XXII.

Walphurghis Nacht is an impossible fight. They don't work well together, few of them even like each other, and the monster is just powerful.

But Madoka still fights anyway. They all still fight anyway.

Homura tries. She tries.

But she's so tired. There's no way she can win. She can barely use magic. She can barely get the grief taken away. There's no point. Either they all win and they die, they all lose and Madoka sacrifices herself, or they all lose and everyone dies.

Why does Walphurghis Nacht do all of this? What is it for? What does it get? Do witches - magical women - feel the need to destroy everything? She does. She feels the desire more and more, the power and urge to fight and fight and destroy and destroy until there's nothing left not even dust.

She doesn't want to understand. She doesn't want the enemy to be human. It's easier to be a monster. It's easier for them, better for them, to all be monsters.

She just… can't stand the idea of Madoka being a monster.
