A/N: Hi all! I hope you are all well. I have been working on this original adventure for a little while now. It isn't finished just yet, but it is going to play a big part in something that will happen in the future. If things don't make sense, I'm sorry, there is a reason and it will all come together eventually. I hope you enjoy it.
Kari let out a groan. Her head was spinning like crazy and her stomach was in knots. She managed to force open her eyes with some effort and discovered that she was gazing up at a sky that was being blocked by the branches and leaves of far too many trees. "Okay, that's… weird." She said, before using a great deal of strength to push herself up onto her elbows and look around. "I am pretty sure that this is not where I last was, or where I should be."
Something definitely felt wrong. The last thing that Kari remembered was being in the TARDIS with her bow tie wearing, fez loving Doctor. They had just landed on a planet that was terraformed to look exactly like Earth, but the Doctor had been worried about something. Then they were plunged into darkness. Kari couldn't remember anything after that.
"Doctor?" She called, hoping that he was nearby, that she wasn't actually in a forest on her own. "Doctor!" There was no response, well no human response, a few birds decided to give her a fright by screeching and flapping out of the trees around her. "Right, lovely. In a forest on my own." Kari grumbled, before realising that she was holding onto something in her left hand. "Oh… this can't be good." Her hand was tightly clutching the Doctor's sonic screwdriver. "Right, don't panic. Keep it calm and just think. What happened? How did I get here? Where is the Doctor? Where is the TARDIS?" While she was trying so hard to contain her worry and fear, it was very quickly reaching the surface.
Not really knowing what to do, or even with some kind of plan, Kari got herself up and decided that there was no point in staying where she was. She needed to figure out what had happened and she knew that she was not going to be able to do that by just sitting there on the dirty ground. Kari could feel both of her hearts beating madly in her chest, but she did her best to ignore it. There was something that was making her feel like she was being watched, and not just by the animals that were no doubt living in this forest she was stuck in.
Kari decided to try calling for the Doctor again, only this time she rummaged through her pockets and pulled out her phone. She hit the call button the moment she had the number for the TARDIS on the screen. "Come on, Doctor, pick up the phone." She muttered as it began to ring. "Come on…"
Suddenly the ringing stopped and she heard a voice that made her stop. "Hello?" Kari froze when she heard the female voice that answered the phone. "Hellooo?" The woman's voice called again. "Look, if you're not going to say anything then I'm hanging up."
"No, wait, don't!" Kari quickly called, "Don't hang up!" There was panic in her voice, and for so many reasons now.
"Who is it?" A voice called from the other end, a man's voice this time, one that Kari knew very well.
"Do not tell him!" She quickly hissed. "You do not tell him that it is me. Tell him it's Jack or something."
There was silence at the other end for a moment before she heard speaking again. "It's Jack. I left my phone in my room, he started panicking like he always does when I don't answer so he called Sexy instead. Tell you what, while I see what he wants, can you go and make us a cuppa?" There was a little chatter in the background while Kari waited, then silence. "Right, he's gone. Care to explain why I am currently talking to myself?" There was actually a hint of amusement in the other person's voice now and Kari couldn't help but roll her eyes. "Hey, I saw that!"
Kari let out a sigh, knowing that she had a lot of explaining to do. "Well since I have no recollection of this conversation I am assuming that you are from my future. Since you are from my future you will know all about where I am and what the hell happened and may be able to help me." At least she hoped that she was going to be able to help her.
"Yes, I am you from some point in the future. Yes, I do remember this call, no, I can't really help you." The other Kari said, letting out a sigh of her own. "The reason I can't really help you is because I don't… I don't remember it all. It's all kind of fuzzy. But you have his screwdriver right?"
The metal tube was still being gripped tightly in her hand. "Yeah, I have it. But why do I have it? And where is the Doctor? The last thing I remember is being in the TARDIS and now I wake up and I'm laying in a bloody forest somewhere. What happened?" There was a hint of frustration in Kari's voice now.
"I wish I could tell you more, Kari, but I can't. You know that." Other Kari said, letting out a long breath. "But trust me, everything will be fine in the end. You'll find the Doctor and the TARDIS and everything will be absolutely perfect."
Unfortunately, Kari was speaking to herself, and she knew when she wasn't exactly telling the truth. "Oh please don't try to lie to me. I'm you, remember? I know!" She growled, not happy with herself for even thinking that she could lie to her. "Just tell me… how bad does it get? Are we talking Trickster bad or just a normal alien invasion bad?"
There was silence for a few moments before she received a reply. "I wish it had just been a normal alien invasion bad. Use the Doctor's screwdriver, it will help you to get out of the forest. Keep your eyes and ears open. And Kari, remember that you are not on Earth." There was no doubt that she was trying to reassure herself that things would be okay, but it really didn't stop the anxious and nervous feeling that they both now had.
"Is… is the Doctor okay? Is he in trouble? Is he hurt?" There was still so much that was running through her mind, so many questions that she had. Not just about what was happening now, but about the future, about where her life with the Doctor would lead. It wasn't very often that she had a chance to talk to herself, not in this capacity anyway.
The other Kari chuckled a little. "He is fine. You know what he is like, worrying about us. I promise you, he is not hurt. Okay? Now you have to go, and so do I. The Doctor is taking us to… nope. I'm not going to spoil it for you." She said, chuckling a little at the fact she nearly revealed a spoiler to herself. "Everything will work out. You will find the Doctor and you will both get out of this alive."
Kari let out a groan at hearing those words. "That doesn't sound very reassuring, you know." She hated when people said things like that, it usually meant that while they made it out alive it was going to be a close one.
"Yeah, sorry. It's like someone saying 'what could possibly go wrong' isn't it? First thing you need to do is get out of the forest. I know you can do it, just focus on getting out of there and you will find him, okay?"
"Right, get out of the forest and find the Doctor." Kari was actually feeling a little deflated. While it was nice, and strange, to talk to herself, she felt that she hadn't really been much help.
The other Kari knew was how she was feeling. "Hey, it's going to be okay. I know you feel like I haven't helped at all, but believe me, I've given you everything you need. Now go! Our mad man with a box needs you." She said, before ending the call without so much as a bye.
For a few moments, Kari just stood there, trying to compose herself, to pull herself together and figure out what was going on and what she was going to do. Suddenly, the air around her felt very cold and still and a shiver went down her spine. She could hear nothing, surrounded by silence. "Yeah, time to go." Kari announced as she hurriedly started trudging through the forest. She had no idea where she was going, but she didn't care, she needed to get moving and away from that awful feeling she had.
It had never occurred to her before that she would actually have an encounter with herself from a different point in time. She knew it had happened for others, the Doctor had met himself on several occasions and she had always found them to be amusing. But this had been different.
She had no time to dwell on it, Kari needed to get out of the forest. "Okay, so what would the Doctor do? If he was lost in a forest, what would he do?" She wondered as she carried on walking, trying to find an actual path or anything that would help her. So far she was just wandering amongst the trees and foliage around her. She couldn't even find any trace of how she got there. She was leaving footprints and a trail behind her as she walked, but there hadn't been one leading to where she had woken up. "Well, first of, the Doctor would never get lost in a stupid bloody forest." Kari grumbled, getting rather irritated.
All of the trees just looked the same and every now and again she would hear the sound of birds chirping, but they would stop abruptly when she looked around to find where the creatures were. Kari was starting to get a little tired, she had been walking for what felt like hours, stepping over the large trunks of fallen trees, making her way through the tangle of plants that blocked her path. Eventually she came to an opening and was pleasantly surprised to see a glimmering, still lake before her.
A hint of relief washed over her as Kari trudged towards the water's edge and sat on the slightly damp grass. While the sun was shining in the sky, it wasn't right. This was the first time she had actually been able to see the sky and was unsettled by the fact that there were more than a single source of light up there. "Huh, two suns." She muttered to herself as she continued to gaze into the sky. Now that she was looking, it was clear to see that this wasn't the Earth that she was so used to. The colours around her were a little off, the leaves on the trees were too green, the water was too clear and the sky was too blue with not a cloud in sight.
Now that she was feeling a little less anxious and worried, Kari began thinking out loud. "So, Doctor, why would you give me your screwdriver?" She asked herself, looking down at it as she held it tightly in her hand. "You don't just give your screwdriver to anyone, not even me. Especially when I have my own…" Kari sharply reached into her impossible pocket and pulled out her own sonic screwdriver. "What do I need two for? Mine works perfectly fine…" As she said that, she turned her screwdriver on, watching as the end lit up and it let out a buzzing sound. "Nothing wrong with that. Working perfectly fine, thank you very much." A moment later, she slipped it back into her pocket.
Nothing made sense. Kari was trying so hard to remember what had happened to work out how she had gotten there, to figure out where the Doctor was. She came up with nothing every single time. Without really thinking about it, she turned the Doctor's screwdriver over and over in her hand, before turning it on. She straightened her body as along with the familiar buzzing sound, something else happened.
"Kari, I have to do this." A projection of herself and the Doctor inside of a darkened TARDIS appeared before her. "You don't understand." Kari just watched as the scene played out in front of her.
The projected Kari was following the Doctor around the console. "Then tell me, Doctor. The only way I can understand is if you tell me what is going on. I know that you know what is going on. So why won't you tell me?"
Kari stood up and watched the projection closely, hoping that it would give her a few clues as to what was going on. "I can't, Kari. I can't." There was something about the way that he was speaking that broke Kari's hearts. The tone of his voice, the look on his face, it worried her. "I just… I can't." The projected Doctor stopped what he was doing and held onto the Kari that was with him and rested his forehead gently against hers.
"Doctor, please… you are really scaring me now. Please, just tell me what is going on." There was desperation in Kari's voice as she spoke, she knew that something was terribly wrong. Usually the Doctor would lie to her or keep things from her to keep her safe, so now she was worried about just how much danger they were really in.
"I'm sorry." The Doctor whispered to her, while the non-projection Kari watched as he slowly entangled his hands in her hair. She knew what was coming next, he had done it to her so many times now, she knew this move of his. A second later and the Kari that was with him collapsed. The Doctor gently lowered her to the glass floor of the TARDIS and kissed the top of her head. "I'm sorry, Kari, but this is to keep you safe."
"Safe from what, Doctor? What is going on?" Kari called, wishing he could hear her.
To her utter surprise he turned and seemed to look straight at her. "Kari, if you're seeing this, then everything is fine. You are safe. The TARDIS took us to Terra Earth, and not for the first time. I don't know how much you remember about us arriving, but our TARDIS was attacked." The Doctor said, his words now being directed right to her.
Kari swallowed the lump in her throat. "Attacked by what?" She asked, wondering if he was going to answer that question. Maybe he had a transcript, like he did before with the Angels and the house at Wester Drumlin.
She watched as the Doctor let out a sigh. "The last time we were here, we… I made a few enemies." He said, before glancing down at the sleeping body that was with him. "I had to get you out of here and somewhere safe."
"Oh yeah, because being stuck in the middle of a forest with no idea where you are is totally safe." Kari snorted, having a feeling that he was not going to tell her anything.
"I know you're angry with me. You hate it when I make you sleep" He was correct, Kari really did hate it when he did that, and she had told him so on several occasions now as well. "And also because I sent you away. Honestly, it is to keep you safe." The Doctor said, before there was a loud explosion heard from where he was. "I have to go out there. I have to fix this. You have my sonic. I'll find you, I promise. I will fix this and then find you, Kari."
All Kari could do was watch as the Doctor placed his sonic screwdriver in her hand before the projection ended and she was left just standing there, even more confused than she had been before. "Oh, Doctor. What trouble have you gotten into?" She muttered to herself, rubbing her head and sitting back down again. "We should have just stayed in bed."
Kari was just about to put the Doctor's screwdriver away when it started beeping, the end flashing green with each beep. A frown formed on her face as she looked at it. "Okay, so what are you trying to tell me?" She asked, holding onto it tightly and trying to work out what the beeping meant. Then it hit her, the Doctor had uploaded a piece of software onto his screwdriver, software that could help her.
She stood up once more, a glimmer of hope now in her eyes. "Okay, Doctor, show me the way." she said, before turning on the spot, listening carefully to the sound the screwdriver was making. The beeping seemed to get faster when she faced one particular direction. "Well then, I guess this is the way that I need to go." Kari was now determined. Finally she had a plan and it gave her the boost in confidence and attitude that she needed. Kari just hoped that the Doctor really was okay and not in too much trouble. She knew just what he was like and how much trouble he could end up in, even just by accident.

While Kari was making her way through an unknown forest on her own, the Doctor knew exactly where he was, surrounded by arm guards. "Guys, come on, this is all just a big misunderstanding." He told them, his arms behind his back with his wrists in cuffs. "Why don't we all just have a chat, sort this out, eh?" While he was trying to keep his tone light, there was a hint of worry in his voice.
"Shut up and keep walking." One of the guards growled at him, shoving him on the shoulder to make him move quicker and to stop dawdling. They carried on walking down the long, dim corridor, the metal walls and floor making every step they took echo.
There wasn't really much else that the Doctor could do. He didn't have his screwdriver, he had given that to Kari before he had used the TARDIS transmat to get her out of there. He was just going to have to think of something really clever to get himself out of this one and then go get his Kari back.
His mind carried on working, trying to formulate a plan. He didn't even notice when they had reached their destination. He stood before a large, ornate metal door which had to be at least 12 foot high. It was only when the doors were open that the Doctor finally came back to his senses. One of the guards shoved him through the open doors before they swiftly slammed shut behind him.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the Doctor." A woman's voice called through the dimly lit room. It was a rather large room, with high ceilings and no windows whatsoever. All that was in the room was a throne like chair, and the person who was sitting in it. "Decided to come back and face your punishment?" The Doctor stayed silent, much to her dislike. "And where is your pretty little wife? Kari has to face the consequences of her actions as well."
At hearing her name the Doctor's eyes darkened. "She isn't here. I don't know where she is. Right now she could be anywhere in the whole of time and space." That was only partially true, he didn't know exactly where she was, but he knew she wasn't anywhere in time and space.
The woman chuckled a little. "The Doctor never goes anywhere without his darling wife. So I'll ask you again, Doctor. Where is she?" There was nothing but spite in the woman's voice as she spoke, it was clear she had a problem with not just the Doctor, but Kari as well.
"I've told you, Cora. She isn't here." The Doctor replied, taking a step closer towards her. "Everything that happened, that was on me, not her." He needed to take the focus away from Kari, he needed all of the attention to be on him. That was why he had sent her away after all.
Cora stood up sharply and marched towards the Doctor, the heels of her shoes clicking against the metal floor as she did and her long green dress, which looked very much like an evening gown, swished behind her. "How dare you use my name!" She hissed at him, only stopping when she was in front of him. "You will address me as President." It was easy to see that she was getting angry with him. "Why are you here? Did you not cause enough damage last time?" She held her head high, causing the jewels that were tucked into her ornately done hair to glitter and sparkle.
The Doctor looked at the woman, a fire starting to burn in his eyes. "Oh no, we put a stop to the damage you were causing last time. You were lucky we got here when we did, you were poisoning not just the planet but the people!" That fire in his eyes was now growing. While he knew Kari hadn't been there yet, he had. He knew everything that was going to happen for her, of what had happened the last time they were there.
At his words, Cora scoffed. "We were on the edge of a breakthrough. Years and years of research, gone. Because of you and your wife. We were improving this place, making it better, making the people stronger, giving them the chance to live longer lives. You took that away from them." She said, before turning her back to him and casually going back to her throne. "In your absence you were charged with treason, destruction and murder. You will be executed at the second sunset for your crimes. When we find Kari, she will suffer the same fate as you. If we find her in time maybe you can both die together."
The Doctor didn't take too kindly to threats, even more so when they were ones directed at his Kari. "You will not lay a finger on her!" He shouted, rage coursing through him. "You will never find her, and I will never let you or anyone else hurt her."
A smirk stretched across the woman's face. "Oh, so protective, aren't you? The thing is, Doctor, I will get her. Because I know that while you would do anything for her, she would do anything for you. The moment she hears about your execution, she'll come running to save you." Cora was sounding rather pleased with herself, while the Doctor tried his best not to show some panic that he was feeling. "So all I need to do is make the announcement and wait. Enjoy your stay, Doctor."
The heavy doors behind the Doctor opened and the guards that escorted him there came marching in. While two grabbed a hold of him, one on either side, another man approached Cora. There was something about the expression on his face that made the Doctor think something wasn't right. "Lady President, there have been…" The man paused, choosing his words carefully, knowing that there was a traitor in the room. "Incidents which need your attention."
Hearing that, Cora's face dropped and the smirk that she had been wearing quickly vanished. "Explain!" She shouted towards the man. It was clear as day to anyone that she was not happy.
The guard looked between the Doctor and Cora with nervousness. "There… uh, there's been more… activity…" The Doctor couldn't help but raise his eyebrow at this. He had been wondering why the TARDIS had taken them there, because he knew it wasn't so that he could be sentenced to death.
"Then get a task force together and deal with it." Cora spat, she wasn't just angry now, she was utterly seething. "Isn't that what you are here for? Now get out!" The guard did exactly what he was told and hurried out of the room. "Now then, Doctor. If you haven't noticed, I have a planet to run."
"You're scared, Cora." The Doctor called to her as she walked past him and towards the door herself. "Whatever is happening here, I can help you."
She stopped in her tracks and turned to face him. "What is happening here was caused by you! You and Kari! You caused this when you interfered the last time. I will not let you cause any more damage! Now take him away!"
The Doctor tried to struggle, to get the woman to listen to him, to try and find out what was really going on, but no amount of yelling seemed to make a difference and he was dragged out of the room. He tried speaking to the guards that were escorting him down the dingy metal corridor, but they simply ignored his words. All he could really do was hope that he could come up with a plan and make a grand escape before it was too late.

Kari felt like she had been walking for hours. She was still following the sound coming from the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, which was still tightly held in her hand. It hadn't been an easy journey so far, she had tripped several times which had resulted in a few cuts, scrapes and bruises. She had also been hit in the face by a few low hanging branches as well. Her hair was a mess and she was starting to look like she had been dragged through a hedge backwards. Kari was starting to think that she was never going to make it out of that forest.
Suddenly she heard a rustling noise behind her. Kari held her breath as she stopped in her tracks. There had been that feeling that she was being watched for such a long time now that she was absolutely certain that there was someone or something there, following her, watching her every move. Then she heard it again, louder closer. There was no chance that she was going to hang around and find out exactly what it was that had caused that nose, or that had been following her so she made herself move as quickly as she could.
It seemed that whatever had been watching her was not going to let her get away and Kari heard the sound of rushing footsteps behind her. "I'm going to yell at you so much when I find you, Doctor." She muttered to herself as she tried her best not to trip. "I am going to yell at you so…" Kari didn't finish her sentence, instead she let out a small scream as she finally tripped and fell to the ground. This was all that was needed for her pursuer to catch up to her. A towering figure now stood over her as she lay face down on the forest floor, a trickle of blood running down from a cut on her head, Kari was out cold.
A/N: So I hope that you all enjoyed the opening to this, there are currently at least 4 chapters for this little adventure (with more to still to come). I'm not sure where this idea came from but since it hit me my brain has been bubbling and it just will not stop! There are so many things that can/will happen. I just don't know where to stop!
I've also been thinking ahead, about what episodes to do next. I had a lovely long message from one of you lovely readers who asked/said so much that I admit I. had to read it several times to soak it all up. I am planning a Cyberman episode soon, so keep your eyes open for that one. I was asked about Kari's regeneration. Now that it something that I have always worried about, but I have got something in the works that will take a look at it.
There is also something else that has been on my mind recently, or someone. The Master. Is it too soon to have another story with the Master in it? Let me know because I have got far too many ideas for that as well!
As always, a massive thank you to all of you that have left a review, I really do appreciate it. To all who have followed/favourited this story, thank you! I am glad that you enjoy it and want to keep updates!
Well, that's all for now folks! So until the next time,
Pippa.
