By the time I made it to UA, wheezing and sweating, Hawks was already perched on the top of the wall. He was crouched at a safe distance from the kid, with a disarming and friendly smile. I stood ready in case Moe decided to jump; he wasn't the most trusting kid.
"Hey," Hawks said easily, "I gotta ask, how'd you get all the way up here?"
No answer. Unsurprising.
"What's your name?" Hawks didn't seem perturbed in the least by the silence or the height, "I'm Hawks, your sister sent me." A small gasp told me he'd gotten Moe's attention.
"…Moe." He said very quietly.
"Alright! Nice to meet ya, Moe! Personally, I like the view up here, but your sister's been pretty worried. Why don't we show her that you're alright? Okay?" I watched Hawks reach his hand out.
"Okay." Moe agreed quietly, wobbling to his feet.
As he stood, though, saw me and jumped.
"Moe!" I cried in frustration as I held my arms out and caught him like a football. The force knocked me back and I fell on my bum, holding him securely. The rest of my scolding melted away as he hugged me tightly. I pulled him closer and rested my chin on his head. "...I've got you."
Hawks had a blank look for a moment, then let out a loud chortle. He hopped off effortlessly, shook his head with a smile, and extended his wings.
I realized what was happening only once his feet had already left the ground.
Pitching forward, I jumped and caught his hand before he could leave. He turned to me. Right then, I actually saw his eyes through his visor. He was startled, looking at me like I'd said something outrageous.
"Thank you." I let my hand slip from his when I realized how awkward it was for me to be holding hands with a big shot hero, "I owe you one, seriously. If there's ever anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask."
"Ah, don't worry about it!" He ruffled Moe's hair and then his eyes softened when he looked back at me, "I wish I had a sister like you when I was his age." With that, and a gust of wind, he was off.
Wordlessly, I carried Moe to the hotel I'd booked us for the night. We checked in, showered, sat on the bed.
Finally, I let out a loud sigh and fell back onto the pillows.
"Jiminey Cricket, you scared the living daylights out of me." I said. He laid down beside me, little hand on my arm. "Alright, how about this? I have a harrowing tale of epic proportions to tell you, but I want to hear your side first. What on earth happened?"
Moe sat and pulled his knees into his chest.
"Everyone fell asleep."
"Right, the villain." I said, "But you weren't there when I woke up." He fidgeted.
"I covered my ears." I had never considered that he'd somehow stayed awake. My amazement must have shown, so I said,
"Oh wow. How do I keep forgetting you're a little genius? So that worked?"
"Kind of." I could see his little toes wiggling inside his socks, "Only a little. So I…" He seemed upset. He suddenly hugged me tightly, cutting the circulation to my arm. "I'm sorry." He whispered.
"What do you mean? Hey, hey, breathe. We don't have to talk about this tonight."
"I thought you were right behind me." He said into my sleeve, hiding his face and waiting for my answer. "When I ran."
"Oh sweetie." I pried him off me so I could look at his face. He seemed close to tears, which was rare for him, "So you could still kind of hear the music, and tried to get far away?" He nodded, "That's brilliant, Moe. I wasn't hurt at all, so you have nothing to worry about. You were just being clever. So what happened when you ran?"
"I got lost."
"Of course, the city is huge."
"But I found UA."
"So did I! Ah, spoilers for my story. Keep going." He didn't, seemingly all talked out. I flattened his damp hair. "So did you find your spot and wait to see me?" He nodded. "I thought I was so good at guessing your spots. Sorry, buddy. I was close though."
"Your turn." He murmured.
"Okay, but we have to lay down."
In no time, I was spinning the epic tale, gesturing widely toward the ceiling.
"So I try to sneak back in the auditorium, since I've conned my way inside as a prospective student, when all of a sudden…" I lower my voice so it's gruff and tired, "Where do you think you're going?" Moe's eyes looked like they would pop out of their sockets. I laughed, "So I was sure I was toast, and this man, who really needs a nap if you ask me, he just glares and whatever excuse I tried was useless because he, I kid you not, up and drags me to the classroom!" I imitate being pulled by my scarf. "So what was I supposed to do? I'm pretty sure he'd drag me back if I attempted escape, so I had to take the entrance exam!" We giggled a bit, but before I could continue, Moe looked at me intensely,
"Was it hard?"
"A little! But it wasn't too bad, since I wasn't stressed about getting a good grade. I thought my act would end there, but oh no!"
"No?"
"Nope! I realized I wouldn't be able to snoop like I expected and I still hadn't found you, so I was going to call the whole charade quits when…" I paused dramatically, "The practical portion." I described the city and big dangerous robots in detail. "Well I certainly didn't want to go in there, but how were you supposed to know this model city was a battle ground? So in I went to ensure you were far from that place!" I gave an apologetic grimace, "Of course, to avoid getting beat up, which I learned the hard way," I showed him my scrapes, "I had to use my quirk. I felt silly once I realized you weren't there and you know what happens when I overdo it. So I was out of commission for a while. Sorry, buddy."
"Don't apologize." He said quietly. I ruffled his hair.
"Okay, okay. Well once I came to, I was told that the police and local heroes would all be busy today, what with the villain attack. We really witnessed a big deal this morning! So I find the teachers lounge, because a kid I met told me that all the teachers are heroes too, and when I get there…" I met Moe's eyes, "All Might himself is standing with his back to me. Along with two other heroes. Endeavor and Hawks."
Moe sat up, jaw hanging open. I grinned.
"That's right! They are so so so tall! Well I explain the situation and Hawks jumps out the window! We searched until he found you!" I pulled him back onto the pillows, sighing, "And now you're safe and sound."
"…I'm sorry."
"Hey!" I said, outraged, "None of that! I'm the one who should be sorry for not finding you sooner! But we agreed, no apologizing right?" He nodded, "Anyway, I met a bunch of heroes, saw the city, got the workout of a lifetime, and even took a hero test. Then we ended with a happy reunion. Don't you think the kids back home will love to hear this story?" He nodded.
We laid in silence for a few minutes. I was sure he was asleep when he whispered,
"Was it cool? UA?" I remembered the purpose of our trip.
"The coolest. Tell you what, if you promise to never let go of my hand, I'll show it to you tomorrow. Deal?"
"…deal."
.
Even I forget at times how cunning Moe can be. I was perfectly aware of how easily I crumbled under the rare occurrence of a request from him, and I knew that he could slip away easily if he really wanted to. He wasn't as afraid of others as it may have seemed; mistrustful certainly, but Moe had a knack for dealing with danger. The villain attack had showed as much; while all of us stood and let ourselves be attacked, Moe reacted instantly and escaped. There was a reason the other kids were frightened of him.
But even I never considered he'd execute a plan weeks in the making.
