A/N: Sorry, I know it's been a little while since I last updated. You know what life is like, things happen and plans change. But never mind that. Here is the next chapter for you to enjoy.

The Doctor was pacing around in the cell that he had been placed in. He needed to find a way to get out of there, to get back to the TARDIS and then go pick Kari up from wherever the TARDIS had sent her. He was regretting not leaving the moment that he realised where they were. If he had, then he wouldn't be stuck in this situation and he would know exactly where Kari was, and most importantly he would know that she was safe.

Through the tiny barred window he could just about see the outside world. The first sun was already setting, and he knew it wouldn't be long until the second followed. The Doctor let out a sigh. If only he had his screwdriver, he may have been able to get out of there. But he had given that to Kari. Time was running out.

While he was trying to formulate a plan in his head, heavy footsteps echoed along the corridor leading to his cell, getting louder. Whoever they belonged to was approaching the Doctor's cell. It was just making him more nervous, it was too soon for them to come and collect him, too soon for his execution.

"Follow me. No sudden movements, and no talking." The man who had stopped before him said, pulling out a ring full of keys and unlocking the barred cell gate. All the Doctor could do was nod at him, waiting to find out what was going to happen next. He wasn't certain, but there seemed to be something a little off about the man.

They started walking in absolute silence, it was just making the Doctor more and more nervous. They hadn't actually passed anyone else either, which just added to his growing list of worries. "I remember you from the last time you were here. A lot of things have changed since then." The man said, keeping his eyes set ahead and not even glancing at the Doctor. "The people are more cautious, suspicious of everything. They no longer follow what the President or other leaders say like little lost lambs. They have their own ideas and imaginations. You gave that to them."

The Doctor desperately wanted to say something, to ask about what was going on now, to find out if things were better or worse for the people of Terra Earth. But for once, he was doing as he was told. If Kari had been there she would have warned him to just keep his mouth shut and keep walking. So for a change he was doing what he had been told to. Amazingly, it seemed to be working to his advantage as the man walking with him couldn't stop talking.

"There is a rebellion. They want to take down the world's governments and make changes. They want control of their world, of their lives." The man told him, before stopping and looking at the Doctor. "And that is all thanks to you and the Angel." His words confused the Doctor. Was the man thanking him or being sarcastic? He had never been very good at working out those kinds of things, he needed his Kari for that. "Will you help us?"

Now the Doctor was most definitely confused. "Help you what?"

"Help us gain our freedom, Doctor." The man said, a spark of hope glimmering in his eyes.

Things were slowly falling into place for the Doctor now. "You're part of this rebellion you just mentioned, aren't you?" The man nodded at him. "And you want me to help you overthrow the government?" Once again he nodded. "What's your name?"

"Elijah." He replied, his face still filled with hope. It was clear that he was in desperate need of the Doctor's help. "If you agree, then I will get you out of here."

The Doctor knew that he would have to agree. He needed to get out of there and find Kari. Of course, he wanted to find out what was going on as well and help the people, but he desperately wanted to find his Kari. "I'll help you."

The man, Elijah, smiled at him. "The people have been waiting a long time for you both to return. It seems like their prayers have finally been answered." He said, before stopping in his tracks. He looked around him, checking that the coast was clear, and then unlocked the door that was to the side of them. The Doctor hadn't even noticed that the door was there. "We have to move quickly. Once she finds out you have gone, there really will be hell to pay."

"Then you should probably lead the way." The Doctor did not want to find out how bad Cora was going to react to seeing him no longer in his cell. He already knew that she had a temper, he just hoped that no one would be suffering because of his escape.

After following Elijah in silence, they finally made it out into the cool, crisp evening air. The second sun was close to setting, she would soon notice his absence. The pair continued to walk in silence, the Doctor constantly looking around, checking that they hadn't been spotted, that they were not being followed. Elijah seemed less concerned, he was just walking with a purpose towards a white van that was waiting.

They both bundled into the back of the van, Elijah closing the doors behind them. Moments later they were moving. "Cora has people guarding your box. She will be expecting you to go there, but we have people watching it as well." Elijah said, trying to break the uncomfortable silence. "We're going to the edge of the city, it will be safer there."

While the Doctor was listening to him, his mind was elsewhere. He closed his eyes and tried to find Kari, to catch any sense of her at all in his head. There was something there, but it was very faint. "She's too far away." He muttered to himself, attempting to grab a hold of a thread in his head, one that he hoped was linked to Kari. "I can't reach her."

Elijah sat there looking confused. "Reach who?" He asked, not understanding what was going on or what he was talking about.

The Doctor opened his eyes and looked at the man. "Kari. I can't find her, she could be anywhere in the whole of time and space." There was such sadness and worry in his voice as he spoke. He knew he had done the right thing but he also wished that he hadn't done it as well.

"What do you mean? She isn't here with you?" There was a hint of panic in his eyes as he spoke. He knew the stories of the Doctor and his Angel, he never went anywhere without her. So hearing him say this made him think that something was terribly wrong.

"The TARDIS landed, we took a look outside and I realised where we were. Before I had a chance to get us out of there we were being attacked." The Doctor informed him, letting out a sigh. "I had to get her away from here, somewhere safe. I had no idea what was waiting for us outside, I was not going to risk it."

Elijah's face fell as he remembered what had happened last time and realised why he didn't want Karit here. "Because of what they did to her last time. You didn't want that to happen again."

All the Doctor could do was nod at him in response. He remembered what happened clearly, and it hurt him terribly. What made it all the more terrible was that the Kari that had been with him hadn't been through all of that yet. She still had it all to come, and all the Doctor wished for was that he could stop it.

"So you have no idea where she is at all?" He asked, hoping that the Doctor was going to be able to save them once more even without Kari there.

"No. I used the TARDIS to send her somewhere, somewhere she would be safe. Hopefully she has sent her back to Earth and her brother. Jack will always keep her safe." While that was what the Doctor was hoping, it most certainly was not what had happened.

Kari was struggling to open her eyes. Her head was pounding and she was starting to feel a little sick as well. Her memories were all fuzzy and she wasn't entirely sure where she was or what had happened. Instead she let out a slight groan as she tried to pull herself together.

Suddenly she heard the sound of light footsteps rushing towards her. "Kari? Kari, can you hear me?" A soft, female voice said to her. "You're okay, you just had a nasty bump to the head."

With some effort, Kari managed to get her eyes to open and found a figure to be standing next to where she was laying. "Where am I now?" She asked, trying to gather herself together. Everything seemed to be scattered in her head, she already knew that something wasn't right but Kari had no idea what it was.

"Bruno found you out in the forest. He was keeping an eye on you, making sure you were okay. You spotted him and made a run for it. In the end you tripped over something and hit your head. You've been out cold for a few hours." The woman told her gently.

After a few more blinks, Kari finally managed to clear her vision and look at the person who was speaking to her. She had dark hair which was pulled tightly into a bun on the top of her head and her skin was very pale. "Great. So just two more questions." Kari said, pulling herself up. "Where am I and who are you?" She asked, finally starting to feel a little more herself.

While the woman looked at her with a blank expression, Kari took her chance to observe her surroundings. She was in a house with very little furniture, just a table and some chairs in the room she was currently in, along with the sofa she was still on. "You must have hit your head much harder than we thought." The woman muttered. It was easy to see she was keeping a blank expression on her face to hide the concern.

"What makes you say that?" Kari was curious, of course she was. There was something that was telling her that something wasn't right, that there was something that she was missing, she just didn't know what it was.

"Because you don't know who I am." There seemed to be a little hurt in the woman's voice as she spoke. "You seem to have lost your memory as well."

All Kari could do was look at her in confusion. "I'm pretty sure I haven't lost my memory. I've never met you before, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to." She said, trying to rack her brains to see if she had any recollection of her.

"She hasn't lost her memory." A male voice suddenly called as a man walked into the room. "She just hasn't met us yet." He said, coming and standing beside the woman. "I'm Bruno, this is Elsa. You're in a basic home building in Cardiff on Terra Earth."

Something suddenly clicked for Kari. Terra Earth, that was where she was with the Doctor… "We were attacked…" She ended up whispering, remembering what had happened before she was stuck in the forest. "The Doctor was desperate to get us out of there. He was so worried. Then someone attacked the TARDIS. He knocked me out, sent me away." Kari reached into her pockets and tried to find something. Panic flashed across her face as she reached deeper and deeper but couldn't find the long tube she was searching for.

As her panic built, Bruno held something out towards her. "Is this what you're looking for?" He was holding onto the Doctor's screwdriver, the one that she was desperately looking for. Kari quickly took it from him and held onto it tightly. "We are not going to hurt you, Kari. You can trust us. You and the Doctor came here before, to Terra Earth. You helped us with some… problems we were having."

"What problems?" Kari was feeling a mix of emotions now. Of course it was possible that she had been there before with the Doctor, and that she had met these people before. But she had the feeling she didn't have such a good time there.

"Spoilers." Bruno replied, giving her a small smile. "I believe that is the word that you constantly use." Kari let out a sigh. "Look, I think there are some things that you need to know." He said, grabbing two chairs and offering one to Elsa. "A few hours ago there was an announcement. The government has caught the Doctor and he was to be executed at the second sunet." Kari quickly got up and looked out of the window. It was long past the second sunset now.

A lump formed in her throat as she closed her eyes, thinking about the Doctor, trying to find him, to sense him, anything to let her know that he was still alive. "Come on, Doctor, where are you?" She whispered as she searched through her mind. Then she saw it, so far away, but just as bright as always, a golden thread. She tried to reach for it, to pull it closer towards her, but it was just too far. The only comfort she had was knowing that he was there, he was not dead. "Don't do anything stupid, Doctor."

Someone touched her lightly on the shoulder and she turned to see Bruno standing there with something in his hand. "I was asked to give this to you." He said, handing her a sealed envelope. Kari frowned as she took it from him and looked at her name scrawled on it. She already knew who it was from. "I'll go make some tea." Bruno added, before dragging Elsa out of the room with him.

With a sigh, Kari carefully tore open the top of the envelope and pulled out a letter. 'Trust them. What has already happened to them has not happened to you yet.' The start of the letter said. 'The last time we were here things really were not good. You asked me on the phone if it was invasion bad or Trickster bad. What is happening for you now is nothing compared to what will happen. I'm sorry, but you have to be prepared. Right now the Doctor is out there, you know that he is alive, but he is worrying about you. His plan was to get you off the planet, he thinks that you are back with Jack, he has no idea that you are still on Terra Earth.' Panic was rising in her, there was so much wrong with this letter, with what she was telling herself. Why was she telling her so much when on the phone she would tell her nothing? What happened when the Doctor had been there with her last? What was to come in her future? 'I know you are starting to panic, but you need to know. There is something in the darkness and we are the only ones who can stop it. Be strong and be brave. We will get through this, I promise.'

Minutes went by and she stood there at the window still, gazing at the letter. Kari had been worried before, but now she was down right terrified of what was going on. If she was telling herself things that she shouldn't, then things really were going to be awful in the future. It hadn't made things any better for her, if anything it had just made it worse. "We should have just stayed in bed." Kari finally said, just as Bruno and Elsa walked back into the room, one carrying a tray with mugs of tea on it and the other a tray with biscuits on.

"How are you feeling?" Else asked her, setting down the tray that she was carrying on the small table.

Kari walked back over from the window and sat down on the sofa. "I've been better." She told her, tucking the letter away in her pocket. "The day hasn't exactly gone how I had hoped it would and I have a feeling that things are just going to get worse from here." After reading that letter from herself, she knew that things were going to get worse before they got any better.

Bruno poured out the tea and the trio sat there in a comfortable silence while they drank. Kari was just thinking over the contents of the letter, and trying not to panic about what was going to happen in the future. Elsa was watching Kari with a frown on her face while Bruno was the only one that seemed to be relaxed.

When Kari had finished her tea, she decided it was time to get some more answers. "Why were you following me?" She asked, looking at Bruno.

The man put his mug down on the tray and looked at her. "I wasn't sure it was you at first. There are always people watching the forest, keeping an eye on things, making sure that… well, that it is safe. Today it was reported that a blue box was there. Not everyone knows the significance of that box, but we do. We knew that meant that you and the Doctor were here. So I watched and I waited. I saw the Doctor being led away from the box and then I waited some more, hoping that you would come out. Hours passed and there was no sign of you." He explained, being very careful with his words. He understood that this was a different Kari and was careful not to mention things about her future. "As I was heading back through the forest I heard something, I followed it. It was you. I kept my distance because I could see you were nervous and scared."

"Where did they take him?" Kari hoped that wherever they had taken the Doctor, he would still be there, and she could go to him and they could get out of there.

"The Tower." Bruno replied, watching as Kari stood up. "He isn't there now." He called, causing her to stop and look at him. "There has been no update on his execution. From what I've heard, he is with the Rebellion."

Now Kari was frowning at him. "What? Rebellion? What is going on here?" She was starting to get rather frustrated. For every answer she received, several more questions arose.

This time it was Elsa who answered her. "The Rebellion is going to overthrow the government. They want to take the planet back from those in charge, from those who have been destroying it and have become power mad. The last time you were here with the Doctor you opened people's eyes."

"And are you part of this Rebellion?" Kari asked. It was still just throwing up more questions that she wanted to ask.

"No." Bruno said quickly. "We are neutral. We do not get involved in any of the politics. We live our lives and keep to ourselves."

Kari could accept that, some people just wanted a quiet life and to be left alone. She knew many people that would just sit in the corner and ignore everything that was going on around them. They just wanted to live peacefully and ignore the rest of the world. She understood that. But there was something that was still bothering her, the big question that had been burning in her mind since she read that letter. "What's in the darkness?"

There was a smash and Kari's eyes quickly shifted to Elsa who had dropped her mug. The fear and panic was evident in her eyes as she looked anywhere but at Kari. "I better clean that up." she muttered, before rushing out of the room.

With her gone, Kari gazed at Bruno, locking eyes with him, waiting for him to answer her. She was not going to stop until she had her answers and it seemed as if he sensed this as he let out a sigh. "Of course, you would know about that wouldn't you?" He said, rubbing his forehead a little. "No one goes out after dark anymore. Only fools do and they soon learn to regret it." Bruno looked at Kari, hoping that was enough to satisfy her. He was wrong, she was waiting for more. "There are these… creatures I suppose. It only happens when it is dark, and it only happens to the people who are outside."

"What happens?" Kari asked, desperate to know more.

"Bad things happen. They see things, hear things. A friend of mine, he… he was out one night a few weeks ago. He was running late but wasn't too far from home. He thought it would be fine, that he would be safe. He had just turned into his street when it happened. He swears that he saw his sister who died when she was seven. This image of her followed him home, calling to him, telling him she was dead because of him." Bruno explained, finding it difficult to talk about his friend. "A few days later, he was… he…"

She knew perfectly well what he was trying to say and that was not anything like Kari was expecting, and it was actually terrifying her. "I'm sorry, I…" She didn't really know what to say to him.

Bruno simply gave her a small nod. "We call them Night Terrors. Whatever it is, whatever is out there, it feeds on your terrors, your fears. My friend, he saw his sister die, he tried to save her but couldn't. She drowned, and he could never go near water after that."

Kari had listened to what he had said, but it still didn't make sense. "And… When did all this start? I mean, has it always been like this? Have those Night Terrors always been there?" There was something about it all that was bothering her, she just couldn't put her finger on it.

He shook his head at her. "No, not always. It's only been more recently."

It was a lot for her to take in, for her to understand, but Kari knew that she had to help them somehow. It's what the Doctor would do. "Okay, so while the Doctor deals with the government and this Rebellion, we are going to deal with these Night Terrors." She announced, taking him by complete surprise. "I know what it's like to have your head played with, your fears and worries shown to you. Someone once tried to destroy me by making me believe things that were simply not true. Truth be told, it's happened more than once, I know how awful it is."

Bruno didn't really know what to say. He hadn't expected her to offer up her help for these Terrors. He knew that she had enough to deal with already. "You know you really don't have to. We believe it to be the governments doing, to keep us scared and under their control. Once the Rebellion has taken control the people hope to find the solution then."

Kari got up and walked back over to the window. The sky was getting darker but the street lamps were burning brightly. Everything out there looked calm and normal, but she could actually feel something. She could feel some kind of energy out there, something familiar but also strange. "I need to go out there." Kari ended up muttering.

"You can't. It's too dangerous." Bruno told her, a worried look on his face. "Just… let's wait until morning. We should talk about what to do first." He did not like the idea of her going out there, he didn't like it at all.

"I have to. The Doctor is out there somewhere, I need to get to him. If you think this is all caused by the government then fine, okay. But I don't think it is." The longer Kari looked, the stranger things out there became. She could see tiny golden wisps just floating in the air. "Tell me what you see when you look outside." It was freaking her out a little, and she didn't know if it was just her, or if everyone could see them.

Bruno came over to the window and stood beside her. "I just see the world outside." She said with a shrug. "The lamps, the houses, the sky. Just… what you'd normally see."

That was not what she had wanted to hear. "And nothing else? You can't see anything in the air? Nothing?" She was desperate for him to see something, to see what she was seeing. He looked for a few more moments before shaking his head at her. "There is definitely something else out there. I can see it." It was going to bother her now, that she could see something that no one else was seeing. That was the kind of thing that always happened and she was getting a little fed up with it. "I'm going out there."

Kari turned and headed towards the door, determination on her face, only to be stopped by Elsa. "You can't go out there, Kari. you can't." The desperation and panic was in his eyes and her voice as she spoke. "They'll come for you if you do. You can't go out there."

"Who will come for me? The Night Terrors? Let them, I need to see them if I want to find out what they really are." The only way to work it out was to have an actual encounter with them, and that wasn't going to happen if she was stuck inside.

But Elsa shook her head. "No, the government. They've been searching for you since they took away the Doctor. The President is convinced that you are here, she has soldiers out looking for you. There are cameras everywhere. If you go outside then she will see you and take you." She didn't want her going out there, that much was clear, and Kari could understand why.

Unfortunately, when Kari had her mind set on something, that was it. "I'm sorry, I have to." She told her softly. "The Doctor is out there, I can't even reach him, he could be hurt for all I know. I have to go, I have to make sure he is okay."

"Let me contact the Rebellion first." Bruno suddenly called, coming out into the hallway where Kari and Elsa were. "Let me get in contact with them and see if I can find out about the Doctor. See if they have him and check if he is safe."

While reluctant to do so, Kari agreed. She desperately needed to know where the Doctor was, to know that he was safe. While Kari knew that he was alive, that was about all she did know. She was doing her best to keep herself calm and in control, but she was feeling so nervous and unsettled below the surface, if she didn't find the Doctor soon then she knew things would get a lot worse. He was the only one who could calm her, get her to see reason at times. She needed him.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

"Welcome to the Rebellion." Elijah announced as they entered a normal looking house. It wasn't a large house, but there were quite a few people wandering around in there. "We are spread out across houses like this all over the place, most people will move from one house to the next, spreading news and gathering information."

The Doctor looked around as they stepped into one of the rooms of the house. It was less crowded and rather sparsely furnished. "Great, so what is the grand plan for the Rebellion?" He asked, wondering if they even had one. The Doctor was doing his best to focus on where he was and the help that he promised to give, but his mind kept wandering back to Kari. He didn't know if she was safe, and he found it difficult to focus on anything else because of that.

Elijah sat down on the worn leather sofa, indication for the Doctor to join him. "When you were last here, you helped up. You stopped what President Cora was doing, to save us and all those other people. And, for a while, things were great. The government backed off, let us all start to live a little, gave us some freedom. It wasn't perfect, but it was something. More than what we had before." The man explained, the Doctor listening patiently. "But then things started to change. Strange things were happening at night. People telling stories of seeing and hearing things, things that frightened them."

Now the Doctor was listening more intently. "What things?" He asked, his curiosity starting to shine through.

"We… we don't really know. They've come to be known as Night Terrors. They only seem to appear at night. Although they don't actually appear, no one has ever actually seen whatever they are, just… the things that they do see." Elijah was obviously struggling and the Doctor wasn't sure why. "Whatever these things are, they play on your fears. They mean to scare you."

The Doctor got up from where he was sitting and bounced over to the window, looking outside, wondering if there really was anything out there. He stared for a few minutes and saw nothing but darkness. "There's nothing there, there isn't…" Then he saw it. The tiny golden wisps, the same ones that Kari had seen when she looked outside into the night. "Oh… oh no… that's…" He knew exactly what he was looking at and his face fell in an instant. "I need to find Kari."

A/N: I just want to say a big thank you to all of you who have taken the time to review. I know I say this every time but I really do appreciate the comments, both the ones that are full of happiness and even those with criticism and the occasional hate. We are all entitled to our own opinion.

I know from the reviews on the last chapter that people are curious as to what happened last time they were there. You'll find out eventually, but you will have to wait. There are so many other things that are going to be happening for the Doctor and Kari in the future, so many plans brewing in my brain, it's hard to keep it all straight.

Anyway, instead of rambling on, I will now go and carry on writing. So until the next time!

Pippa.
