I'd like to take a moment to once again thank the Celestial Sky Dragon for letting me use his characters, now...
cavmoose: Yup, that's pretty much what went down. I'm going to explain more about the incident from two years ago soon. Subaru's disappearance is a plot point for later though-glad you're interested.
Ushimaru raised an eye at the sight he found next to the music club room.
There was Subaru, his eyes observing the present instruments through the window. His mind seemed to be a million miles away but there was a wistful look in his eye that had the teacher curious.
"Well, you certainly seem interested...'' His remark snapped the boy out of his reverie. ''...do you by any chance have some experience with some instruments?''
"I know my way around a few, I've been playing since I was little, Sensei.'' Subaru missed how this left a few passersby rather surprised.
The teacher hummed ''Why don't you join the club then? I'd imagine they could use an experienced member.''
"It wouldn't work-there's no way I'd be accepted.''
Ushimaru's brow furrowed, he'd thought that this could help quell the unease around him but the boy had a point. He had made sure to read Subaru's file once he heard about the school deciding to take in a delinquent and what he found was certainly surprising. The boy's grades were quite good and while he did seem to have issues in a couple of subjects, overall, he seemed to be a hard worker. Something about his case was awfully peculiar; the details were far too sparse...
It was the school's own incompetence that left a bitter taste in the teachers mouth. How did they even talk about redeeming the boy if something like this happened from the first day? Criminal or not, his records should have been kept private. He knew children's imaginations could run far, but some of the things the students came up with baffled him and the other teachers. A few pegged Subaru as an ivory smuggler and others even assumed he'd stab them with a knife simply if they came near him. He understood being afraid but couldn't those children think?
He exhaled ''...Never mind then, come along, Namikaze. It's almost time for class.''
Nodding, Subaru followed him and they headed upstairs.
As one of the teachers had to leave for an emergency, Subaru's class had a free period. The boy decided to use the time to study a little in the library. After all, given his situation, he had some catching up to do.
On his way, Subaru happened to spot one of the third year volleyball team members wincing as he knelt near a wall with a tentative hand near his ankle. After a moment of thought, he approached the boy, who stiffened ''Wh-what do you want? I told you guys yesterday, I don't want anything to do with...''
The boy blinked when Subaru shook his head, digging his bag before taking out a water bottle and placing it on his ankle. The older teen flinched a little at the cold feeling ''It's no ice pack but that should help for now.''
It did, actually, the third year had to admit. He still had to ask ''Why...why would you...?''
Subaru gave him an even look ''Does there have to be a reason? Cant you just accept someone's help and leave it at that?''
The question left the boy stumped but Subaru was already carrying on, clearly not expecting an answer.
The teen could hear people exchanging surprised remarks that he came to study but he tried to tune them out. Subaru was still upset that people just wrote him off as a terrible person like that-who wouldn't be? He just knew there was no point trying to convince them.
He let out a breath after taking down some notes, leaning back in his seat. He had never been good when it comes to a few subjects but Wakaba's advice and occasional tutoring had been a tremendous help.
It was as he was as he finished with the book and went to grab another that he found a curious sight. It was a young girl who couldn't by any older than ten sitting nearby with a couple of big books next to her. Subaru could tell that those were quite the complex titles but she was completely focused and clearly following everything. A few students had something to say about it too, looking rather confused at her. Though it seemed this wasn't the first time she came here as one of the third years appeared to recognize her, the girl completely tuned them out with ease. The sight was actually nostalgic to Subaru though...
The girl put the book on her lap, crimson eyes flickering up at him ''Was there something you wanted?''
Subaru blinked ''Oh, sorry...I was just thinking-watching you now reminded me of my sister.'' The girl looked surprised. ''She's really smart too-her mind leaps through several points before you even know it. She's always been focused on stuff like computers but she seems to devour books a lot like you're doing now.''
"Ah, I see. Does she go to this school?''
"No...'' Subaru paused momentarily as he realized he didn't even know what school Futaba went to now. ''...does anyone you know go to Shujin?''
"Yes, my older sister. She's a first year-I'll be joining her in a few months.''
"The boy didn't expect that ''Really?''
"I'm a genius; I've already skipped classes in middle school. The arrangements are being finalized today. It was decided that it was best to move on to a more appropriate level of education for me.''
"That's impressive.'' Subaru returned earnestly. ''You really like reading, huh?''
"Far more than you'd think.'' The girl smiled a little as she glanced at the book in her lap. ''I could simply immerse myself in one for hours, losing myself in the words and thoughts of the authors...it's fascinating.''
He looked intrigued ''So what're you reading?''
"A book about philosophy-I hadn't thought I'd see this volume here but when I found the chance I couldn't help myself.'' The girl raised an eye at the stack of books next to him. ''You seem to have be quite the reader yourself.''
"Not nearly as much as you but yeah, I like it. It's just...things have been hectic for a while and I couldn't study like I should have so I'm trying to make up for lost time.''
She hummed, seeming curious ''Well, your work ethic is to be commended. That's more than I can say for some...'' Her eyes traveled in the direction of the few others in the library for a moment. ''...do they assume people can't hear them or are they just that rude?''
Subaru had to admit, that was a good question. ''Who knows...oh, I'm Subaru. What's your name?''
"Mitsuhide, Isoshima Mitsuhide.'' Her eyes narrowed a little. ''Based on what I've been hearing...are you the delinquent student the school is attempting to reform?''
"Ah, I figured you heard. There's more to the situation but...''
"Oh, don't bother-I can tell.'' Mitsuhide cut in, making him blink. ''You seem far too frail to assault a man like they claim. That medicine bottle I see in your pocket only supports this reasoning. If I'm not mistaken, thats heart medicine-yes?'' He nodded. ''I thought so. Besides, a delinquent wouldn't put in the effort you're throwing into your studies. It's only logical to assume as much. My sister also agrees that the rumors they spun around you are absurd.''
"Glad to hear that-thanks.''
It's nothing to be thanked for.'' Mitsuhide shrugged. ''You've given me the most friendly and amicable conversation I've had through the times I've come here. I think that on its own merits a chance.''
The two talked a bit longer and it turned out they both read some of the same books in the past. Mitsuhide was a little awkward and reserved but she seemed passionate about certain things like philosophy. She was nice though, it wasn't long before the two returned to their respective books but the silence was companionable this time.
When the two had to leave later, Subaru bid the girl farewell, promising to help her if the need arose when she joined the school. He knew how starting in a new school could be hard. It had to be even worse for someone so young-genius or not. Mitsuhide appeared surprised but touched as she thanked him.
Subaru paused on his way back to class as he heard the librarian telling a few people off for making noise nearby. But none of them seemed to hear her, all focusing on something outside. What was that about?
"She's really going to jump?''
"What the hell's going on?''
"Why would Suzui do this?''
The boy soon found a sight that made him freeze. There was Shiho on the rooftop; she was beginning to climb up the fence.
Why...?
Subaru quickly ran, thankful that the library wasn't too far from there. He hoped he could make it in time.
Ryuji could only stare ahead in shock and growing horror ''Shiho, what the hell...?''
He thought something seemed off about the girl today but she'd avoided all eye contact with him, remaining listless through class. She'd eventually asked for permission to go to the bathroom and then...
The teachers were trying to get some order in classes but no one was listening. Ryuji half expected Ushimaru to be trying to force them in but the man appeared dumbfounded. He could also see Kawakami and Chouno staring at the roof in horror at the end of the corridor.
As much as he wished they would get a move on, he could totally understand the sentiment. He had gotten to be good friends Shiho and Ann since the latter knocked sense into him in first year. Things were kind of rough this year and he suspected the girls were hiding something but believed they'd tell him if it was important. Which was why he just didn't understand, what on earth happened to Shiho?
Ann was thinking on the same lines. She wanted to move but she didn't think her legs could carry her. One question was running in her mind over and over: what on earth happened to Shiho?
"Hey, look!''
The student's cry made her start, looking back to the roof in time to see a surprise...
"Stop!''
Shiho stiffened at the voice, her eyes widening when she found someone at the roof's entrance ''N-Namikaze-kun?''
Subaru was breathing fast, thankful he'd made it before she climbed to the other side. The boy was struck by how...defeated Shiho appeared. Sure, he thought she seemed tired before but nothing like this. It had been less than twenty four hours when he'd last seen her. What did this mean?
"Suzui-san, what happened? Why are you...?''
She looked away, she'd resolved to do this earlier but a part of her was still scared. She'd suffered for so long and finally reached her breaking point-Shiho had resolved to do this before but the thought that someone might try to stop her crossed her mind. Namely because Shiho hoped someone would've helped a long time ago-she hadn't thought it would really happen though...
"...I have to, I can't take this anymore.''
"Wait, that's Namikaze?''
"Of all the people to get there, it had to be him...''
"Yeah, he's just going to mess everything up!''
Ryuji rounded on the three speakers ''Shut it! Don't talk about him like that-at least Subaru's actually doing something!''
It said a lot that no one, especially the present teachers, could look the boy in the eye at this. But Ryuji paid them no mind, grabbing the shell-shocked Ann and leading her ahead.
Kasumi had to admit that she couldn't agree more with Ryuji. Where did they get off badmouthing the one person who was actually trying to help Shiho? She didn't know the girl well but she and Sumire had met her in passing, she was really nice. What could've pushed her to this?
Sumire could barely take her eyes off the roof, hands clasped tightly as she prayed Subaru could pull this off.
A wide-eyed Mitsuhide was staring at the scene, oblivious to her stunned mother nearby. Like Subaru, she'd learned of this shortly after leaving the library so she knew the only way he could've made it was if he hurried over straight away. The little girl didn't know what was going on but she hoped he could save her.
Subaru was trying to think fast, he tried get closer to Shiho, which made her recoil. Thankfully, this meant she was also stepping further from the fence. ''I can help you, you don't have to do this...''
Yes, I do!'' Shiho cried. ''You don't know anything-you have no idea how horrible it's been this whole time! I tried and I tried to put up with it but it was no good...you don't understand-you couldn't understand!''
"Then make me understand.'' The boy returned.
But Shiho shook her head ''...You should leave. What happens to me doesn't matter.''
"Of course it does!'' Subaru countered at once. ''Remember what we talked about yesterday? I can see how bad things are becoming here even if people try to cover it all up. I can't imagine trying to live with this for so long but that's why we're trying to help.''
"It's too late...'' Shiho clenched her fists, shaking as her eyes watered. ''...nothing's going to change. I tried so hard to put up with it like everyone said. It looked like it was the only thing we could do. Everything...everything I worked for...it was all for nothing, that's why Im going to die! I have to! He took everything away from me!''
The boy tensed ''...What did he do to you?''
There was no question as to this person's identity, Shiho knew that as well ''...You and Ryuji w-were right...we were happy when K-Kamoshida...came back to the school but...I wish he never did, I wish I never met him! His 'training' is absolutely horrible, he only cares about himself. He abuses us but no one would ever hear a word against him. The school protects him for the sake of a better reputation. He...he started focusing much more on me when he found out that Ann was my best friend. He used that to threaten me-he said he'd kick me off the team and make Ann his if I don't do what he wanted.''
Subaru's blood ran cold, remembering what Ann told him yesterday. The girl's entire motivation for putting up with Kamoshida was protecting her best friend.
And now it turned out that Shiho was in the same position all along...
"I couldn't let him do that-I wanted to get help but h-he...he just gloated...he said no one would ever believe it. I'm just one, pathetic girl who no one cares about and he's an Olympic medalist.'' Shiho pursed her lips, paying no mind to the tears falling down her face. ''He was right! He was right about everything-people knew about the abuse but they kept their heads down. The school protected him and he used that to do whatever he wanted. We were his puppets; no one ever seemed to care until you came along...I t-told myself...that it'd be okay. That I'd...take it if it was for Ann's sake...'' Her breathing quickened. ''...but I was wrong. Just when I thought things couldn't get worse, they did...you know what happened after we talked yesterday? He took me to the office and...And...h-he...''
"Suzui-san?'' He started when she pursed her lips. ''You don't...''
But Shiho wasn't listening, she'd been struggling with all that monster put them through for so long. Now that she'd come out with it, she couldn't seem to stop ''He...he raped me!'' Subaru froze. ''I had to put up with him groping me and stuff before so I didn't realize what he was up to...when I did...he hit me so hard that I could barely see straight and...then...I couldn't...do anything...''
Subaru was filled with a myriad of emotions in rapid succession. Horror that someone could be so despicable, rage that someone would do such a thing, as well as disgust at all the manipulations and apathy in the school to the point that it pushed someone so kind and brave to the brink. But also, most importantly, determination-he was not about to let that rotten scumbag hurt this girl anymore. He couldn't let her go through with this.
"...That's why I'm going to do it...'' Shiho managed.
"That's why I'm going to stop you.''
Her eyes widened a little at this, meeting the boy's gaze. She expected to find nothing but disgust there, only it was the opposite. His expression was resolute but his eyes only held compassion.
"Why?! This has nothing to do with you-why do you keep doing this? What does it matter?''
*...He's not worth your life, Suzui-san and he never will be.'' The response made her stiffen. ''None of this should have ever happened. Everyone's been too afraid to speak up-they think they're saving themselves by keeping their heads down. But you put up with all this for Takamaki-san's sake, I can't imagine how horrible it must've been. But it shows you're a great person. You have nothing to be ashamed of-the one who should be ashamed is Kamoshida. This is why I refuse to let you go through with this-because you're better than him. I know I can't be the only one who'd think so. What about those you care for? Your family? Ryuji and Takamaki-san? What you've been through is beyond cruel, Suzui-san but this isn't the way.''
Shiho stepped back, her mouth opening but no words coming out. Subaru carried on ''One way or the other, Kamoshida will be stopped. He may be powerful but he's not omnipotent. It might be much consolation now and I'm sorry but he will answer for this. Would you rather help make it happen or just give up now?"
He could see that his words were getting through to the distraught girl, who slowly backed away. She seemed much more conflicted now, Subaru felt badly for being blunt with her but he didn't think sugarcoating things wasn't going to cut it. He only told her what he believed-this couldn't continue. Kamoshida had gone too far.
"I...I just...I can't stay like-I can't bear it! B-but...I don't know what to do! E-even if you say this...it feels like it's all over...nothing's going to be the same...'' Shiho trailed off.
"Maybe, but that's not a bad thing.'' Subaru countered. ''Things can change for the better, even if it doesn't seem likely now. You have people who care for you. People who would definitely help you-no matter what that jackass said-he's wrong. Because you are worth it and I refuse to let you believe otherwise.''
The girl tried to speak but the words seemed to fail her. Before Subaru knew it, she'd wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug and sobbed. Subaru returned the gesture, wishing there was something he could do.
When Ann and Ryuji arrived minutes later, it was to find an exhausted Shiho slumping in Subaru's hold as the latter tried to comfort her...
With help from a newly arrived Kawakami, Chouno and Ushimaru, the blondes got the two to the infirmary. Ann watched as the nurse examined the unconscious Shiho for a few moments before turning to hug Subaru, startling the boy. ''Thank you...thank you so much...if it hadn't been for you...''
"It's no big deal-I just did because I wanted to.'' He patted her back.
"You really came through for her, man.'' Ryuji returned. ''So yeah, she's right-thanks a bunch. It means a lot to us.''
"That was impressive, Mr. Namikaze. Thank you.'' Chouno added while Kawakami nodded.
Subaru didn't do it for thanks and he had no problem saying as much ''I'm just glad it worked...''
"...We all just lost our heads but you went for the heart of the problem, thanking you is the least we should do.'' Ushimaru admitted. Shiho was part of his class and despite his strict nature; he did want what was best for the students. The fact that she was pushed to the brink under his eye while he was none the wiser was troubling to say the least.
"Namikaze, did Suzui tell you why she made this choice?'' Ushimaru's eyes narrowed when the boy's expression darkened.
"I'd like to know that too...'' They looked over at the nurse as she approached, looking pale. ''...I have no idea how that poor girl even made it to school today-she's in a terrible state. Namikaze-kun, what happened?''
Subaru exhaled before proceeding to fill them in. Exclamations of shock and outrage followed his explanation, Ryuji and Ann appeared livid while Ushimaru was stunned as Chouno's mouth fell.
"He...he wouldn't stoop that low...'' Kawakami trailed off, but even she sounded unsure.
"Like Shiho would like about this?!'' Ann demanded hotly.
Subaru was calmer but the look in his eye made it clear that he was similarly displeased ''You didn't see Suzui-san back there-she was suffering so much this whole time. I really don't think someone in such a state would make something like this up.''
"I'd have to agree. Besides, Suzui-chan's a good kid, she wouldn't do something like that.'' Chouno added.
"I know, but...but what she said...it means...'' The teacher couldn't look her in the eye. She knew she wasn't the most...attentive person in school but the thought that Kamoshida did something like that sickened her...
Ann rounded on Kawakami ''What? That Kamoshida's a despicable slimeball and someone's finally doing something about it? What, he's a teacher and that makes Shiho and Namikaze-kun liars? Face it; things just keep getting worse since he got here. Look how much he hurt Ryuji-everybody just thought he was in the right and nobody bothered trying to understand. Face it, he's nothing but a piece of a shit!''
"You got that right!'' Ryuji stood. 'We tried getting the truth to help the team but no one would help. Everybody just lets Kamoshida rule the school-well, I've had it!''
Ann started as he headed for the door ''W-wait a minute...!''
"Wait, for what?! Are we just supposed to let this slide?'
"Of course not! If we want to make him pay, we have to be smarter about this. Just coming out and saying it won't help-not when he's so powerful. That's why I had to play along...'' Ann froze, immediately regretting the words as Ryuji looked at her in growing alarm.
"What's that mean?'' Ryuji grabbed her shoulder when she didn't respond. ''Ann?''
Subaru looked at the two with growing concern. He knew what was happening to the girls now but he hadn't considered what it was like on Ryuji's end. Two of his friends were also suffering under the man who hurt him so much all along...
"Miss Takamaki? What did you mean just now?'' Chouno demanded.
"Answer her, dammit! What did he make you do?'' Ryuji added, frustration rising in his tone.
Ann looked pained as she exhaled, finally explaining what she told Subaru the previous day. Those not in the know looked at her with clear shock, Chouno needed a few moments to her voices ''You mean, this is where the rumors come from? This entire time, he...''
Ushimaru frowned ''Why didn't you ask for help?'' Surely anything could've been better than this...
"Help from who?!'' Ann demanded hotly, her eyes watering. ''Kamoshida pretty much took over the school, look what he did to Ryuji and the track team. People know what went down but they still act like Ryuji was in the wrong when that monster crossed the line! Ryuji gets labeled as a delinquent but nobody ever tried to help. I couldn't let him hurt Shiho. Namikaze-kun was the one who actually cared enough to help. Teachers are supposed to look out for students, when was the last time you bothered helping us, huh?!''
The teachers were struck by the pain and sadness in her tone, but it was little wonder when she had been struggling for so long. What hit the three the worst was that they couldn't refute her words.
The girl's shoulders shook as she let out a sob, struggling to hold back her tears. ''I thought...I thought I was protecting her. That's why I put up with all he said no matter how much it sickened and now I find out I might as well have been helping him...''
"Hold on, that's not true...'' Subaru started but both were distracted when Ryuji headed to the door.
"R-Ryuji?'' Ann started.
"How long were you planning on hiding this?'' The boy demanded, making her stutter. ''Kamoshida's been making your lives hell this whole time and you wouldn't say a word. I was happy to know you wanted to keep being friends...but I guess you never really trusted me, huh?''
"What? No! It wasn't like that...'' Ann stopped as he stormed off, lowering her head. ''...I wanted to help...he's already been through enough...''
Subaru and Ann hurried to the door but that was when the paramedics arrived for Shiho...
When Subaru caught up to the boy, it was to find Ryuji near the teacher's lounge with Mishima in tow. The former appeared furious while Mishima was clearly terrified. ''Ryuji?'' The two looked at him, surprised. ''What happened?''
His eyes widened at the quick explanation. Ryuji had chosen to confront Kamoshida, who didn't even bat an eye at his accusations. Mishima had arrived in the midst of it, calling him out on the abusive training. The man smugly cited how no one would believe a thing they say, calling himself the Olympic god of Shujin. He proceeded to declare that he was going to expel Ryuji and Mishima during the next teacher's meeting.
"Can he really do that?'' Subaru clarified.
"Hell, if I know...'' Ryuji spat. ''...but it's possible. Just look how much he was given already. Though I guess his gopher could tell us plenty about that.'' He glared at Mishima, who shrunk away.
The green eyed boy looked confused ''Gopher?''
"Kamoshida had him spread your record.'' The former grunted. ''You're the reason everyone's been treating my friend like shit.'' He missed Subaru's surprise as he carried on. ''He's a real good guy and no one's ever bothered to understand that thanks to you!''
"I...I had no choice...'' Mishima's gaze was lowered. ''...I just...I just did what he said...he made me...''
"Oh, is that all? You really are a coward...!'' Ryuji scowled as the boy winced.
Subaru found that he couldn't even get angry, not really. The boy looked as defeated as Shiho. They were both victims of a terrible, terrible man. ''Don't.'' The two looked up, startled. ''It's okay, Ryuji.'' The boy made to argue but the former shook his head. ''That doesn't matter now. Look, Mishima, can you explain a few things?''
"Y-you're not...mad?'' The boy clarified.
"I don't really care about that stuff now. You're just as much a victim as the rest of the team. I think you've been punished enough already.'' Subaru returned.
Mishima felt infinitely worse, he'd just reiterated that it was all on Kamoshida's orders to feel better but that wasn't effective. The boy really was kind-far kinder than he deserved.
"Why isn't anyone doing something about the abuse?''
The blue haired boy looked down before he began to explain...
"I can't believe this!'' Ryuji kicked at a wall. ''Nuts, they're all freakin' nuts!''
Subaru completely understood where he was coming from. They knew how Kamoshida controlled things in school but to think it was this bad...
Many knew about the abuse the entire time. They just put their heads down to avoid any trouble and hope for the best, it seemed. The former track team's coach quickly decided to do something about it, only to be fired shortly afterwards. Then what happened with Ryuji had scared many stiff and Kamoshida used the incident to reinforce his rule of iron, ensuring that no one would tread out of line.
"They could've done anything-anything at all, but they chose the easy way out!'' Ryuji continued to fume. And it's probably gonna happen again, who knows when they're gonna get their heads outta the sand!''
"You don't know that...'' Subaru tried to point out only to falter, unsure.
"Dude, Ann was right. It took you turning up here for things to finally begin changing even a little! I think we would've seen if anything could be done about it now. Ushimaru and the others could try but they'll probably get shut down.'' The boy retorted. ''If the guys in charge cared about us, Kamoshida would've been botted out a long time ago. That asshat wasted no time coming after you too-he just wouldn't dirty his hands, of course. Everything's going the way he wants it all this time. I never even knew how bad it really was...''
Subaru knew he was thinking about his friends ''...Ryuji, she was trying to help. I know you're upset but she was looking out for you in her own way...''
The blond sighed ''...I know...it doesn't feel any better but yeah...''
"There you are.''
A black cat with bright blue eyes and a yellow scarf jumped down before the boys, who looked on in confusion.
"Err, Subaru, did the cat just...?'' Ryuji received a nod.
"I thought I said it before, I'm not a cat!''
Subaru blinked, the cat's familiar colors making it click for him ''Morgana?''
"Yup!''
"The hell?! How are you here now?'' Ryuji exclaimed.
"I wasn't expecting this form either but it happened when I came to this world.'' Morgana returned simply. ''I came looking for you guys but things were pretty chaotic. What happened? I saw an ambulance carry someone out...''
The feline's jaw dropped after Subaru gave him a rundown of the situation ''You've got to be kidding me! I knew the man was pretty bad but I didn't think he was so depraved. Those poor girls...'' He blinked at Ryuji, who was staring at nothing with a dark look. ...what's with Blondie?''
"He just found out about the worst of it today, Morgana. The girls I just mentioned are his close friends.''
"Oh...'' The cat's expression softened, no wonder this hit hard. ''...how're you holding up?''
"...I'm not the one you should worry about, but thanks.'' Ryuji grunted. ''So why'd you come over now?''
"Well, it's actually about the Palace. We can use it to take Kamoshida down.''
His eyes widened ''How?!''
Morgana cleared his throat ''The Palace was created by Kamoshida's cognition. He sees himself as the king of the school so he rules everything there with an iron first. It's not too far from the truth here apparently-but we can use that.'' He smirked. ''See, the castle has a treasure. Its a form of his crystallized corrupted desires which makes heart of the Palace. If the treasure is taken the entire thing will fall apart and Kamoshida will have a change of heart.''
Ryuji raised an eye and Subaru thought that over ''So, he would be changed for the better?''
The blond huffed when Morgana nodded, cutting him off before he could respond 'Eff that! He doesn't deserve...''
"Hold on, I think you'll like this.'' Morgana cut in. ''Subaru has the basic idea right but there's more to it. See, taking the treasure triggers a change in his cognition. With his corrupted desires taken, not only will he be much different, he's going to confess to all his crimes.''
"Oh!'' Ryuji blinked. ''That sounds better...but ain't it a little too convenient? Is there a catch?''
"That's just it-I know taking the treasure affects the ruler greatly. Desires are important to people, taking them means we could end up taking the person's will to live.''
"So he could die?!''
"That's just it, I'm not sure.'' Morgana sounded frustrated. ''I really tried to find out so I started interrogating some Shadows. It took a while but I got some information. I don't like the idea of relying on them fully but it was my only choice. One thing they all shared was that the Palace would be no more if the treasure is taken, none of them said anything about it affecting Kamoshida. It sounded like they have no idea what would happen, actually. I know his cognition would change without the Palace though.''
That was a relief. It didn't quite eliminate the risk factor but at least this didn't mean certain death.
Morgana peered up at Subaru, noticing his expression ''Were you that worried?''
"Ah...'' The boy glanced at the two of them but nodded. ''...I can't stand Kamoshida anymore than either of you and...As much as I think he deserves to pay, there are some lines we shouldn't cross.''
Ryuji held back a wince. He'd been so angry and frustrated that he'd hardly given the consequences a thought ''Yeah...yeah, you're right.''
Their companion nodded and the blond carried on ''So how do we get at him?''
Morgana's response was cut off by an unexpected arrival ''...You guys are planning to do something about Kamoshida, right?'' The three whirled around to find Ann approaching. ''I want in!''
"W-wait, Ann? When did you...?'' Ryuji spluttered.
"Wow...what a meowvelous girl...'' Morgana said with a dreamy tone.
The girl's attention was on Ryuji ''I want to do something about this too. I tried to see what the teachers would do-they actually did tell the principal. I didn't stick around for it all but he was still saying something about how good Kamoshida was for the school.''
The boy's expression turned into one of utter rage at this. He might have guessed this would happen but the news wasnt any less unpleasant.
Subaru looked disgusted ''They really are going to dismiss this after all...?''
The school's negligence was what allowed Kamoshida's crimes, but to think they'd even let this incident slide...that was just despicable.
But it only got worse from here as Ann quickly proved ''Nothing's changed at all-the bastard even told me that. He thinks he's the king of the school and can take what he whatever he wants, including me. That everyone who goes against him is going to regret it and he's going to make sure of that.''
If that wasn't a threat, Subaru didn't know what was. He noticed Ryuji's fists clenching as the girl carried on ''That's why I refuse to just stay back-if you have a plan then I want to help.''
"I understand how she feels but taking her into the Metaverse...'' Morgana began.
As it happened, Ryuji was thinking along the same lines ''It's too dangerous...''
"Don't give me that!'' Ann spat, her eyes narrowing. ''If you can take action now, what's stopping me? You're not the only one with reasons to fight!''
Thinking it over, Subaru made a decision ''...You're going to have to listen to us.'' The three looked at him ''I mean it-you have no idea what you're getting it. We're still learning ourselves...''
"Dude, what're you doing?'' Ryuji frowned.
"You heard her. We're going to have quite a fight trying to keep her away. Isn't it better if we keep an eye on her?'' The boy reasoned. ''It's dangerous, yes, even more so for her. But look at it this way, that hasn't stopped you, hasn't it?''
Ryuji was forced to concede the point. His position was no different than hers before awakening to Captain Kidd.
Ann looked at him ''I messed up a lot but I want to fix things. Would you stay back now if it was you?''
"...Hell no.'' The boy had to admit.
"Like I was saying, Takamaki-san, this is going to come as a shock but we need you to listen and stick with us.'' Subaru pressed.
The girl's expression grew determined ''Right!''
Ann was speechless.
A part of her thought Subaru may be worrying too much but boy was she proven wrong. Morgana the talking cat (who oddly insisted that he wasn't a cat) but was very polite to her. The Metaverse, the castle, those awful Shadows...and worst of all, what this meant...
"This is how Kamoshida sees the school?!''
Morgana confirmed, briefly telling her about the palace ruler and the way he treated the prisoners. Ann blanched the description ''...I knew he was scum but this...I thought I was protecting Shiho but I really was fooling myself, wasn't I? I'm such an idiot...''
"Oi, oi, enough of that.'' Ryuji cut in. ''You couldn't have known, Ann. Don't you dare blame yourself for caring about our friend.'' At her surprised look, he added. ''I was a little pissed with you, yeah, but I get it. You thought you were trapped-you wanted what was best for us. Even if you never should've done that-you did want to help...I know how much friends meant to you, after all.''
Ann knew the truth coming out would turn out badly but she didn't expect him to be so understanding. This was quite a relief. ''...Thanks...''
"Say that after we take the asshole down.'' The two joined Subaru and Morgana.
"So you said you'd explain...why are you after the treasure?'' The green eyed boy inquired.
"...I'm actually a human.'' The teens looked at him in surprise. ''I woke up in the Metaverse but I have no idea how I got there. But I knew plenty about it-so I think I had some experience as a Persona User before. I tried to learn as much as possible...I fear I may have made quite a mistake to wind up where I was. I think it's the distortions that caused this form so if I get the treasure, I might find a way to deal with it or at least know why the treasures are such a big deal.''
"All the more reason to make sure it happens then.''
Morgana blinked at Subaru, who gave a reassuring look. ''I don't want to think where we'd be without you-you've really helped us out.''
"Yeah, we did say we'd help you before, remember?'' Ryuji smiled a bit.
The feline perked up ''Thanks! Let's go, then!''
A bolt of lightning struck one of the enemies, leaving it vulnerable to Aladdin's spinning sword which finished it off. Ann watched in awe, they told her about Personas but seeing them was something else...
"There!''
"It really is her?''
Stiffening, the girl stepped back as Morgana brandished his sword at the two Shadows hurrying towards them.
For some reason, the enemies tended to oddly focus on Ann even before the others and they kept referring to her as a princess. Most seemed willing to take her away, leaving the boys to fend them off.
"Zorro, Garu!''
The wind spell threw the enemy off balance; Morgana seized this chance to strike. The knight attempted to counter with its lance but the former was faster, allowing him to knock the knight off its horse before quickly finishing it off. ''Are you all right, Lady Ann?''
"Yeah, thanks...'' Ann barely heard him assure that he would protect her, more than a little confused. ''...what's their deal with me anyway?''
"I was wondering about that too-they keep calling her princess or whatever...'' Ryuji added.
"I have a guess.'' Morgana admitted. ''Given what we've learned so far here, I think it's accurate but it's best to save any speculation for now.''
Subaru couldn't help but note that the knights specifically mentioned that they would take Ann back-which didn't make any sense. But considering Morgana's words... ''...They've got the wrong person, huh?''
That's about what I figured.''
A confused Ann pointed out that they clearly recognized her but they were distracted when more Shadows came rushing in. Ryuji stepped in front of the girl, bracing for battle. He struck one of the enemies with his club, sending it reeling. Another Shadow, this one resembling a fairy, began healing it. This was put to a halt when Subaru shot at it repeatedly. Another fairy tried to help this one but Subaru summoned Aladdin, who blasted it with Eiha. The boy quickly took the second weakened fairy out with his blade, Morgana rushed in to strike an enemy who was about to attack them with fire magic, dodging the wisps of flame coming his way before striking back. A Garu from Zorro finished it off and Morgana turned to stop another enemy with Lucky Punch.
The fight continued in a similar vein, the trio took some damage but Morgana was able to heal them with ease. Before long, they had defeated them all and kept going, knowing they couldn't in one pace for too long.
"So where would this treasure be? Ann inquired.
Not sure yet-somehow I can feel it when I'm close so I know it's deeper within the castle. Some areas are protected more than others so I think I narrowed it down a little but I can't go through the whole place myself.'' Morgana admitted.
"Then let's get to it!'' Ryuji exclaimed.
They continued traversing the castle, fighting enemies and picking up the odd treasure here and there. The Shadows were growing more and more confused about Ann's presence with the group, some concentrating on the attempts to bring her back to win the ruler's favor.
Ryuji looked at Subaru and Morgana ''So hey, it sounded like you guys figured something about the princess business out...''
"Way I see it, Kamoshida has those cognitive copies of the volleyball team what's stopping him from having other people?'' Subaru returned.
Ann blanched as she caught on while Ryuji's eyes widened ''So, the princess is actually...?''
Morgana's attention was on a door up ahead ''...We may find out soon. I never did get around to seeing what this place but the guards made it sound like a big deal and...What I'm sensing from there makes me feel dirty...''
Grimacing, Ryuji took that as incentive to prepare for the worst as he opened the door.
The room quickly became another incentive for the four to take Kamoshida down.
A number of girls were chained at the walls, barely wearing anything as they moaned in provocative positions.
Ann's stomach lurched at the thought of Shiho being among this group. She really, really hope the girl wasn't in the castle-she didn't think she could take it...
"...I think I'm going to be sick...'' Morgana muttered weakly and the others completely commiserated. Ryuji was especially angry, explaining that most of them were on the volley ball team. Subaru and Morgana shared stunned looks, both struck at the depths of Kamoshida's deprarvity.
"Well, well, look who it is...'' Shadow Kamoshida sneered at the group. ''...just when I think you miscreants learned your lesson, you dare to interrupt me now?''
"Hah, by my count we beat you twice already!'' Ryuji taunted.
*And your lucky streak ends today.'' He snapped his fingers; four knights appeared a second later. ''I can't believe you fools mistook that brat for my princess. As if she could compare to the real thing...'' At that, a girl who looked exactly like Ann, but was clad in nothing but underwear and a kitten ears headband stepped up from behind him. She had a vacant look in her eye but smiled as she wrapped her arm around Kamoshida's, resting her head on his chest.
"What the-?!'' Ann blurted while Ryuji and Morgana's jaws dropped. Neither said a word but they seemed oddly transfixed by the cognition. ''That's how he sees me?''
Subaru grimaced, trying to avoid looking at the chained girls. The more they learned about Kamoshida, the more repulsive he became...
"You sick fuck!'' Ann spat, her eyes blazing. ''You just think we're toys or something? I knew you were selfish but just who the hell do you think you are, you monster?!''
The Shadow sneered ''The king-everything in this world is mine to do with as I please and nothing you say or do will change that. It's only idiotic peasants like the four of you who can't seem to understand that. Isn't that right, my dear?''
The cognitive Ann giggled as he tapped her chin ''Of course, my king. They should all be eliminated for their disobedience.''
"An excellent idea.'' He smirked and the knights began to advance. The boys made sure to shield Ann, making him chuckle. ''I don't get where you get off calling me selfish.''
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?!''
"That girl-the idiot who tried to jump...'' Ann and Ryuji bristled at the callous words. ''...it's your fault she wound up like that, you know.''
"That's right!'' The princess leaned into the former's hold. ''All you had to do was obey his majesty but you were too selfish to fall in line.''
"Exactly.'' Shadow Kamoshida kissed her cheek. ''But she didn't cut it after all-so it's your turn. Nothing would've happened if you had simply listened...''
Ann was pale, lowering her head. Was this true? It was all her fault? Shiho wouldn't have had to suffer if she hadn't been like that...
"Don't talk about her like that, you ass. If anyone is selfish, it's you!'' Ryuji snapped, making her look up in surprise. ''Ann went through all that because she cares-it makes her a good person. Better than you could ever be!''
"Yeah! Lady Ann's kindness is admirable; she tried to look out for her friends even when she was backed into a corner. I won't let a monster like you demean her!'' Morgana added.
"You guys...'' The girl's eyes watered. Were they right? She just didn't know anything anymore-the day was just filled with shocking revelations.
"...Are you really going to take that?'' Subaru asked her. ''You didn't set out to hurt anyone, Takamaki-san. We know that, you tried to help those you cared for. No one would fault you for that. If you just bow down, that miserable excuse for a human being is going to win. Are you just going to accept that?''
Ann had her answer ready ''No...Absolutely not.'' She glowered at her enemy. ''What the hell was I doing, listening to this piece of shit? I already told myself that he has to be stopped...I won't hold back anymore!''
'Ah, at last...just what I've awaited.'
The girl stiffened, feeling a sharp pain in her skull at the voice. 'You know forgiveness was never an optionn-she must be avenged. Such is the scream of the other you that dwells within...'
Ryuji stared at the red mask on his friend's face ''Whoa, is she...?''
'It seems you finally understand that restraining yourself was never the answer. The time has come. I will lend you my strength.'
"Let's do it, Carmen!'' Ann pulled the mask off. Like before, a great blue blaze surrounded her as a figure materialized before her. It was a beautiful female clad in a flamboyant red dress. Carmen twirled, a smirk forming on her face as she sent out a wave of fire which pushed the enemies back. Ann now wore a red jumpsuit with pink gloves and boots with a whip in hand. Wasting no time, the girl took down her doppelganger ''You hurt Ryuji, you toyed with me and Shiho all this time, you destroyed her...I will rob you of everything!''
"Now that's what I'm talkin' about!'' Ryuji enthused as Shadow Kamoshida growled.
Subaru nodded ''Let's take them down.''
"Yeah!'' The two chimed in.
Morgana smirked 'I'll start us off-Zorro!'' The bulky rogue sent out blades of wind. An enemy tried to strike Morgana but Ann hit it on the head with her whip, allowing her Persona to blast it directly in the face with her flames.
Subaru and Ryuji were surrounded by enemies, the slime monster tried to tackle them only to be stopped when the former spun his blade around as it came closer, cutting it several times. Another enemy's attack was quickly handled by Captain Kidd, three knights charged in tandem but the boys summoned their Personas. The fast red and black blasts of curse magic as well and strong bolt of lightning blowing them back. Ryuji bashed one of the knights' heads and Subaru shot another one down, swiftly slashing the third one twice to defeat it. The two continued in a similar vein, undaunted by the enemy forces with Aladdin's magic empowered scimitar finishing the last one off.
The two remaining knights tried to shield the palace ruler, who was staring at the group of four fearfully. ''Like you can stop us-Carmen!'' The blazing dancer sent out more flames, the enemies tried to guard but they were soon overpowered and badly burned. Ann took one down with her whip while the second kneeling enemy was stomped out by Carmen.
Ann still looked aggravated, noticing that there was no sign of the palace ruler ''Where'd he go?! He can't get away...''
The words died in her mouth as she stumbled, the exhaustion from the awakening beginning to set in. ''Oi, easy!'' Ryuji grabbed her shoulder. ''There's no helping it-we're done for now.''
"Mmhm, you did great, Takamaki-san. You should rest.'' Subaru advised.
"Just great? She was amazing!'' Morgana almost swooned before shaking himself. ''But, ah, they're right. We can't take that scumbag down so easily, I'm afraid. It's a bit of a process but I promise it's worth your while.''
"...It better be.'' Ann smiled as the boys helped her up. ''Thanks...for what you all said back there too. I appreciate it.''
"We've got your back.'' Subaru assured.
"Totally!'' Ryuji chimed in.
Morgana followed the three out of the room with a growing smile. As awful as the day had been, it seemed they had found the silver lining. He hadn't expected to find any help in his mission but here they were. Morgana felt the four of them had the makings of an excellent team.
Kamoshida wouldn't know what hit him.
Well, let's stop here.
I thought about different ways to handle this part but this was the best I could settle for. I honestly don't see Kamoshida's backers just letting him go so easily and Kobayawa always does put the school's rep first. The word hasn't spread out yet so he's trying to do damage control. Shiho's word would've had the most weight there but she's unconscious. Kamoshida's still got too much power for something to be done about him so easily. Not much is going to change for the moment but this day is going to have lasting consequences down the line.
Oh, Mitsuhide is from the Celestial Sky Dragon's Codename: Songbird. I like his work so I got his permission to use his characters before beginning this story. So thank you again.
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Till next time!
