Sam was behind the wheel of the Impala, driving towards their motel. Dean lay stretched out on the backseat, fast asleep. Dean was exhausted, Sam knew. He'd worked himself to the bone from dawn till dusk from the moment they left Missouri's place, and that was three months ago. Three months with limited contact from Tyler, and with a few phone calls from Cas whenever his minutes allowed it. From what Sam could gather, the house was pretty much finished, interior and exterior, and everyone had settled in fine.
Benny was slowly acclimatising to being back in the world and Tyler had found a guy working at a slaughterhouse willing to sell them pig and cow blood. Benny was well on his way to become what most vampires would call a 'vegetarian'. Both Tyler and Cas were recovering nicely, and Sam had asked what the angel planned to do. Dean had said Cas didn't have a definite plan just yet, but he was certain Cas wanted to make sure Heaven was all in order. When Sam had asked about Tyler's plans, whether she was going to pick up hunting again, Dean had shut him down.
Sam sighed. Since they left Missouri's place Dean had been angry and terse, and Sam was sure it had something to do with Tyler's announcing she had bought a house and was planning to stop hunting for a while. He'd seen how his brother looked at Tyler sometimes, when she was focused on something else, and Sam knew that under the surface many emotions were boiling. He'd known from the beginning that there was a mutual attraction between the two, but neither of them had acted on it - as far as he knew. Something had happened between them, something that had caused Dean to make the walls he'd erected around him even higher.
Tyler had got both of them to trust her so easily, but her sudden distance from them had hurt his brother. And frankly, it hurt him too. There was something Tyler wasn't sharing with them, and it was eating Dean up inside. Sam chewed on his bottom lip, looked at Dean through the rear view mirror, then made a decision. They weren't getting anywhere with this case, and they needed another pair of eyes on the information they'd accumulated.
Tyler hummed to herself as she cleaned her truck on the porch of her new house. She hadn't expected it to feel like a home as quickly as it did, but perhaps she had Cas and Benny to thank for that. Without their presence the house would've felt much emptier.
"Hey," it sounded from behind, and Tyler turned around to see Benny smiling at her.
"Hey yourself," she replied. "Come to help?"
"Came to watch," Benny said. Tyler grinned, turned back as if to continue cleaning her truck, then threw the wet sponge at Benny. It hit him square in the face and she burst out in laughter.
"You're gonna pay for that!" Benny said with a wild smile. He grabbed the bucket of water by her feet.
"Wow, wow, wait a minute," said Tyler as she raised her hands in a conciliatory manner. "Let's not overreact now."
Benny tried to empty the bucket over her head, but she jumped aside. The water hit Cas instead. He'd walked out behind the truck and when Tyler jumped, he'd walked forwards. Right into the path of the soapy water. Both Tyler and Benny covered their mouths with hands, fearing the angel's anger.
Then Castiel reached for the hose, and the others ran.
Dean sat up in the back of the car, and stretched. He blinked a couple of times, shook his head, then frowned. They weren't anywhere near the motel. In fact, he didn't recognise their surroundings at all.
"Sam," he growled. "Where the hell are we?"
Sam didn't say anything as they pulled up in front of a terracotta-coloured house. Dean looked out the window; what he saw there put his stomach in a knot. Castiel was chasing a fleeing Tyler and Benny with a hose, spraying water everywhere. Their laughter almost felt like a slap in the face. Suddenly the vampire grabbed Tyler, lifted her up and used her as a human shield against Castiel's hose. Tyler was immediately drenched. When he put her down, he had to run from her. Dean could hear her call Benny a traitor, while Castiel was bent over, laughing his ass off.
"Why did you bring me here, Sam?" Dean asked his younger brother. Sam turned around to face him, then replied, "Because whatever happened between you two, you need to fix it. Besides, we could use her eyes on the case." With those words Sam got out of the Impala. Dean took a minute, then got out too. Tyler turned towards them, and an unidentifiable look crossed her face quickly.
"Hi," she said. "Long time no see. Please, come in."
