Chapter 6: Snoggletog

This is Berk, boasting the kind of balmy, fun-in-the-sun climate that will give you frostbite on your spleen. The one upside is our annual holiday. We call it Snoggletog. Why we chose such a stupid name remains a mystery. But with the war long over, and dragons living among us, this year's Snoggletog promises to be one to remember.

Henna had just rolled over in bed when she felt her bed shake. Getting out of bed, she walked over to the window to see Toothless on the roof of the main part of the house. "Hasn't Hiccup woken up yet, big guy?!" She called out, smiling. He shook his head and jumped on the roof again, "Honestly, Hiccup. I'm in a separate building and I could feel that from over here."

"Well, good morning, Mr. Bossy!" Hiccup called out as he came around the side. Toothless smiled and shook with a chortle, making Hiccup copy him with a grin.

"About time!" Henna called out. "He shook me awake."

"Sorry! I guess my body is still healing. I feel like I need to sleep all the time now."

"It's understandable." She smirked, "It must be a relief, now that you and Toothless are practically twins. I wonder if I should feel left out."

"Oh, hardy har-har."

Hiccup yawned and walked forward, still rubbing his eyes, "Do you always have to wake me up so early to go flying-" Hiccup's still new metal foot slips on the ice, but Toothless catches him.

"Stupid leg." He looked down, stretching his left leg, "Oh, thanks buddy, I'm okay."

"Nice catch Toothless!" Henna called down, "Guess he's still not used to being a real Viking yet?"

"Hey!" Hiccup looked up, "Dad doesn't have any prosthetics on him."

"Yeah, well, he's Stoick."

Hiccup paused at that, "Good point." He rubbed Toothless on the head, "Yeah, we'll go flying."

Toothless smiles and burps in Hiccup's face. "Eww, eww, what? Eww! Argh! Toothless." He looked up as Henna laughed and frowned, "Just wait until its your Dragon's turn to do that to you."

"Good thing about my Dragon. She's a Tidal Class Dragon. The water is constantly rinsing out her mouth."

1-2-3-4-5

Henna went down to the beach and smiled as a beautiful dragon in shades of teal, pale pink and sea-foam green flew out and landed next to her. "Hey there, beautiful."

She rubbed the female dragon's muzzle and smiled, "You know, you need a name. Something befitting a Sea Queen." She pondered for a moment, "A Tidal Class dragon that flies. Well, it looks more like dancing. That's it. I'll call you Shimmer Myst. Shimmer for short. Do you like that?" The newly named dragon reared her leg and nodded in happiness.

1-2-3-4-5

Gobber stood in front of the Great Hall, eyeing the decorations as they were hung with a critical glare. "How about here?" a woman called, holding a festive shield up to the wall. The Gronkle she was riding growled in approval.

The blacksmith, however, had a different opinion. "A little more to the right!" he called. "Yes, that's it… a little more… perfect!"

Satisfied, the woman hung the shield just over the door and flew off to get some more decorations. "A little picky, aren't you Gobber?" Henna asked as she walked up with Shimmer, "I mean, it's just decorations."

"Nothing is too good for this year's celebrations." Stoick said as he came down the steps. He slapped Gobber on the shoulder, looking at the Great Hall with approval, "You're all doing a fine job!" He turned around and headed for town square with Gobber and his daughter. "Did you finally come up with a name for her?"

"Shimmer Myst."

"I like it. Befitting a beautiful lady like her." They glanced around at all the dragons helping the Viking decorate, "Dragons spending the winter holidays with Vikings." He chuckled, "Imagine what our fathers would say."

"They'd probably tell us we've gone mad." Gobber joked.

"And locked you up until you decided to start be proper Vikings again." Henna smiled as the two men laughed. They faced the crowd that had gathered around the wooden, green-painted tree in the center of the square. "Not bad."

"You've all done well in preparing the village for Snoggletog," Stoick boomed. "And I'd never thought I'd see the day where dragons and Vikings would celebrate the winter holidays together, but here we are!"

The crowd cheered happily. A soft dragon moan penetrated the joyful sounds and everyone went silent, listening as the moans grew closer. Stoick furrowed his brow in confusion. "What in Odin's name?"

Everyone looked up at the sky, where dozens of dragons were flying overhead. The dragons of Berk observed their fellow dragon-kind for a moment before their instincts kicked in. Astrid jumped in surprise and concern as Stormfly took to the air, following the flock. "Stormfly, wait!"

Snotlout watched in panic as his Monstrous Nightmare flew off, leaving him dangling from the edge of the roof. "Hookfang, what are you doing?"

Fishlegs glanced frantically at the departing dragons before widening his eyes. "Oh no, Meatlug!" he whispered, racing off to find his dragon and hoping it wasn't too late.

Henna looked on in concern as Shimmer was the only one that didn't leave.

The Vikings started yelling in worry as all their dragons left, joining the flock above. Astrid stared after them and swallowed thickly. "Where's Hiccup?"

1-2-3-4-5

Henna watched her brother fly in on Toothless as the last of dragons too off into the air. Toothless landed near Astrid, who quickly ran up to them. "Hiccup, what's going on?"

As he dismounted, Hiccup was bombarded by the other Vikings with questions.

"Do you know where they're going?"

"Will they come back?"

"When will they come back?"

"Just hold on," Hiccup called desperately, trying to process the questions fired at him.

Stoick pushed firmly through the crowd and stood next to his son. "Give the boy a chance to speak!" he ordered. When the Vikings fell silent he turned to Hiccup, "Do you know where all the dragons have gone?"

Hiccup looked over at Henna, helpless, "I don't know."

Everyone mumbled sadly, slowly dispersing. Hiccup watched them go, wishing he had the answers to soothe their worries. Henna glanced over her shoulder, watching as Stormfly flew back, trying to urge Toothless to go with them. But without Hiccup, Toothless was downed. The Nadder looked over at Shimmer, who just stood stubbornly beside her rider.

"Why didn't she follow?" Hiccup asked, following his sister into the Great Hall, "I mean, she doesn't need anyone to fly like Toothless. Why stay?"

"I don't know." She looked around at the downtrodden faces in the Hall, "We just have to believe that they'll be back. That's all."

Hiccup managed a smile as he collapsed onto a wooden bench with Henna and Astrid. They watched as the people of Berk gathered around the fire, muttering among themselves. "Snoggletog is ruined," a Viking moaned sadly.

"They act like this is the worst thing ever." Henna rolled her eyes, "It wasn't that long ago that they were gung-ho about killing dragons."

Stoick stood in the center of the room with a firm expression on his face. "It's not ruined! We're Vikings! We've been perfectly happy celebrating without dragons for generations! And there's no reason we can't do it again! Now we don't know where they've gone off to. But we have to have faith that they'll be back again soon. Am I right?"

"That's right!" Gobber agreed. "We are Vikings! We are tough!" He looked at his arm, "Well, most of the time."

Henna stared at his antlers and bell-covered arm, "Oh, Thor," she burried her face in her hands, trying not to laugh.

Not in the festive mood, the seven teens got up and filed out of the Great Hall. They walked through the dark town square, coloured lanterns casting soft glows in the night. "That was depressing." Ruffnut muttered, kicking at the snowy ground.

"Tell me about it," Astrid sighed. "I was looking forward to spending the holiday with Stormfly."

Fishlegs whistled softly to himself, unaware that he was doing so. Tuffnut arched an eyebrow. "What's making you so happy? Aren't you missing Meatlug?"

The husky boy quickly halted his whistling and put on a sad expression. "Oh, yeah. I miss him so much it hurts, and I worry about his safety every second!" He let out a dramatic sob before he changed behaviour once more. "Well, night!" he called and quickly hurried to his house.

Henna glared in his direction, knowing something was wrong. "He does know that Meatlug is a girl, right?"

The other teens just shrugged, dismissing his behaviour. "I've got an idea! Let's come up with a bunch of new holiday traditions! You know, to bury the sadness!" Astrid suggested.

Her friends groaned in response. She shot Hiccup an expectant look and the boy quickly perked up. "Actually, Astrid might be on to something, guys!"

"Whipped!" Henna coughed into her hand, making Ruff and Snotlout laugh.

Tuffnut frowned at him. "Easy for you to say. Your dragon can't go anywhere without you."

"Really, Tuff?" Henna crossed her arm, "What about her?" She pointed to Shimmer, who was walking next to Toothless, "She can fly on her own. She didn't leave."

"Um…" Tuff trailed off, not having an answer. He just shrugged as he left his sister, Astrid and Snotlout trailing behind them.

"So..."Henna said, breaking the silence, "Suggestions?"

"A few," Hiccup admitted.

"That's good. I'm gonna leave you to that." She patted him on the shoulder as a pink and orange Terror climbed up her leg, "We're going to go clean out the bottom part of my room. Dad said I could turn it into a room of sorts for Shimmer. She's a little bigger than Toothless and my room is smaller than yours. So, Happy Snoggletog to her!" She picked up the Terror and started to walk away, "You need a name too." She thought for a moment, "It's in your coloring." She laughed, "I'm going to call you Sunset."

1-2-3-4-5

She was walking through the village the next morning with Sunset on her shoulder and Shimmer walking beside them. She some kids make a dragon out of snow, moping. Shaking her head, she turned around as Ruffnut, Tuffnut and Snotlout walked toward her.

"Lucky."

"And why is that, Snot Boy?" Henna smiled, "Because my dragon didn't leave or because people actually like me?" The twins started laughing at his look of indignation.

"Guys!"

The group of teens turned to see Astrid hurrying over to them with a tray of mugs and an excited smile on her face. "I came up with a new holiday tradition. Yaknog!"

"Yaknog?" Henna asked, waving a hand in front of her face, "Ew!"

"What's that smell?" Tuffnut wrinkled his nose. "Is that you?" He put a hand on his sister's face and shoved her to the ground.

"It's good!" Astrid insisted.

Tuffnut glanced at the contents of one of the mugs and gagged. "Yeah, if I drink that I'm gonna yak all over the place!"

Astrid scowled. "Maybe you'd like a punch to the face instead?"

"Astrid, it sounds delightful!" Snotlout beamed, "I'd love a mug." He grabbed on a took a big gulp, the new drink almost getting lodged in his throat. He swallowed with a grimace and smiled, "You can really taste the yak!"

"Mmm, yum! What is that?" Fishlegs asked, coming up to them.

Astrid beamed, "Oh! You wanna try some? It's my new traditional drink."

Fishlegs was about to reach for a mug when he noticed Henna and Snotlout shaking their heads frantically behind Astrid's back. Fishlegs quickly backed away, knowing that if Snotlout was telling him not to take it, then it must be really bad.

"Oh... You know…" He coughed, "Ehm... I have... suddenly inexplicably changed my mind."

"Well, you don't know what you're missing." Astrid stuck her nose in the air and smiled, "I bet Hiccup will love this." She took off at a run.

"He'll drink it." Henna chuckled, "But he'll only do it to make Astrid happy. He's not going to want to hurt her feelings."

Ruffnut looks over, noticing Snotlout's discomfort, "Are you crying?"

"I think he is." The others laughed as Snotlout looked like he was hurting, "That bad, huh?"

1-2-3-4-5

Henna ran into the smithy just as Astrid was leaving, "Did he like it?"

"He loved it!" The blonde exclaimed, "I'm gonna go spread some more cheer."

Henna went to the back and saw her brother whipping his tongue off with a rag. "I was running to catch up, hoping to stop you. I knew you would drink it. Snotlout still looks like he's going to crying. He's in a lot of pain."

"It wouldn't have mattered if you got here in time or not." He shook his head, "Blaaaaagghhhhh!" He looked at his sister, "You know me better than anyone. Could you have stopped me from drinking that?"

"Nope. It would have hurt Astrid's feelings."

"Right."

She looked down at what he was working on, "New tail for Toothless?" He nodded, "Nice. He's going to really enjoy getting to fly on his own."

"That's what I'm thinking."

1-2-3-4-5

The next morning, just as Henna was getting up, a commotion was coming from outside. She ran to the window to see Toothless take off, leaving Hiccup on the ground.

"Where's he going?" She called out, looking at her brother.

"No idea." He looked dejected as he watched he friend disappear into the air, "Want to some help Shimmer's room?"

"Love some."

1-2-3-4-5

Three days later, Hiccup is was still worrying about Toothless. Henna had just finished setting up a series of mini platforms, ropes and climbing posts on her wall for Sunset. Shimmer's room downstairs had water and fish dispensers, a wood platform in the back for sleeping and a low post covered in rope for scratching. She tied a hammock to the wall as Shimmer nudged Sunset over, trying to get her little tag-along to try it out. They looked over as a rhythmic banging sounded on her brother's roof. She runs to the window, expecting to see Toothless.

"Morning, son!" She shook her head as she watched her father repairing the roof.

"Oh, hey, Dad."

"Thought it was Toothless, too?" Henna called, garnering their attention.

"Yeah."

"I'm glad you're both up. I was looking for your helmet." Stoick looked down at Hiccup.

"My… my helmet?"

"Well, Odin needs a place to put your goodies." He looked over at his daughter, "I know you have one that you only keep Snoggletog. Do you know where you put it?"

"Yes. Um," She looked down at her brother, who was scratching his neck, "I'll pull it out. It's in a truck downstairs."

"How's Shimmer liking her new room?"

"She loves it. And it's easy for her to get up and down the stairs so she can come and go through the window."

"Good. Good." Stoick looked down as Hiccup started to back up, "Hold on! Hold on. Alright... Come on. What's on your mind? Out with it."

"Oh, well, it's been three days, Dad. I just thought Toothless would be back by now."

"I'm sure he is with the other dragons."

"Yeah? I wish I can be that sure."

Stoick sighed, "Ah, listen…" he looked at Henna, who just shrugged, "I know what it's like to miss someone you love this time of year. But what do we do, when they can't be here for the holiday? We celebrate them! And I imagine that is exactly what Toothless would want you to do. Right?

"You're right."

"Good! Then go get that helmet! We've had enough disappointment around here."

1-2-3-4-5

Henna was walking through town with Astrid, laughing at their last game of discus, "Did you see the look on Snotlout's face?" The twins laughed behind them as Snotlout crossed his arm in a huff.

"See it?" Henna chuckled, "I put it there." Their laughter died fast as Fishleg's dragon Meatlug flew at them, Hiccup hanging on her face, "Hiccup?"

"Where are you going?!" Astrid called out, concerned.

"I have no idea!"

"Meatlug!" Fishlegs ran forward, "What about presents?!" They watched as the duo disappeared from sight.

The teens ran up to the barn to confront Fishlegs, "I can't believe him." The boy lamented.

"YOU can't believe HIM?!" Astrid looked at him as Snotlout shook his head mockingly, "YOU KIDNAPPED YOUR DRAGON!"

"Well, that makes it sound so mean."

"How else are we supposed to make it?" Henna asked, rolling her eyes, "Come on, Fish."

Tuffnut and Ruffnut notice something in Meatlug's nest. "Hey, guys?"

Astrid poked a finger in Fishlegs' chest, "He flew away the second he was unleashed!"

"She." Henna corrected.

"I'm 72% sure he wanted to stay."

"She!"

"GUYS!" Tuff yelled, finally getting their attention. Everyone came over to see what was in the nest.

"Whoa... Meatlug barfed up a pile of rocks." Fishlegs stared.

"You're such an idiot!" Ruff rolled her eyes, "Those aren't rocks, your dragon laid eggs!"

"Again, GIRL!" Henna exclaimed, slapping Fishlegs on the arm.

"Hey, wait! I bet that's why the dragons left." Astrid smiled, "To lay their eggs!"

"Need to update the book." Henna nodded.

Fishlegs looked confused, "But, boy dragons don't lay eggs."

"Yeah, your boy dragon is a girl dragon." Ruff shook her head, exchanging looks of irritation with Henna, "You know, the same thing that she's been telling you from the beginning?"

His eyes widened in surprise, "Okay, that actually explains a few things."

"I thought were intelligent?" Henna asked, slapping him on the arm again.

Astrid got a really excited look on her face, "Hey! Everyone's missing their Dragons, right?"

Snotlout groaned, "Oh, here it comes."

"I've got an idea!" The blonde bent of and tied a ribbon around one of the eggs, "It'll be another new Snoggletog tradition! Oh, this is gonna be so good!

"Yeah, no." Henna backed away, "I've got a room to finish. Count me out."

1-2-3-4-5

Henna, with Sunset back on her shoulder, flew down on Shimmer and landed down next to the other teens, "Did you finish invaded everyone's homes?" She dismounted, "I hope you stayed out of my house."

"All done." Astrid smiled in excitement, "This was such a great idea!"

"Uh-huh!" Fishlegs giggled, dancing in excitement, "Everyone's gonna be so surprised!"

"Yeah, we'll see." Henna muttered as an egg explodes and the baby comes flying out of a house, hitting Fishlegs in the head, "Great idea."

Fishlegs groaned from the ground, "Ow!"

Snotlout laughed, "SURPRISE!"

Ruffnut, Tuffnut and Snotlout coo at the baby Gronckle as Henna just shook her head at Astrid, "Nice new tradition. I'm sure everyone wanted to remodel their houses this year."

Astrid just stared, "The eggs... Explode?"

Houses all around them started exploding, catching on fire.

"THE EGGS EXPLODE!"

A man runs screaming from his home, "I'm sorry! Sorry!" Astrid panicked.

As houses continue to explode everywhere, a fiery baby shoot through the tree in the courtyard, setting it on fire.

"Awesome!"

"Wow!"

"This is your best idea yet!" Snotlout laughed

"What in Thor's name is going on?!" Stoick asked, walking over.

"The eggs explode." Astrid explained dully.

1-2-3-4-5

"Ah, Gobber, this is a disaster."

"Seriously?" Henna crossed her arms, "Come on dad. It's no different than cleaning up after a daily dragon attack."

"She's right. Come on, Stoick, it's that bad."

"Oh, not that bad? The village is destroyed. The dragons have gone and left us. Let's face it – this holiday is a complete- What are these people looking at?"

"What is that?" Henna squinted, trying to see, "A ship?"

"It's Hiccup!" Stoick exclaimed, happy.

Astrid ran over, "And our dragons!"

The Vikings cheered as the ship landed and all the baby came out, "Yeah! Whoo-hoo!"

"MEATLUG!"

"Stormfly! You're back! Oh! And there are babies!"

"Ha ha ha!" Stoick laughed as he gave Hiccup a hug, "Well done, son!"

"Thanks, Dad!" The boy said, gasping for air.

Stoick called out, "Everyone! Grab your dragons! To the Great Hall! We finally have something to celebrate!"

"You were busy." Henna smiled at her brother, "You missed quit the party here."

"What happened to this place?"

"Did you know that dragon eggs explode?"

"I do now. I think that's why they went to Dragon Island. To lay their eggs. They push them in the water so they can come out safely."

"Yeah, we didn't know that. Meatlug left her eggs in her nest when she took off with you. Astrid had the brilliant idea to wrap bows on them and put them in people's houses."

"Oh, wow."

"I'd still prefer it to the yaknog."

"Oh, yeah."

1-2-3-4-5

Back in the great hall, Hiccup and Henna walked around, watching everyone have a great time with their dragons.

"Hiccup." Astrid approached, "I know this must be really hard for you seeing everyone with their dragons. But you really did a wonderful thing. Thank you." She leaned over and kissed him, then pulled him in for a hug.

"Ew! Come on. Is this going to be a regular thing?" Henna covered her eyes, "Cause I could really do with a warning next time."

"Sorry." Hiccup sighed, "Where did Toothless go?"

"I don't know, bro." Henna patted him on the shoulder just as the Great Hall door creaked open. She nudged Astrid and they watched Toothless sneak in.

"Wow, man," The blonde exaggerated, "I wouldn't wanna be you right now! I mean you brought back everyone's dragon except yours!"

"Yeah, you know, this is not helping, at all." She turns him around to see Toothless running excitedly towards him, "Toothless! Hey, bud!" He hugs his friend, happy to finally see him.

"Dad!" Henna called out, getting Stoick's attention, pointed to boy and dragon.

"Bad dragon! Very bad dragon!" Hiccup admonished, pointing at Toothless, "You scared me to death. Don't ever stay away that long again, and what is in your mouth?"

Toothless puts Hiccup's now spit covered helmet on his head, "Ew!" Henna exclaimed, backing away, "That's just gross."

Snotlout, Astrid, Fishlegs, Tuffnut and Ruffnut share their disgust, cringing at the sight.

"Yeah, you found my helmet. What-hey! You found my helmet! That's where you've been? Buddy, thank you! You are amazing!" Hiccup hugs Toothless again, excited.

"Happy Snoggletog!"

1-2-3-4-5

Henna, pulling on her boots, hears Toothless banging on her brother's roof again. " I'm coming, Toothless! Alright, bud, come on down. I was just…" She tilted her when it went silent and walked to the winder. She saw Toothless pushing his old harness and tail at Hiccup, trying to convey a message.

"Toothless, what'd you pull this out for?" Hiccup tried push the gear out of the way, "You don't need this anymore. Come on, let's get going."

Toothless moved away from Hiccup, making Henna smile, "Would you quit fooling around? You have your new tail now."

"I think he's trying to tell you something." Henna called, making her brother look up at her quickly, then turn back to his dragon.

"Toothless?"

Toothless swings his tail around and started hitting it on the ground, breaking the new fin, "Toothless! Stop! What are you doing?"

Toothless pulls up the old gear again, and Henna could see the exact moment when Hiccup realizes Toothless was trying to say. He doesn't want to fly on his own. He liked needing Hiccup to help him fly.

"I think his gift to you is so much better than anything you could have given him." Hiccup nodded at his sister, not having the words to convey his feelings. "Give me a minute. We'll be right down. We could use flight through the chilly air."

Winter in Berk lasts most of the year. It hangs on with both hands and won't let go. And the only real comforts against the cold are those you keep close to your heart.

"Okay, bud, you ready?" Hiccup called as he got ready to take off. Looking over his shoulder, Henna on his left and Astrid on his right. Behind them was the other teens, ready to take to the sky and enjoy the Winter air. "Let's go!"
