Chapter 8 – The beginning of the fall

Esdeath left the room, and for the first time since waking up in this place, she felt more confused than ever about her feelings. Of course, she was aware that it would not be simple to subdue Levi, but from her vast experiences, there was no one you could not subdue in the end. She hadn't wished to immobilize and then hit him so roughly that he lost consciousness, but Levi still didn't understand that it belonged to her.

After kissing him, his stare was so disturbed and full of hatred, and when he threatened to destroy her as soon as he had the opportunity, she found no other option at the moment. She could have killed him, of course, but she didn't. That was in her opinion a true devotion of affection and altruism on her part, by leaving him alive after he had threatened her.

-One day you will realize that you are the luckiest man... you will be with me, whether you like it or not, she murmured, as a sinister grin formed on her face, otherwise, I'm going to destroy this world, and you with it as well...

She had to stop when she heard abrupt footsteps in the hallway. So she went back into the room, sneaking in just like a cat, checking it again to make sure nothing betrayed what had just occurred a few hours earlier. There was no evidence of ice, and he was precisely where she had put him.

Esdeath felt a bizarre sensation as she stared at Levi. After she had left him unconscious, she tried to focus, using a vast amount of her power to bring him with her back into her world. This one was influencing Levi considerably, and she had an odd feeling that something disastrous was about to take place sooner or later. Something that would take him away from her ... That drove her even crazier. This world harmed both of them, and although her powers had returned, she didn't understand why she couldn't go back where they both belonged, now that she had found him.

She heard a knock on the door. The person behind it attempted to force the door handle a few times, but when she was unsuccessful, she started knocking harder.

-Levi, are you there? Erwin needs to see you urgently!

Esdeath knelt beside him. Levi was leaning still against the chair he had been sitting in when Esdeath woke up. When he was going to recover, she was aware that he would try to eliminate her for sure, but the fact that no one knew what she was truly capable of, would put him in a circumstance even more troublesome. Only the Titans were seen as the biggest threat here, and those with powers like her were non-existent apparently.

- We are going to have so much fun, Levi, although it is a pity that I cannot ravage you just now, and then kill all of your comrades, while you watch, powerless to do anything. She got up and walked to the door. This insistent knocking had begun to infuriate her. Opening the door, she found Hange, who widened her eyes.

-Esdeath! Didn't expect to see you well already!

- Do you think I am like one of these weak soldiers that need to rest a month in bed after a battle? Hange attempted to smile and ignore Esdeath's remark, but then caught a glimpse of Levi's figure on the chair. He didn't appear to move at all.

- Is captain Levi alright? she tried to enter, but Esdeath blocked her way into the room.

- Captain Levi was probably exhausted. It's better to just let him rest for now. - Really? I remember that when he went to check on you, he didn't appear to be too tired, you know? He was impatient to have a discussion with you, as soon as you woke up.

Hange gave her a fake smile. Esdeath did the same. Oh, this woman realized something, she wasn't as foolish as Esdeath believed.

- He was already asleep when I woke up. But I'm convinced there was nothing significant that couldn't be a postponement. Didn't he tell you the motive why he wanted to speak to me? Hange tried to read this woman's intentions. Nothing on her face betrayed the fact that she was telling the truth or that she was lying. She was calm, but there was still something strange about her. Their tense discussion only finished up when a young soldier ran to them and informed Hange that she, Levi, and another person Esdeath didn't know as yet, Mike, were urgently expected to see Erwin.

- Esdeath, I think it's a good idea to come as well. As Captain Levi needs rest and as you are also a member of the team, you should join us. Hange was hoping that she was going to agree, as she didn't like the idea of Levi being only with Esdeath. She didn't know why, but she felt it was better for him to be alone, than with her. Esdeath peeked at Levi, who didn't appear to be regaining his consciousness too soon, then shut the door fast before Hange could glance at him again. She couldn't kill her yet, but if that woman was going to create trouble or worse, to get between her and her Levi, she would certainly perish as if she was never born.

- I see. In this case, Esdeath is more than welcome to join us. Hange clarified the situation to Erwin about why Levi couldn't be present, avoiding going into too many details given the fact that the atmosphere was already uneasy, and Erwin seemed even more thoughtful than usual.

-I'll get straight to the point. Wall Maria had fallen and the Titans had managed to enter the territory ...

- That's absurd Erwin! How did that happen? That wall resisted for a hundred years and now it had unexpectedly fallen!? Hange got up from a small couch and clenched her fists. Erwin paused, giving her time to calm down. Hange took her seat back and waited for him to finish the sentence.

- The Titan that initiated the attack was at least 60 meters ...

He was looking at all of them now to see their reactions.

- After that titan destroyed the wall, and several titans infiltrated into the Wall Maria, some of the survivors claim to have seen creatures flying from the sky and devouring both humans and titans. That information was of interest to Esdeath.

- Creatures from the sky?! This is an aberration, Erwin! People were panicking, as the Titans were everywhere eating their friends, their families... they must have imagined them, added Mike, his tone deceiving the uneasiness in his voice. -That is reasonable, but if this turns out to be true, what are we going to do about it? Hange asked, wondering if there was even an answer for this.

- At the moment, we need to be more concerned about the Titans and finding a solution to regain Wall Maria. That should be sufficient...

- Your strategy is weak for someone with such knowledge. Esdeath was bored by this urgent meeting. She was already amazed at herself that she didn't turn them into ice till now.

- The soldiers you people trained can't even be called soldiers, and so far, all your plans have failed...

"Why did he follow his orders till now?! Levi should have known better who he needs to follow and that is only me!"

- I would like to know how you plan to retake that wall and if these creatures are real, how do you plan to destroy them as well? Erwin remained silent for a few seconds.

- What makes you so certain that there can be other creatures except for Titans, Esdeath? You have lived in this world till now, did you manage to see something more horrible than a Titan? Esdeath just looked at him blankly.

- Of course not. As you said, I lived here my whole life. What else could I have possibly seen except Titans?
