A/N: And here it is, the first Clara episode, the one that you all voted for (I know, the poll was some time ago now). I apologise now if I have missed and spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
Kari and the Doctor were sitting in the kitchen of their magical blue box that travelled through all of time and space. Each of them had a mug in their hands, and Kari's black shoes were sitting by the door, having been kicked off when they walked into the room.
"What did I want then?" The Doctor asked her, taking a large gulp of his tea. He was interested to know why he had been there, because he knew that it was in his future, obviously he was curious.
"Oh, the usual, you were just in the area and decided to pop by." She didn't really want to tell him that she had seen three different regenerations of him while he was sitting at the table waiting for her. Even though she was pretty sure he would understand, she didn't want him to be thinking about it too much. "Anyway, thank you, for tonight."
The Doctor just smiled at her. "As long as you enjoyed it, Kari, that's all that matters." He replied, still smiling.
She couldn't help but smile herself for some reason. "Yeah, I did. I felt a little uncomfortable at first, that place was really posh and those people didn't seem to like the fact that we were actually enjoying ourselves." It had taken her some time to get comfortable there, but when she realised that the Doctor didn't care if people gave them dirty looks, then she really shouldn't care either. If they didn't know how to have fun, then that was their own fault.
"All right, next time, you get the decide where we go. How does that sound?" All he wanted was to make her happy and see her smile, and if just having fish and chips would do that, then he didn't care.
"Deal, I pick the next date night." She still couldn't get over what she was saying, 'date night', but she did think it was kind of a nice thing for them to do. It actually made her wonder how many date nights that they had already had that she just didn't realised were dates. "Any idea where you're taking Rose next?" She decided to ask, taking a sip of her own tea.
He shrugged at her. "I haven't got the faintest. Just going to have to wait and see what happens when she wakes up." The Doctor told her, watching as she leaned back even further in the chair. She looked utterly exhausted, and he couldn't really blame her. "You all right there, or do you want to go to bed?"
Kari shifted around in her chair, picking herself up a bit. "Nah, I'm good. Totally stuffed from all the food, don't think I could eat anything for at least a week." She commented, letting out a rather content sigh. "I just want to sit back and take it easy."
But the Doctor wasn't gong to settle for that, oh no, he knew that she was getting tired, he could see it on her face and in her eyes. "Well, how about we go and relax in the library? You can just laze about and I can get some reading done." This was his little trick, because he knew what would happen once she was in the library.
"Go on, then. Beats sitting here and doing nothing until Rose wakes up, doesn't it?" Kari told him, before downing the rest of the tea that was in her mug. She picked up the Doctor's empty mug and put them both in the sink, telling herself that she would wash them properly later.
They took a nice little stroll through the TARDIS and towards the library, Kari having put her heels back on for the walk, only they never made it that far. "Uh, Doctor, I think we have a slight problem." Kari muttered, scrunching her eyes shut tightly as her head started pounding. "I think… I'm about to head off…" It was starting to get worse, and the glow had already started around her hands.
"Oh… I'll see you soon, Kari." The Doctor told her, leaning down and pressing a tender kiss against her lips. "Behave yourself, and keep me out of trouble."
Kari opened her eyes and looked up at him. "I'll do my best, Doctor." She managed to say to him, before the pain became too much for her and she had to scrunch her eyes shut again. Her whole world started spinning, and she had a slight feeling of nausea wash over her as well.
"You said…"
"I know what I said. I was the one who said it." Kari listened closely to the two voices, knowing exactly who they were. She couldn't help but smile a little, she had a first about to happen.
"You said it was looking at you funny." The Doctor called, walking behind Clara as she circled the console.
Kari opened her eyes, only to find that she was sitting at the top of a set of stairs, over looking the whole of the console room, watching as the two kept going around the console. "I was tired, overwrought. I didn't mean it. It's an appliance." Clara said, before patting the console nervously. Kari wanted to laugh, but she was having too much fun watching them.
"It's a pretty cool appliance." The Doctor, in his bow tie and waistcoat, defended. "We're not talking cheese grater here."
But Clara was not going to give in. "You're not getting me to talk to your ship. That's properly bonkers." She replied, now walking backwards so she could face the Doctor. He was quick to stop, stroke the console, and reassure the magical ship that Clara didn't mean it. "You're like one of those guys who can't go out with a girl unless his mother approves."
"It's important to me you get along. I could leave you two alone together." Kari was having so much trouble holding in the giggles now, but she was somehow managing.
But Clara stood there, the other side of the console now, her arms folded across her chest. "Now you're creeping me out."
"She has a connection to Kari, they're like… like… like really close sister." Now that Kari had heard her name, she was more interested in listening than controlling her laughter. "I know you get along with Kari, but it's important that you get along with her as well."
"I know Kari has a connection to your ship, but I am not going to talk to it." Clara said, resulting in a slightly annoyed him from all around them. Kari knew that her Sexy was getting upset, and she gently rested her hand on the steps and ran it back and forth, in a soothing motion.
The Doctor was getting frustrated now. "Take the wheel. Not the wheel. I'll make it easy. Shut it down to basic mode for you." He said, working away at all the bits and bobs in front of him.
"Basic?" Clara asked him, sounding rather insulted. "Because I'm a girl?"
Kari decided that it was time for her to let them know that she was there, and that she had witnessed their little wander around in circles. "No, because he doesn't usually like other people flying his beloved ship." She called, getting up from where she had been sitting and watching them. "He still doesn't approve of me flying her, I have to literally beg him to let me take over."
The Doctor rolled his eyes as he took big strides over to where Kari was now standing. "I always let you fly her when you ask. And I'm will to let you show Clara what to do." He said, stopping in front of her and looking down at her. She was a little taller than he was used to, because she still had her heeled shoes on. "Hello, by the way." He added, before gently placed his lips against Kari's and kissed her rather tenderly.
They only broke apart when they heard Clara clearing her throat from somewhere close to them. Kari was blushing furiously, like she always did, while the Doctor was grinning away. "Uh… hi." She said, trying to pull herself together. She didn't understand why her head always felt a little fuzzy whenever his kissed her, it always left her in a little bit of a daze. "Oh, and just for future reference, Sexy isn't like a sister to me, she's more like a mother. So you best be careful, you don't want to get slapped by yet another mother, do you?"
"So, have you been somewhere nice, then?" The Doctor asked here, taking a look at her and noticing she was wearing some small heels and a rather nice little black dress. He was deliberately ignoring her comment about Sexy and the mother slapping, he didn't need to be reminded how many times a mother had slapped him in recent years.
"Uh, yeah… it was date night. And it was gate crashed, more than once." Kari replied, giving him a rather firm look. If he had Clara there that meant he would have been there, and crashed her date twice, Clara would be there for the third time.
That was when Clara's head poked around from the other side of the console. "Date night? You two still have date nights?" She actually seemed a little surprised at that, but all Kari could do was shrug at her. She had been a little shocked herself when the Doctor had said that it was date night, but it did kind of make sense. They didn't always get to spend time alone just doing normal things, and he knew she appreciated the normal things.
"And what is wrong with that?" The Doctor asked, his arms snaking around Kari as she just stood there.
Clara put her hands up in defence. "Nothing, I just didn't know you two still went on dates, or that you even knew what a date was, Doctor."
"Hey, he can be an old romantic… when he wants to be. I mean, he takes me to so many amazing places, and we have dinner, and just do normal couple stuff." Kari told her, defending the Doctor and trying to explain that he wasn't mad all of the time. "It doesn't happen very often, but it really is nice when it does."
With his arms still around her, the Doctor kissed the top of her head, grateful for what she had just said. "See, Clara? Kari appreciates me and the things that I do." He told the woman in the red patterned dress.
"She's your fiancée, or wife, whatever, she has to say things like that." Clara told him, finally stepping around the console so that she was standing by the pair. "It's kind of like, the thing, or something."
It was clear to Kari that she had absolutely no idea what she was saying, and that her entire argument was completely irrelevant. "Clara, if you've lived for as long as the Doctor has, then you'd understand. It's the little things that matter, that can make the biggest of differences." She said, rather comfortable in the Doctor's arms. "I never thought I would meet anyone, not once did I think it was even remotely possible. But a mad man in a box landed in my garden, and he showed me the stars. We've run from monsters, and aliens, and almost been killed too many times to remember. We are always running, always saving someone, sometimes whole planets, we are always on the move. Those times, those rare times that we aren't protecting the universe, those times are precious to me, to both of us."
"Well, when you put it that way…" Clara said, before smiling at the pair.
"So, yes, we still have date nights. But unlike normal people, our date nights could be months apart, or years, I really don't know. I should probably start keeping check actually, it would make it easier for me to…" Kari quickly shut up when the Doctor put his hand over her mouth.
She looked up at him with a frown on her face. "You were starting to ramble, dear." The Doctor told her, before moving his hand away. "Anyway, as Kari was saying, we are anything but a normal couple. We don't do the normal couple things, we never have and we never will, this is who we are, Clara."
Both of them waited for Clara to reply, to say something, but she just carried on smiling. "Can't argue with that. The boy, his girl, and their box. Nothing in the universe can stop them."
Kari chuckled a little. "Too right, we've been to hell and back, more than once, and we will always make it though." She replied, knowing that it was true. "Now, what do you say, Clara, you going to give our old girl a chance?" Kari hadn't forgotten what she had arrived to, the Doctor trying to get Clara to be nice to their ship, to get along with her, to fly her.
"Oh, go on then, I'll give it a try." Clara said, causing the Doctor to turn a key that was on the console, setting everything to basic mode.
Kari couldn't help but smile as the Doctor kept his arms around her, while he instructed Clara on what to do. She had no idea where that little speech of hers had come from, but it really seemed to have an impact on Clara, which was what she had wanted. She hadn't thought about the words that were coming out of her mouth, they were just spilling out.
"What are you thinking about?" The Doctor whispered in her head, a smile on his face as well. It was actually more like a goofy grin, but it didn't matter to Kari, she was just glad to know that he was happy.
"Wondering where that little speech I gave Clara came from." She told him, being completely honest. "Did it sound harsh to you? Because I think that maybe I was a bit harsh." Kari had been thinking that maybe it was a bit too much, that it may have sounded like she was having a go at Clara, when all she was doing was trying to explain something to her.
The Doctor just held her a little tighter before replying. "It sounded like you knew exactly what you wanted to say. I don't think it was harsh, you were just telling her the truth." He had actually been really impressed with the way that Kari had not only stood up for him and the way he was, but also how she had managed to explain their relationship to Clara.
"Yeah, I guess. I just hope that Clara understands that. I know it's difficult for anyone to understand us and what we have, there are very few people who really understand it." She knew that Jack understood, and so did River, but she wasn't sure that all the other friends she had and people she had met ever understood it all.
They were both brought back to the real world when they heard Clara laughing a little. "I can't believe I'm doing this." She said, her hand on one of the levers and the other a big switch.
It was only then that Kari realised where they were, and what was going to happen next. "No, wait! Doctor, put the shields back up, now!" She shouted, as Clara flipped the switch over, and everything lost power, causing Kari to let out a sigh. "Too late."
"What have I done?" Clara asked, wondering why all the lights had gone out and why all the screens had gone dead. It was clear to see that she thought that she had done something wrong, but Kari knew it was in no way Clara's fault.
The red emergency lights started flashing, and music began to float to their ears. "Er, okay…" Even the Doctor had no idea what was going on and he quickly looked to Kari for help, who avoided meeting his eyes. She knew too much.
Some of the power came back, thanks to the emergency supply, and the screen flicked back on, along with a few of the lights. "Oh, this is so not good. This is very not good. This is very, very far from being good." Kari mumbled, as the Doctor quickly let her go and moved around the console.
Clara followed him, still nervous that it had been her fault. "Doctor?"
He flicked switches, trying to figure out what had happened and how to fix it. "All the electrical impulses are jammed. I can't get the shields back up." He explained, now running around in a bit of a panic. "She's completely vulnerable."
"I swear, I just touched it." Clara protested, seeing that the Doctor was panicking and starting to panic herself. The only one that was even remotely calm was Kari, and that was only because she knew what was going to happen.
"Clara, calm down, it's okay. It's not your fault, you didn't do anything wrong. It's the Doctor's fault, for taking down the shields!" Kari ended up shouting that last bit at the Doctor, who was pushing on one of the levers will all his might.
The console sparked, and a loud bang made them all jump back. "Magnetic Hubble field!" The Doctor shouted, dodging the flying sparks to get back to the console and ignoring the smoke. "We're flying right into it." He explained, doing his best to get the situation under control. "Kari, Clara, stay by me."
Kari was already over with Clara, knowing what was going to happen and ready to face whatever was thrown at her in the TARDIS. She couldn't leave Clara alone, she just wouldn't do it. "Please tell me there's a button you can press to fix this!" Clara shouted over all the bangs and other loud noises caused by the explosions that were happening around them.
"Oh, yes. Big friendly button." The Doctor replied, still trying to get everything under control.
But Clara saw straight through him. "You're lying." It wasn't a question, it was a statement.
"Yep."
"To stop me freaking out?" Kari couldn't help but roll her eyes.
The Doctor replied, but still carried on trying to do something. "Is it working?"
Clara shrugged her should as she tightened her grip on the panel's that were behind her, holding on for dear life. "Not so much." She called to him, before noticing something rolling across the floor.
But Kari was quicker. "Clara, don't!" She cried, reaching down and picking the thing up for herself, knowing what it was going to do and letting out a hiss of pain the moment it was in her hand. "Ow, ow, ow! Hot!" She called, before dropping it and looking at her hand.
The next thing she knew, there was another, much bigger, explosion, and she was thrown off her feet. The Doctor and Clara both got thrown around as well, and Kari heard the Doctor calling her name, before she blacked out.
Three men stood there, all suited up in their uniforms, one of them holding a rather large hammer. "Crack it open." One of the men called, causing the tallest man with the hammer to charge forward, towards the blue box that was lying in its side on a pile of rubbish.
The man kicked at the door with his foot, grunting a little as he did, before starting to batter the door with the hammer. Except, nothing happened. The doors stayed firmly closed and fully in tact, which resulted on them trying another approach to open the box.
With a laser cutter in his hand, the man tried once again to get the doors open. "It's doing nothing." He told the others, who were both standing there, watching him.
"Use the thermo-charge and blast it." One of the two men called as he tossed something over. It seemed like he was rather fed up and annoyed now, as far as he was concerned it was just an escape pod or something similar, it wasn't anything special to him.
"No, no, no, wait!" The youngest of them called. "It's like she's alive." He told them both, reaching out and touching the box while the other man set the charges on the door. Just to prove his point, a strange whirring noise came from the box. "She's… she's suffering. I can feel it. I can feel it."
"That's just robot rant." The man in charge, who was now standing there all on his own, said.
But the tell man wasn't so convinced. "No, Gregor, he's right. Looks like there's a broken fuel line." He said, noticing the smoke starting to billow from the box.
"All right. All right, throw it back." Gregor, the man who kept telling them what to do, ordered. "No salvage today, boys. Open the bay doors."
While the tall man went to open the doors, the younger lad noticed something in tangled in all of the cables that the blue box was sitting on top of. "Wait. Somebody's under that thing. The crew were still on board when we dragged her in." Fear and panic were not flooding his voice. It was clear to see that he was scared.
But Gregor was quick to step in and try to calm him down. "We did nothing. If anyone asks, that ship was already busted. You got that?" He said, before taking the younger one to one side. "And you, make sure you keep your oily mouth shut. All right?"
"It's rude to whispered." The Doctor suddenly called, poking his head in and putting his arms over the men's shoulders. "Hi. I'm the Doctor. And you are…" He quickly looked at the uniforms and noticed the name labels on them. "Van Baalen and… Van Baalen." He said, shaking two of the men's hands. "Van Baalen and Van Baalen. That's going to get confusing later."
"We found you drifting." Gregor told him, his voice completely void of all emotion.
"Yeah, your shop was junked up pretty bad." The taller guy added, but sounding a little nervous.
Only the Doctor knew better, much better, he was one step ahead of them all. "What broke my ship was a magno-grab." He told them, before pulling something out of his pocket. "I found this remote in your pocket. Eh? What are the chances?" The Doctor said, starting to wander around a little. "Outlawed in most galaxies, this little beasty can disable whole vessels unless you have shield oscillators, which I turned off so that Clara could fly, and Kari told me to turn back on. Damn it." He said, before it suddenly hit him. "Kari… Where is she? Girl, gold eyes, gold hair? Probably with a girl about so high, feisty?" He had to ask about Clara as well. The boys all shook their head at him, and the doctor turned to face his box. "She's still on board. They both are."
The Doctor knew he had to get in there to get them both out, he knew that Kari was probably trying to look after Clara, but he needed to get them both out of there. "No, wait! Your pod is leaking fuel." The young one told him. "If they're still in there, they're dead."
But the Doctor wasn't going to give up just like that, and something in the lockers behind everyone caught his attention. "Ah, respirators."
"We can open the doors for a split second, reach in, and grab them." Gregor said, not having any idea just how big that ship really was in the inside.
"Trust me, we can't." The Doctor told them, grabbing the respirators and passing them on to the other men as well. "Now, please, help me get them out."
"I'm telling you, she's fri…" The youngster started, the one who seemed to have the most sense out of the three of them.
"Shut it, tin mouth." Gregor hissed at him, before turning his attention to the Doctor. "What sort of fee are we talking?"
The Doctor was standing on the edge of the TARDIS, ready to get inside, ready to find his Kari and to get her and Clara out of there. "If you help me get them out, you get the machine, all the scrap, eh?" He hoped that it would lure them in, that the offer of his ship as scrap would get them to help him.
"It's not worth the risk. Four feet of metal? Nah." The tall one was definitely not convinced, but he wasn't the one in charge, his brother was.
"What if I can guarantee you the best haul you've ever had?" The Doctor was getting desperate, he knew he was losing them.
"Bram, open the bay doors." Gregor said to his brother, turning away from the Doctor, ready to just leave him, to let him get sucked out into space.
"No, no, please, stop. Listen, listen." All the Doctor could do now was plead with them. "Right behind those doors is the salvage of a lifetime." That finally seemed to get their attention, and it seemed like they were ready to listen to the Doctor, and to possibly help him.
All the Doctor could think about was Kari. He knew that she was still in there with Clara, he could feel it, but he knew that the TARDIS was trying to protect them both. He just hoped that they were together and would stay together until he had found them both. He knew it was going to be bad inside, that there would be toxins in the air that could kill them if they didn't get out of there quick enough.
Inside the TARDIS, Kari was lying on her back in one of the many corridors. There was rubble all around her, pipes and wires and some old style panelling surrounded her. She let out a slight groan as she started to wake up, her whole body aching.
"Doctor? Doctor, Kari?" She heard someone shouting. They actually sounded pretty close, and Kari let out another groan as she tried to move. "Kari? Oh, my God, Kari! Are you all right?" Clara said, rushing over to her and helping her to get up.
"Yeah… yeah, I'm… I'm okay." Kari replied, feeling a little dizzy and a tiny bit sick as well. "You okay?" She asked, before noticing the sound of the Cloister bell tolling in the distance. She knew things were bad if she could hear that going.
Clara held onto her as she stumbled a bit. "Kari, your head…" Clara said, looking at the spot where blood was trickling down Kari's face.
She reached up and touched where Clara was look and let out a slight hiss. "Lovely, blood." Kari moaned, knowing that it would heal quickly, but not liking the fact that she now had blood on her face. "Ow, my hand." She added, feeling a stinging sensation in her hand. When she looked down, she saw the burn and remembered what had happened. "Ah, okay, that explains that." She blew a little on her hand, trying to cool it and sooth it.
"Kari, are you sure you're all right?" Clara asked her, knowing that she was injured and thinking that she was acting a little more strangely than normal.
"Yeah, I'm all right. Apart from, you know, the hit to my head which has caused it to bleed, and that stupid thing I picked up that burnt my hand." Clara gently took her hand and had a look at it, blowing on it herself to try and help. "Anyway, we can't stay here, we have to move." Kari added, not feeling very comfortable in the corridor that was filled with red lights.
The two women walked down the corridor a little, towards one of the doors that led to yet another corridor in the infinite ship. "Red flashing light means something bad. Get out of here fast? Or possibly, whatever you do, don't open this door."
"I'd go for the second one, thank you very much. Come on, we need to get back to the console, we need to find the Doctor." Kari said, knowing that they really shouldn't open that door.
But Clara couldn't resist it, and she pushed the button to the side, which caused the door to slide open. They were faced with a huge ball of fire, barrelling towards them, to which Kari groaned at. "Bad decision." Clara decided, as Kari grabbed a hold of her hand.
"You think?" Kari retorted, dragging her through the corridor as they ran from the fire. "Seriously, Clara, do not touch anything." Kari knew exactly what was going on, and what was going to happen, and she really didn't like it all that much. There was something else there with them, something not good, something very not good.
"So, uh, to the console?" Clara asked her, as they finally managed to escape from the fire when Kari slammed her hand on the button for the doors they had just charged through.
The corridor they were in now wasn't filled with rubble, and the lighting wasn't as red as it had been where they just were. It made Kari feeling only a little calmer. "Yes, console. Best place to find the Doctor, and the best place for us to stay safe." Kari replied, knowing that the Doctor would eventually find them there.
"Wait a minute, what's that?" Clara asked her, walking over to the wall and looking at the long, deep, scratch marks that had been left there. She ran her hand along it, following the trail, until she heard a snarling noise. "Uh, Kari, what was that?" Clara asked her, backing away from the wall and back over to where Kari was standing.
"That… that was something not good." Kari told her, taking a hold of her hand and stepping back. "And right now, I really think we should move. We should go, we should be anywhere but here. Agreed?"
Clara nodded her head at her. "Agreed." She said, before the pair of them opened another of the big, bulkhead style doors and darted through it. "Kari, what's going on here? Do you know what's going on?"
"Uh, possibly." Kari answered, trying to figure out which way they needed to go to get to the console. Everything just looked the same, there was no way for her to tell the difference between the corridors.
But Clara wasn't finished just yet. "Is this one of those times when you know everything? Do you know everything? Do you know what's going to happen?" She was rambling, she was panicking, and she was scared.
Kari stopped walking, and turned to face Clara, grasping a hold of her shoulders gently. "Clara, breathe, just take a nice deep breath and calm down." She said, watching as the woman done what she was told. "Now, what I do know is that the TARDIS is in a pretty bad way. Because the shields were down, we got caught in some idiots magno-grab, and because of that, we are in some serious trouble."
"But we get out of this, right? Everything is going to be okay."
"Clara, stop, breathe." Kari hadn't expected Clara to be so panicky. She didn't remember the woman getting so panicked, she remembered her having some fear, but keeping it together. Right now, she was definitely not keeping it together. "The Doctor is looking for us, and he will find us. We will get out of this, all right?"
The woman nodded at her, pulling herself together. "Okay, okay. Which way to the console?" Clara asked, feeling absolutely lost.
The problem was, Kari wasn't sure either. Her head was really hurting her, and she was finding it a little difficult to focus. But she knew she had to, because she had to keep Clara safe and get her out of there. "Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. Usually she just points me in the right direction, but I have the feeling that she has other things to worry about right now." Kari explained, gently running her hand along the wall.
She felt a slight vibration, and she knew that the ship had heard her. But what she also knew was that she was in pain, and Kari knew why. She knew what those men were going to try and do to her, and she hated it. The TARDIS was a part of her now, she was more than just her home, she was like a mother to her, always looking after her, comforting her in any way she could. Kari couldn't just stand there and let it happen, she had to help, she had to stop them somehow. She didn't care what she had to face, no one was going to upset her Sexy, and no one was going to hurt her.
A/N: I really hope you guys liked it, because there are at least 2 more chapters to go with Clara in it. I did enjoy writing this episode, it was kind of fun to get Kari and Clara together.
A big welcome to all you lovely people who have favourited/followed the story, glad you all are enjoying it. An absolutely massive thank you with hugs and sprinkles for all you wonderful people who have taken the time to leave a review.
As the new series passes by, I am making notes on how Kari will make her way in the episodes, as well as how she will get on with 12. Those who want to see Day of the Doctor, patiences my dears, it is in the pot.
Well, that's all for now. Until next week…
