They'd stayed at Missouri's house until Tyler was well enough to travel, and while recovering Tyler and her laptop had almost been inseparable. Dean suspected Cas and Benny knew what she was doing, but she didn't tell anyone else what was going on. He hadn't had a chance to confront her about the watch either, but he wasn't going to wait much longer.
Sam was still suspicious of the vampire, but he kept his thoughts and worries mostly to himself, because he didn't want to upset the order of things. Tyler and Castiel weren't at full strength yet, and they seemed to enjoy Benny's company. That didn't mean that Sam had to trust him though; he didn't have a reason. All he knew about the vampire was that he happened to be friendly – towards Tyler and Castiel at least – and that he helped getting them out of Purgatory. Would he have helped them if she hadn't promised to take him back to earth? Sam wasn't so sure.
He watched Tyler and Benny bickering in the kitchen, while Castiel sat with Bobby and Missouri sat at the table. Dean had gone out for a walk. Sam knew something was bothering Dean, but his brother hadn't buckled under the pressure he'd applied, and Sam had given up on trying. For now. The sound of the front door opening and closing announced Dean's arrival.
Dean walked up behind Sam, at the same moment Tyler and Benny walked into the living room. Tyler surveyed the room to make sure everyone was present, then cleared her throat. She had everyone's attention immediately.
"Although I've enjoyed your mothering, Missouri, I'm growing restless, and it's time for me to move on. I assume you'll be glad to be rid of me and the uninvited guests I brought with me," Tyler said with a grin.
"Well," said Missouri, "I would like to sleep in my own bed again."
"I guessed as much," Tyler replied. "So...I bought a house."
A stunned silence fell, but Dean saw that this wasn't a surprise to either Cas or Benny. More secrets?
"You bought a house?" Sam echoed. "How?"
Tyler shrugged, non-committally, "I have my resources."
"Resources?" Sam said. "When you had to work three jobs before?"
"I didn't say I wanted to dive into these resources. Just that I had to," Tyler responded. "I was never made for living out of hotel rooms. I need a home base. A home. You forget I was never a full-time hunter." She paused for a second. "And Benny needs somewhere he can readjust to life on earth where he won't be judged."
Those words were specifically directed at Sam, and Dean saw his eyes narrow. The atmosphere in the room changed.
"Look, I'm not saying I'm not going to hunt anymore, and you're always welcome at my place," Tyler continued. "But I need some me time, so I can recharge."
Dean frowned but Bobby spoke before he could. "I get it. Purgatory's not a nice place. Need a ride?"
"Yes, please," she replied. "Don't worry about furniture, got that covered as well. Benny can paint the walls if need be."
"What?" the vampire said.
"How else are you going to earn your keep?"
"Sexual favours?"
"Yeah...no thanks. You just stick to cooking, Benny."
Suddenly Cas chimed in as well. "Would you happen to have a spare room?"
Everyone turned to look at the angel.
"You want to live with us?" Tyler asked. She glanced over at Dean, and their eyes met. "But what about-"
"I also need some me time," Cas said as he interrupted her. "I have never painted walls before, but I'm assuming that's not hard. Unless you don't want me there?"
"Well," said Benny with a ghost of a smile. Tyler punched him in the shoulder, and replied, "You're welcome to stay with us, Castiel."
Before Dean could react to the situation, suddenly Castiel, whom he'd worried about for months, Tyler, whom he had worried about for days were taking a different road than he'd expected. He didn't really know what he'd been expecting, but not this. What the hell is going on? While Tyler was in Purgatory, he'd imagined her coming back with Cas, and the four of them continuing to hunt. He could understand their need for rest, and he could understand Tyler's need to get away from hunting for a while. What he couldn't understand was why he (and Sam) were suddenly kept at a distance. There was something they weren't telling him.
He felt the weight of Tyler's watch in his pocket, and the many questions he had rose up again, but he clamped his jaws tightly shut. If he were to ask them here, he would get no answers. She would deflect. As Bobby got up and told the others to pack, Dean left his spot near his brother and walked out the door again. He needed to think.
Dean stared at the grass beneath his feet, when his thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. Assuming they belonged to Sam, he didn't turn around. Then Tyler's voice rang out.
"You okay? You were quiet in there."
"A lot to take in," Dean answered as he turned to look her in the eyes.
"Yeah...sorry about that. Didn't mean to spring it on you guys so suddenly."
"Since you're springing new information on me anyways," Dean said. "Might as well tell me what this is all about." He took her watch out of his pocket. Tyler's face became a mask.
"It's my watch," she replied.
"It's more than a watch."
"Is it?" she countered. Dean sighed.
"Tyler, don't. I know what it does and why you use it."
"Really? And what is it you think you know?" Tyler asked, while trying to grab the watch out of his hand. He held it out of her reach.
"I know that it keeps you awake. And I know that isn't healthy," he simply said. Tyler snorted but said nothing.
"Are we going to be adults about this, or what?" Dean needled her. "Because I can do this all day. Got nowhere to go."
"So I don't like to sleep. How is that any of your business?" Tyler's voice had become sharp, and low. Dangerous. She was getting angry.
"And here I thought we were friends," Dean replied, putting the watch back into his pocket.
"Friends don't need to know everything about each other," Tyler spat. "Shall I ask you about your time in Hell?"
"I would gladly tell you about it," Dean answered. "But that's different."
"And how do you know that?"
"Because that was Hell."
Tyler grimaced. Dean frowned. She wasn't acting at all like herself. The mention of Hell especially triggered something in her. Purgatory could be considered a kind of hell, I suppose. Tyler held out her hand.
"Give me back my watch, Dean. Just accept that this is something I don't want to talk about. Not to you. Not to anyone."
"You know you can talk to us, right?"
"Dean! I said I'm not having this conversation," Tyler threw her hands into air. "There's things I don't share with you. With or without a reason. And that's my right."
Dean took the watch out of his pocket again, and slowly handed it to her. "And it's my right not to accept that. But whatever. If you're not willing to talk, I'm not going to force you. Just...promise me you'll not wear it."
The look on Tyler's face was pained. "I can't promise you that."
"Then I guess it's a good thing you're moving house and getting some rest. Because I can't work with someone who doesn't trust me."
"Dean, don't be like this."
"See you later, Tyler," Dean turned and walked back to the house. Tyler stared at his back, then put on the watch and sighed. Perhaps some time away from the Winchesters would be good, after all. Things were getting complicated. Too many secrets.
Sam watched Dean come in, but his greeting never left his lips. Dean's face was like thunder. He stomped upstairs, and for a second Sam thought about not following him. But he knew that something was up. He went upstairs. There he found his brother furiously packing his things.
"Where are we going?" he asked Dean. Dean didn't answer.
"Dean!"
"What?"
"Where are we going?"
"Don't know. Don't care. Just need to get away from here."
"I thought we were going to help the others move," Sam said. Dean threw the filled bag to the ground. "They don't need our help."
"Okay, what's going on? You're acting weird!" Sam grabbed Dean by the shoulders, forcing his brother to look him in the eye.
"Nothing's going on, Sam. I'm just goddamn tired and I don't feel like arguing. Are you gonna pack, or what? I'm leaving within ten minutes." With those words Dean grabbed his bag, and went downstairs. Sam groaned. This day is giving me a headache.
