9dd24f000fe9bf92a3d528"Peter and Death had an unconventional relationship. He had seen death many times but still didn't fully understand it. The Dark Lord and his goons seemed to treat death wistfully, like it was a hobby but for Peter it was never any less shocking or stomach turning. It was that alone that reminded Peter that he wasn't completely desensitised and that there might still be some good inside. So taking a deep inhale it was time to make peace with this world, with himself./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="3b0f963c332796d019119c1cd4943d0b""If I could change it all," he spoke out to the silence. "Then I would. But I can't, I should of considered that before piling all of my pennies in to the wrong pot."/p

Somebody for sure answered his self pitying pleas, and it caught him off guard. So much so that he almost lost his balance and fell off the bed, cementing his fate as it would have meant that he would have nowhere to place his feet and in so would just silently hang without finishing his goodbye. "Maybe I am a baby, what's it to you?"/p

It has to be a figment of his imagination./p

Definitely female if Peter's ears weren't playing tricks on him, rather young sounding too. Not a child's voice but not that of an elder either. Clinging on to the noose, and catching that sore thumb yet again Peter answered wearily. "And what could I possibly learn trapped in here?"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="9ce4e413c7ca3e606e990eb9b55058b1""Well nothing if you do kick the bed away and swing." He was confused by the sudden human interaction but powerless to ignore it or will it away. His mind kept warring with the idea that he was so close to his self-emancipation, if he could just ignore the girl's voice and carry out his plan. "I'm Bebe," she replied. "Bebe Lott."/p

One that he hadn't heard before but it was pretty. It reminded him of golden meadows in the summertime. How he missed summertime and the fun it would bring. Longer days and warmer nights spent around bonfires with whiskey and Sirius's guitar. Just her name alone reminded him of reason's not to go ahead with this and it honestly irritated Peter slightly. "Okay," he muttered, slightly lost for words. "Hello."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="22f25ce1d5028c0f830d06911f0ad2e2"Bebe smiled to herself, her teeth slightly protruding out of her smile. By saying hello and introducing himself she knew for sure that he didn't really want to do it. And he was clinging on to some sort of hope, otherwise he wouldn't have been open to getting to know somebody in the first place. A small victory, but still a victory. Coiling a strand of her scruffy brown hair around her finger, she shuffled up to sit with her back to the wall. Bringing her voice a little closer to the cold cell bars so that she didn't sound as far away. "So, are you going to get down or am I wasting my time speaking to a dead man?"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="0eabef14d968ebb1ccb10cd24a317442"Well, the way that she said it brought Peter to an existential realisation of the permanence of his actions. And that instantly flared a fear that made the ground seem much more far away than it was and the noose tighter. So with a frantic pace he scrambled to release the fabric from his throat and fell down on to his side against the mattress; panting and shaking. Tears quelled in his eyes at the prospect of grazing death with his fingertips, it had cooed and lulled him slyly./p

But after what seemed like an eternity, she couldn't resist the urge to offer some consolation. "That was brave. It doesn't seem like it now but it was."/p

Angry at her for talking him down, and even angrier at her for helping him realise that he wasn't capable. "Well everyone says that suicide is the cowards way out, but its terrifying. And it's even scarier to choose to live when you really don't want to. But that's just my opinion I suppose."/p

It was almost inconceivable that she was the same voice who earlier poked fun at his false last words. She knew that he wouldn't of done it and now she was trying to sugar coat the fact. She was people pleasing, something that Peter was all too good at himself and he recognised it a mile off./p

Bebe knew that she was skating on thin ice with her comebacks but there isn't any other way to communicate with fellow criminals. After all, she didn't truly know what kind of person Peter is. But he couldn't get to her to throttle her even if he wanted to so it would be insane to not take advantage of the fact. Peter recoiled, shoving himself further in to the already painful mattress but found himself blushing at the same time. His cheeks felt hot and his hands even hotter, and not just from the callouses caused by trying to tear the threads out of his blanket./p

Peter found himself propped up on his elbows, intrigued by her blasé admission. "Well I'm not, so does that make me an exception to the rule?"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="98c2460123288aa52b503a75d04b0a94""Maybe it does yeah. Maybe you can be the martyr for all of us and prove to the ministry that they can at least get something right." A little harsh but well deserved thought Peter to himself. It was a ridiculous question to ask because the answer always remains the same. Only self-pitying Peter would be so flamboyant to expect sympathy for stating the obvious./p

Peter asked, hoisting himself to push the bed back against the wall. Seems he isn't going to die after all it would seem a shame for there to be a disorderly mess. "Well I can leave that to your imagination. What would a five foot four girl, with brown hair, brown eyes and slightly oversized teeth look like to you through a thick, brick wall?"/p

Peter found himself smiling once more, and having to focus his eyes on the flickering flame of an oil lamp in the cavern outside so that they didn't involuntarily drop to the floor. "Bebe is an interesting name, not one I've ever heard before. Were your parents drunk when they thought of that one?"/p

Bebe laughed of course, quietly so to keep Peter on edge about it. "It's an abbreviation. I prefer it to my legal name because that isn't any better." Again she threw the finger puppet in to the air before catching it in her palm. "What could possibly be worse than Bebe?" He teased./p

His admission was interrupted by the long, drawn out and painful wail coming from cell 98 again. Both of them were shaken by the noise, it always comes in the middle of the night when everyone feels the most vulnerable. As if prisoner 98 was waiting for ample timing to send the spooks through the place. "Oh shush," called Bebe, "Nobody want's to be here so stop making it harder for everyone! He liked that about her already, she didn't seem to care about being accepted and saying the right thing. If it's on her mind then she speaks her truth clearly. A quality most could only wish to possess. But that much had been clear from the very moment she opened her mouth to respond to him./p

But I can't, I should of considered that before piling all of my pennies in to the wrong pot."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="c82592cb081a2dc41cda4e1316c35af7""It's quite funny really. In trying to escape death I just brought it knocking quicker. My friends, even if you'll never hear me, just know that what I did was never a reflection of you; it was always me. It was always about staying alive, afloat even, it was about the winning team and not only did I lose the war but I lost myself and all of the things I now realise were what made surviving worth it."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="d153a5292a31180c5d1bc203640b3d12"The only response came from the unrelenting dripping sounds and waves crashing valiantly around the rocks that held the prison in place against the sea floor. By now Peter was damn near hoping that something as ridiculous as the wind changing directions might bring him a sign that it wasn't all so far gone. But it didn't, even nature knew what he was./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="63236769b9c167e1502436b5e8c068ba""I'm sorry mother, if you are even out there still and haven't met a fate similar to my own. I still miss the smell of your fresh baked bread that you would make every Sunday morning. And more so the fresh jam that you stacked in glass bottles everywhere." Finally he gave in to the tear now quelling in his strikingly blue eyes. "I turned out just like him I'm afraid, dad, we are both cowards. Thank Merlin I was unable to have a family of my own by now."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="059d19bbea676fd07b1a990f40c82eb3""Oh whoa is me, if I had a violin with me I'd play you a tune."/p

Was this death's trick or did Peter just hear a voice answer his final words? Surely not, and most certainly not with that level of personality or prowess for sarcasm. Maybe the madness had indeed found it's way inside. "And now that I-"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="b20d4ee04bdc245179fd9d5f5473bccb""That I am being a big baby."/p

Somebody for sure answered his self pitying pleas, and it caught him off guard. So much so that he almost lost his balance and fell off the bed, cementing his fate as it would have meant that he would have nowhere to place his feet and in so would just silently hang without finishing his goodbye. "Maybe I am a baby, what's it to you?"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="bd5cab02c6cccadf8e237e474abda3bc""And I'm Bebe, ha!"/p

Peter hadn't heard a joke for so long that he had to think about it for longer than is natural. What sane person finds the right timing let alone the will to make a joke whilst imprisoned in Azkaban? It has to be a figment of his imagination./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="84fc9d3ee6a00bb850ac582fa65abb35"So with yet another 'final' breath, Peter mustered up his courage ready to kick away the bedframe muttering. "I wish things were different."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="1036623e0be773e9c7f00022a3b5257f""But they're not, so either you can run from it or learn from it." The voice called out again./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="8f6e492aa01cd9312735b69678599de0"It was a sweet voice, although it's inflection carried quite a feisty tone. Definitely female if Peter's ears weren't playing tricks on him, rather young sounding too. Not a child's voice but not that of an elder either. Clinging on to the noose, and catching that sore thumb yet again Peter answered wearily. "And what could I possibly learn trapped in here?"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="9ce4e413c7ca3e606e990eb9b55058b1""Well nothing if you do kick the bed away and swing." The stranger's voice was comforting in a way, and it seemed to have a slight wisp to it that suggested a childhood stutter that had been corrected. Although the answer only provoked more questions. "And how exactly do you know that's what I'm doing?"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="eaa117272ec02684bafbbcf67aecab1e""You won't be the first to try and certainly not the last. I've been here long enough to have listened to my fair share of desperate attempts. So I'd be really grateful if you could not put me in that position again since our cells are next to each other."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="9bdc6a419b3a9e6670eb53990661fcb1"But Peter had tried to prompt conversation from at least one person many times to no avail. So why now? And why her? Least of all when she had been this close to him so most definitely will have heard him speaking out to the night. "Have you done it yet?" She asked. "Well, no."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="a1ed04f485daafcdc376ceada12664d2""Good, we're getting somewhere. What's your name?"/p

He was confused by the sudden human interaction but powerless to ignore it or will it away. His mind kept warring with the idea that he was so close to his self-emancipation, if he could just ignore the girl's voice and carry out his plan. "I'm Bebe," she replied. "Bebe Lott."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="4ccf2f5eea6120e65045ae1a3b337293"Bebe, such a strange name.
Tears quelled in his eyes at the prospect of grazing death with his fingertips, it had cooed and lulled him slyly./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="04cc8f08ebb62f6137d58b378e5a97b3"On the other side of the wall Bebe waited patiently for a response from the faceless name, not wanting to push the matter any firmer than was needed. But after what seemed like an eternity, she couldn't resist the urge to offer some consolation. "That was brave. It doesn't seem like it now but it was."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="904e74065719480a3ecbae594cc6b6b3""There's nothing brave about me," spat Peter. Angry at her for talking him down, and even angrier at her for helping him realise that he wasn't capable. "Well everyone says that suicide is the cowards way out, but its terrifying. And it's even scarier to choose to live when you really don't want to. But that's just my opinion I suppose."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="9da060769276089dd0df69c964209a5e"She sounded so whimsical when she spoke, like such insight came naturally to her. It was almost inconceivable that she was the same voice who earlier poked fun at his false last words. She knew that he wouldn't of done it and now she was trying to sugar coat the fact. She was people pleasing, something that Peter was all too good at himself and he recognised it a mile off./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="371345c113c4e8b659961dc54f584864""Keep your opinions to yourself then!"/p

His cheeks felt hot and his hands even hotter, and not just from the callouses caused by trying to tear the threads out of his blanket./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="f267824798ec01e8094102478318838e""And what's your deal then? Why are you stuck in this hell hole?" She liked his voice. It was husky and rich, it sounded as though he had almost certainly smoked in his lifetime. "Oh, you don't need to know that about me. It's frivolous small talk that distracts from the real questions."/p

Didn't you know?" She smirked as the statement rolled from her tongue, her head coming to meet the brick behind her as she cosied on to the not so cosy floor.
Only self-pitying Peter would be so flamboyant to expect sympathy for stating the obvious./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="a1c589aa004e063235714f1801a764ce""What do you look like?" Peter asked, hoisting himself to push the bed back against the wall. Seems he isn't going to die after all it would seem a shame for there to be a disorderly mess. "Well I can leave that to your imagination. What would a five foot four girl, with brown hair, brown eyes and slightly oversized teeth look like to you through a thick, brick wall?"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="06d43c9dc962de6814a9c0c3f296eec9"Peter almost scoffed at her refusal to divulge about her appearance until he realised that she managed to slip it in to yet another question. "I think she'd be rather ordinary looking."/p

Quite frankly mate, you're getting on my tits!"/p

He liked that about her already, she didn't seem to care about being accepted and saying the right thing. If it's on her mind then she speaks her truth clearly. A quality most could only wish to possess. But that much had been clear from the very moment she opened her mouth to respond to him./p

"Hello?"/p

No. It's a mistake," Peter stuttered in astonishment. They can't be talking about her surely. If she had been sentenced to death then she would of fucking said something and not tried to stop him from taking his own life. It didn't make sense, nothing about this was making sense. And even so, they can't just show up and march someone off like this, it's absurd. No it's absolutely barbaric. Yet they still stripped the enchantment from the cell door. "Bebe?!"/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="f7375f4ddbf3f584a00ea72a742efa32"No response came, just little, shallow footsteps as she stepped outwards compliantly. When she turned to him she was absolutely beautiful, even with terror painted on her expression; Peter almost fell in love at the first sight of his guardian angel. Her hair was waist length and a deep shade of chestnut, and she was right her top front teeth were a little large but it would only make her smile brighter. Then her eyes, almost black in colour but glossy with tears that were resting on her lash line. The scars on her legs were visible, hollow purple circles almost as if someone had put their cigarettes out on her skin./p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="2ab6ff283f8e435dbc9761eefdd9689a""Bebe what did you do?" He asked lowly, his heart visibly breaking inside of his chest. The two men looked to her and then to him with no pity as she walked up to the bars still encasing him inside and sliding the small finger puppet out of her pocket, she handed it to him. "I trusted the wrong people. Sorry, I've got to go now."/p
p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 24px; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 24px; padding: 0px;" data-p-id="0bda312b177d08ddc87b911dddd36ba4"A hand curled around her shoulder and yanked her back roughly, a small yelp leaving her lips. "She burnt down her family home with everyone inside and tried to blame it on her father, but liars get exactly what they deserve." Taunted the guy with his grip on her./p

"Bebe!" Peter screamed after her in emotional agony. "Bebe!"/p

And even as his fists curled tightly around the bars in an attempt at rattling and wrenching them open, the splintering ache of his cold and tired bones only further reminded him of the haunting fragility of life. /p
