Hiccup and Marcario were on patrol keeping an eye out in case they spotted Grimmel. So naturally, they caught the attention of several civilians.
"Hey, look heroes!" said a girl pointing at the two of them.
"That guy from the Berk Thawfest Festival," said her friend.
"I'm not sure if I'll ever get used to this," said Hiccup.
"What gives you went out on patrol during your internship, didn't you?" said Marcario. "Though I guess I can't blame you for being a little shaky after what went down."
Hiccup shrugged. "It's just that my class seems to be the centre of attention, I mean we've seen more action than any other class in history."
"True, during my first year I encountered nowhere near the number of villains you guys did," Marcario nodded. "But you have no need to worry, Sir and Bubble Girl are the ones looking out for the target. We're just doing a routine patrol and Detroit is relatively quiet thanks to our agency."
Hiccup frowned. 'I remember seeing Nighteye and my dad together when I was a kid, but I never understood why they broke up. Something big must have gone down in those two aren't on speaking terms any more.'
"Oh, I forgot," said Marcario. "We never told each other about our hero names, we should be using those were more on duty."
Hiccup snapped out of his thoughts and looked at him. "Yeah, you're right. The name is Night Fury."
"Whoa, cool name," said Marcario giving him the thumbs up. "Well, I'm Lemillion for the number of people I'll save. You know, can't save them all but I can at least ship for saving a million instead, so that's what I'm doing. When we start putting on costumes and hitting the streets, that when we become heroes. So don't let your guard down, Night Fury."
"Got it, Lemillion."
With that, they continued on their patrol routes.
Then suddenly a little girl ran out of an alleyway and slammed into Hiccup and fell onto the ground.
"Whoa, I'm sorry," said Hiccup as he bent down towards her and reached out towards her. "You took a tumble."
The moment he reached out his hand, she immediately quivered and backed away.
"You okay, can I help you?" Hiccup asked as he placed his hands around her waist.
As he did so, he noticed that her arms and legs were bandaged, she was barefoot and was only wearing a hospital gown. He wondered if she had run away from a nearby hospital, she had silver-grey hair, but the thing that caught his eye was the horn on the side of her head.
She looked utterly terrified, and she was trembling within his hands. 'Why is she trembling?'
"You should be more careful," said a voice within the shadows of the alley. "We don't want to cause trouble for the heroes."
Hiccup recognised his face from the photo that Nighteye showed them earlier this morning. He was face-to-face with the number two of Dragon Killer, Grimmel the Grisly. Without hesitation, he immediately activated his helmet, covering his face entirely.
"I hope you forgive my daughter here, I don't know what to do with her," he said, smiling behind his mask. "Always playing rough, bumping into things."
"Oh, it's no problem," said Lemillion. "Afterwards our fault too."
"Yeah, I should watch where I was going," said Hiccup as calmly as possible. 'Good thing I have this helmet on so you can't tell how nervous I am. I can't do anything that would botch Nighteye's investigation.'
"I know that mask," said Lemillion. "You must be from the Dragon Killers, right? You guys are famous around here."
"Yeah, please don't mind the mask," said Grimmel. "It keeps out the filth. I don't believe I've seen you to in the area before."
"Right, well we're still pretty new so you probably already guessed that much," said Lemillion and looked at Hiccup. "Now in your feet, partner. Can't do much heroin from down there."
Lemillion looked at Grimmel closely. 'His guard is obviously up, I can't tell him Sir's name.'
"So what agency do you belong to?" Grimmel asked curiously.
"We're only students," said Lemillion. "Can't claim association with an Agency we're still in school. We're just using our internship to get some experience. Speaking of which we should finish patrolling this section by lunch. Come on, let's go."
"Right," said Hiccup and was about to rise to his feet when the little girl grassed in tightly.
"Please, please don't go," she whispered.
Hiccup looked up at Grimmel. "Sorry, but your daughter seems scared."
"Every action of being scolded," he said, narrowing his eyes.
Lemillon wished that he could talk to Hiccup, but he couldn't. 'Making him more suspicious.'
"Were you making your way to a hospital, because your daughter seems to have bandages all over," Hiccup noted. "I take it that she praised rather rough for a girl her age."
"Ariel's rather clumsy girl," said Grimmel.
'Her whole body is shaking, yet she is not making a sound,' Hiccup noted. "Maybe you should keep a close eye on her."
"Oh, you can be certain that I will."
"Sounds good to me," said Lemillion and then he grimaced. 'This is bad, Grimmel obviously doesn't us to pry. If we spook him now, he'll be even less likely to show himself. We have to let it go.'
Hiccup was stuck on a rock and a hard place. 'Marcario obviously want us to go, but that would only making more suspicious. What hero would abandon a frightened child.'
'When we put on our costumes and take to the streets…'
'… we're heroes.'
Hiccup looked at Grimmel. "What are you doing to this girl?"
Grimmel sighed. "You heroes really pick up on the subtlest things, don't you? Very well…" The two of them somewhat surprised that he was being so forthcoming, though more than likely he was gonna tell them a lie. "… This is very embarrassing, so I prefer to discuss it where we won't be overheard."
Hiccup rose to his feet, taking Ariel up and loved it Lemillion, who nodded. The two of them then followed Grimmel into the alleyway.
"Hard to admit that you can't control your own child, but lately Ariel defies me lately no matter what I try," said Grimmel.
"What do you try?" Hiccup asked.
"Parenting sure sounds tough," said Lemillion. "It can't be easy."
"Yes, children are tricky so determined to do whatever they want," he said as he reached for his gloves. Ariel saw the movement, and her eyes widened in horror. "But sometimes they just don't listen."
She then quickly pulled away from Hiccup and ran over towards Grimmel. "Oh, good. Don't let your temper tantrum?"
She merely nodded timidly.
Hiccup and noticed the movement as well and could tell that she was still frightened. "Ariel, are you sure?"
"She's always like this," said Grimmel. "Sorry to involve you in our family drama, I'm sure you have better things to do. Good luck with your internships."
Grimmel then escorted Ariel away.
"You noticed it too, did you?" said Lemillion looking at Hiccup. "He was ready to get violent."
Hiccup nodded. "She was utterly terrified and those bandages, you don't get hinges like that for being clumsy."
"We better go back and report to Sir."
Hiccup still for that they could have done more just as it began to rain.
Nighteye and Bubble Girl were hanging around the Dragon Killer headquarters, unaware of Hiccup and Marcario confrontation.
"They may be weaker than they used to be, but the Dragon Killer Clan still know how to pick a stronghold," said Bubble Girl. "Nice high walls are not too many windows, right?" She then felt her phone vibrate. "Oh, my phone."
"After a week-and-a-half of surveillance I feel as if there are fewer comings and goings today," said Nighteye.
"What?" Bubble Girl gasped she answered her phone. "It's Million, he says they came into contact with the Grimmel."
Grimmel was making his way down a spotless corridor with the white-robed man carrying Ariel behind him.
"Young people today are sick of them ever," he said, sounding disgusted. "Chrono prepare the bath."
"Yes, sir," said Chrono.
A man in a mask then quickly approached Grimmel. "I feel sorry boss, I swear that I barely took my eyes off her. The kid made a break for it."
Grimmel had enough of his excuses and struck him with his hand, moments later he exploded, causing blood to be drenched all across the wall.
"And clean that up," said Grimmel.
"Right," Chrono nodded.
Ariel had eyes firmly shut and covered her ears as she cried.
"This is maddening," said Grimmel. "They're ball infected with hero syndrome."
Hiccup and Lemillion met up with Nighteye and Bubble Girl, giving them their full report.
"I'm sorry, it was totally unexpected," said Lemillion apologetically. "Anyone the odds that we would randomly run into our target on the street like that."
"No, I must accept responsibility," said Nighteye. "I should have used my power on you, it's my fault."
"I'm just glad you guys are okay," said Bubble Girl. "You could've been in danger if he suspected something."
"Didn't feel all that scary to me," said Hiccup.
"Grimmel and his gang were involved in a recent traffic accident caused by a group of hoodlums," said Nighteye. "Which isn't remarkable in of it itself, except there were zero casualties. The thieves experienced intense pain and lost consciousness, but they were uninjured and even reported that pre-existing elements like rheumatism and cavities were completely gone. The authorities believe that Grimmel's power was responsible, but with the villains caught and no but he harmed there was no tried to accuse him of."
"The money there that was stolen burnt out, so there was nothing left to recover," said Bubble Girl. "The police didn't find any sign of a crime in that regard either, but the whole thing seems suspicious, so Nighteye Agency began watching Dragon Killer. We haven't figured out what it is yet, but we know they're up to something."
"Oh, I forgot," said Lemillion. "Sir, we got lucky, at least a little, our brief encounter revealed some new intel. Grimmel, he has a daughter."
"A daughter?" said Nighteye.
"A little girl he called Ariel," said Hiccup. "Her limbs were all wrapped in bandages, I don't know anything else about, but she was asking for help. There must be something we can do to protect."
"I won't let your arrogance interfere with this case," said Nighteye bluntly.
Hiccup was slightly taken aback. "But Sir…"
"Haste won't help the situation, take your time pursuing a target. If you rush they are much more likely to escape, you're not so special that can save whoever you want whenever you want."
Hiccup is a little crestfallen but did not reply.
"We have asked other agencies to team up with us," Nighteye continued. "We first must predict our opponent's moves and then make preparations to face him. Good intentions alone are not enough to save the world. The wisest villains hide in the shadows, in order to find them we must watch and wait. The two of you should head back into the office for today. Bubble Girl, let's go."
"Yes, sir," said Bubble Girl, the two of them, walked off.
This was not how Hiccup expected his first day on his Work-Study to end now he felt sick to his stomach.
Grimmel and Chrona then reached some sort of operation room with Ariel.
"Ariel, you have to stop disobeying me like this," said Grimmel. "You are the core of my plan, you know, and I would hate to get my hands dirty."
Then the villain in the small black costume approached with a phone in his hand.
"Grimmel, got a sec?" he asked. "It's Krogan from the League of Villains, he says that he's got an answer for you."
The next day Hiccup was back in his classroom with the rest of his class, and Snotlout and Ranger were covered in bandages.
"So, what happened to Snotlout?" Ruffnut asked, looking at Clueless. "Was he fighting again?"
"He wasn't the only one busted up, look at the back of the room," he said gesturing to Ranger.
"What happened to those two?"
Clueless sat down at his desk. "The Provisional Licence Classes sure sound tough."
"Must be great workouts, though."
"Stop talking like I'm not here!" Snotlout snapped angrily.
"Where's Astrid and Heather?" Speedfist asked.
"Ragnar and Dogsbreath aren't here either," Ingrid noted.
"Oh, you didn't hear?" said Sven. "Those four found places to do Work Studies."
"Wow, for real?" said Ingrid shocked.
"Hey, how did you Work-Study go?" Agnar asked Hiccup. "Where there are a lot of scantily cladded heroines at the Agency, huh?"
Hiccup just sat there depressed. "Sorry, what?"
"I don't want to hear you getting ahead of me!" Snotlout snapped.
Hiccup gave a small chuckle, but his mind quickly went back to his Work-Study. The fact that he was forced to leave Ariel with Grimmel. Then there is a conflict between his father and his former sidekick and of course he found himself right in the middle of it.
As a result, he started doing poorly on everything they did got so bad that the teachers were beginning to consider to take off Work Studies. Hiccup decided to finally get to the bottom of this and began to track down his father.
Stoick was having his afternoon jog around the campus, despite the that he was retired he still liked to keep his body in shape. He only stopped jogging when he saw Hiccup racing towards him with incredible speed.
"Hiccup, how do you know I would be out here?" he asked.
Hiccup looked at him with a firm's expression. "You knew what I would be walking into, didn't you? You could have told me that he resented me, he practically rejected me as your successor. How my supposed to know my battles when you refuse to tell me about them."
Stoick sighed. "He doesn't resent you, he resents me. You may take after your mother, but in terms of charisma and stubbornness you take after me."
"Dad, you can't keep secrets from me," said Hiccup.
"You may regret this," Stoick sighed.
"But at least I'll know."
"Nighteye has always been a fan of mine, it was my policy not to take in sidekicks. Even me and your mother worked separately. Eventually, he convinced me, and I allowed him to be my number two. We work together for about five years, he was the brains behind my operation you may remember him coming to the house every now and then when you were little."
"I know that much, you two got along if I remember correctly," said Hiccup.
Stoick nodded. "We did, but six years ago, we dissolved our partnership because of my injury. Turns out we had different values."
Stoick began thinking back to 6 years ago after his battle with Drago. Recovery Girl had managed to save his life, but it had weakened him considerably. Both Valka and Gobber battled alongside him, and they had taken quite a beating but were in much better shape than him.
Principal Dustin was also there with Nighteye as he tried to convince him to retire, but of course, he was too stubborn to listen.
"This is reckless, Skullcrusher," he said. "It's time for you to step down."
"I can't, not when everyone is looking to me for help," said Skullcrusher as he leaned against the wall. "I can't leave a job undone."
"Keep doing hero work in that condition, and the entire world is going to suffer. If you wish for enduring peace, then retire when you're a legend."
"If you're looking for a successor, why not search at Berk?" Dustin offered. "You've done more than anyone could ask, perhaps it's time for you to take a rest and let others take up the fight."
"He's right, you have a son to raise," said Nighteye. "Just find a replacement and trust your role in society to them, it's time."
"And who would be the Symbol of Peace until I find someone like that?" Skullcrusher asked stubbornly. "Even if Drago Bludvist is defeated, another villain will replace him."
Skullcrusher kept on limping away but lost his footing and nearly collapsed.
"I know the importance of the symbol!" Nighteye yelled, catching him in his arms. "I've via its function! But please, Skullcrusher, you can't even fight right now. I'll say it again, you must retire! If you continue your hero activities like this, then I won't support you, I won't! I can't!"
Skullcrusher looked at him. "You saw it, didn't you? I told you not to use your powers on me!"
"If you step away now, another number one will appear," Nighteye assured him. "Things will be rough for a while, but we'll survive. We can find a way through it together."
"And while we're figuring this all out how many people will have to fear for their lives?"
"Listen to us!"
Skullcrusher pushed away from him and continue to limp away. "Besides, your powers are never wrong, so why fight this?"
"Because there hasn't been any precedent for it! But I think… I think I can change the future! At this rate, events will play out as I've seen, that can't happen! Don't you see, I can hear because I want to do something to help you? Please, Skullcrusher!"
"I'm sorry, but for the sake of this world… I have to keep fighting."
"Please stop!" Nighteye begged. "If you continue like this, you will face off against a villain and die in an unspeakably gruesome death!"
Hiccup just stood there stunned, he can believe that his father was going to die.
"We parted ways after that argument," said Stoick. "We couldn't agree about my future. So I carried on protecting as many people as I could until I could find a worthy successor. Principal Dustin recommended Marcario to me, but Gobber saw something in you that I could not. Then watched you grow, you could end up being stronger than me, and then you have your mother's brainpower to boot. I never told you any of this, because you're my son."
Hiccup then watched as his father continued on jogging.
"Dad is going to die?" he said stunned.
Hiccup just stood the remembering all the injuries his father had taken and all the battles he fought.
'And that's when it hit me… death,' said Hiccup. 'I had known that something bad was coming and that everyone would die someday, been forced to give it… from my father… he'll die.'
Stoick just kept on jogging thinking about his conversation with Hiccup.
'After I watch you grow, I realise that you had what it took to be my successor. I told Nighteye of what I believed, but he was opposed to the idea, and the rift between us grew even deeper.'
"You want to pass your mantel onto your son?" Nighteye yelled over the phone.
"I was reluctant at first, but he has proven himself," said Stoick.
"You said that you would not let him become a hero! Besides, he's only a rookie you should pass your mantel onto someone who is or is about to become a great hero!"
"Maybe, but that does not mean he is not worthy."
Stoick just kept on jogging.
'He rejected my decision, and he thought I was an idiot putting my son in danger. So he began training a candidate that he thought was better.'
"Wait, hold-up!" Hiccup yelled, catching up to him. "Dad, you have to tell me! How far did Nighteye seed in the future!"
"Six or seven years, but the further into the future he sees the hard it is to know. However, his visions have never been wrong before."
Hiccup's eyes widened in horror. "Hold on, then there would be this year or next year. Please tell me you're joking."
"Hiccup, when I heard that I would die I accepted it as my future. I just focused on running at full speed until I got the finish line when I was fighting against Drago I thought that would be the end of the race. However, you were there, son." He then turned around and smiled at him. "I watched you just push for making your own path, and every time I was close to death, you were there to save me. Just like you will make my own path and I will push forwards."
Hiccup was utterly speechless, he was lost for words.
"So far, everything has been what he said, in each case, Nighteye's predictions have come true, and that is why I cannot face him after all these years. Who knows I've already shaped my destiny to the future I want."
"Not yet," said Hiccup. "We can't be positive if his visions won't come true. I would not allow that future to come so no matter what happens, I will always be there to fight fate."
Stoick smiled at him. "Hiccup, I am proud of that hero your coming."
