A/N: Hello everyone, and Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate it. I got a little carried away, writing for 'The Year That Never Was'. So you're going to have to wait a little longer until 'The Last of the Time Lords' now. Sorry!

Kari stood there at the window, her hand clutching the Doctor's wrinkled hand tightly, watching the silver balls whizz through the angry red scar in the sky and down to the land below. Martha was down there, she was somewhere on the planet below, trying to avoid death. A tear slipped down Kari's cheek as she thought about just how many people were going to die, and how much people would struggle over the next twelve months.

She knew what Martha was going to go through, how she would only just manage to escape the burning of Japan. She was going to walk the Earth, alone. The Master would have people chasing her, trying to catch her and stop her. Kari could only hope that she would stay safe through it all, that her friend would survive throughout the year.

All she wanted to do was put a stop to it all, to talk to the Master and get him to understand that he didn't have to do any of the things he was. Kari wanted him to know that she understood what the drumming sound was, to reassure him that it wasn't his fault. She wanted so desperately to make things right, to stop the suffering that was going to happen, to do something. She wasn't going to be scared any more, she wasn't going to be weak, and Kari thought that was the best way to prove it. She wished she could save the world single-handed.

She didn't want Martha out there, walking the Earth alone, telling the tale of the Doctor to anyone and everyone. Martha had been put through so much already, her family had been captured, used against her, Kari just didn't want her to go through any more of it alone. But until she got the chance, until she was alone, she knew she couldn't do anything.

"Now then, what to do with you?" The Master said suddenly, grasping Kari's attention. Holding onto the Doctor's hand, she had forgotten the man was still gripping her arm. Knowing that the Doctor was there, feeling the warmth from his hand, she felt calmer, safer.

The grip on her hand tightened. "Leave her alone." The Doctor's voice was raspy, but the fire was still burning in his eyes, especially when it came to Kari. And there was nothing that could extinguish it.

The Master simply looked at him, a grin on his face. "Why? What are you going to do if I don't?" There was malice in his voice, and it was clear that he didn't really care what the Doctor said, or about any threats that he could make.

"I told you centuries ago what I would do to you if you ever even thought of hurting her. That still stands." Kari was just looking at him in shock. She had never heard the Doctor use that tone before, and it even scared her slightly. She just hoped that it would ward the Master off as well, because she really didn't know what was going on.

But all he did was scoff. "Oh please. Do you really think you are in any position to threaten me? Look at you, Doctor. So weak." The Master said, before yanking Kari away from him, their hands finally being torn apart. "You always got what you wanted, all the time. The whole time we were growing up, it was you who got the spotlight, who got the recognition. It was you who everybody wanted to know."

Kari had absolutely no idea about anything that the Master was saying. Yes, she knew that the Doctor and Master used to be friends, but she had no idea what happened from there. He had made it clear that he knew her, telling her that they all used to have adventures together. But it didn't make her feel any less scared of him, because she hadn't been there yet.

"But not anymore." The Master told him, a hint of glee in his voice. "You see, now it's my time, Doctor. You poisoned everyone against me, everyone." His other hand reached out and gently stroked Kari's cheek. She shuddered under his touch, her fear growing by the second.

Kari saw the fire burning even more in the Doctor's eyes now. "Don't touch her." He ground out, watching her flinch. He had always hated to see her scared, and he could feel her fear, it was just radiating off her. Her entire posture just told him how afraid she was of the man who had a hold of her.

The Master just rolled his eyes. "How stupid are you? I'm not going to hurt her. The freak, on the other hand…" He nodded his head, and the men that were holding onto Jack started dragging him out of the room. "Oh, I am going to enjoy this. Come now, my sweet little Angel, time for us to rule this planet together." The Master took a tighter hold of Kari's hand, and dragged her out of the room and away from the Doctor.

She struggled, she fought against him and tried desperately to pull herself away from him. When she gave the Doctor a final glance, he could see the fear and worry bubbling in his eyes. Kari wished that there were something she could do, something to assure him that everything was going to be fine, but she couldn't. She had no idea what was going to happen to her, or how much things were going to now change because of her. She didn't really know if she wanted to know either.

She tried to pull away from the man again once they were out in the corridor, but it was no use at all, his hand was like a vice and she could tell that there was no way he was going to let her go. "Please, you don't have to do this." Kari's voice came out in almost a whisper.

He stopped and turned to face her. "Why? Why don't I have to do this? Give me one good reason why." The Master growled at her.

"Because I don't want you to." She told him, trying to think of a really good reason that the man before her would actually accept. "Because billions of people will die. I know what that sound is, the sound in your head. The constant drumming. You are not crazy, and it is not your fault." Kari knew she was clutching at straws, doing anything to find that little bit of hope that was left.

"Then what is it?"

She shook her head at him. "I can't… I can't tell you. But you will find out, I promise, you will find out one day. But please, you are not crazy, the drumming that drives you mad is not your fault. You can stop this, you can change everything." She was pleading with him, praying that she could change the man before her.

"Why should I? The one thing that I have desired most in the universe for centuries is finally mine. Why would I want to give that up? To give you up?"

"Because this is wrong, and you know it is. Please…" Kari didn't really know what else to say. She could try to convince him, to beg and plead with him to get him to stop and forget his plan to rule. But in the end, she knew that the Doctor would still beat him whether she succeeded or not.

The Master just looked at her, watching as the tears began to build in her eyes. "Oh, my precious Kari, there is nothing you can say that will stop me. I have dreamed of this day, nothing can stop us now."

She shifted uncomfortable at the words he had used. "Not us, just you." Kari managed to mumble, but he still heard her.

He placed a hand on her chin, and lightly brushed her cheek with the pad of his thumb. "Minor detail. With you by my side, anything is possible." After that, they began walking again. Kari didn't know what else to say to him, he seemed to have an answer for everything. They only stopped when they reached a rather quiet part of the airship.

There didn't seem to be any guards, which was a surprise to Kari. "What are you going to do with me?" She had absolutely no clue as to how he was going to treat her, and it just added to fuel her fear of the man.

"What do you think I'm going to do with you?" The Master asked her, raising an eyebrow at her as he placed his hand on the handle to the door they were standing outside of.

"I… I don't know." She stuttered. "I can't predict your actions, I don't know."

A smile stretched across his face. "Well then, you won't have seen this coming." He said, before yanking the door open and dragging her into the room. It shocked her to the point where she actually let out a small scream. "Welcome to your new home." The Master then told her, finally letting go of her and locking the door. "Do you like it? I had it made especially for you."

Kari's eyes wandered around the room. The walls were painted blue, not quite TARDIS blue, but it was clear that was what they had been aiming for. The bed had blue covers on it as well, and a desk, which looked remarkably like the one in her room on the TARDIS, was up against one of the walls. "It's just a room." She whispered, not really knowing what else to say. "That's all it is, a room."

"No, this is your room, my Angel." The Master told her, his hands in the pockets of his suit trousers. "Oh, and one more thing, before I forget." He grabbed a hold of her wrists, before snapping a metal bracelet on each of them.

Kari felt an unbearable pain soar through her body, and she let out a cry as she fell to her knees. Tears began to sting her eyes, purely from the pain that was coursing through her body. She had no idea what it was, but it felt like something had been taken away from her, as if a part of her had been locked away. She was in pure agony and she had no idea why.

The Master had still been holding onto her wrists as she went down, and he soon released her hands and carefully pulled her up. "There we go, I know it hurts, but I'm not letting you get away from me again." He told her, trying to help her to stand. "Come on, up you get."

Kari was just in so much pain, and she choked out a sob. "What have you done to me?" She was absolutely petrified of what had just happened, and as the seconds passed by she felt even worse.

"For centuries I've been trying to find a way to tame the time vortex that flows within you. To stop you from being pulled from one place to another." He explained, slowly making his way over to the bed, still holding her up. "I remember, back on Gallifrey, how you would always say how you wished you didn't have to go, how you wished you could stop the jumping. I never stopped working on trying to find a way."

By now, Kari's head was spinning madly. "But it hurts." She was feeling so sick now as well, and she was pretty sure that those chips that the Doctor had forced her to eat in the warehouse were about to make an unwanted appearance. "Please… take them off. Please…"

The Master watched her, the worry actually showing on his face. He could see that she was in pain, she could hardly even stand and he could feel her body shaking. "I can't. This is the only way to ensure that you stay with me. I'm not letting you go, Kari, not after how long and how hard I've worked for this." His voice was much softer as he spoke, and Kari actually had to look at him to make sure that it was the same man speaking.

"I can't… it hurts…" She managed to mutter, before her body finally gave up and went completely limp. The pain had just become too much for her, her body and mind couldn't take it and had instead shut down.

He had caught her, stopped her from hitting her head on the desk and hurting herself even more. It hadn't exactly gone how he had planned. The Master hadn't anticipated the amount of pain that she was going to be in, how bad her reaction to the metal bracelets that were blocking the time vortex from flowing through her was going to be. "Rest now, my precious Angel." The man whispered to her, gently placing her down on the bed and kissing the top of her head. He knew that he just had to wait, wait for her body to adjust to the pain and for it to turn into just a dull numbness.

He left the room quietly, making sure to lock the door behind him. Now that he was confident that his Angel wouldn't be leaving any time soon, he was going to go back and deal with the Doctor, the man who he had resented for so long, who he blamed for so many of the misfortunes in his life.

When he arrived back at the flight deck, the Doctor was sitting in a chair at the table, the expression on his face unreadable. But the moment he laid eyes on the Master, the anger a fury took over. "What have you done to Kari?" He spat at him, struggling to push himself up. He wanted nothing more than to grab the man by the throat and throttle him.

An amused look took over the Masters face at the sight of the old man. "Oh, just letting her get settled in her new home. I might let you have a visit from her later." The Master told him, sounding rather smug. He was certainly pleased with himself, because after so long he had Kari and the Doctor was completely helpless.

"What have you done to her?" The Doctor growled at him, trying once more to get up. "I know you've done something to her, I can feel it. You've hurt her."

The Master's smug grin slowly turned into a frown. He knew that there was a strong bond between the Doctor and Kari, there always had been. But this was a little bit of a surprise to him. Those bracelets were meant to stop him from knowing, to cut her off from not just the time vortex, but the Doctor as well. "She's sleeping. This whole day has been very traumatic for her. My poor Angel was utterly exhausted."

"She is not your Angel." The fire in the Doctor's eyes was burning even more fiercely now, and the Master knew that it was only just going to keep on growing. And he was looking forward to it. "Now what have you done?"

The other Time Lord sat down at the table opposite his old friend. "Tell me, Doctor, do you remember how much time we all used to spend in the fields of my father's estate? All three of us, the best of friends." He was remembering his past, the days before the Doctor ruined it all. "Oh, the adventures we used to have. Do you remember any of that, Doctor?"

"Of course I do. Kari would always stop us from fighting. But most of the fighting was because of her, wasn't it?" The Master's eyes darkened at that comment, because it was true. "You tried so desperately to impress her, but she just wasn't interested. All she wanted to do was be your friend, but you always tried to push it further."

"It was because of you that she wasn't interested. You always had to do something better, to go one step further. You were trying to impress her just as much." The Master ended up growling at him, his hands flat on the table as he tried to contain his temper. "You can't deny it, Doctor."

The old man just looked over at him. "No, I can't deny it, and I won't."

With a sigh, the Master leaned back in his chair, taking a few deep breaths to help him keep his cool. "Do you remember the first day we met her? Back when we had just entered the Academy?"

"Yes."

"Oh, she was the most beautiful creature either of us had ever laid eyes on. The Golden Angel, we called her. The woman who just appeared out of nowhere, a golden storm surrounding her. The way she smiled at us both, the way her eyes would just light up. We thought an angel had fallen from the sky." In his mind, he could see it, the way Kari looked, the confusion on her face as she looked at where she was. He remembered how her eyes softened the moment they told her their names from the Academy. "She truly is an angel."

The Doctor had been watching him as he spoke, paying close attention to the way he moved, the way he spoke. He honestly didn't like it, he really didn't like the way the Master was talking about Kari. "But she's not your Angel."

A smile worked its way onto the Master's face. "Not yet, Doctor."

"She will never be your Angel. Kari is so much stronger than you could ever imagine. She has seen so much, been through so much pain and heartbreak. You will never break her down." The Doctor warned him, understanding what he was saying.

"Are you sure about that, Doctor? Because I don't think that you are." The Master replied, before leaning forward. "Now tell me, have you asked her to marry you yet? Because when we first met her, she told us both about the man she was waiting for. The man she loved with both her hearts and would do anything for. When we asked her who he was, all she said was spoilers."

The Doctor could feel both of his hearts pounding in his chest. "Yes, I asked her, and she said yes."

The smile grew bigger on the Master's face now. "But you haven't married her yet, have you? You've only just asked her. I know, Doctor. I had eyes and ears everywhere. She introduced you as her fiancée, not husband. You haven't married her yet, have you?" There was so much smugness in his tone, it was making the Doctor feel sick.

"She will never marry you, and you know it." The Doctor spat at him. "It doesn't matter what you do, Kari will never agree to it." His hearts were pounding even more now, knowing that the Master was planning on truly making Kari his.

"Oh, trust me, Doctor, she will."

"And what about Lucy? You're wife. Have you forgotten about her?" He knew he had to find some way to stop this train of thought, to get it out of his old friend's head.

The Master shrugged at him. "A human companion, nothing more. She's had her uses, but Kari has always been the only one I have ever wanted. Kari is a Time Lady, the last Time Lady."

"I won't let you do this. I know you've hurt her, I can feel it. Hell will freeze over before I let you do anything else to her." There was so much fire in the Doctor's voice, and the Master had expected nothing less.

But the Master wasn't scared of his threats. "You are so sure of yourself, Doctor. But there is nothing that you can do to stop me. Nothing." He pushed his chair back and away from the table, standing at his full height and walking around the table and standing beside where the Doctor was sitting. "She is mine." The Master whispered to him, a smirk on his face as he left the room. He was rather pleased with himself, because everything had gone to plan.

The Doctor was left sitting there, his mind running through everything that had just happened. He knew something had happened to Kari, he could just feel it. For so long he had been able to feel her in his mind, to know that she was there and that she was okay, but now he couldn't. her presence had just vanished in the blink of an eye, and it done more than just made him feel uneasy.

Now he was regretting not listening to her, to her pleads for them to get in the TARDIS and go, to leave and never look back. He was only now starting to realise how much of a burden she was carrying, with how much she knew and couldn't tell him. The Doctor was blaming himself, because he could and should have listened to her. She always placed so much faith and trust in him, and he just ignored her warnings and walked right into the lions lair.

She would always follow him, wherever he would go, no matter what the danger. His Kari would smile at him, take hold of his hand, and they would run across the stars together. He should have realised how serious it was when she refused to run with him, to take his hand and face any danger head on. He had let her down, it wasn't the other way around.

"I'm so sorry, Kari." He whispered to himself, knowing that at that moment in time, there was nothing that he could do. The Master had been right, he was too weak to do anything to help her. He couldn't stop the Master from doing what he wanted with Kari, he couldn't protect her like he had always promised. And it was slowly killing him inside to know that.

While the Doctor was filling himself with regret, the Master was finally on his way to pay Jack a visit. He wanted to make sure they all knew where they stood, make them understand that he had won. He still had that smirk on his face, he was feeling on top of the world and knew there was nothing that could make it come crashing down on him.

He reached the boiler room, and found the 'freak' standing and chained, two armed men guarding him. "Hello, freak." The Master called, strolling into the room.

"The Doctor will stop you, you know that, right?" Jack said, not liking the amount of confidence that the man had. "No matter how long it takes, he will stop you."

The Master rolled his eyes at him. "No he won't. The Doctor is helpless, and so are you."

"The longer you keep Kari away from him, the stronger he is going to get. The Doctor would do anything for her, no matter what." The Master knew that Jack's words were true. The Doctor would fight with everything he had to make sure that she was safe. "You can't beat him."

"I already have. The Doctor is helpless, and Kari is finally mine. You have no idea how long I have waited for this day, for the day when she will finally be freed from the Doctor." Jack looked at him with worry, clearly not liking what he was saying. "He poisoned her against me, fed her lies. But not anymore. She will be treated like a Queen, and we will rule this planet together."

"You think she'll agree to that?" Jack asked him, raising an eyebrow at the man. "Kari would never do that. You'd have to drag her kicking and screaming. She will fight you all the way, no doubt about it."

The Master was finding it rather amusing how they were telling him how Kari would fight him, how she would never stand at his side. They didn't realise that he was doing all of this for her. "You don't know her as well as you think. I've known her since I was a child. She saved me so many times, now it's my turn to save her." The Time Lord said, before aiming his laser screwdriver at him and firing a beam at him, momentarily killing him.

He stood there and waited, waited for him to take that breath that signalled that he was alive again. He didn't have to wait long. "You can kill me as many times as you want, it won't change a thing." Jack spat at the man. "I've known my Princess for a long time, we've been through a few tough spots together. She's saved me, and I've saved her. I know that she will never be the person you want her to be."

Before Jack knew it, a hand was wrapped tightly around his throat. "She is not your princess." The Master growled at him, the rage burning in his eyes.

Jack couldn't help but smirk, knowing that he had hit a nerve. "Kari will always be my Princess. No matter what you do, the Doctor's Kari will be my Princess."

The Master's grip tightened the moment he called Kari the Doctor's. "She isn't the Doctor's. She is mine." He told him, before killing him once more.

He didn't like the way that both the Doctor and Jack Harkness were determined that Kari would never be his. They didn't seem to understand that he had won, that they had no hope of beating him and changing things. He had the upper hand, he had won the game.

It didn't take long for him to return to the room where he had left his Angel, and he was pleased to see that she was still sleeping on the bed. He sat down on the edge next to where she was lying, gently brushing that wild golden hair of hers away from her face. "A beauty that can compare to nothing." He whispered to her, planting a kiss on her forehead. "My precious Angel, the only living creature in the whole of creation who understands me. You belong at my side, to be treated as a queen, a goddess even." He told her, now playing with her hair.

Kari was still sound asleep. Her chest moving only when she breathed and nothing more. The Master's voice had not woken her, his actions had not disturbed her from her slumber. But the expression on her face gave him the impression that she was still in pain.

He had developed those bracelets himself, designed them with only Kari in his thoughts. "Once you have rested, once you have come to terms with this new world that we command, you will be worshiped, my love." The Master told her softly, just gazing at her as she slept. In all honesty, he was still struggling to come to terms with the fact that he finally had the one thing he desired most in the universe.

It was something he had dreamed of a planned for so long, that the reality of it was not yet sinking in. But seeing her there, seeing his Angel lying there, peacefully sleeping while he watched her, he was starting to believe it. She was there, away from the Doctor, completely cut off from him.

As he was looking at her, he noticed something out of the corner of his eyes. He slowly turned his head, his attention drawn to the bag she had slung over her. He hadn't noticed it before, and he knew it was because of the perception filter that surrounded it. He simply reached over her, smile as he got closer to her, and rummaged through it.

"So, what did you bring with you then?" He asked himself, starting to pull things out from the bag. The first thing he came across was her psychic paper, given to her so long ago now by her big brother Jack. His hand then wrapped around a slim, cold tube, and he pulled out her sonic screwdriver. A smile graced his lips as he looked at it, he just knew that she had made it herself. The last thing that his hand found in the bag was a small box.

His smile turned into a frown as he pulled it out, before his eyes widened when he saw it. He felt like time had frozen, as he stayed there looking and the small red velvet box that had been in her bag. He knew that box, he could recognise it in an instant. The Master knew exactly what the box was, and what was inside of it, and he was rather surprised to find that she had it with her.

He slowly opened the lid to it, swallowing the lump that was in his throat as he did. He hadn't even noticed that his hands were shaking slightly. A gasp escaped when his eyes settled on the contents of the box. "You kept it." The Master whispered. "After all this time, you still have it."

Inside of the box lay a gold chain, a heart shaped locket resting on the silk pillow inside. He carefully opened it, not wanting to damage it. He was surprised to see the picture that was inside of the locket as well. It was slightly faded, but he still knew who it was. The picture was of Kari with two young men, the Doctor and the Master, back when they were all still friends, before the Doctor took her away from him.

The Master looked down at her, a slight smile still on his face. "Even after all this time, you still carry it with you. You never forgot about me." He said rather proudly as he looked down at Kari still sleeping.

But there was something he was forgetting, something crucial. She had told him that she had never met him before, that his past was still in her future. All he could think about was the fact that she still had it, that it was in her bag with the only thing she would always carry with her. It just brought such a smile to his face that everything else was erased from his mind. The only thing that mattered to him now was the woman who lay beside him, perfectly beautiful and asleep. To him, nothing else matter, as long as she was there beside him, the Master didn't need anything else, because Kari always had, and always would be, everything to him.

A/N: Well, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. There was so much that I wanted to do, but there was no possible way I could do it all.

I want to say thank you to everyone who has favourited/followed Kari's story, I'm glad you are all enjoying it and I hope you will continue to enjoy reading it. Also, I want to give one great big massive thank you to every single one of you who has reviewed. The last chapter got a lot more reviews than I expected, so thank you all for that!

There has been a few requests for me to post more than just once a week. Although I would love to post more like I did when this story first came to life, that just isn't possible right now. Plus, I would much rather post a well written (hopefully) and thought out chapter than just rush to get something posted.

Well, once again, I hope you guys all enjoyed that chapter, and that I have left you cursing me because of what I have just done. So until next week!

Pippa.
