It had been 3 months since that horrible night, Logan was pretty much back to normal except for the fact that his healing factor wasn't working anymore which would usually be a huge deficit to him, but he'd grown to live with it. Being unimmune to everything was a change, a big stretch for him. He didn't heal from cuts or even bruises. It was a huge blow to his pride.
Going from being the most invulnerable member of the team to just another mutant was pretty humbling. He tried his best to hide it, but the truth is he was scared. For himself and his family, and though he'd be nervous about his reputation at times that didn't matter to him now. If one of his enemies found out about his weak state right now he might not even be able to defend his loved ones... He'd already found out how weak he was now.
A couple weeks ago:
He had decided that he would do one of his usual danger room sessions, he wasn't worried about himself, he was the best anyway and he wouldn't need his healing factor because he did this all the time. But someone wasn't having it, namely Ororo...
They were on their way to a danger room session with the kids when suddenly she pulled him aside.
"Logan… I know that you want to uphold your status as the Wolverine, but… there are other things that are more important now." He gave her a sideways look unsure of what she was trying to say, yet at the same time knew exactly where she was heading.
"Yeah." He said looking to the ground between them.
"Logan, I know you're not all the way better. You're recovering… but you're not."
"What do ya mean?" She looked sad.
"I saw you last night, when you thought I was asleep… you were so tired."
"I was asleep before that ya know."
"Yes, but… you looked worse than before. I saw you in that hospital bed, I was there the whole time, don't think I didn't notice your condition then."
"What do ya mean?" She put a hand to her head trying to control her emotions.
"You're getting weaker Logan. I know that you want to continue the way it use to be, but you can't."
"Oh really?" He said in a playful tone trying to lighten her mood, it didn't really work, she was serious, and he knew it.
"Logan." She said in her classic I'm not happy with your last comment expression.
"If something was to happen… I." Her face started to fall as she spoke.
"I don't think I could handle it."
"I know…" He said back, she looked at him with an expression that signaled that tears would come soon if something didn't stop them. He touched her shoulder pulling her close to him in a hug, she put her face into the crook of his neck resting it there, he rubbed her back softly as she released her tears. His grip tightened on her as he nuzzled her shoulder gently.
They didn't move from there until a few moments later when Scott came down the hall looking for them. Appearing around the corner he stopped, looking as if he was intruding on something. Hearing him walk through the hall Logan looked up to him in a well, move along kind of look and signaled him that they'd be there in a moment. With that Scott nodded slightly and turned back to go down the hall to the rest of the team again, the two held each other for a few more minutes.
When they pulled apart there was something that concerned him in her eyes. Fear… she never had that look, it was almost trembling fear. She saw something in his eyes as well. It was like a looming cloud, like a darkness that was threatening to show its face, she prayed not… she hoped fearsomely, that it would never show itself.
He went into it like he would normally, Scott, Jean and the rest of the team listened as he told them how it was going to go. When the session was finally in progress they handled it like it was any other session because in reality it was. Everything went smoothly till Rogue found herself between a rock and a hard place when she turned and found herself staring one of the lasers straight on. Before she could move it shot at her, she went to jump but tripped on her pant leg. When she didn't get shot she looked back in front of her.
"Oh no... Oh no!" Her expression went from worry to shock then horror as she looked back to the man in front of her who was on the ground holding his left side of his chest.
"L-Logan?!" He turned back to her a moment later, a myriad of emotions on his face the most prominent one being anger as usual.
"GO! GO!" He yelled at her, she snapped out of it a second later getting up, she looked at the area that he was holding.
It was shot through the fabric of his suit, she couldn't really see anything else below that though,
"KID!" He yelled to her as she refocused on her surroundings. She sensed something to her left, her eyes turned in the direction of the sound, there was a big robotic arm of the simulated sentinel headed her direction at breakneck speed, she ducked down low barely avoiding its strike.
"Rogue pay attention! Don't get distracted!" Scott barked over their commlinks.
"Yeah, heard." She said a bit annoyed, they kept running as everyone fought the monstrous machine. Beast flung himself high in the air as Jean and Kurt distracted the thing, the bulky blue mutant balled himself up and hurled down hard and fast onto the creatures shoulder damaging it significantly and causing the machine to become off balance.
Storm and Jean worked together, Jean creating a forcefield around the being and Storm making lightning volt through the robots form this way and that for a whole minute. By the end of the minute the machine was short circuited and fell to the ground.
"Nice work guys." Scott smiled as he gave his verdict.
"Where's Logan?" Ororo asked suddenly scared for her mate, the others started looking around for him. Kitty started to run through the rubble in the room. The two elder women went up in the air again looking from above.
"She'll find him Storm, it'll be ok."
"I don't want her to have to find him! I want to see him out with everyone else!" She snapped back. Jean looked at her sadly, she knew how it felt to wonder if your mate's hurt or not, just like when Scott was kidnapped by Mystique and didn't have his visor.
There was debris flying around the room in a small tornado, seeing this Forge who was in the control room had to ask.
"What's going on in there guys?"
"We lost Logan." Jean replied on the commlink.
"WHAT?!" He asked shocked,
"Over here!" Kitty yelled, before she could do anything she was lifted with a strong gust of wind carrying her to the corner of the room. The rest of them looked on as she flung the rubble here and there with the wind then herself landing there and digging through it with her own hands.
Her face lost color as she saw him. He was paler than usual, she grabbed his wrist, his pulse was still there, but it was weaker. Instantly she called Hank over, she pulled her hand away to start clearing things off him, she looked at it. There was a thick red liquid that covered her hand and she could see it pooling beneath him. She started hauling the things off him like they weighed nothing at all.
"Oh my God man!" The blue mutant exclaimed as he saw his teammate.
"Get him to the lab!" She barked, he paused as he analyzed his friends state.
"Hold on Ororo I need to make sure he's movable." The look on her face was dire as he checked him.
"Kurt, grab a gurney from the med bay!"
"On it!" The young German responded as he ported away. Ororo was kneeling beside him by now, her right hand on his arm and the other on the side of his face.
"I'm so sorry my love... You will be fine, I promise you." The others were saddened as well.
It wasn't very long before he was taken to the medical room for Hank to do some work on him. He'd lost a lot of blood and needed a donation, when it was mentioned there was no need for a request as everyone was happy to offer up their blood to the man who was their longtime friend and protector.
In the room Ororo sat by his side, she wasn't alone, their children had found out about what happened and they were all very concerned for their father. It was very hard for them to see him like that, especially his wife and oldest son and daughter. He had an IV in his arm and was hooked up to the heart monitor, as he laid there on the bed still out cold from the blow he received.
Hank came in the room a moment later carrying a bag with a clear substance in it, he connected it to the stand that the IV was on, then hooked it up.
"Is daddy gonna be ok?" Grace asked the blue mutant, he looked down to the girl and smiled.
"Your dad will be ok kido, you'll see." Hank responded.
"What happened?" Evan asked looking at Hank, the blue mutant looked at him then his mom. he knew she was trying to be the strong woman, the immovable anchor they all knew for all of them, but he could see that she was faltering. She sighed at the stress of all this and Hank took that as his answer.
"Your dad had an accident in the danger room..." That was of course the obvious answer, Evan turned to look at him. This couldn't be happening... Yeah sure he'd been in the infirmary a couple months ago, but he was better now, right?... Jessie went over to her mom and wrapped her arms around her, feeling the same things as she did, Evan joined her a moment later.
It was about a half hour later when he woke up coughing,
"Dad!" Jessie ran to his side split second,
"Uncle Hank he's waking up!" Evan called, he kept coughing a few more times, the Doctor got there in a few seconds, he was still coughing slightly.
"Here." the mutant said bringing a cup of water to him which he drank. He looked around a moment later, seeing where he was he moved to get up and grunted the next moment.
"Easy man, you got hurt pretty bad in there, you need to take it easy." Hank's words were met with an irritated glare,
"I'm fine furball." He said and tried to move to get up,
"Whoa stay still Logan, we had to sew you up from your wounds, if you move like this you might undo them!" He was pushed away a second later with Logan's arm as he went to get up.
"LOGAN!" He looked to his right as he heard the booming voice of his wife, seeing her just in time for him to be lifted off the bed by a gust of wind. He wasn't flung, nor was he carried somewhere, he just hung there in the air right above the bed. Confused he looked at her frowning, her eyes were white, face was almost... scared... She didn't scare easily.
"Listen to him!" She ordered him, he looked back at her, then Evan and Jessica behind her. They looked at him confused, like they weren't sure what he was going to do next. He didn't want them to see him down like this, frankly; it was embarrassing. Having people who are supposed to look up to you not be able to because you're not who you were before hurt, especially when it was people you loved, like your kids.
He knew that he couldn't ignore his mates order, when she took this tone it was something that he couldn't just put off, he'd regret it later, he always had before, whether it was on a mission or at home. He frowned subconsciously making a pouty face at her, she frowned back.
"We're trying to help you man." Hank said grabbing his arm, Logan snatched it away the next moment growling low at him,
"I don't need your help!" The blue man looked to the woman who in turn looked sad at him, they both knew what it was like to be in that position, it was hard, they eventually got him to calm down finally.
Things were bumpy after that...
He was getting weaker day by day. He didn't want anyone to notice this though… he was the toughest guy on the block, and he didn't want anyone to think anything less of him. He especially didn't want the word that his healing factor was currently inactive to get out to any of his or their enemies. But on the other hand, Ororo and their kids. He didn't know how to let them know about it, if he was supposed to tell them.
They were all very important to him, more than anything in his whole life, and that's saying something, he knew that he was very important to them as well, especially Ororo. If worse came to worse he didn't want to admit his current state, but he didn't want anything worse than what was happening to come as a surprise. He had a feeling that she already knew what was happening.
A little while after he'd gotten out of the infirmary one of their children got all excited and wanted to give a flying welcome back to regular life pounce, but as he was in midair his momentum was slowed so much that when he landed it was as if someone had very gently put him down, though he still landed where he was aiming for.
Logan looked to Ororo when their son was flying, or more like floating through the air, and saw that her eyes were white, and she looked very focused. "Heh, ya didn't have to do that Darlin'." He said to her upon taking hold of his son, she just looked at him, a bit of a concerned look on her face. Logan didn't exactly know what she was trying to tell him then, but it felt reassuring.
