Evan walked down the hall to get his little sister Kendall who was running from her doctor appointment. She didn't have her powers yet like her older siblings so collecting her would be easy. He could hear her breathing under the stairs a few feet away, he went around to where she was and sat next to her, she looked up seeing him and scooted a bit closer to the wall.
"What's up sis?" He asked looking to her,
"I'm scared." She said not moving her gaze from her hands, she then snuggled up to him and he put his arm around her traying to give her whatever comfort he could.
"I know you are, but it won't be very long. All you'll feel is just a prick and yeah it'll hurt for a moment, but after that it'll be all over, and you won't have to deal with it anymore."
"But I don't need a shot, I got healing!" She said loudly,
"But you don't have that yet, only me and Jessie have that right now." Evan countered, the little girl shifted in his arm.
"No, I have it!" She exclaimed again,
"Not yet, that's why you need this shot."
"Nooo!" She said squirming out of his grasp and weaving through the small space to get out without him catching her, then ran off. He knew there was no use chasing her as she was very fast, so fast in fact that they wondered sometimes if she had a slightly different muntant ability of speed that manifested early.
Evan went away to the office to tell Hank that she got away again, but when he got to the office he was surprised to see her there with their dad, though it shouldn't have surprised him because right now she was his biggest fan. She hugged his leg hiding her face in his pantleg. Logan reached down picking her up and holding her.
"Ya ready kiddo?" She shook her head making a small "mm-mm." sound, he looked down to her knowing exactly how she felt.
"Hey, you're gonna be fine kido." The girl looked up to her father with a questioning look on her face,
"Besides if your uncle Hank here had anything bad to give ya I think we both know how that'll end."
"You'd fuck him up!" She said exuberantly, Hank's expression turned to shock as he didn't expect those words out of her mouth, Logan looked wide eyed at his daughter then to the mutant beside him who quickly raised his hands in a 'leave me out of this' gesture.
"Who taught you to say that?" He asked
"You did daddy." She said honestly, he suddenly found himself between a rock and a hard place realizing his lack of care for his language was probably going to get him in the doghouse that night if his wife ever found out about this. He scratched the side of his head thinking of how to handle this.
"Heh, well just don't tell your mom about that ok? She might just fuck me up if she finds out..." He said to her, she smiled to him.
"Yeah, your momma will kick your daddy's butt into oblivion." the little girl started laughing over that, the scene playing out in her head being something modern comedy dreamed about.
After some more laughter and tears they came out of the office with the vaccination behind them, Kendall soon went to go play with some of her friends while her dad went to talk to the Professor about something that had been on his mind.
He went up to the office and walked in knowing that the younger man knew he was there.
"Hello Logan." Charles greeted him,
"Hey Chuck." The wolverine greeted back a look of melancholy on his face, but this time it was more than usual, Xavier knew some of what was on his mind, he could sense it. He was worried.
"What's on your mind Logan?" He asked, the other man was silent for the next few moments pacing, then stopped and faced him.
"I aint got much time left Charles... I can feel it." He cut to the chase, the other man's expression grew more serious than he'd seen it in a while.
"Yes... I know." the other man replied, Logan plopped into the chair that was on the right side of the table.
He was silent again for the next few minutes just thinking, his thoughts were loud, no one could usually read Logan's mind because of how many mental barriers that had been put in place there through his life. However this time he let the man do his handywork on him as talking about himself and death was never something he thought he'd have to delve into.
"Have you talked to Ororo about it yet?" The Wolverine gave the other man a look that gave him his answer.
"It's better that you let her know than if you don't and she's not ready when your time comes." Logan shook his head to the other man.
"I don't know if I can do that Chuck."
"We both know it'll hurt, but it'll be worse if she's not ready for it-"
"She'll never be ready Charles... neither will I... Chuck, me an' 'Roro, we got something special. Somethin' I never thought I could have... we'll never be ready to part ways."
Charles could see something on Logan that he didn't see often... raw unadulterated emotion, the love he held for his family, the pain of having to put them through this, and the fear of what was going to happen to all of them including him when he was gone.
"She already knows, I've seen it in her face."
"I see."
"What do I do?" He asked looking at the man unsure, Charles looked back at him understanding what came next.
Meanwhile
in the garden Jean and Ororo worked in the soil, some of the old plants had lived their life and needed to be cycled out so new ones could be planted. Jean was pulling out the last three while Ororo was planting some of the others on the other side of the greenhouse. Jean and Ororo would usually use this time to talk about certain girly subjects, but instead the wind rider remained silent most of the time. Jean understood that she was going through a lot with Logan's condition, but even though Storm was a very strong woman the redhead still worried about her knowing that she never expected to go through this.
"Storm." Jean asked as she threw the last dead plant away.
"Yes Jean?" The other woman asked still focusing on the project before her.
"Are you ok?" She asked the older woman, part of her wanted to answer with her womanly pride that had held them all up through all these years, the other part of her wanted to let it all fall out and drop the tough girl act.
"No, not really." She knew that there was not much use hiding something from Jean since she was telepathic and very perceptive besides that.
"It might help to talk about it, you know woman to woman." She knew it might not help as much as the other woman thought but she couldn't go through this alone anymore. She turned to face the redhead, Jean's expression softened as she saw the lone tear start to run down the dark skinned woman's face.
"Hey, come here." said the younger woman opening her arms and stepping toward her elder, Ororo didn't resist when Jean's arms wrapped around her in a warm embrace, she hugged back, the rain started falling, thunder drummed away in the sky and lightning flashed here and there as tears slid down her face and painful sobs escaped her lungs. The telepath stroked her hair and back as she cried in her arms.
"It's going to be ok Ororo, you'll see." Jean said doing her best to comfort her.
"I want to believe that... with all my heart... but, I feel like it's not going to be..." Storm said between sniffs and sobs.
"How do you know that? Logan's been through many things before, he'll get through this you both will, and it'll make you stronger than ever before." This didn't have it's desired effect as the other woman just kept sobbing as before. A minute later they separated, Jean took her hand leading her to a bench to sit and talk.
"I know you just want to make things better Jean, and I thank you for that... but ever since the last time Logan and I went out on a mission together I had a feeling, as if... our time together was... coming to a close." Jean's expression grew sadder at this news, she'd felt something similar, as if he was drifting away from them ever so slowly.
"I can't live with that Jean. If I lose Logan... I don't know if I'll be able to go on." She said honestly, Jean nodded understanding her friend.
"I understand..." She said not sure what to tell her next, she'd felt something the last few days as well, something like a resting sorrow that was there to take something from them.
I might update this chapter later, anyway, please R&R as always :)
