Princess Mipha's Downfall

Mipha was a healer, not a fighter. As she stood at the main control unit of Divine Beast Vah Ruta, the Lightscale Trident in her hands, she looked down at her home of Zora's Domain one last time. She took a deep breath and faced forward. Then, it appeared. Born out of Malice and Hatred, a shard of Calamity Ganon materialized in front of her. Waterblight Ganon wielded a massive spear and made a horrible noise as it growled and faced her. Gathering her nerve, she brandished the trident, and thrust it at Waterblight. The evil entity retreated as it conjured a block of ice and hurled it at her. Mipha managed to evade, but it still grazed her, leaving her with freezer burn. She gritted her teeth, and put herself on guard. She could hear Ruta bellowing in the background, desperately trying to fight off the Malice slowly overtaking it.

Although the fight had just begun, Mipha knew deep in her heart of hearts that she would be unable to prevail, and so sent out an SOS signal, hoping that someone would hear it and come to her aid. Even as the Malice took over Ruta, Mipha could hear it calling out in defiance of its fate. Desperate, she lunged forward, and managed to score a hit on Waterblight. It howled, more out of annoyance than pain, and focused on her, aiming its laser eye right at her heart. Panic surged through her, but she steeled herself. Hold, hold, HOLD...now! she thought. She leapt out of the way and threw her trident. It impaled the Blight and she raced to grab her trident for another pass, but the Blight slapped her out of the way and she hit the wall, stunned. Waterblight screeched and threw its own spear at her, while yanking the trident out of its body and tossing it aside. She snapped out of her daze and rolled out of the way just in time, only to turn and see several blocks of ice coming at her. Unable to dodge fully this time, Mipha could only cover her face as the ice shattered and sprayed her with cold shards. She winced, looking at the cuts that now dotted her arms and chest. Blood dripped slowly from her wounds, and her whole body hurt. She felt dizzy, and her vision was starting to become blurry. The Blight regarded her with disdain and threw its 'head' back and howled, almost as if it was cackling. Give up now, little Zora. I promise to make your death as painless as possible, it seemed to speak in her mind. But she knew this was Ganon, using the Blight as a vessel of sorts. Mipha had no plans to give up so easily. Though she had promised her father, King Dorephan, that she would come back safely, she would fight this Blight even if it killed her.

It seemed to take otherworldly strength, but Mipha got up and stumbled forward to pick up her trident. As she put her hand on the hilt, Ruta bellowed in what seemed like agony as the beeping of the SOS reverberated loudly throughout the chamber. But now something else was coming through: A different set of beeping. It was almost as if the Malice taking over Vah Ruta was emitting its own signal, though this wasn't a distress call, this one had more sinister undertones. Mipha's eyes widened in horror; the new signal she was hearing was an SAD signal, or 'Search And Destroy.' It seemed as though the Malice was intent on killing her as well. It was moving more quickly now, and actively drowning out her SOS call. Ruta's glowing lights flickered between the healthy blue and the ill purple of the Malice. Abject despair flooded through her as the realization that no one would come sank in, and she let her guard down. Waterblight advanced on her and focused its laser at her heart again. Mipha looked at the red dot over her chest and felt a surge of adrenaline. I cannot give up! Father,Sidon...images of her and her brother together flooded her mind. My people...and Link! They all need me to succeed! This thought gave Mipha energy, if only a small burst.

In a last ditch effort, she charged at Waterblight and threw her trident with all her strength. Unfortunately, Waterblight anticipated the move and dodged, once again slapping her out of the way. Mipha fell and hit the ground with a sickening crunch, her trident far and away from her. She would never reach it now. All her strength depleted, Mipha could only look at the Blight in defeat, while it cackled and focused its laser on her yet again. I'm sorry I couldn't come back, Father. Sidon...you are so brave, and I know we shall meet again someday. Link...if only fate had been different, but I know I will see you again soon...it's all up to you now. Waterblight Ganon's laser fired true, and Mipha's world went black.

The moment Mipha's heart stopped beating, Vah Ruta bellowed louder, its cry filled with despair and sadness as it called out for its lost Pilot, and the Divine Beast itself was consumed by the Malice.

A/N:

I gave the Divine Beasts a degree of sentience such that they are 'bonded' to their pilots and know that something bad is happening to them. I like to believe that they were slightly alive and would respond to their pilots. This idea itself is one I borrowed from my favorite fanfic, 'Pacific Rim: A New Chance' by Elhini Prime.

I hope you read and enjoy this concept!
