Nautilus Plume's new office was bigger than some houses se had lived in. It was large and segmented into different areas with various functions. The one se was sitting in right now had a large cork board with ser name engraved onto it: Nautilus Plume, Director of Quell activities.
The perks were good and the power even better, but there were days when se still felt like a secretary. This was one of them.
"Why don't I get to be Gemini? I am a gemini." Ronan Ward, one of the Capitol's premiere stylists, whined.
"The twins get Gemini." Nautilus answered.
"Isn't that a little on the nose?"
Nautilus agreed with him, but se was working on orders from President Minerva Thornewood herself. Most of the organization was left up to ser, but every once in a while Minerva had a brilliant idea and se had to figure out how to make everything work around the directive. That was what Nautilus truly had a talent for, taking the president's ideas and making them actionable. The Quell itself was a perfect had come up with the idea to reap everyone from one bowl, but she hadn't quite thought of what that would mean logistically. The reapings, the interviews, and even the living arrangements were all organized by gender and district. All of that would need to be revamped before the tributes were even chosen.
It was ultimately a good thing that they had rigged the Quell twist, otherwise Nautilus would have had to plan everything in a matter of months.
"Aside from the fact that you are one, why would you want to be Gemini?" Nautilus asked, "There's not a lot to draw from, design wise."
Ronan grumbled, "I suppose it was just the principle of the thing."
"Taurus is going to be a good challenge for you. Since District Ten is usually cow related I need one of our strongest designers on it so that it doesn't seem repetitive."
Ronan let out a big booming laugh, "You're such a flatterer, Nautilus. Makes you wonder how you're not running the place already."
Nautilus waved a hand around ser new office, "What makes you think I'm not?"
The large man laughed again and stood up, tucking the brightly colored folders Nautilus gave him under his arm. "Fair enough." he said, "I'll get these to the other stylists. Until next time, Plume."
"Until next time, Ward."
The man left, and Nautilus looked up at the clock. Ser meeting with Ronan had gone a little long, which meant that ser next appointment was starting in only a few minutes. Luckily, Hebe Dagnus was known for being chronically late. Se managed to completely clean up ser office by the time the Victor came in.
"Hello Nautilus. I'm really sorry I'm late. Something came up. Someone came up. Actually it's a long story but I brought shortbread." The woman held out a plate of cookies. Nautilus looked at the sweets skeptically before taking one.
"I hope you're not still angry at me Miss Dagnus." Se said. During the last games, Hebe had requested a sponsorship item that Nautilus priced so high no one should have been able to purchase it. Se still didn't know how the woman managed.
"What no." she answered, "You were doing your job. And I was doing mine. All jobs all professional. We're still friends."
Nautilus raised an eyebrow. The words were right, but se had reason to doubt them. Everyone know that Nautilus was close to the President. It was something that se never made any secret of. And Hebe's actions in the last games skirted rather closely to open rebellion. Talk of rebellion was beginning to sweep through the Capitol. A real, true rebellion, not the easily stopped kind President Thornewood was hoping for. And se suspected that Hebe was right in the middle of it. They were not on the same side.
Though perhaps when it came to friendships, that didn't matter as much as people thought it did. At least not until Hebe showed her true colors.
"I'm glad to hear it." Nautilus said, "I know you have a lot of connections, so I wanted to go over our plans for the Hunger Games this year and have you pass the information on to the other Victors. Is that acceptable?"
Hebe smiled. "Of course. Should we begin now?"
And they did.
AN: Well this is an incredibly short prologue. Whatever, prologues are mostly setup for what's to come next anyway. So here we got to meet some more of our Capitol cast! Or re meet, if you've read Desolation. I'm trying to make this easy to read for people who haven't read my other syot, but if any point is confusing please review or PM me and I'll do my best to clear it up. I still need loooooots of tributes, so please consider submitting. Or submit more than once. Or tell your friends. Just give me all the submissions, I love them so much. Anyway, I hope you have a great day!
