Chapter 6

The first week of classes flew by, Hermione earned Slytherin a lot of house points much to the dismay of Ron and the other Gryffindor's. Even Professor Snape couldn't help the smirk as he glanced at the points that she had earned, Slytherin were already well in the lead. Not that he'd ever admit it out loud but he did occasionally sneak into the common room disillusioned to make sure she wasn't being treated too harshly, but much to his surprise the pecking order had already been established and the polite little muggleborn seemed to be at the top. She had already earned the protection of the eldest Parkinson heir and most of the first years gave her small nods as she walked by with Potter.

Potter. Of course the spawn of his nightmares had to be put into his house. He was expecting the youngest Potter to be exactly like his father since he had to look just like him, except his eyes. Snape tried hard to avoid looking at the boy for too long because his eyes were completely his mothers. He was pleasantly surprised to see that the boy had a thirst for knowledge and seemed to genuinely enjoy potions especially.

After dismissing his last class of the day Professor Snape retired to his private rooms and poured himself a generous portion of firewhiskey. The headmaster had tasked him with coming up with a complex riddle that only a genius could solve. For what he had absolutely no idea but then again Dumbledore liked to talk in riddles and he was personally getting tired of it. Downing his glass and shuddering at the burn in his throat got up and started on this damned riddle.

Draco had just finished penning his letter to his father to ask for advice on how to proceed with Hermione. His whole life he had been taught that muggleborns and muggles were filth, thieves of magic and the right thing was for purebloods such as himself to be on top but no matter how hard he worked in his classes he was out-done in everything if not by Hermione, then Harry would somehow best him. To find out the way he had been flying for years was wrong was mortifying especially when Potter had somehow beat him. He was still annoyed that he had stood up for that squib Longbottom and then turned down a place on the Slytherin quidditch team! There was no way he was that humble.

He had been watching Hermione for the first week and had come to the conclusion that there was simply no way that she was muggleborn. She couldn't be that powerful and come from filth...right? Shaking his head Draco left the common room with Crabbe and Goyle flanking him like they always did. They weren't very good for intellectual conversation but they were good muscle in case things got sticky. On his way to the owlery he had to run into something that was guaranteed to ruin anyone's mood. A Weasley. "Oi Malfoy" Ron said storming up to him also being flanked by the squib and someone he didn't recognize. "Did your parents never teach you that it's not polite to speak to your betters like that?" Draco sneered back. "I don't see my betters you don't look like Dumbledore to me snake" Ron yelled at him gifting him with some spit. Wiping his robes across his face Draco pulled out his wand, Crabbe and Goyle following his lead. "You best watch yourself Weasley you don't want to cross a Malfoy, it may be the last thing you ever do"

Ron and his accomplices pulled out their wands in reply causing Draco to laugh at the state of Ron's wand. "Can your family really not afford to get you a new wand? Your core is sticking out, no wonder you're about as gifted as that lump behind you" Ron blushed in shame before saying "Even with a broken wand I could still beat you Malfoy! I challenge you to a wizard's duel" Draco paused. He knew for a fact he could beat Weasley but what was the point in that when he could cause Gryffindor to lose more points? Professor Snape's advice flitted through his mind and Draco knew exactly what he was going to do.

"Fine. Midnight tonight, trophy room, unless you're too scared?" said Draco. Ron didn't even hesitate before replying "Deal, Who's your second?" Since Draco had absolutely no intention of showing up he just said "Goyle" at random "Who's yours?"

"Seamus" Ron replied identifying the boy behind him Draco didn't know studying the boy, a memory surfaced of their first charms class "Ahh so you choose the boy who blew up his feather our first day? I suppose he is the better choice between him and Longbottom" Draco sneered. "Now if you don't mind I've got a letter to post, you know because I could afford an owl" and before Ron could reply, Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle were gone.

On his way to the office he stopped by to see the actual squib of the school, Mr Filch. He then informed him as quickly as he was able that he had overheard Weasley and two other Gryffindor's planning a midnight feast in the trophy room and he felt that it was only right to inform a member of staff. He then got out of there as quickly as possible with his fathers stories of squibs stealing respectable pureblood magic if you were around them too long flying through his head. Draco got to the owlery, tied his letter to his owl and sent her on her way. As he watched her fly away he couldn't help but grin at the thought of all the trouble Weasley was going to get into. Life was good.

The next day at breakfast he was proven right, all of the Gryffindor's were giving Ron the stink eye. News quickly spread through the hall of how Weasley, Longbottom, and Finnigan had managed to lose 50 house points each and were serving a detention with the half giant in the forbidden forest that night. Glancing at the points he was overjoyed to see that Gryffindor were in the negative, Slytherin were ahead by a fair stretch which pleased the blonde immensely, never mind that Granger had gotten most of them, His house was still on top which was all that mattered to him.

Draco wasted no time in informing his friends quietly that he was responsible for the massive point loss their rival house was now facing. Pansy cuddled up to him whispering about how clever he was while Crabbe and Goyle just grunted with what Draco could only assume were pleased looks. He turned to see how Blaise had reacted but was very shocked to see his friend sat with Granger and Potter a bit further down the table. Pushing down his annoyance he decided to just finish his meal and then interrogate Blaise later to see what progress he was making with the alliance.

Layla was one happy snake, Not only had her mistress made a firm friend in the handsome green eyed boy she seemed to be making yet another friend in this handsome boy with dark brown eyes! All their chattering was interfering with her nap time but seeing Hermione so happy and at home Layla decided to not be upset for once.

"So Blaise I get the feeling you're over here for a reason and I'd like to know what it is. Not that I don't appreciate your effort to befriend me and Harry but Slytherins always have a reason for doing things" Hermione said, putting her cutlery down and turning to the boy beside her. "Way to be subtle about it Hermione" Harry snorted while still eating. Hermione couldn't help but worry about him. He was eating like he had never been fed, spoke very rarely and tended to try and make himself as small as possible.

"No its fine, I appreciate the bluntness its actually a rarity around here, then again Hermione, no offense but you are a rarity, not to mention a beauty" Blaise said winking at her, but much to his dismay his charm didn't seem to work on Hermione, most girls tended to fall at his feet when he turned on the charm. "Nice try Blaise but you're avoiding the question" Hermione laughed as she lightly swatted at his arm not noticing Harry flinching behind her.

Holding up his hands Blaise said "Okay okay you caught me, Draco, Pansy, and that lot want to form an alliance with you but feel that they've messed up their chances due to their poor word choices regarding your blood status"

Hermione sat back thoughtfully. She stayed in that position for quite a while before seemingly coming to a conclusion " Blaise if you want to be my friend you are more than welcome to be. None of this Alliance nonsense we're only kids, If the others feel the same way then they only need to apologize and all will be forgiven. I don't hold grudges there's no point, Life's too short"

Blaise was impressed by her reply but worried for his other friends, Hermione really was an oddity, anyone else he knew would hold a grudge for years waiting for an opportune moment to get revenge for any small slight against them but all Hermione wanted was an apology? He thought that this was more than fair but knowing his friends as he did he knew they'd be mortified at the thought of apologizing to anyone, especially to a muggleborn. Turning to look at Hermione he saw the gleam in her eye and that's when it hit him. She knew that they probably wouldn't apologize to her because of the way they were raised but she was still giving them the option, either they go against everything they've been raised their whole lives to believe and say those fateful words or they went against her.

He knew that she knew how powerful she was and that given a few more years training she would only become more formidable, Grinning he held out his hand and said "Hermione, I feel like this is the start of a beautiful friendship" She quickly shook his hand grinning back and they turned back to Harry and started up a conversation about classes. Hermione zoned out when the conversation drifted to quidditch, she couldn't understand how anyone could call that barbaric game a sport!

Okay that's it for chapter 6 guys I hope you enjoyed it! I noticed that my story has been put into a community called "Wipped Harry" which I found quite amusing. But Harry will come into his own eventually trust me, I'm not gonna have him hiding behind Hermione for the whole fic! As always please review and let me know what you think!
