Brick sat in an empty waiting area, near the door of the saloon, waiting for Blossom to finish with her haircut. He didn't know why he was so nervous, he wasn't the one getting the sheers. He would have gladly accepted the punishment in her place though, if it would have meant stopping her from going through with her last dare. Even though he had robbed plenty of banks, and was a little too excited about Blossom stealing some snacks from the convenience store… The idea of her throwing away her innocence, basically denouncing her hero status.. It made him feel sick. Something in the pit of his stomach told him not to let her do it.
Luckily, Blossom had come to her senses and decided to take the loss instead. He really didn't know what he would've done if she didn't want to listen. Would he have stepped aside and let her make her own decision? Would he have physically restrained her? Called her family? He really couldn't say. Blossom was free to make her own choices, of course.. but something wasn't right about it, with her memory being gone. As much as he had grown to care for the girl she was today, the one he could see smiling nervously back at him from the mirror across the room, that wasn't all of her. There was another, completely different side of her, the Blossom that she had been for her entire life before now.. When she got her memory back, she would be different.. A thought which absolutely terrified him. But when she did regain her old self, he didn't want her to hate herself for doing something that she found unforgivable. He wanted her to be happy, and she wasn't completely in her right mind to be making decisions like that right now. He knew it wasn't his place to lecture her about doing the right thing.. he was a fucking Rowdyruff boy, he always made bad choices. But Blossom was better than that.
Blossom sat, nervously twiddling her fingers while the hairstylist sprayed her hair and gently ran a comb through it. Even though she wanted it, she was anxious, a part of her still clinging to her hair as if it were a lifeline. As far as she knew, she had never had more than a trim before. It was just hair, if she didn't like it, it would grow back. But to her it was more than that. It was the one thing left tying her to her old life, something her former self would never have cut. It almost felt like cutting her hair would also mean cutting ties with the old Blossom.. which was something that she had wanted for a while now. The more she learned about herself, the more she wanted to distance herself, to become someone who she actually liked. Of course, she hadn't said any of that to the boys, or even Brick. It was just a feeling she kept hidden within.
"Your hair is in remarkable condition, for this length."
She met the woman's eyes in the mirror and gave a polite smile. "Oh, thank you."
"How much did you want to cut off today?" She asked.
"Twelve inches." Blossom responded matter of factly. "You know, to donate."
The woman smiled. "Great, then let's get started, shall we?"
The first snip, admittedly, sent a chill down her spine. By the last one, she was a nervous wreck, wondering if she had made a mistake to cut so much. She couldn't see the change yet, but the sound was so unnerving. Her eyes kept flickering back to Brick, who gave her a reassuring smile every time. He was amazing, and she was really glad that he had come with her, even though it wasn't exactly up his alley.
"Okay, you can take a look at it and let me know if you want to go shorter."
Blossom's heart was racing, as the lady styled her hair, back to the way she'd worn it when she first came in. When she opened her eyes and stared back at her reflection, she was unsure. She didn't dislike it, but she didn't know if she liked it more than her old length either. She stood up to get a closer look, and smiled, thinking maybe it was a little better. She definitely felt lighter. Maybe a little bit different even. Then Brick was behind her, she turned around to face him, unknowingly biting her lip, while he ran his hand through her damp hair.
"Beautiful." He said it like they were the only two people in the whole building, even though the hairdresser was right beside them. She grinned and looked away, while a deep pink blush spread across Blossom's cheeks.
He had never said anything like that to her before, even though she had seen it in his eyes dozens of times. Her heart skipped a beat and she was looking into his eyes, and then at his lips.. She was just leaning into him when-
"So, any changes you want made?"
She reluctantly tore her eyes from his perfect features. "No. I like it." She replied happily, messing with the fresh cut ends. Her hair still fell to the middle of her back, plenty long. Besides, it was going to be so much easier to maintain. And most importantly, it was going to a much better place, to someone who needed it a lot more than her. That made her heart feel full, and she knew she had made the right decision.
"How about you, sir?" The woman held up a pair of scissors and chopped through the air menacingly. "Your hair would look great if you took off a few inches." Brick sent her a death glare, out of habit, and was just about to give her a real piece of his mind.
"His hair is already perfect." Blossom smiled.
For the rest of the day, Brick couldn't keep his eyes off of her. He had always loved her hair, and arguably even more now.. but that had nothing to do with it. She was just… glowing.
What was it about Blossom Utonium that seemed to melt through his once hard exterior?
