The Professor arrived back from his trip, Hank greeted him.
"Hank." The Professor nodded a greeting
"What happened?"
"We're not sure. Ororo woke me up in the middle of the night and told me about it. We've been working all night to try and find out what's going on. It's like some sort of venom or something. But in order to affect Logan like that, it'd have to be very powerful."
"Yes, it would." They walked up to the med lab in the Institute, where the couple were still.
Wheeling into the room he saw them, him on the bed, her sitting next to him, concentrated on nothing else than her mate. He was laying on his side still attempting to cradle himself. She was partially bent over him, as if whispering something to him, and trying to hug him at the same time while in a slightly awkward position. Charles decided not to bother them upon entering the room, so continued anymore conversation with Beast through his telepathy.
By the end of an hour the Professor and Beast had come up with what they knew was the most accurate answer they could find...
"Poisoned?!" Ororo asked not wanting to believe what the two men had told her.
"Yes, I believe that's what we're dealing with my dear." The Professor said not wanting to believe his own words. There was silence in the room for the next few seconds...
"What can we do to counter act it?" She asked, the men looked to each other then back to her a moment later.
"Well, we don't know." Her eyes started to glaze over as she was losing her patience for the 3rd time today.
"What do you mean you don't know..." She asked her voice turning rich with power, both men looked a bit frightened at the sudden display.
"Storm, calm down!" Charles ordered, not realizing that wasn't the best thing to say at that moment, he could tell her eyes were on him as Beast's fur started to float.
"My husband is in great pain and you expect me to take this as an answer?!"
"If you electrocute the room you'll zap him to, and in his state he might not even heal from it this time Ororo..." Beast stated doing his best to stay as calm as possible.
Knowing what Hank said was true she closed her eyes and took a couple deep breaths, then opened her eyes again, this time they were back to normal except with a shade of violet in them alone with their usual blue.
"If we knew exactly what poison it was we could tell you what you need to do, otherwise it could make him worse..." She did her best to keep her composure but both men could tell she was losing it.
"Hhhuuuugghhhhhh." She sighed out loud rubbing her face with her left hand, then wrapped her arms around herself looking to the corner of the room.
"We're doing our best Ororo, in the mean time I'll see if we can give him something to lessen the symtoms." With that he gave her a small apologetic smile and moved closer to her embracing her in the security of his furry buffness.
"He's going to get through this... you both are." He whispered in her ear.
As much as she knew that he was telling the truth about doing his best part of her was telling her that he and the Professor were holding something from her. She knew in her heart that the thought was nothing but a big lie, but part of her couldn't help but wonder if it was right or not. Then another thought crossed her mind.
Only God knew how many times Logan had felt the same thing, no wonder it took him so long to open up to some of them with his background. All those lies people had told him about his past, who he was, what he was, making him go do something just so he wouldn't be somewhere when someone he loved needed his protection and ended up in the obituary... She turned back to him as he stirred, she never left his side for the rest of the time he was there.
Logan had been in the infirmary for a couple days while being studied and examined for anything out of order, while the pain was still there constantly he was adapting to it just like he adapted to the metal on his bones and learned to live with it. But he was getting worse, none of them wanted to believe it, but they all knew.
Ororo had been there by his side from the moment that he got there, and would not leave his side. Neither would their kids, especially their youngest son Ayotunde, who was there all the time since the previous day, despite being instructed to do the things that all kids would need to do, like eat, and sleep. The conversation they'd had the previous night was adorable.
Previous night:
"I can stay up and watch over Daddy just like he does for us. You'll see Momma." She smiled tenderly at their little boy who was set on making sure that his Dad was going to be perfectly fine.
"That's how it's gonna be huh…" Logan said smirking to the little one beside him.
"Yep!" He answered back final on his choice, Logan looked back to his wife who had a bit of an unsure expression on her face.
"Looks like we got a decision Ro." She didn't respond for a moment, then smiled to him.
"Alright." She said going and getting one of the other beds and putting it next to the one that Logan was on.
"I'll get a blanket." Evan said as he exited the infirmary and went down the hall to his room, coming back with a pillow and blanket, and one of his little brothers' favorite toys.
"Buddy!" the little boy squealed happy at his little wolf plushy. Evan brought it and the other things to him, and set up his makeshift bed.
"Whatcha doin'?"
"Making you a bed."
"But I'm not sleepy!"
"You will be… sooner 'r later kid." Logan said looking to him.
"But I'm not." He protested, his Dad smiled to him.
"Yeah, I know kido." He said looking at him smiling.
A while later little Ayotunde's bed had been set up, and he was sitting in there, proudly watching over his Dad. Ororo smiled at him admiring how mature he already was, even though he was only 4 years old. He watched over his parents refusing to leave for anything. It had been about a half hour since he'd had the vaccine, though obedient to Hank about laying there for however long it would take for it to take affect he was becoming self-conscious about being inactive so long.
It was very different, the switcharoo from him taking care of his friends and family to them taking care of him. He was becoming a little uncomfortable with how out of place he felt laying there. He looked at Ororo, and their son, then thought of something. He started shifting himself as he prepared to sit up.
"No Daddy!" Ayotunde said almost launching himself off of his little seat, he continued rising until he felt some pressure on his chest, he looked to the owner of the hand that had just been laid on his chest firmly.
"Logan…" She said with a concerned look on her face.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm hungry Ro… a man's gotta eat."
"I can bring you some food, you don't have to get up." He smiled to her warmly lifting himself to a sitting position despite her resistance.
"The truth is… I'm not use to getting pampered like this." She smiled back to him rubbing his chest softly.
"It's not exactly pampering. You were hurt, and we are doing everything we can to keep you well." Logan opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted.
"What's pampering?" a small voice asked from behind him, looking back the little guy had a curious face on him. His parents had to be warmed at least slightly by his question.
"It means someone's taking care of you." His Dad filled him in on the unknown word.
"And that they make sure that you have everything that you need when you need it… whether you like it or not." Ororo put in, looking to her husband while saying the last portion of the sentence. Logan gave a bit of a guilty look upon her statement.
"I would gladly let you do… most of the things that you normally do daily if you were truly alright. But now… I can't."
"Cause ya want me to stay healthy?"
"Yes." At her conversation with him about it, he lowered himself down to the bed again deciding not to worry her, or their kids. Her smile warmed a bit after he yielded to her, letting her judgement be the right call for today.
Present Moment:
Opening his eyes he looked around, Ororo was laying next to him on their temporary bed for the moment, he could just barely see the clock out of the corner of his eye. It read 7:18 am. He moved his arm to put it around his wife, then turned slightly, everything was still hurting, but it wasn't as bad as it had been before. He wasn't convulsing anymore, neither did he feel like he was being set ablaze with hellfire. He pulled her closer to him, his arm started to hurt with that simple act, this made him sad. This loving act that had been so common between them was suddenly almost challenging, he didn't let that thought hinder his mind though, he refused to.
Opening her eyes she saw into his.
"Mornin Darlin." She smiled seeing his face, and bowing her head slightly so that their foreheads touched.
"Good morning my love." She said back to him tenderly.
"How do you feel?" She asked after a moment of silence, he smiled to her.
"Still hurting, but not as bad." She was sad at the first words that came from him, but she was glad that it wasn't as bad as it had been the previous couple of days. Not wanting to dwell on the subject at the moment, she decided to change it.
"I see that the kids have all gone down to eat breakfast." She announced after observing the fact of their solitude in the room.
"Little Ayo's gone too huh…" Logan asked matter of factly. Looking over to where he was the past night she confirmed it.
"I guess he decided to give me a turn." She said peacefully, he gave her an unsure look trying to figure out what she meant.
"Looking after you my Dear Logan." He chuckled realizing what she meant.
"Hm, yeah…"
They were surprised when their kids came back into the room long with Hank a couple minutes later, all except for the Doctor having full plates of food, or half full anyway.
"Hey Mom, Dad." Jessie greeted them as she led the rest of the pack into the room. They were a little confused to see them all coming in like this, each one had his or her plate with them.
"What's goin' on… Ray and Bobby decide to take over the table again?" Logan asked sarcastically, Ororo laughed at his statement remembering when that happened the last time.
"I hope not!" Evan said loudly remembering what that was like.
"Heh, yeah… we really don't need someone acting like that again." Jessie added as she came further into the room and sat down on one of the chairs.
"Hehe!" Kendall laughed at the memory.
"Thankfully no…" Hank said as he came into the room behind them.
"The kids just didn't want you two to have to eat alone that's all." He carried two plates of food with him as well, then gave one to each of them, they were a little surprised at this blessing but thankful.
"Thank you Hank." Ororo said smiling,
"Yeah." Logan added right after her.
"You're welcome, but I think that the kids are the ones you should thank the most… without their knowing of your menu I'm not sure I'd be able to find something you like."
"Hank, I'm sure you would've, you have very good taste." She said again lifting his spirit a bit. The kids soon had to leave for school leaving the adults to themselves.
