I couldn't tell you why I forgot, or how I forgot, but I somehow managed to forget toiletries.
'Shit, fuck, dammit, shit shit shit!' I thought as I finished digging through my bag and realized that I still couldn't find the feminine products I needed. I knew my calendar, and the day before we leave Italy is when I'll desperately need the products for sure, but with the traveling and the stress… I'm scared I'll start early.
I started throwing on my jacket as Edward stepped out of the bathroom, toweling his hair dry and watching me with a look of amusement.
"I'm going shopping! I'll be back in a little while!" I shouted as I swung my purse over my shoulder.
I could FEEL him trying to read my thoughts, but I started singing an old nursery rhyme I forgot the name of in my head, kindly asking him to fuck off. I could see him tense out of the corner of my eye as I made my way to the door to our hotel room.
"Send me a text when you reach the store and on your way back!" I heard him shout as I closed the door behind me.
I dug around in my purse as I walked out of the hotel itself, turning down the road towards the nearest convenience store, looking forward confidently once I realized I had all the things I needed to purchase the things I needed.
"Okay… Let's see." I checked the time, 11:49 am. "I've got about 30 minutes before I should eat lunch."
I was only 5 feet away from the store when I suddenly lost all sense of touch, sight, smell, and hearing. I was about to panic when I suddenly felt very tired. I think someone is near me but… I'm not sure… I… can't…
I don't even remember my eyes closing, or passing out but the second I opened my eyes I didn't recognize my surroundings. I was laying on a plush bed with a pillow so soft the entire object bowed to the weight of my head, surrounding most of my peripheral in red silk. What I saw in my immediate above was also a rich, red bed canopy with gold Renaissance era patterns. Wherever I am, it's definitely not the hotel and it's way above whatever I could afford in a lifetime.
I sat up quickly, groaning slightly when my head swam. I gripped my forehead and observed my surroundings closely while trying to keep the world from spinning. "This is not my hotel room..." I grumbled, not quite awake enough to really panic.
I turned a bit and noticed my purse on a chair in the corner with the strap neatly rolled up and tucked into the purse itself. "At least it wasn't stolen…" I mumbled to myself.
It was only about 30 seconds later that the door to the room I was in swung open silently and in strodes a tall, familiar, dark haired man.
"Finally awake I see." He smiled at me from the foot of the bed, his hands held behind his back.
I stared at him without expression, honestly not even amused. I should have expected this. "Yeah." I raised a brow at him.
My lack of proper response seemed to surprise him, almost as though he were expecting me to be a blubbering, panicking mess. But alas, unfortunately for him, I am still waking up, so I channeled my inner Pooh Bear and had no bothers to give… I don't know why there was a weird accent with that. I wonder how Edward would handle hearing that internal voi- oh yeah, Aro.
My mind grinded to a near screeching halt as I snapped my gaze back to the vampire in front of me. "Oh." I mumbled, suddenly feeling wide awake.
Aro just continued to smile at me, never blinking, never taking his eyes off me. It was unsettling to say the least.
"Why am I here exactly? Umm… Sir?" I mumbled, trying desperately to avoid eye contact with his unnaturally red eyes.
"I'm curious, how much do you know exactly, and how were you able to perfectly mimic my laugh before ever meeting me." It wasn't a question, he was almost demanding me to tell him.
I bit my bottom lip, depending on what I say, also depends on whether I leave here alive, if at all.
"Well…" I start, throwing the blankets off my legs so I can stand. Aro makes no move to rush my words or question the sudden desire to stand on my two feet. "I know enough to where… it would be unwise to leave out details."
"So you do know me, do go on," Aro said with his smile looking just the tiniest bit tighter than before.
"And I'm not… very good with details, I tend to leave things out… so um…" I shoot out my hand. "I'm Jessica."
Aro's eyes left my face for the first time, slowly traveling down my arm and to my offered hand. My heart pounding in my ears like a drum preparing a march for war. He looked back at my face, and as his hand slowly extended for mine his smile seemed to reach his eyes.
"You are a smart child then."
I almost flinched from how cold his hand was. It was different from Edward's. I don't know how. I watched as his eyes had this almost glazed over look to them as he viewed my memories.
It had to have been only about 30 or so seconds later that he finally released my hand from his and I shoved it under my shirt to warm up faster. Geez, how is he colder than Edward?!
He stared at me for quite some time before smiling. "Well, I think we can keep you alive for now." He said, which is weird…
"Is that code for, "I'll kill you later."?" I asked, albeit a bit stupidly.
His expression became more amused the longer I stood there. "No." He finally said. "Depending on what…" He paused, as though he were unsure on what to say. "Edward decides depends on your survival." He smiled. "And what he knows."
I gulped a bit, sitting back down on the bed. 'I swear to god Edward, if you do something to get me killed, I WILL haunt your ass for the rest of eternity.' I hissed mentally, as though he could hear me.
I called Edward as soon as Aro left -weirdly letting me keep my phone-, he picked up almost immediately. "Jess… Are… You…."
The Volturi's castle was blocking the signal, I should consider it a miracle that the call even reached Edward. I took a deep breath to keep myself from crying at the sound of his voice, I just… I don't know what the outcome will be. My life is quite literally in the hands of a hundred-year 17 year-old.
"I'm sorry Edward, I can't talk now. I got kidnapped, I'll explain later…. I love you…" I felt my face darken as I hung up the phone, carefully putting it in my pants pocket for safe keeping… I hope he got the jist of it...
It was only about 2 hours later, I had been given food, some fancy pasta with white sauce. I was sitting at a desk, a textbook in a familiar but completely illegible language. How does he expect me to get any work done if all of it is in LATIN?! I can't read that, I can barely read a bit of french and a tiny bit of Italian but that is it! Hell, I only know this is Latin because one of the random pages had words I remember reading in random books!
I could feel the sweat dripping from my forehead as Marcus' disinterested gaze burned into the back of my head.
"Is this subject not one you are learning?" His monotone voice called to me from the chair by the fireplace.
"I can't read the language." I muttered, snapping the book closed, a few older ones on the table before me. "I can only read english…" I don't know why, but I feel so at ease around him. I mean, he's a vampire, but he seems so disinterested in everything around him. He keeps staring at things probably invisible to the naked eye.
'Relationship lines.' my mind helpfully supplied. Right, he can see people's relationships in the form of thread-like things. I wonder if he can see mine…
I shook my head quickly, smacking my cheeks rather hard. I winced at the sudden sting. Wow. Okay. Time to try and ask for help. I turned towards him and unfortunately for my still beating heart he was standing right behind me.
"Some tutoring will have to do for now." He murmured in his quiet, almost bored sounding voice.
The next 4 hours were spent with him reading the textbook to me in english and helping me solve the problems. It was definitely more advanced than what I am learning but at least it's passing the time. Marcus made sure that after he explained something once, he would make me repeat it until I got it. I don't know why but… he somehow made that method work and his bored demeanor seemed to absorb any stress and anxiety I might have had.
By the time I realized how long it had been, it had already been about 8 hours since I disappeared from Edward. I was kidnapped at around 11 am and it was currently 7 pm.
I sat back in my chair with a groan, a frown plastered on my face as Marcus left to get me dinner I guess. I don't know why he doesn't just call someone else to do it.
After eating I spent the next 5 hours doing more studying with Marcus who was ever patient with me. He left at some point and a girl stood in his place, her expression was blank as she stared at me.
"The master calls for your presence." She finally said after 20 minutes of us just staring at each other.
I sighed tiredly and grabbed my purse, clutching it close to my chest. I had a feeling I will be leaving soon. I followed the girl down the long, winding, maze-like hallways. There was no conversing which just made me nervous as we neared the throne room.
Stepping through a side door and seeing Edward standing there literally made my heart jump and I lost control of my limbs as I ran towards him. My arms wrapping tightly around his middle, his own arm wrapping tightly around my waist.
I was barely paying attention to our surroundings when I heard Aro speak. "As long as you stick to that plan of yours we will not bother you. I expect results when the time comes."
I jolted in surprise. 'Plan, what plan?' I looked up at my boyfriend in confusion. "What plan is he talking about Edward?"
He ignored my question in favor of answering Aro with a nod. With that, Edward briskly walked out of the room, keeping a firm grip on me.
"They didn't touch you did they?" Edward had a slightly angered expression on his face as he whispered this to me.
I sighed, accepting the fact that we weren't going to talk about this just yet. "No, they didn't." I took the time to admire the craftsmanship of the carvings in the walls of the hallway as we walked, his tight grip on my arm keeping me grounded to reality. "They did try to help me study though, which was… weird." I looked back up at him. "The textbooks looked advanced and were entirely in Latin. Marcus he… is actually a good teacher." I couldn't stop the deep sigh as I remembered him getting exasperated with my complaining.
"You're lucky he didn't kill you with how you were talking to him." Edward commented as I remembered the conversation I had with Aro.
"Trust me, I know…" I muttered. "I realized my stupidity almost directly after speaking and always felt he was 2 seconds away from snapping."
We reached the elevator and I couldn't stop the internal sigh of relief as we stepped into it.
We arrived at our hotel room in what felt like mere seconds when in reality it took about a half hour of walking. Edward wanted to have us return faster, but I felt like if he picked me up and ran I would end up vomiting the food that I had at the Volturi.
I slumped into one of the chairs to take off my shoes when Edward began hovering, sniffing around me and attempting to, what I'm assuming, assess any possible injuries. He got to my eye level. "Are you sure you're okay, Jessica?"
"Edward, I'm fine." I sighed out. I understand I disappeared for hours and was in the hands of your sworn enemy but seriously, I'm fine! I couldn't help but get annoyed when I took my jacket off and got a whiff of old vintage perfume, causing me to gag. "I need a shower..."
I ran to the bathroom and quickly stripped before hopping into the hot water. The steam helped clear my head, and just as I was about to grab Edward's shampoo because of course he remembers to pack that stuff, something came to mind.
I.. didn't return to the hotel with my purse.
"FUCK!" I punched the wall, wincing as pain traveled up my arm and I quickly pressed my knuckles to my lips, trying to kiss the pain away. I can't believe I forgot my purse! I must have dropped it in the throne room… ugh! I can't believe how stupid I am, mom and dad are going to kill me when they find out! My photos of Max, our parents, and my friends were in my wallet too. Well… too late to go get it now, I'm just thankful Edward made me leave my passport and ID in my travelbag.
With reluctance and because the water was no longer steaming, I stepped out of the bathroom, dressed in comfy pajamas and towel drying my hair.
I stepped into the sitting area of the hotel room and was caught a little off guard by the smell of delicious pastries, which were sitting on the table and a brand new crossbody purse big enough to hold quite a few items in a light tan color.
I reached for the bag first. It felt durable, like leather and a brand I didn't recognize. It was also noticeably heavy so I, of course, opened it up to find out why. It was full of the times I wanted to buy: pads, tampons, some deodorant, and shampoo. Somehow he even got scents I enjoy most and… wow he got the right sizes in everything. "Oh Ed…" I looked over at the copper haired male who was smiling a bit and shrugging, avoiding eye contact as he shoved his hands in his pockets.
I looked at the dessert platter, it had Tiramisu and Cannoli and a few other cream puffs along with what looked like strawberry gelato based on the colors. "Thanks." I smiled at him before grabbing a Cannoli and taking a bite and closing my eyes happily as I hummed at the sweetness.
"It won't replace the pictures though," Edward commented, resting his elbows on the table and watching me eat with a natural smile.
I flicked my pointer through a dollop of whip cream off one of the pastries and plopped the stuff on Edward's nose, making him go cutely cross-eyed. "I can ask Angela to make me new copies, those were getting wrinkled anyway."
He chuckled, taking a napkin to wipe off the cream. "I suppose you're right."
I chewed on my bottom lip, something that immediately reminded me of Bella but I threw that thought out the window. I scanned his face and slowly walked over to him. Edward's eyes widened and quickly sat down in a chair, allowing me to wrap my arms around his neck. "Is… this okay?"
"Isn't that supposed to be my line?" Edward responded, leaning forward so our noses touch.
"The one who makes the first move asks." I paid little mind to the cold hand threading through my hair, and I tilt my head so the crown rests perfectly into the gentle palm.
"Then yes, it is okay."
Our eyes closed and our lips met for the first time.
