A/N: Hey everyone, here is the next chapter. We get to see more of Kari and Miss here, I promise. I hope that you enjoy it.
Back in the main cabin they were all sitting around the table, watching a news report. "Localised rain in the cemeteries has resulted in what can only be described as disturbances to the soil. Extraordinary eyewitness accounts are claiming that silver creatures are climbing from the graves." Kari couldn't help but feel very nervous at the moment, and she was trying her best not to show it. Unfortunately for her, the Doctor knew every single one of her little tell tale signs, and he knew that something was up.
"These scenes are being repeated everywhere. Every cemetery, every mortuary, every funeral home, every hospital, the dead are returning to life as Cybermen." Kate announced, each of the screens showing a different news channel, from a different country, but all the headlines the same. She grabbed a control and changed the screens to show something else, something that was far more interesting for them to watch. "We've done heat scans of some of the cemeteries and, in each case only a handful of Cybermen have so far emerged. But every individual burial site is active." They all looked at the screen as they saw a representation of under the graveyard, of the burial plots, and the activity within them.
"Active?" Colonel Amhed said, clearly very confused with the whole situation.
Both the Doctor and Kari knew exactly what that meant. "Hatching." They said at the same time, the Doctor giving a very worried glance over towards her. She caught his eye and just shook her head a little, trying to get him to focus on the problem at hand, and not her.
Kate gave them a slight nod. "More are coming. Potentially millions."
Now Colonel Amhed seemed to catch on, to understand just how serious this really was. "So the rain caused all that in just a few hours?"
"It wasn't rain." Kari told them, resulting in everyone looking at her, including the Doctor. "It was pollen. Cyber-pollen. Every tiny particle of a Cyberman contains the plans to make another Cyberman. All it has to do is to make contact with compatible living organic matter and bang! Full conversion."
The Doctor nodded at her, that look of concern still on his face. "But if they have learned how to convert the dead…" His eyes drifted towards the screen that was showing Missy, down in the cargo hold. Then it all fell into place. "That's what she was doing. That's what 3W was for. She creates an all-new paranoia among the super-rich about dying. She exploits the wealth and the mortal remains of selected idiots so she can create a whole new race of Cybermen. Cybermen who can recruit corpses. Throw away your guns, Man Scout, it's all over. How can you win a war against an enemy that can weaponise the dead?" While he finally understood what was going on, and what Missy's plan was, he still hadn't figured out what was wrong with Kari, and that was bothering him even more.
Before the Doctor had a chance to even ask her anything, Colonel Amhed was speaking once more. "They're not attacking, apart from isolated incidents. They're just wandering about."
"They're newborns. Give them time." Kari said, her eyes not leaving the screen that was showing Missy. She had to be on her guard, she had to be prepared for what was going to happen next, because she was sure as hell going to interfere and do something that was properly going to get her into trouble.
The silence that was filling the air was deafening, until the Doctor decided to break it. "Why were you there this morning? Why were you already attacking?" He asked, looking towards Kate.
"Been investigating 3W for a while, then we got a tip-off." She replied, glancing at Kari who was still fixed on the screen.
"From a woman with a Scottish accent." Colonel Amhed added.
Now something else made a little more sense to the Doctor. "Can't play to the gallery unless there's a gallery, and here I am." He knew that it was to get him there, that Missy wanted him to see it, to witness it all. That was her plan, that was always her plan. "Dead bodies don't have minds, of course, but she's been upgrading dying minds to a hard drive for a long time. So she upgrades the hardware, and then she updates the software."
There was a stunned look on Kate's face. "What do you mean, a long time? How long?" How was that even possible? Kate was certain they would have known about it all sooner.
"Well, she must have a Tardis somewhere, so as long as she likes. The past, the future…" The Doctor told her, trailing off as his eyes fell on Kari once more. Something was wrong, very wrong, and he didn't know what it was.
"How long, Doctor?" Kate pressed, needing an answer.
But it wasn't the Doctor who answered her. "How long has the human race had a concept of an afterlife? Turns out the afterlife is real, and it's emptying. Every graveyard on planet Earth is about to burst its banks." Kari said, before rushing out of the room. She had to get down to the cargo hold, she needed to be there, she needed to stop Missy. There was someone that Kari had to save.
Just as she arrived she heard Missy speaking. "Say something nice." The woman said, her arm wrapped around Osgood's neck.
Kari stopped and assessed the situation, she knew what she needed to do, now she just had to make sure it actually went to plan and worked. "Missy, the Master, whatever you call yourself, I promise, I'm much more useful to you alive." Osgood said, while Kari slowly climbed silently down the ladder and into the room, taking her time, trying her best not to be noticed or make a sound.
"Oh, yeah, that's true. That's definitely true. That is a good point well made. I'm proud of you, sister. But did I mention bananas!" Missy said, reaching into her pocket. That was all Kari needed, and she quickly grabbed onto Missy's arm.
The TARDIS doors suddenly flew open, much to the surprise of both Missy and Osgood. "Let her go." Kari growled into Missy's ear. "Now." She was not playing, and Missy actually tensed up for a moment.
"Why? What are you going to do if I don't?" Missy asked her, trying not to sound as panicked as she really was feeling inside.
Kari leaned in a little closer. "I'll do more than just point a gun at you this time, sister." She spat, feeling her temper rising. After a moment of hesitation the arm that was wrapped around Osgood's neck was removed. "Osgood, get in the TARDIS. Now."
There was a scared and confused look on the woman's face. "Sorry, I don't…"
"Osgood, go. Now!" Kari shouted, wishing that the woman would just listen to her. Didn't she understand what was going on? Didn't she see that Kari was just trying to save her life? Finally she listened and hastily moved towards the TARDIS. The moment she was inside, the doors slammed closed and Kari felt herself relax a little. "Now then, Missy. Why don't you and I have a little chat?"
Missy really didn't know what to think. She had known something had been off with Kari from the start, but she hadn't been able to work out what it was. Now it seemed like she was about to find out. "Come on then, let me have it. Tell me how much you hate me, blady blah blah." She said, acting as if she really didn't care. The truth was, Missy was actually a little bit afraid. She knew what Kari was capable of, and she knew how much she had hurt her in the past.
"Shut up. Just shut up." Kari growled, trying to keep herself calm, to not get as angry as she was feeling. "What is your problem? Seriously. It's just one excuse after the other with you, isn't it?" Kari said, letting go of the woman's arm and beginning to pace around a little. "I mean, you tell me that the drumming stops when you're with me, that I made things better. And then you go and get yourself shot." There was so much that Kari wanted to say, so much that she needed to just let out. "You get shot and refuse to regenerate, when just hours before you healed a bullet wound on me. How Selfish are you?"
"Look, I know that…" Missy started, only to be stopped by a very fierce and angry glare from Kari.
"I am talking! You've done enough of that, now it is my turn. Now you have to listen to me." Kari wasn't going to hold back, not now. "You could have come with us, the Doctor would have let you come with us. But no, you had to be so bloody dramatic! Oh, and then, then you have to go and turn every single bloody human into you! That didn't work out too well for you, did it?" She was on a roll now, and it was not going to stop any time soon. "We used to be friends, all three of us. But you always wanted more, always had to go one step too far. Why?"
There was a look on Missy's face, a sad look. "You haven't been there yet, have you?" She asked, earning a confused look from Kari. "The Gate. That hasn't happened for you yet." There was something about the way she was speaking, the soft, sad tone of her voice, that had Kari a little worried.
"No, I haven't. I know what happens, I've seen it. But you're right, I haven't been there yet." Kari wasn't sure if she should have admitted that to her. It felt like something had shifted in the air between them. Kari didn't seem to feel so angry any more.
"Well then, plenty to look forward to." Missy said, a hint of a smile on her face. "You knew it was me from the start, didn't you?"
Kari let out a sigh, knowing that there was no point in trying to deny it. "Of course I did. I knew as soon as I saw you. Why do you think I was so angry and upset?" And of course, she had every right to be. "Remember, I know more than the Doctor, especially about you. Missy, just stop this. Please, for once, just listen to me and stop this." All Kari wanted was to put an end to this, to stop Missy and for the Earth and rest of the universe to be safe.
For just the briefest second, Kari thought she saw a flicker of kindness flash across Missy's face. Then there was the smile, the sadistic smile on her face once more. "Now, why would I want to do that? The fun is only just starting." She said, before pressing something on the bracelet on her wrist.
That was when everything started shaking, and Kari only just managed to grab onto something before falling over. "You're an idiot! You do know that, right?" Kari shouted at the woman, who seemed to be enjoying what was going on around her.
"Oh, Kari. Lighten up, have a little fun." Missy replied, holding on to some straps and letting herself sway from side to side as the plane started shaking and rocking. "Whee!"
All Kari could do was let out a sigh as she held on tightly. "Doctor, Missy has escaped, Osgood is locked in the TARDIS, and Cybermen are attacking the plane." She called to the Doctor, knowing that there was no point in trying to convince Missy to stop her plan any more. There was no talking to her, no reasoning. At least the Master had given her some hope, hope that he could change, that he really did care. But Missy was something different.
"I'm coming." The Doctor called back to her. That was all she needed to hear. The Doctor was coming to her, no questions asked.
"Might want to hurry. I'm just about ready to throttle her." Oh, how true that was. Kari was so angry with that woman that she wanted to do nothing more than shake her and hope that it knocked some sense into her. She knew it was no good, Missy would never change and that just made things even worse for Kari.
A few minutes later, the Doctor slid down the ladder and rushed over to Kari. "You okay?" He asked, hugging her tightly. He regretted not going after her when she rushed off, for not stopping her or even asking her where she was going. Of course, he had a feeling that she was going down there to talk to Missy, to try and find out what her plan was, but the Doctor didn't know it was going to lead to so much more than that.
"Oh! Oh, ask me!" Missy said, looking far too happy for both Kari and the Doctor.
The Doctor simply glared at her. "Shut up!" He was in no mood for her little games either. He could still feel the anger radiating from Kari, and that was a bit worrying for him.
But Missy wasn't ready to give up yet. "Ask me! Come on, you know you want to." She said, trying to push his buttons. "You want to know what my plan is. You'll be surprised. I've got a gift for you. You know, I've been up and down your timeline, meeting all those silly people who died to keep you alive. And you know what I worked out? What you really need."
"For what?" The Doctor spat. The anger from Kari was starting to radiate to him now, and it would not be very pleasant if he decided to turn into the Oncoming Storm now.
"To know that you're just like me!" Missy announced, before the TARDIS phone began to ring. "Oh, and now it begins. Doctor, I do believe you're on call." The Doctor rushed towards the TARDIS, needing to answer that call. "Miss Oswald expects." That caused him to freeze and for Kari to suddenly remember something very important that she had forgotten. "Who else but the girl who's got your number? Whoops!"
Kari was getting very fed up with the way Missy was controlling everything, manipulating the Doctor. She hated it. "It was you, you gave Clara the number for the TARDIS, telling her it was a computer helpline. But why? Why are you so keen for us to stay together? Tell us." Kari wanted to know, she wanted to know the truth now. Things were different with her there, they were always different, sometimes small little things, sometimes something huge changed with her there. So what would be chaing now?
There was a smirk on Missy's face. "Cos she's perfect, innit? The control freak and the man who should never be controlled and his little wifey. The pair of you would go to hell if she asked. And she would." Kari did not like the way that the woman was talking. "The phone's ringing, Doctor. Can you hear that? Now that is the sound of your chain being yanked. Heel, Doctor!"
"Stop it, Missy." Kari growled, her eyes starting to glow a little. "Stop taunting the Doctor, you leave him alone."
The smirk on her face only grew bigger. "Oh, and look at you. The pretty little wife. Never gets jealous, never runs away. You should though. Be jealous that is." Missy was enjoying her little games, the way that the Doctor was freaking out was such a pleasure for her. And now she was hoping to do the same to Kari. "Would he do for you what he'd do for her? Would the Doctor really put you before anyone else, even precious little Clara?"
Kari knew what she was doing, it wasn't the first time someone had tried that on her, and it wouldn't be the last either. "Yes. He would. Now shut it." She told her, before turning to face the Doctor and giving him a nod.
The Doctor swiftly picked up the phone. "Clara?"
"Doctor. With Danny."
"Danny's dead, Clara." He replied, not sure what was going on. He had noticed the sad and worried look on Kari's face, so he knew something wasn't right somewhere.
Kari listened in to the call, even though she already knew exactly what Clara was saying. "Not yet. Not quite. But he wants to be."
"Clara… Clara?" Kari reached out and took a hold of the Doctor's hand. She hated this, she hated what their friend was going through.
They both waited until Clara spoke again, her voice soft and calm, even in the terrible situation she was being faced with. "He's a Cyberman. Doctor, Danny's a Cyberman. And he's crying. Doctor, he feels it. He's crying."
Kari closed her eyes and let out a shaky breath. "His emotional inhibitor isn't turned on. Technically, he is more Danny Pink at the moment than Cyberman. But turn that thing on, and Danny Pink is gone forever. Turn it on and he will feel nothing. Forever."
The Doctor understood everything that Kari was saying, and now the way she was acting was making more sense as well. "Clara, don't do it. Just don't do it! If you turn it on he'll become a Cyberman." Things were just getting worse now. There were alarms blaring around Kari and him, the plane was being attacked and it was looking like they were going to be going down very soon.
"He's already a Cyberman." Clara's voice was still so calm, but Kari knew just how much pain and hurt her friend was really going through at that moment.
Both Kari and the Doctor also knew there was more to it, to him already being a Cyberman. While his body had been mostly converted, his heart and soul had not yet been taken. Danny Pink was still there. "Not yet, he isn't."
"He's hurting because I hurt him and he wants it to stop." Guilt was flooding her. Clara had spent so long lying to Danny, hiding things, about Kari, about the doctor, about her life. Now he was dead, and she felt an overwhelming sense of guilt from it all.
The Doctor just wished that he could get through to her, that she could see that making the pain stop would not make things any better. "Stop the pain and he'll kill you!
"Look, are you going to help me, because I can't do this alone."
Kari yanked the phone from the Doctor's hand, deciding that it was her turn to speak with her. "Clara, listen to me, I know how much Danny means to you, believe me, I really do know. I also know how much he loves you. He would go to the end of time itself for you, trust me." She had to do something, to help them both, because both Clara and Danny were suffering. "Yes, if you turn on the inhibitor then all that pain and heartache for Danny will stop. You turn it on and all feelings are gone. You turn it on and Danny Pink is gone. Emotions make us who we are, they're a part of us. We can't make this choice for you, Clara. Turn it on, and Danny is dead. Turn it on and he becomes a Cyberman, and there is every chance he will kill you, because he won't be Danny Pink, the man you love so much."
There was silence, and Kari was certain that she could hear Clara sobbing a little. "Look, the Tardis can home in on this call, right? Either you help me, or you leave me alone." Clara said, while Kari closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She knew what choice she had made, she knew what Clara was going to do now.
Kari replaced the phone into its little box on the front of the TARDIS and looked at the Doctor. "She's made her choice, Doctor. Let's just hope that it's the right one."
Before the Doctor had a chance to reply, Kate came rushing down the ladder and into the hold with them. "Doctor! The Cybermen are in. The plane's going down." There was clear panic in her voice.
"Oh, great. It's the daughter one." Missy said, sounding really rather bored. "Do you like her? I like her." Before anything else was said, the woman pushed one of the buttons on her bracelet again, making the plane sharply veer to one side. Kate and the Doctor both quickly grabbed onto the straps that were hanging from the ceiling, just as the cargo hatch opened in a shower of sparks. Kari was already hanging on tightly to some cargo netting, knowing what was going to happen next and really not looking forward to it.
Suddenly, Kate screamed, as she was sucked out of the plane, her body now falling through the air. "Why did you do that? You didn't have to do that!" The Doctor shouted. Yes, he had liked her. She was the daughter of one of his greatest friends. And now she was plummeting to her death.
Now the three of them that were left were holding on for dear life. The Doctor was struggling to hold on as he feared being sucked out too, along with Kari. "Oh, don't be so selfish. I'm going to miss her, too." Missy called to him. "In fact, you know what? Just for that, I'm leaving." She said, before laking into her bracelet. "Boys, blow up this plane and, I don't know, Belgium, yeah? Kill some Belgians. Might as well. They're not even French. Byeeee!" Then she disappeared, leaving the Doctor and Kari alone in the uncontrolled plane which was going to crash or blow up, or maybe even both.
The plane started veering to the side once more, and the Doctor lost his footing, he was now hanging dangerously close to the open hatch. "Doctor, hang on!" Kari called to him, swinging herself around, knowing what was going to happen and trying to get herself in a better position for when it all happened.
"Kari!" The Doctor cried, before losing his grip a little more. Then there came a rather long bang, and Kari knew that her time was up. "Kari!" He called again, before his gripping finally letting go.
She watched as he was sucked out of the plane. "Don't worry, I'll save you for a change." She muttered to herself, just as the TARDIS doors flew open. Kari wasted no time in throwing herself through the open blue doors, knowing that any moment now the TARDIS would be off and out of there, out to save the Doctor.
Kari made it with a bump, and quickly glanced around, expecting to see Osgood there, waiting and confused. "Please don't tell me she's gone wandering?" She whispered, hoping that something awful wasn't going to happen. There was a hum from the ship, one that Kari knew was telling her not to worry and to focus on the job at hand. "Right, falling Doctor. Got it." She said, before charging around the console, getting ready to go and save him.
A few moments later she rushed over to the doors, wrenching them open and spotting the Doctor heading towards them. Kari held out her hand while the Doctor reached for hers. It was strange, the roles being reversed and her having to save him in that way, reaching out and pulling him into the TARDIS.
They both landed on the floor of the magical ship and the doors slammed closed behind them. The Doctor was hovering over Kari, his arms just stopping him from crushing her. "That was good timing." He said, impressed with her rescue mission.
Kari couldn't help but smile at him. "Thank you. Now come on, we need to go to Clara. She needs us." They had to move, they had to get there quickly, before Clara finally turned the inhibitor on.
The pair of them dashed around the console, homing in on the call that Clara had made, even though Kari knew exactly where they needed to be. The moment they landed the Doctor was out of the door, dragging Kari along with him. "Clara, don't!" He shouted, spotting the woman a short distance away, in front of a Cyberman. They had landed in a graveyard, and it was filled with newly born Cybermen.
Clara stopped and looked at her friends as they came rushing over. "Help me." There was so much desperation in her voice, and it just broke Kari's hearts to see her that way. Clara would never fully understand just how much of a friend she was to both her and the Doctor.
"If you do what you're trying to do, if you succeed, he will snap you." The Doctor warned her, not wanting to take any chances. But Clara didn't want to listen, to believe him. "Then he will step over your broken body and break another, and another, and another. He will never stop."
Danny had been listening to everything. He wasn't about to let them just talk about him as if he wasn't there. "I will not harm her." He announced, trying to convince the Doctor that he would never hurt Clara. Kari believed him, but the Doctor was going to need a little more convincing.
The Doctor looked over at the Cyberman, before rushing over to him. He let out a gasp as he saw what had been done to him. He was in a state of shock himself. "PE… PE… PE…" He said, his nickname for Danny.
"Sir."
Kari was still standing with Clara, but watching the Doctor and Danny closely. "I had a friend once. We ran together when I was little. And I thought we were the same. But when we grew up, we weren't." The Doctor told him, knowing that he needed Danny's help as well. "Now, she's trying to tear the world apart, and I can't run fast enough to hold it together. The difference is this." He placed a hand on Danny's metal chest, over the place where the emotional inhibitor was. "Pain is a gift. Without the capacity for pain, we can't feel the hurt we inflict."
Even though his face was deformed, it was easy to see that there was a look of disbelief on it. "Are you telling me seriously, for real, that you can?" Danny asked the Doctor.
"Of course I can." The Doctor was offended, he knew the pain he inflicted. It didn't mean that he was proud of it, it just meant that he understood.
However, Danny wasn't impressed with that at all. "Then shame on you, Doctor."
"Yes. Oh, yes.' He hadn't been expecting anything else from the man that Clara loved. Suddenly the dark clouds above them began to rumble, it sounded an awful lot like thunder. The Doctor knew that he had to move quickly now. "Danny, Danny, I need you to tell me. What are the clouds going to do? What is the plan?" He was starting to get desperate, he needed the answers to so many questions.
Danny just looked at him through his human eyes in a metal suit. "How would I know?"
"You're part of a hive mind now. Presumably that's how you found Clara. Just look." Even Kari could hear the desperation in his voice now as she stepped over to stand beside him.
The two men were just staring at each other now, paying no attention to either Kari or Clara. "I can't see much."
"Look harder." The Doctor insisted. Time was quickly running out, he needed to know what the plan was so that he could stop it, so that he could save the Earth and the whole universe one more time. So that he could stop Missy and her plans, and maybe even find Gallifrey.
Danny looked past the Doctor and Kari. "Clara, watch this. This is who the Doctor is. Watch the blood-soaked old general in action." He told her, before looking back at the Doctor. "I can't see properly, sir, because this needs activating. If you want to know what's coming, you have to switch it on. And didn't all of those beautiful speeches just disappear in the face of a tactical advantage? Sir." The Doctor took a few steps back, taking Kark along with him.
A sad look crossed Kari's face as she gazed upon Danny. "There's another way." She announced, getting everyone to look at her. "There always is and always has been another way. As long as I'm here, there is another way."
"Kari…" The Doctor said, trying to work out what was going on in her head.
She ignored him and walked back over to Danny, so that she was standing in front of him. "Danny Pink. I don't know you very well, and I'm sorry for that. But what I do know about you is that you would do absolutely anything for Clara, and she would do anything for you. The inhibitor doesn't need to be turned on to find out what the plan is, I can simply tell the Doctor." She said, knowing full well that both the Doctor and Clara were watching her with great intent. "But this isn't about that. About the Cybermen and their plan. This is about you and Clara." Kari said, motioning for her friend to come and stand beside her. "This choice has to be between you. It has absolutely nothing to do with me or the Doctor. Clara can turn it on, she can stop all these feelings, these emotions. But if she does, there is no going back. You will be a Cyberman, not Danny Pink."
Danny seemed to chuckle a little. "Danny Pink is dead."
"Well… mostly dead." Kari said, hoping that she was getting through to him. "If this is turned on, you may not recognise us, or Clara. You could end up killing her." She added, needing him to know every risk, knowing that he needed all the information before making his decision. "Or you could end up saving the whole world. Only you and Clara can do this, make this choice." When she finished she took a step back over to the Doctor. She had said her piece, she had given all the information she could to make him understand.
A/N: I really do hope that you all enjoyed that chapter. I loved writing this different dynamic between Kari and Missy. Also, I couldn't just let Osgood go like that now could I?
Thank you to all who have left a review, I appreciate hearing about what you think of my stories. Thank you also to all those who have followed/favourited. I really am surprised to see that so many people are still reading this, but it has encouraged me to keep on going.
So, until the next time,
Pippa.
