Riju fires bursts of sporadic lightning from her bow at the fleeing Mr. Plum. Mr. Plum hurries through each car, attempting to put distance in between you and him. Riju's explosive projectiles carry the unfortunate drawback of causing carnage throughout the wooden carriers. Mr. Plum opts for an alternate route, shimmying up a ladder to reach the roof. You and Riju give chase, following the mastermind on top of the swift-moving locomotive.
Mr. Plum nears a chimney spewing out large globs of smog. He stops dead in his tracks, unable to move any farther, "Fine, I give up. It was me all along; I confess to committing an unspeakable evil.
"See, I knew it. My deductions were top-notch."
"I ate all the glazed donuts."
"Wait, what?"
"I know I should've stopped myself, but they were so delicious. I couldn't help myself."
"So, you're saying you didn't kill Maxwell."
"No, um, I love my dog."
"I thought you said you hated him earlier—something about him not staying still."
"Sure, my dog is a little rambunctious now and again, but I still treasure his presence."
"Then who killed Maxwell."
Thomas peeks out from behind you, "I did."
"Thomas! But why? I thought you were a good guy."
"I admit it! I waited until we were going into the construction tunnel and hid your chocolate plates under the Plum's table. Then I snagged Maxwell's expensive collar when I went to pet him."
"Is that why you did this. You didn't have to hurt Maxwell."
"It wasn't just about the collar; it's about proving a message. It's about finally getting revenge for the mistreatment my people face. People walk all over me just because I'm poor."
"Can't we find some way to work this out? I'm sure there are good sides to both of you."
"It doesn't matter if there are good sides or bad sides. What matters are actions, and rich people have shown their true colors."
The train crosses a large ravine overlooking a massive pond.
"Pushing the three of you off won't mean death, but it'll still be a rough landing."
"Why the three of us. Link and I haven't done anything wrong."
"No, but you still choose to sympathize with them. It's always Maxwell this and Maxwell that. If you think about it, you're basically doing their bidding—more blind fools who are only in it for the paycheck."
Riju holds a demanding glare as she charges her lightning bow, "Now stop right there. I wasn't helping Mrs. Plum for the money. I did it because I felt sorry for her."
"Ha, what are you going to do, shoot me with that dinky little thing?" Thomas scoffs.
"I'm warning you. Don't come any closer."
"Or what, you'll hit me with that childish toy."
"It's not childish; it means more to me than anything. You tricked me, and now you're going to mock my mother. "I... I"
"I hate you with every fiber of my being," Riju shouts, firing off a massive electrical discharge.
The bolt of lightning strikes Thomas, leaving him briefly stunned. Thomas's body rolls off the train; he dangles there, barely hanging onto the carriage's wooden frame.
Riju reaches out to Thomas, but...
She stops herself.
"Riju, come on, you are going to help me, right? You're my pals, of course, you are going to help me."
Riju thinks about her decision before blindly jumping to Thomas's aid.
Riju watches as Thomas slowly loses his grip.
"Grrgghh, fine, have it your way. Keep rubbing elbows with those rich assholes.
"I'm sorry, Thomas, I wanted to believe in you. I wanted to believe in everyone. But it looks like Mrs. Plum was right. It isn't about if there's any good in you. What matters is if you're a good person or not."
Thomas falls into the valley's gaping mouth, swallowed whole by a translucent pond. Thomas reemerges from the cold drink, chanting hateful lines at the displeased Riju. "This isn't the last of me. Mark my words, wealthy people worldwide will continue to feel my unholy wrath."
Catch the Culprit - Complete *
Later in the day,
A loud ding bounces off the cabin's walls, "Greetings passengers, we have some fantastic news to share. Thanks to two bright-eyed individuals Link and Riju, a villainous operation has been thwarted. We are happy to celebrate this recent revelation, and with these new trusty heroes aboard, we hope your stay continues to remain relaxing and peaceful."
"We did it! And it was all thanks to you, my loyal Watson or Moriarty, whatever you want to go by. Either way, thank you for the assistance. I definitely couldn't have done it without you."
Thanks, Riju; it almost makes me forget that you consider me a sidekick. Almost.
"Here are the two delicious dishes of chocolate cake you ordered. Sorry if it's getting to you a little late," Alice apologizes with a respectful bow.
"If it's chocolate cake, I'll wait for a whole millennium," Riju smirks.
"Oh, sorry, about kicking your boyfriend off the train."
"No, it's okay. We've only known each other for about two days. That's usually how train romances go. You meet them one day, and they get kicked off the rails the next. It's basically a revolving door of boyfriends."
"Oh, maybe I should look into this revolving door, just to one-up the salacious staring Link."
Mrs. Plum approaches your table, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but..."
"Thank you for your support. Without your help, my poor pup's murderer would've never been brought to justice. So I thank you again. Maybe I was wrong about people. Perhaps there is some good in everybody.
"Sure there is, but it's about what you do with that good is what really matters."
"Well said. I couldn't have explained it better myself."
