A/N: Hey guys, I was meant to post this yesterday but it was first day back at uni and all that, so I got distracted. But anyway, I hope you enjoy the chapter.
"Come on, let's go get a some tea, yeah?" The Doctor said softly as he stroked her hair. She had been clinging onto him for dear life for the past few hours, not willing to let go. She hadn't said a word, but her crying had finally stopped.
Kari still hadn't tried to tell him what had happened, and he wasn't going to push her to find out either. Judging from her reaction when she woke up, it hadn't been nice for her. He was just glad that she was awake now, because he had been terrified when she hadn't turned up along with Amy and Rory in the console room when they had all woken up.
When the Doctor had found her, sleeping in his bed, he couldn't wake her up. The psychic pollen had been removed and had left the TARDIS, but she was still sleeping. He was scared that she was going to be stuck in her dream, a dream world that he had created for her. That was another reason why he didn't want to know what had happened, because he was the one who had made it for her.
"Hey, come on, Kari." He whispered to her when she didn't answer him. "We can't stay here all day, the Ponds want to see you, they've been worried about you."
She just shook her head, and buried her head further into his chest. "No, I don't want to go anywhere. I just want to stay here." Kari mumbled.
The Doctor let out a sigh. "Nothing is going to happen, Kari. You're safe now."
"I don't care. I don't want to go anywhere, I don't want to let you go." She said, tightening her grip on him slightly. "I am never, ever, going to let you go."
"Oh, my beautiful, brilliant, Kari. I'm not going anywhere. And I will never let you go either." The Doctor told her, kissing the top of her head.
They stayed like that for a few more hours, and the Doctor was sure that Kari had been drifting in and out of consciousness. Every now and then, her grip would tighten again, before relaxing when she realised he was there.
It wasn't until he heard a rather loud grumbling sound that he knew that they really did have to move now. "Sounds like someone is hungry." The Doctor said, causing Kari to let out a small groan. "No arguments, time to have something to eat, Kari."
"Do I really have to?" She moaned, moving her head away from his chest just a little.
"Yes, you really have to. When was the last time that you actually had something to eat?" He asked her, just wishing that she would get back to her normal self.
"Uh, a few days ago, maybe. I'm not sure." She told him, just as her stomach made another protest, demanding food. "Fine, food. No need to gang up on me." She said, making the Doctor chuckle a little.
Although Kari had pulled herself away from the Doctor, at no point had she let go of him. Her hand was like a vice in his, not wanting to let it go. As they reached the kitchen, they could hear the faint voices of Amy and Rory.
With Kari still holding onto him tightly, he opened the door and smiled at the pair already in the room. "Oh, Kari. You're okay." Amy cried, rushing over to her, pulling her away from the Doctor and hugging her. "We were so worried about you, we didn't know where you were. I'm so glad the Doctor found you."
The moment Amy let her go, she was straight back to gasping the Doctor's hand. "Sorry." Kari mumbled. "I'm okay. I must have jumped just before all this started."
"Well, it's all over now." The Doctor assured her, kissing the top of her head. "You're hear now, that's all that matters. Now come on, you need to eat something."
He led her over to the table and pulled out the chair, letting her sit down. Before he could open his mouth to ask her what she wanted to eat, an unfamiliar noise started to fill the room. Kari's face flushed pink slightly, as she reached into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out her phone. "Sorry." She muttered, looking at the caller ID.
"Go on, you answer that and I'll fix something to eat." The Doctor told her, seeing that she didn't know what to do.
Kari nodded at him before finally answering the phone and putting it to her ear. "Hi, Jack." She said quietly, closing her eyes tightly as she tried to forget the stupid dream world.
"Hey, what's wrong, Princess?" He asked, straight away knowing that something was wrong.
"Nothing. Everything's fine." She replied, her voice still quiet.
"Yeah, right, like I'm going to believe that. What's happened?"
Kari let out a sigh. "Honestly, Jack, everything's fine. It's just been a tough few days. But then, when isn't it when you spend your life with the Doctor."
"Oi, I heard that!" The Doctor shouted from where he was rummaging through the cupboards. Amy couldn't stop herself from letting out a small laugh while Rory tried to shush her.
"So, the Doctor's there, huh?" Jack asked her, chuckling a little himself at the comment that was made.
"Yeah, he's… cooking." For some reason, those words just didn't seem right. The Doctor and cooking should never be put in the same sentence, but they had been.
It seemed that Jack was a little stunned by that as well. "Wait, the Doctor is cooking? Now, did he lose a bet or something? Because when would he willingly cook?"
"He's trying to force feed me, Jack." She told him. Her voice was still quiet, because she really just didn't have the energy left.
She heard the Doctor let out a groan. "I wouldn't have to cook and make sure you had something to eat if you actually bothered to eat yourself." He called to her.
Once again, Jack had heard him. "What's going on, Princess? Why does the Doctor have to make sure you eat? Why have you not been eating? What's going on?" Kari rolled her eyes at the amount of questions that he was asking her.
"Jack, I've just been busy, that's all. I've been pulled from one place to another, I've hardly had time to even sit down. We've all just had a really tough day, it really hasn't been much fun."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Jack asked her gently. He guessed that it must have been pretty rough for her to be acting the way she was, and for the Doctor to have to actually cook to make her eat.
Kari put her head in her free hand. "Not right now, Jack. Maybe later. I'll give you a call soon, I promise."
"Okay, Princess. Just make sure that you do. I miss you, so come and visit soon." Jack said to her, just wishing that Kari really would call him again and explain what had been going on.
"I will Jack, I promise." Kari said, before each of them said goodbye. Her phone ended up sitting on the table, while her head was resting in her hands.
"Hey, is everything okay, Kari?" Amy asked, sitting down next to her and passing her a hot mug of tea.
She lifted her head up, which seemed to take a lot of effort to her. "Yeah, everything's fine. Been a weird and rough few days. I just want to sit down, and shut off for a while."
A few moments later, a plate was put down in front of her. Her eyes made their way up and she found the Doctor's eyes. "One omelette a la Doctor." He said, giving her a big smile.
Kari couldn't help but smile back at him. "Thanks."
She had to admit, she really had been hungry, and what the Doctor had made her was gone pretty quickly. Kari picked her phone back up from the table and put it in her pocket, she never should have just left it there in the first place.
"So, where are we off to now then, Doctor?" Amy asked, seeing that he was happy with the fact that Kari had completely cleaned her plate.
"Oh, I don't know. Anywhere, and everywhere. Why don't we let Kari decide?" He looked over at Kari, and the smile on his face faded in an instant.
"I think it's time you took Amy to Rio." Kari whispered, looking at the golden glow that was starting to surround her. "I'll catch you guys later. Try not to get into too much trouble while I'm gone, yeah?" She said, trying to keep herself together. She wasn't ready to leave them yet, to leave the Doctor. She wanted to stay there, to be with him for just a little while longer. But it seemed like the universe had other ideas.
The Doctor was with her in just two strides. "You behave, try not to cause too much trouble, and I'll see you soon. Okay?" He said to her, his hands against her cheeks. "I love you, Kari." He whispered.
"I love you too." She whispered, as the Doctor kissed her quickly. "Bye, Doctor." She managed to say, before she was completely taken over, her head pounding and spinning wildly.
When her world became clear again, she found herself in a past TARDIS, but something was wrong. She was in the console room, but there was no one there, and everything just felt so, so wrong. "Doctor?" Kari called, looking around a little. But then she heard it, the singing, the singing that always made her cry. "No… no, please, not now." She managed to whisper.
The door opened and a very tired and worn looking Doctor stepped in, leaning on it as he closed it. He looked like he was in a world of his own, and Kari couldn't find it in her to smile at her suited up, converse wearing Doctor.
He finally turned and looked towards the console, seeing Kari standing there. "Kari…" He said quietly, as he took off his long brown trench coat.
She didn't say anything, she just rushed over to him and held onto him tightly. "It's okay. Everything's going to be okay, Doctor. I'm here now, you're not going to be on your own, you will not go through this alone." She told him, holding onto him as tightly as she could.
He buried his head into her hair, something she was used to the next Doctor doing more than him. "You kept your promise. You promised you wouldn't leave me, that if you had to go you'd come back."
"And I'm here, I'm right here, Doctor." She whispered to him, running her hand through his gorgeous hair. "Come on, everything will be fine, Theta. I know it will."
The Doctor pulled his head away and looked down at her. "What would I do without you, Kari?"
She chuckled a little. "Be in a lot more trouble a lot more often. Now, shut up." Kari said to him, pulling his head down and making their lips meet. She knew it would mean a lot to him, their last kiss in a way.
The Doctor was the one that pulled away. "It's started." He whispered, looking at the golden energy that was starting to build around his hands.
"I know, but trust me, Doctor, I know how it goes. I know that everything will be okay, and I'm going to be right here, the whole time. I'm not going anywhere." She knew she had to be strong for him, because this was one time when he really, really needed someone. If she hadn't been there, he would have gone through it alone, and Kari always wished that someone could have been there for him.
"Kari…"
"Shush, it's okay, Theta." She told him, leading him around the console with her. "We'll both get through this, together." She said, holding his hand over the dematerialisation lever and pulling it down together.
The time rotor started up, the soft green hum slightly reassuring to the pair of them. The Doctor looked up at Kari, the tears in his eyes and ready to fall. "I love you, Kari."
Kari swallowed the lump in her throat. "I love you too, Theta." She said, her own tears starting to stream down her face now. "I'll be here, okay?"
The Doctor just looked into her eyes, and said the five words that always broke her heart. Only now, it was about to break both of them that were pounding in her chest. "I don't want to go." He managed to say before the golden regeneration energy took him over completely.
Kari had to move and duck around the other side of the console, before having to avoid the flames that rose up from the console, and the coral beams that were falling down. She was so scared, the TARDIS was going to be so badly damaged and she could feel it. There was pain soaring through her body as the tears constantly rolled down her cheeks.
She could hear the Doctor's painful cries as well. It was hard for him, so hard since he didn't want to go. But there was nothing she could do for him yet, she just had to wait until it was all over. It probably didn't help that several things were still exploding and the fires were still raging in the room.
After another explosion, the screaming she could hear stopped. Kari dared to peek from where she was hiding, and she saw her bow tie wearing Doctor, just not yet wearing his bow tie.
"Legs. I've still got legs." He said, pulling he knee up and kissing it. "Good. Arms. Hands. Ooh, fingers. Lots of fingers." He said, checking ever part of him over. "Ears, yes. Eyes, two. Nose. I've had worse." That comment made Kari giggle a little, she always found it amusing the way he acted during this time. "Chin, blimey. Hair. I'm a girl!" He cried, finding it longer than before and having to check for his adams apple just to make sure. "No. I'm not a girl. And still not ginger." The Doctor mentioned, pulling it over his eyes so he could see it. "And something else. Something important. I'm… I'm… I'm…" He said, tapping at his head with his fingers.
"Crashing you bloody idiot!" Kari shouted at him, finally pulling herself off the ground and running over to him. "We're bloody crashing!" She shouted, just as there was another explosion.
"Ha ha! Kari!" The Doctor cried, grabbing hold of her waist, pulling her flush up against him and kissing her. "My beautiful, brilliant, Kari." He whispered to her, finally letting her breathe.
"Doctor, focus!" She said, slapping his arm. "The TARDIS is crashing back to Earth, and you all want to do is… is… make out?"
The pair of them got thrown around a little, the Doctor grabbing hold of Kari to stop her from falling over. "Geronimo!" He shouted, laughing a little. Kari could help but smile at him, ending up with her laughing as well. It wasn't really a laughing matter, but for some reason she just needed to, with everything that had happened, it felt good to be able to laugh.
A minute later, they were both tossed around, the console sending more sparks and flames high up in the room. Kari managed to grab on just in time, but the Doctor didn't seem to fair so well. "Doctor?" Kari called, looking around the room for him. She had seen him, he had his screwdriver in his hand, and then he just disappeared. Her eyes widened as she remember where he was.
She ran over to the open doors, and saw the Doctor hanging on the edge, his sonic screwdriver clutched between his teeth. "Oh, Doctor. What am I going to do with you?" She asked, reaching down and helping to pull him back into the blue box, just before he smacked into Big Ben.
There was yet another explosion, sending them both tumbling to the ground. "Kari, are you okay?" He asked, as she landed on him.
"Uh, yeah. But I'm just a little worried, I really don't feel like going for a swim right now." She said, just as they were thrown once more. Only this time, they fell, and they carried on falling all the way until they hit the pool. "I said I didn't want to go for a swim." She grumbled.
There was a thump, and Kari knew they must have landed in a very special back garden. When she turned to look at the Doctor, she found he already had the rope with the grappling hook on the end in his hands. He grinned at her as he threw it as high up as he could.
"You feel like a little climbing?" The Doctor asked her, a huge grin still on his face.
She smirked at him. "Do I really have a choice here?" He just carried on smiling. "Well, after you." The Doctor straight away started climbing up using the bookshelves.
They seemed to be climbing for what seemed an age, before the Doctor finally reached the outward open doors, soaking wet and completely exhausted. That was when he noticed a little ginger haired girl standing there. "Can I have an apple?" He asked, getting a confused look from the girl. "All I can think about, apples. I love apples. Maybe I'm having a craving? That's new. Never had a craving before." He pulled himself up on to the edge and looked down. "You okay down there?"
There was some slight mumbling, followed by a few swear words. "Are you okay?" The little girl with the Scottish asked him, looking at him oddly still.
"Just had a fall. All the way down there, right to the library. Hell of a climb back up." The Doctor told her, still looking down and waiting for Kari. She was taking her time to get up, because she knew the Doctor had to speak with the little girl, little Amelia Pond.
Amelia frowned at him. "You're soaking wet."
"I was in the swimming pool."
"You said you were in the library." The little girl asked him, slightly confused.
A voice floated out of the box. "So was the flipping swimming pool!" Kari shouted, hoping that the girl could hear her.
"Are you a policeman?" Little Amelia asked him, watching as he carried on looking down and into the blue box he had climbed out of.
"Why?" He asked, suddenly looking at the girl and leaning forward a little. "Did you call a policeman?"
"There's a crack, in her bedroom wall." Kari called, almost reaching the top, finally seeing the edge of the blue box.
The Doctor looked down at her. "What crack?" He said, before falling off, crying in pain a little.
"Are you all right, mister?" Amelia asked him, just as Kari heaved herself onto the edge of the box. "Who are you? Are you all right?" The little girl asked, looking at the soaking wet woman.
"Me? I'm fine. I'm doing much better than him." Kari said, before falling over the edge and landing right on top of the Doctor. "Sorry."
"Nah, never mind that." He said, before a wisp of regeneration escaped from his mouth.
Amelia just looked at the pair. "Who are you both?"
The Doctor just looked up at her, as Kari pulled herself off from him. "I don't know yet. I'm still cooking." He said, looking at his hands then back at the girl. "Does it scare you?"
"No, it just looks a bit weird." She replied, sounding a little insulted that he could even think that it scared her. Kari had to stop herself from chuckling.
"He means the crack in your wall." Kari said, looking directly into Amelia's eyes. "Does it scare you?"
There was a slight hesitation before the girl replied. "Yes."
"Well then, no time to lose." The Doctor said, jumping up and grabbing hold of Kari. "I'm the Doctor, this is Kari. Do everything we tell you, don't ask stupid questions, and don't wander off." He told her.
"Rule one, don't wander off." Kari warned her, before the Doctor walked straight into a tree. "You okay down there?" She said, looking down at him, tilting her head to the side.
"Early days. Steering's a bit off." The Doctor told her. 'You know, you really are beautiful." He said, just looking at her.
"Okay, I think we need to get you inside before you hit your head. Again." Kari said, helping him up and leading him into the house.
It didn't take long for them to make it to the kitchen, and for Amelia to find an apple for the Doctor. "If you're a doctor, who does your box say police?" She asked, handing him the apple while Kari dried herself off with a towel.
She rolled her eyes as the Doctor took a bite of the apple, before spitting it back out. "That's disgusting. What is it?" He asked, looking at the apple with pure hate in his eyes.
"It's an apple, Doctor. You got it into your head that you loved them. You generally hate them, unlike me." Kari said, taking it out of his hand and crunching on it herself. "Now, I'm going to make this really easy, because I don't want to clean up the mess you are about to make, and I don't want Am… our new friend to do it either." She said, quickly covering up her slip.
The Doctor just raised an eyebrow at her. "All knowing?"
"Oh yes. You don't like yoghurt, or bacon, or carrots. You think beans are evil, and so is bread and butter. So how about you just leave this one to me?" Kari told him, heading straight over to the fridge freezer standing by the wall.
A little while later, the three of them were sitting at the table in the kitchen. The Doctor had a plate of fish fingers and a bowl of custard in front of him, while little Amelia was eating ice cream out of the tub.
"Funny." Amelia said, watching as the Doctor dipped the fish finger in the custard before eating it.
"Am I? Good. Funny's good. What's your name?" Kari was glad that he had finally asked her that, she kept wanting to say her name, to either call her Amelia or Amy.
"Amelia Pond." The little girl said, making both Kari and the Doctor smile.
"Oh, that's a brilliant name." The Doctor told her, watching as Kari just stuck her finger in the custard before putting it in her mouth. He gave her a funny look, and she just shrugged at him. "Amelia Pond. Like a name in a fairy tale. Are we in Scotland, Amelia?" He asked, finally commenting on her accent.
"No. We had to move to England. It's rubbish." Amelia told them, clearly not happy with having to leave Scottland.
"So, what about your mum and dad, then? Are they upstairs? Thought we'd have woken them by now." the Doctor said, making Kari's smile falter for a second. It just reminded her of what had happened, and how now she didn't really have a family.
"I don't have a mum and dad. Just an aunt."
The Doctor simply smiled at the little girl. "I don't even have an aunt." He told the girl.
"You're lucky." Amelia said, before looking at Kari. "What about you?" She asked.
Kari just looked at her, before finding her answer. "Nah, what do I need anyone else for when I have him?" She said, taking a hold of his hand and squeezing it tightly. "So, where is your aunt? She hasn't gone out and left you here all alone has she?" Kari asked, knowing that was exactly what had happened.
"I'm not scared." The little girl retorted.
"Course you're not. You're not scared of anything. Box falls out of sky, man falls out of a box, then so does a woman, man eats fish custard, and look at you, just sitting there. So you know what I think?" The Doc said, all in one breath.
"What?"
Kari and the Doctor both looked at her seriously. "Must be a hell of a scary crack in your wall." The pair of them asked her at the same time.
Once they had finished eating, Amelia took them to her bedroom, and Kari's eyes were immediately drawn to the strange crack in the wall. It was actually making her feel sick just looking at it, and the Doctor seemed to have noticed it. "Kari, you okay?" He asked her.
She nodded at him. "Yeah, just feeling a little sick at the moment." Kari told him, her eyes still glued to the crack. She had seen it before, back on the Byzantium, and it wasn't until now that she realised she had felt a little sick then as well, but hadn't even thought about it.
The Doctor kissed the top of her head, before turning his attention back to the wall. "You've had some cowboys in here." He said, touching the wall and the crack. Kari shifted uncomfortably. "Not actual cowboys, though that can happen."
"I used to hate apple." Amelia said, looking at the apple in her hand. "So my mum put faces on them." She walked over to the Doctor, and gave him the apple.
Kari couldn't help but smile at it all. "She sounds good, your mum. I'll keep it for later." The Doctor said, looking at the face carved into the apple before putting it in his pocket. "This wall is solid and the crack doesn't go all the way through it. So here's a thing, where's the draught coming from?" He asked, getting back to inspecting the wall.
Kari watched him as he whipped out his screwdriver, the slim silver one with the blue light on the end, and scanned the wall with it. "Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey. You know what the crack is?" The Doctor said, looking right at little Amelia.
"What?"
Kari rolled her eyes as she waited for the Doctor to just get on it. "It's a crack. But I'll tell you something funny. If you knocked this wall down, the crack would stay put, because the crack isn't in the wall." He told them both.
"And that's funny, how, exactly?" Kari asked him, raising an eyebrow at him and letting him know she was not impressed with him. "So come on, where is this crack then?"
"Everywhere. In everything. It's a split in the skin of the world. Two parts of space and time that should never have been touched, pressed together right here in the wall of your bedroom. Sometimes, can you hear…" The Doctor didn't say anything else, as he pressed his ear against the wall, and listened.
"A voice. Yes." Amelia told him.
Kari let out a sigh, they needed to get a move on, she needed to be one step ahead of the Doctor. "Prisoner Zero has escaped. Which means that on the other side of that wall is a prison and they've lost a prisoner." She said, taking a hold of Amelia's hand tightly.
"And you know what that means?" The Doctor said, a grin trying to work it's way onto his face.
Amelia just looked at him. "What?"
"You need a better wall. The only way to close the breach is to open it all the way. The forces will invert and it'll snap itself shut. Or…" He trailed off, looking down at the child as he moved her desk away from the wall and the crack.
"What?"
Kari kneeled down, getting at eye level with her. "You know when grown ups tell you everything's going to be fine, and you think they're probably lying to make you feel better?" She asked her, getting a nod in response.
The Doctor looked down at her. "Everything going to be fine." He told her, before taking a hold of her other hand. He pointed his screwdriver at the wall, and the three of them watched as it slowly pulled open, the light from the other side lighting up Amelia's bedroom.
Suddenly there was a huge eyeball, staring through the crack, looking at the Doctor and Kari. It did freak her out, even though she was expecting it. They all kept hearing the same thing as well, that Prisoner Zero had escaped.
"What's that?" Little Amelia asked, slightly scared of the giant eye that was looking directly at them all.
There was a spark of lightning from the crack, before it slowly snapped closed. Kari looked at the Doctor, as he fell backwards. She knew what ad just happened.
"There, you see? Told you it would close. Good as new." The Doctor said, now sitting on the little girls bed.
"What's that thing? Was that Prisoner Zero?" Amelia asked, still looking worried and afraid.
"Nah, that was his guard. But, it did send the Doctor a message." Kari said, watching as the Doctor pulled his black wallet out from his pocket.
"Psychic paper. Takes a lovely little message." He said, before reading what was on the paper. "Prisoner Zero has escaped. But why tell us? Unless…"
"Unless what?"
"Unless Prisoner Zero escaped through here. But he couldn't have. We'd know." The Doctor said, looking over at Kari. Her eyes shifted to the carpet beneath her feet, letting him know that she knew exactly what was going on, but that she wasn't going to tell him a thing.
He charged out of the bedroom, Kari and Amelia following behind him. "It's difficult, brand new me. Nothing works yet. But there's something I'm missing. In the corner of my eye." He said, not noticing the way Kari was staring at one door in particular.
"Oh no, the Cloister Bell…" Kari mumbled, just before it started to chime.
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!" The Doctor called, grabbing Kari's hand and running down the stairs, and back out into the garden with her. "I've got to get back in there. The engines are phasing. It's going to burn!" He cried in a bit of a panic.
Amelia just looked at him as if he was crazy, which most people who met him did. "But it's just a box. How can a box have engines?" She asked him.
"It's not a box. It's a time machine." The Doctor told her, a smile on his face.
"What, a real one? You've got a real time machine?" The little girl asked, her eyes starting to get a little wider as she finally started to believe him.
"Not for much longer if we can't get her stabilised. Five minute hop into the future should do it." He told her, tying the rope around the box and the doors so that he could close them after jumping back in.
"Can I come?"
Kari looked down at her, if she could, she would take her with them, because she knew what was going to happen. But that also made her know that they had to leave her behind. "It's not safe in there, not yet. Five minutes, and we'll be right back. Okay?" She said to her, while the Doctor finished off with the rope.
"People always say that."
The Doctor turned and looked at the little girl in her nightdress, cardigan and wellies. "Am I people? Do we even look like people? Trust me. I'm the Doctor. And this is my beautiful, brilliant Kari." He told her softly. Little Amelia managed to smile, as the Doctor picked Kari up by the waist and sat her on the edge of the TARDIS.
"Great, I get dry just to go for yet another swim." She mumbled, as the Doctor pulled himself up next to her.
"But you still look beautiful." The Doctor told her, before giving her a quick kiss on the cheek.
She smiled back at him. "Not looking to bad yourself there, Doctor." Kari replied, grabbing hold of his hand tightly. They both nodded, and jumped off the edge, falling straight back down to the swimming pool, in the library.
"Geronimo!" They both shouted, making the Doctor laugh, just before they hit the pool with a splash.
