Day 65: Oathday the 22nd, Neth, 4707

The day started out with Savah and I getting up together. We quickly decided that I would take Bailey out while she got dressed. Bailey was fairly obliging. I did my normal sweep of her dog house to make sure that Bailey wouldn't get killed by some lurking menace, and Bailey accompanied me for it. I went back inside and headed upstairs. Savah was already dressed and setting up some breakfast. I got dressed hurriedly and joined her in our common room.

Oren, Arika, and Savah were all around the table, eating breakfast. I sat down with everyone and asked what everyone had planned for the day. Oren and Arika both had farmland inspection duty. They'd be riding down on their bikes to visit the people down there and to follow up on any dangers that might be reported. Savah had another day in her shop. I noted that Veronica and I had set up our receiver yesterday, and would probably work on the transmitter today.

Oren asked if he could take the radio with him, and I told him that it was a good idea. I got the radio and handed it over to him. I gave both him and Arika a brief description on how it works. After a few minutes, they had the general idea down and headed out on their day. Savah looked at me oddly and asked if instant communication was as big a thing back where I was from. I told her that everyone had phones where I was from, and that they could use them to contact almost anyone at the drop of a hat. Having the ability to call for backup in an emergency situation is vital, and that is even without having goblins or ghouls to worry about.

Savah nodded sagely, and added that it would be good to be able to call in an issue with the giants, the Sandpoint Devil, or one of the local dragons if they acted up or were attacking. I stammered, replying with a question that there were devils and dragons in this world. I asked how people remained alive with all of these things out to get them. Savah smiled and said that it was mostly because of people like me and my group, who would go out of their way to protect towns like this, and dragons only attacked when they were in that kind of mood. She added that there were some dragons that were good, and other creatures that were good that helped to try to defend towns and the like.

I thanked her for telling me all of this, and helped her get her shore opened up and ready to go. It seemed like the buzz about the grand reopening of her storefront had died down. Oh well, you can't sell everyone in the town a suit of plate overnight. Once I got into my workshop, Veronica noted that she had made a large amount of coil and was preparing just like I had seen on that You-tube series. A spark gap transmitter set up to test and get the frequency in correct, followed up by some testing, then we can work on converting it over to a voice signal. Or maybe I just teach everyone Morse Code, whichever works better.

I set about working on another of the shock batons for the Lord-Mayor. I knew that I would never make a profit making the items for him at the price that was agreed to, but it gets me in good with the local aristocracy and maybe that will be enough for me to make my way in this crazy world. My mind kept drifting back to the thought of dragons, giants, and devils. Obviously the square cube law was thrown right out the window here on this realm. Probably due to all of the ambient magic in the area. I concentrated for a few seconds and turned on my ability to see magical auras. I looked over the equipment that I worked with.

None of the supplies that were enchanted to be of a better quality had a magical aura about them, but my armor, my pistol, my rifle, and my machete all were glowing. This was to say nothing of my clothes, which were all illuminated with an aura of magic, as well as the rings I wore and other items about me. The rock that Vaeren had enchanted with his constant heat spell emitted a magical aura as well. It seems like the underlying rules about magic were that there are no underlying rules. I mean, somethings are more difficult to accomplish than others, like have an item continually illuminate an area is just as difficult as having a rock of a certain type constantly heat the same area. However, the continual illumination required the sacrifice of gemstones, while the heat version did not. Very odd.

There was a knock on my workshop door that broke me out of my work on the shock baton. It was Dame Rebekah, and she was alone. I let her in and she asked me what the issue was that I had paged her about. I had to think back for a moment before I told her that Jasper had reported to me that there were bandits that were using inside information to attack his shipments to Magnimar and that he would appreciate it if we could tag along with his next shipment to see if we could get stop them and take their head person captive for justice to be administered.

Dame Rebekah asked if I had asked for a reward of any kind for this, and I told her that I had not. I told her that I thought of Cyrdak and Jasper as both good, upstanding members of the community and that someone betraying their trust like that was an affront to what good people should strive for. Dame Rebekah smiled and said that there might just be hope for me yet. She told me that she would be glad to go along with this trip and that having Jonathan and Faunra along as well would be good to ensure that we could take on whatever the bandits had to offer. She then asked me if this was all. I thought for a seconds and asked her if she knew anything about a "Sandpoint Devil".

Dame Rebekah thought for a minute and said that she never paid much attention to the local legends of the area, unless she was needed to dispatch a local horror of some kind. Dame Rebekah said that Faunra might be the best person to talk to. I thanked her and asked her if she thought that we were the protectors of this community. Dame Rebekah told me that she had not really thought about it like this, but it did seem like we would be this town's main line of defense against anything like this. I thanked her for her assessment and told her that I was grateful for her advice. Dame Rebekah smiled and said that she didn't really have worries, but it was good to have reinforcement of the evidence.

Dame Rebekah hung around for a little while longer, giving me some advice on the form of the stun batons to ensure that it would be sufficient for combat use. I asked her if she had any advice about fighting devils, dragons, or giants, and Dame Rebekah told me again that Faunra would be the best person to ask for it, as she had studied most of those things. I wished her well on her way, and she noted that she had seen omens that the next few days would be momentous for us. I thought about it and told her that I would do a bit of my own divination from my old world before I went to bed tonight to see if I get any hints. Dame Rebekah nodded and left to go back to her pseudo-pegasi.

I got up and went to Savah's storefront to ask what she wanted for lunch. Savah welcomed me, noting that the day had been rather much as slow as a normal day. I told her that I had hoped that the bump in her sales would have lasted longer, but now she could go back to her normal prices. Savah nodded and said that she had already decided to do that after yesterday. Savah continued with telling me that she would love one of my sandwiches. I told her that I would whip one up and headed upstairs.

I headed upstairs and started work on the sandwich when I heard the radio chime up. I stopped what I was doing and headed out to the patio. Oren keyed up his radio and told me that they were at the edge of the patrol area and were just checking in to see if the radio worked this far. I waited for him to stop talking before I keyed up my radio and responded that I could hear him clearly. Oren told me that he was lad and that Arika and him would be spending the day checking with all of the farmers and get back to me when they were on their way back home.

I confirmed his message and ended with over. I went back to making the sandwiches. I rolled the sliced meat as I always do, and layered them with cheese and everything else. It was amazing how little I was missing the joys of fast food. The Barghest was as good of a burger joint as I needed, the Hagfish was a good dive and seafood place, and for more exotic cuisine I could try The Rusty Dragon. I could take in a show whenever I wanted at Cyrdak's Theater, and could go get a good book from the Curious Goblin. Honestly, this place had everything that I could really want outside of the home. All in this little town.

I brought the food down to Savah, and she was in my workshop talking to Veronica. Veronica wasn't talking back, but was nodding or shaking her head in response to the questions. I cleared my throat and told Savah that I had food available and she bid me to come down and eat in the workshop. We went to a mostly clear table and Savah asked me if I thought that I would be able to make a difference here. I pondered it a bit while I took a bit to eat. I finished that bite and told her that I knew that I would, as long as I continued on my path. I told her that the school had been approved, and as such, I could teach people the way to think to get science to flourish. That was the most important thing, I continued, that people know the scientific method. That was the true building block to science. Everything else is just guessing and throwing darts.

Savah enjoyed her food while I had my mini-rant. She asked how we could get this going faster. I told her that it was a little bit amusing, in that we have the same problem now that I had when I still thought that I should head back to my old world, the need for money. Savah nodded and said that this seemed to be the way of the world. I agreed and said that I figured that once I had established myself, I could stock money away to try and set things up better. Savah nodded, and offered an alternative that I could just go slay a dragon. My eyes nearly bulged out of my skull and I said that I had no intention of ever hunting a dragon.

Savah laughed with me and we finished our meals. I got everything collected to take upstairs at the end of my workday before we would head out. I worked some more on the shock baton, with Veronica helping me a bit. All things considered, it took me all day with Veronica only assisting towards the end, but we now had another shock baton. Veronica had spent the first half of her day making the windings for that transmitter, so we could give that a trial sometime in the future. Honestly, I could pass the messages off to Veronica Telepathically and she could try each level to see the transmitter signal.

I packed up the workshop, knowing that it would take a good four days to fully charge up the batteries that I used to make these items. Knowing that this severely decreases my output of these, I need to get that generator set up, but that will require a trip to Magnimar, which won't be until the 29th. I need to find a way around the power requirements. I was shaken from my thoughts by Savah, who reminded me that I had a group of people who were waiting for the next chapter of the story.

I took everything upstairs and Savah was waiting for me when I came back downstairs. We went over to the garage and got on my bike. We let Bailey back into the house before locking up and heading over the Tanner Bridge to the rest of Sandpoint. We took the road down to The Rusty Dragon and dropped the bike off at The Goblin Squash Stables. Daviren was a bit amused by the bike as always, and said that he might eventually end up wanting one of these, if only because it wouldn't be fearful of the goblins when he had to run them down. I told him that once the workshop got expanded, I could possibly take on new orders.

Daviren nodded and wished me good luck on my next story. Savah and I made our way to The Rusty Dragon. The stage was set up in advance, with the screens already propped up along the stage. I walked Savah to our booth and then went on to the stage. I walked behind one of the screens before starting up my prestidigitation ability. I updated the screens as they were last when I finished last night. I put my sounds up and sat down at the storyteller stool. People were already seated and ready for me to begin. I asked the audience what they remembered about last time, and they told me some good details.

I thanked them for their attention and continued the story with The Dark Knight. I did my best to bring forth the sobering mania of the Joker. It wasn't my worst work by far, but I still don't think I could pull it off as well as Heath or Jack. By the end of this edition, I had a lot of questions that I had to field at the end. I answered them as best I could without giving away the plot to the next night's story. Savah was ready to head out after I had taken pictures of the screens and put them away.

It wasn't until we were half way back that I noted that I had not seen Ameiko at all that night. I asked Savah about it after we got home and she told me that Ameiko had dropped by for a minute during the story time, but didn't want to bring any attention away from my performance. I nodded and said that it was a good thought. I asked Savah if she had heard anything come in from Oren or Arika while we were at the Rusty Dragon, and she told me that they had called in saying that they would be returning about an hour into my story.

We made it back to the house without any issues and locked up the garage. Oren and Arika's bikes were there already. Savah and I went upstairs and decompressed from the day. We got ready and headed in to bed, to get recharged to start over again the next day.
