CHAPTER 29
Link suddenly looks up and sees his friends have disappeared, so has the forest they were in. He is now all alone in a dark empty void. Around him are random floating items that he cannot identify. Suddenly a small blue fairy floats in front of him with a large smile on her face.
"Link!" It says in a high pitched voice "You are almost the first one to ever be able to receive the power of the Mask of Inversion! All you have to do is-"
However the blue fairy is knocked away by a pair of large hands that grab her and throw her into the abyss. Link raises an eyebrow as he watches the blue fairy disappear into the void, he quickly turns to see a large humanoid creature towering above him. It begins playing a drum beat on the ground below his feet, these rhythms are familiar to Link. The being that is playing the ground like a drum is none other than an old foe he thought he'd never see again after dispatching it once before, it is the Phantom Shadow Beast "Bongo Bongo".
Link quickly gets his sword ready, preparing to fight. He swings his sword and the phantom's body splits apart as it was nothing more than an illusion.
"So you believe you are worthy of the Mask of Inversion" several voices speak out at once from the Void. "Well if you believe yourself worthy, survive these battles unlike that Princess who came before you."
Link looks around and sees various strange creatures are surrounding him. They all look very similar, yet each one is unique in some way. They are the guardians of the Temples he once fought, except their colors have been inverted. They all fade back into the void, before the Inverted Odolwa jumps back in front of Link.
The Inverted Odolwa is now a purple creature with a large protruding tongue.
"Are you sure about this?" The Inverted Odolwa asks. "Rather than poisoning the world around you, I have ingested it myself! In this Inverted World, I have become the strongest member of my tribe! Let's dance!"
Odolwa starts by swinging at Link, however he ducks and dodges, blocking the attacks with his sword. Odolwa laughs, charging forward. Link blocks a few more swipes of the evil creature's claws and dodges a spin attack. Link pulls out his Bow and fires at Odolwa, hitting him right in the center of his head. The tribal is knocked backwards.
Odolwa stands up again and looks at Link, its tongue hanging out of its mouth. "Not bad, I have much more where that came from though." He pulls a large shield which he uses to protect him.
As Odolwa prepares for another attack, Link fires off another arrow at Odolwa. This time the arrow hits him in the shoulder, causing him to fall down. However Odolwa immediately stands back up, unaffected by the arrow. "These useless arrows have no effect on me!" Odolwa declares. "Fire Ring!" He summons a circle of flame to surround Link.
Link quickly dodges the flames, then lunges at Odolwa's stomach while dodging another circle of fire. Link stabs his sword into Odolwa's side, but the monster is not affected by the wound. "Keep striking! It won't do you any good!" He summons several killer moths, "Insects! Dissect this warrior!"
Link tries to dodge, but he's too late and the moths fly right into his arm. They begin to pull on his arm and the pain makes him lose focus. With all his might, Link swings his sword at the moth, severing its wing. Link pulls out a Bomb and throws it to Odolwa, the moths follow the bomb. The explosion knocks Odolwa over, knocking him unconscious as his Moths begin to devour his body.
When they have finished with their meal, they fly off into the void.
"How dare you attempt to defeat me?" a deep voice echoes throughout the area. "You pathetic fool, have you even begun to grasp the power you possess? You are the one who defeated the Great Destroyer, and yet you still believe you need assistance to defeat him again?!"
Charging from the Void is the masked mechanical monster "Goht", he is wearing a golden helmet with a glowing red eye in the center and a large silver tank on his back. Goht opens his mouth showing off his sharp fangs as he charges at Link. Link dodges then shoots a bomb arrow at Goht's wheels. The wheel explodes, sending Goht flying backwards back into the void he came from.
"Well done!" the voice from the Void continues "You may have just gained a little bit of respect in my eyes!"
Link looks back and sees a purple figure rising from the Void. The figure turns to reveal it is the gargantuan masked fish "Gyorg".
"None have reached this far into our Inversion Test" it telepaths to Link. "Consider it an honor before you succumb to the mask's effects."
Gyorg launches itself towards Link, its spear-like nose aimed directly towards him! Gyorg's massive tail slaps Link in the face, sending him flying.
After regaining himself, Link finds himself surrounded by Inverted versions of the Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Shyguys. The Shy Guys are all wearing the Mask of Majora.
"All hail the Moon of Majora" they chant. "The planet will be made into a wasteland and we shall claim what is left!"
Link fires off a bow shot, but the Shy Guy dodges it, firing a fireball at Link's head. The fireball hits, and Link is sent flying back. "Surrender to the masks effects Link!" Gyorg telepaths. "It is easier to give in than to struggle". It rises out of the Void to launch itself at Link again.
The Earth shakes and cracks open. A huge being appears from the ground, swallowing Gyorg whole. Then the land begins to shake violently, it seems every single inhabitant of the Inverted World is making their way to Link. "Give in to the mask! Give in to the mask!" They all chant in unison. As they run after Link, Link sees they are being devoured one by one by a giant wormlike insect. It is Twinmold. It chomps down on one of the Shy Guys and swallows him whole. Another Shy Guy runs into Link, he grabs him and tries to throw him off balance. Link drops his bow and draws his sword, slashing wildly at Twinmold. None of his slashes make a scratch on Twinmold's exoskeleton body.
Twinmold leaps at Link, the Shy Guy he had grabbed earlier flying into him and knocking him off his feet. Twinmold tries to swallow Link, but he manages to get his sword free enough to stab Twinmold's eye. Half of Twinmold explodes!
Another Shy Guy runs up to Link and tries to hit him with a shell. Link blocks the shell with his sword and quickly slices off the Shy Guy's mask in half. Twinmold slamsLink onto the ground with its tail. Twinmold then rams his horn into the ground. Link gets up and grabs a bomb, throwing it at Twinmolds tail. Blowing the other half of Twinmold to smithereens! The remaining Shy Guys surround Link, running their fingers through his hair.
"You are worthy! You are worthy!" they chant.
Link drops his sword and holds his hands out, the Shy Guys begin to rub a powdery substance into his palms.
"Oh Great Aajmor! Let this hero take hold of your glorious power!"
Finally the Mask of Inversion reveals itself and allows Link to put it on.
Finally Link opens his eyes back in reality.
