The owner of the New Year Wrestling League wasn't thrilled about having to be called in by the New York Police Department again to answer questions; they had already completed the investigation of some low level crook that had robbed one of his promoters and had been caught by the Spider guy who answered the open challenge to amateurs and normal people, let the crook escape and only caught him when he killed some guy whose house he tried to burgle.
He was asked if he knew about Spider-Man having become sort of costumed vigilante and he scoffed, "Off course I know. Now that I know that the guy had freaky powers I want to see about getting a lawsuit with this guy after you catch him in order for him to pay back the cash prize with interest! I am sure there is some sort of law disqualifying him since he was probably a Mutant or something." The NYWL owner said and the police interrogator looked at his notes.
"We are launching an investigation to catch this Spider-Man and we want your full cooperation in trying to track him down." The interrogator told him and the NYWL owner smirked thinking that Spider-Man will pay not only for defrauding him but embarrassing his Champion Crusher Hogan on live TV. "Now I need you to give over all paperwork you have related to him. So far we only have the signup sheet with Spider-Man listed." The interrogator said and the owner blinked confused.
"That is it, the guy didn't leave any other details nor did he sign anything else." The owner said and the interrogator raised an eyebrow. "Is there a problem?" the owner asked unsure what the problem is.
"Can you clarify that he didn't sign any documents with his real name? Did you see him unmasked? Did he have ID?" the interrogator asked the owner shook his head. "So you are saying that you let a stranger enter your professional wrestling competition without ID or a legal signature. You do realise that means that you are liable for injuries those signing up may have experienced in the ring and if the other amateur wrestlers only signed with their wrestling ring then that means that any waiver form that they may have signed are not official." The interrogator informed him and the owner grew annoyed.
"So what if I didn't waste time getting stuff like legal signatures or stuff like that but the ones manning the desk for sign ups had the suckers give verbal consent and acknowledged the risks involved!" the owner snapped and the interrogated was ready to face palm, he knew that idiots could be in charge of companies these days but this was really pushing it. How exactly did NYWL survive if this idiot was running things?
"Do you have any video footage of said verbal consent?" the interrogator asked and the owner shook his head. "I thank you for your own verbal confession there as it will help in this new investigation that we will have to start now." The interrogator said pointing to the recording device.
If the NYWL owner had thought of calling his lawyer over for this meeting then he would have been advised to keep his mouth shut soon after the meeting had started.
Weeks later there was a big news story about the NYWL postponing all operations thanks to an investigation and large class action lawsuit representing just about everyone who signed up and it shed light on some unknown to the public illicit dealings including forgoing promised health insurance for the wrestling and unsafe working conditions. The NYWL owner was facing prison time and the fine against him and the company was so big that once he was out of prison he was a night janitor at a Burger Frog trying to pay back the remainder of what he owed. The stock holders of the NYWL had the company sold at under a fourth of what the company was stated to be worth before the scandal.
Off course the Daily Bugle blamed most of the scandal on Spider-Man.
This could have been the first chapter here and on the Fanfiction Enter the Spider's Web forum that I had visited regularly years ago I had pointed out how it is pretty much nigh impossible to modernise the wrestling part of the origin since it would need things like ID and Peter would be starting out as a teen then. The founder of the forum brought up as it could be easily changed to underground fighting so there is that. Some inspiration from how it went down in the first Sam Raimi movie.
