Chapter 5
The rest of the first years and a couple second years gave Hermione quite a wide berth after that. They couldn't help but be wary of the obvious power coming from the girl, she had way more power than any first year should have and their first instinct was to observe her from a distance before coming to a decision.
"Draco was trying to subtly make amends with Hermione, he had the feeling she wouldn't be receptive if he outright apologized, as if he would ever apologize regardless of whether or not, he was in the wrong. A Malfoy never apologizes! He had decided that he would join the rest of the first years unspoken agreement to watch Hermione, and by extension Harry before writing to his father. There was no point in bothering Lucius unless he had something of substance to report. After finishing their meals Hermione and Harry rose from the table and followed the rest of the first years, led by what she was told were the 5th year prefects out of the hall and down so many sets of stairs Hermione worried she'd never find her way back to the surface. The male prefect stepped up to a seemingly blank wall and said "Purity" and the wall disappeared.
Hermione grabbed Harry's hand to calm her nerves without noticing the rising blush in his cheeks at her actions. The second they were over the threshold Hermione felt her senses tingle and an overwhelming feeling of rightness settled deep in her bones. She was so lost in these new sensations she almost missed the female prefect signaling to the group to stop and listen.
"Welcome first years to the most ancient and noble house of Slytherin. Up until today we have consisted mostly of pure blood with the occasional half blood thrown in the mix. But today we have Slytherins first muggleborn, Granger step forward" Squaring her shoulders, she made her way to the front of the group to be addressed, she was not going to let these people see any kind of weakness in her.
"Do you realize how rare you are Granger? And how many of us have been brought up to see people of your descent as lower than filth" The male prefect sneered at her. Steeling her nerves Hermione replied, "I am aware that my descent is less than ideal for what you think Slytherin house should represent but I am also the first muggleborn with a familiar bond verified by the deputy headmistress" Hearing this Layla decided to come out and hiss at the room at large. "Also" Hermione continued "I was led to believe that this house values cunning, ambition, and power, despite the fact I am muggleborn I have already proven myself to be the most powerful first year based on your reactions to my abilities, Given the right training am I really someone you'd want to be on the wrong side of? Because my intentions are to be nothing less than the most powerful witch Slytherin has produced in centuries"
During her speech Hermione's voice had grown in power and her hair had begin to fly again, much to the irritation of Layla so the snake decided to give her mistress a subtle squeeze round the neck to bring her back down. "Well, that was certainly… interesting" A deep voice drawled behind the group. Spinning around they were met with a man who Hermione could only describe as "Vampiric"
"First years, I am your head of house Professor Severus Snape, I thought I'd come down here to make sure our muggleborn was being… dealt with accordingly but it seems she is making her place in our… nest, very clear" Addressing the room at large Professor Snape continued "Despite any beliefs any of you may have, I must remind you that outside of this room Slytherin house are united. We do not tolerate one of our own being spoken down too in any way. If you must intervene in more severe measures make sure it cannot be traced back to you" He turned to leave the room but at the entrance said "Make sure you have read pages 1-20" of your first-year potions book before tomorrow. Then he billowed out of the room, his robes flying out behind him.
The rest of the first years made themselves comfortable in the common room and spoke quietly to themselves. Hermione and Harry had gravitated towards each other, Layla had decided to give Hermione's neck a break and made herself comfortable around Harry's neck not taking notice of how the tension in his shoulders seemed to disappear at her touch.
"I've never seen Layla like anyone that much apart from me" Hermione said rubbing her neck and trying to get some form of blood flow through them. "Maybe it's because I seem to be the only other one who can understand her?" Harry asked as he absentmindedly stroked Layla's head.
"Layla why do you like Harry so much" Hermione asked turning quickly around to make sure no one else had overheard her, luckily for them they were too engrossed in their own conversations to notice them. "I'll tell you both one day but not today" Layla hissed smugly before closing her eyes and ending the conversation.
"Well, that's Layla for you, she likes to think she's so mysterious but most of the time it ends up being something obvious, she's kind of mean like that" Hermione said to Harry with a small smile. "Yeah, she seems mean, but I can't help but like her" Harry replied still stroking Layla who by this point was fast asleep. They were so engrossed in watching Layla they didn't notice a couple of older kids making their way over to them." Granger, Potter" A feminine but firm voice said, once again the pair turned around, and both couldn't help but be floored by the girl in front of them. She had long black hair falling to her waist with emerald, green highlights that looked like they had been painted on by the most experienced artist, her skin was pale, and her bright blue eyes looked at them expectantly. "My name is Nyra Parkinson, third year, you may have met my sister Pansy?
Hermione and Harry shrugged noncommittally, neither of them willing to own up to the fact Hermione's snake had wanted to rip Pansy's head off. "I would like to formally apologize on her behalf for her behavior towards you Granger, you too Potter, I respected your speech when Flint tried to bring you down, You didn't lose your temper and held yourself like a true Slytherin, I personally don't believe that someone's blood makes them stronger or weaker than anybody else, But I digress, for your speech you have earned my respect so if anyone gives you trouble you come to me got it?"
"Not wanting to irritate their new ally they nodded quickly and expressed their gratitude. Hermione wasn't worried at all that she'd need it, but Harry was grateful for the extra protection. Scooping Layla back of Harry's shoulders Hermione gave her friend a quick hug before deciding it was time to retire to her room and re read her books for tomorrows classes, she could never be too prepared After all.
Draco, Pansy, Blaise, Crabbe, and Goyle had claimed a quiet corner to discuss their plans for the year, they had all grown up together, so they already had a very close group established. "She's a Mud blood!" Pansy hissed to the group "And we need to put her in her place" She finished resolutely, expecting the others to agree with her. "You already know that only the old families follow that tripe" Blaise said absentmindedly twiddling his wand between his fingers. "That's rich coming from the half-blood" Pansy snapped back folding her arms "For the millionth time Pansy we don't even know if I'm a half-blood, my mums shagged that many blokes we don't know which ones my dad" Blaise replied closing his eyes.
"Why have you never done a paternity potion" Draco asked "I know that Severus could brew you one" "Well Draco dearest" Blaise said smirking "That would take a piece out of the mystery that is Blaise Zabini wouldn't it" This statement earned him a swift pillow to the face, his outraged expression was ruined by the feather floating on his nose causing his friends to laugh which only enraged him more before he also began to chuckle.
"What are we doing about Granger and Potter" Crabbe said quietly, he wasn't a fan of talking much so the fact he had willingly started a conversation had the group quiet for a little while before Draco spoke up "Well me and Pansy were brought up to think mud- muggle-borns are weak and don't deserve magic but she's clearly proven herself to be more powerful than all of us combined, they don't even teach wandless and nonverbal magic until seventh year but she seems to have mastered both before her first year has even started" They all sat back in their seats reflecting on Draco's words when Pansy interjected "So we Ally ourselves with her for now?"
Draco nodded before replying "Technically Blaise will have the easiest time of it, He hasn't done anything wrong to her yet. Me and Pansy have both called her a mud blood and you saw how that went and Crabbe and Goyle were with me when I did it, so Blaise its up to you to forge this alliance, I plan to write to Father soon but we're going to need more information first. There's something so familiar about her but I can't place it for the life of me"
Standing up Blaise turned to his oldest friends and couldn't help but pity them, it was clear they were scared but trying to hide it, and it was even more clear how powerful Granger was. He wasn't sure about Potter, but it was clear Granger cared for him, so he was protected from whatever wrath his friends would bring down on themselves with their beliefs. He loved them but they really needed to get with the times, with Hermione being Slytherins first muggleborn but clearly the most powerful he was interested to see how this years pecking order would turn out. "You're all prats, I'm going to bed"
