It's short because it's the prologue :)
One of Grace Ream's earliest memories is of the sun setting over Coruscant. The never-ending traffic and the towering buildings silhouetted against the setting sun was a constant at the end of every day. It's like that now, as she stands in the temple's main hangar, patiently waiting. Any minute now, a shuttle will come to take her to a light cruiser in orbit around the planet.
I'm finally going to join my master on Kamino, is all she can think as she waits. Ashoka and some of the other younglings and padawans her age are standing in the doorway, waving her goodbye. Grace lifts a hand, offering a wave of her own as the shuttle lands near the entrance of the hangar.
As the ramp lowers, she checks over herself one last time. Her dual-bladed lightsaber at her hip and robe around her shoulders. She doesn't have any personal belongings to bring with her, so there's no bag to bring. A clone officer is at the top of the ramp now, beckoning her onto the ship.
So, she squares her shoulders and takes those final steps onto the ship. The ramp raises and as she takes a seat in the cockpit of the shuttle, she takes one last look at the temple.
The light cruiser jolts ever so slightly as it exits hyperspace, and Grace, from her spot on the bridge behind Master Plo Koon, can see the planet of Kamino spread out before her. If she understands correctly Master Plo is dropping her off on his way to some Outer Rim battle.
Master Plo turns to her, "Padawan Ream, I'm afraid I cannot escort you to the surface, or I will be too late to provide reinforcements."
Grace nods, "I understand Master. Thank you for taking time to drop me off."
"Of course, young one. Now go, your master awaits you."
Before she knows it, Grace Ream is stepping off the shuttle and onto the land pad, which is impossibly slick. Her feet slide the moment they step off the ramp and the only reason she doesn't fall is because the clone escorting her grabs her arm, "Careful kid."
Grace nods her thanks to him and rights herself. Which is when she spots the tall, Togruta woman waiting for her underneath the overhang. Her master, Shaak Ti. Grace carefully makes her way over.
Master Ti smiles kindly, "Welcome to Kamino, my padawan."
"Thank you master," Grace fusses with the sleeve of her robe, "I'm glad to be joining you."
"And I am glad you are here. Please, come with me. Commander Havoc, thank you for escorting her."
The clone who stopped her from falling, who must be Havoc, salutes, "Sir, yes sir!" and leaves, heading in the opposite direction Master Ti is going.
Grace hurries to catch up as her master says, "Havoc oversees the recruitment of ARC troopers here on Kamino. I expect you'll see him around quite a bit."
A nervous nod is all Grace can muster as they enter the domed building. The hallway is stark white, with bright lighting. It's such a contrast to the dreary, wet outside that Grace has to blink a few times to adjust her eyes.
Her master continues down the corridor, talking as she goes, "This building is where the young clones are raised and trained. The next one over is for the squads that will soon be deployed. I have quarters in the command building. You will also have quarters there."
Grace follows Master Ti through the building and across a catwalk. She pauses for a second to look down at the clones there. There must be hundreds of them, all the same. Same face, same hair, same clothes. It's slightly disconcerting. Mostly because Grace has never seen a clone that isn't in armor. But she keeps following her master.
This was just the prologue, but feel free to leave a review, they help me keep writing!
