Baby of The Batch

Hello, everyone. This prompt was suggested by CT-9906. Enjoy.

As cadets, Crosshair was used to being the baby of the batch. He was the youngest and whenever he wanted something, his brothers were there to give it to him.

Crosshair and Hunter were always close as they were the eldest and youngest of the batch. Hunter always protected and helped his youngest brother and Crosshair was a second in command to Hunter. That changed when Echo joined, but just barely.

When Crosshair was with the Empire, Omega filled the void that Crosshair left. Hunter and Omega grew very close and everyone had time to help Omega grow and learn. When Crosshair came back to the batch, he thought he could turn to his brothers at any point in time and they would be willing and able to help. Sadly, that wasn't the case. Instead, they were all focused on Omega. Crosshair tried not to let his jealousy show, but with each day, it grew harder and harder.

One day, Crosshair heard Hunter and Omega talking and he heard Hunter chuckle at something Omega said. Crosshair let a scoff slip as he sat down beside Wrecker and Echo.

"Why's he always so busy for her?" Crosshair sneered."It's not like she's the only one around here."

"No, but she isn't like the rest of us. She wasn't raised to be a soldier. She doesn't have any experience outside of Kamino." Echo replied.

"Why do we even keep her? It's not like she helps us any."

"Hey, you take that back. Omega's been a big help. Besides, she's our sister. You're just jealous that you're not getting the attention you want." Wrecker stated.

"Who'd be jealous of her?" Crosshair scoffed.

"You would. You were jealous of the regs. You just didn't want to admit it." Echo replied.

"How would you know?"

"Because I know you and so does Hunter. Between the two of you, I've been able to figure out quite a lot."

"Like what?"

"You claim to want to be alone, but really, you want to be a part. You just don't want to feel vulnerable. You don't like Omega because one look and she makes you feel vulnerable and she's only a child. You hate yourself because she knows how to make your walls fall and stay fallen. You want to hate her, but then you hate yourself for thinking that way. You crave a time when you didn't have to face the truth. When you didn't have to face your vulnerability, she makes you feel free which is something you're not used to. She makes you feel able to breathe which you can't stand because you've never had that chance. You hate that someone so young and naive can make a hardened soldier crumble in a second." Echo ranted. When Echo was done, Wrecker bumped him and Echo saw that Crosshair was looking at Omega.

"She shouldn't have to understand our lives." Crosshair murmured.

"You want the innocence she has." Echo realized.

"Don't we all? She doesn't know."

"But she does. We just don't want to accept it." Wrecker sighed.

Crosshair sighed and shook his head. In that moment, he knew his brothers were right. In a way, Crosshair was jealous of Omega's heart. He was jealous of her innocence and her compassion. He was jealous that his time of innocence had long passed.
