Who was I
He spoke her name for the first time just as they reached the well.
"I guess I earned that," She said, not looking at him but down the well.
"Tell me I made the wrong choice,"
"You wish for me to tell you a lie,"
She smiled.
"Will you return?" He asked,
"Can't you see?" She looked at him, and blue eyes met gold. "I can't,"
"Time will bend to your whim," It always had.
She shook her head, her glossy hair shining. "No, not anymore, not with the future unwritten, my choice as the vessel has seal time for me, no going back, no going forward, just here and now." She looked at the trees as they danced lightly in the wind. "The only way I will see the future is to live this life,"
She pushed away from the well. "You must think I am stupid,"
"It was wise,"
She met his gaze and, without looking, waved her hand. He watched as the well disappeared.
"No more false hopes," He heard the sadness to her tone.
"What did it offer you?"
Their eyes met again. "What didn't it offer me, but who am I but who I am, the jewel underestimated me because it didn't know me,"
He could understand that many often presumed to know him.
"Everyone always underestimated me," There was the sadness again.
"It would be wise for them not to make that mistake again,"
She smiled. "Does that include you?"
The truth was, he had long ago quit underestimating her. Hell, she was still a mystery to him, and doing so would have been unwise, and so to that, he offered her a simple "Hn, but do not forget your place,"
He couldn't let her think she could underestimate him with her newfound power.
"Deal," She agreed.
