Shortly after lifting off, the Waverider and its remaining staff find themselves in the temporal zone. Spooner went to the kitchen/dining room, where Astra has used the food fabricator for a snack. She commented, "I offered to tell you about his departure."
"I'm not mad about that," Astra uttered. "I know you're being a friend."
Spooner tries to get a good look of her friend's face. Her amiga grande may appear tough-as-nails, but she is protecting a soft center. After she endured her mother's death and a botched exorcism that landed her in the netherworld at age 9, Astra was lost and defenseless from the spiteful Lachesis' control. If it were not for the Legends and Spooner, she'd still be seen as absolutely heartless. Spooner is mostly familiar with this thick-skinned attribute. She herself has cultivated it after her forced and time-consuming estrangement from her mother. Although presuming that you were abducted and operated by aliens as a young girl is an entirely separate situation, the feeling of losing your innocence is all too similar. "Do you want to talk about that back there?"
Astra spiritedly replied, "No." Her tone emerges unsteadily when she added, "I can't talk about it without... doing something I might regret." After she mouthed this, she grabs her bag of pretzels and flees to the armory to practice knife-throwing without even looking at her friend in the eye. If she'd allow her to look in her face, she would start crying. For Astra, that is much worse than lashing out and impulsively casting a spell all at once. Spooner sighs and grabs a bottle of water from the refrigerator before she proceeds to the gym for a workout. Gideon carefully begins unwrapping her present in the library. She finds a card on top of the box. The message is printed in pencil. It reads:
Gideon, here's a little tool for your next adventure. Have fun! Love, Gary.
She places the message in her pocket and the box firmly on the desk. When she pulls the lid off, she is surprised to see what's inside. Zari is conducting a routine check on the mainframe in the server room. Usually, she wouldn't mind being there; but she is now feeling bored. "There is only four of us on the ship," she thought. "We cannot avoid each other for a week." She reaches for her cell phone to text Spooner, Astra, and Gideon, only to remember that neither of them has that. So, she leaves the room and goes to the bridge. Accessing the console, she announced over the speakers, "Meet me in the lab in five minutes."
About five minutes later, they walk in to catch sight on Zari, who is in a confident stance, with the clear dry erase board behind her. She has written "Girls' Vacation" in pink. Under the heading, their names are inscribed in yellow, blue, red and green. "Zari, what is this," Astra inquired with her arms crossed.
"Well, since we are the only members left here, I think it's pointless for us to avoid each other until everyone else returns."
"Even if that is true," Gideon remarked, "who would oversee the Waverider if we leave as well?"
"That is why, dear Gidget, I designed this plan." Zari moves towards one side of the board, posing like Vanna White in front of the puzzle board on Wheel of Fortune. "Balancing out two objectives: looking after the ship and having some fun ourselves." She continues, "For this week, one of us chooses an activity of the day. The activity can be either on the ship or within the timeline."
Astra implored, "Did you forget about the list of rules Sara and Ava left us?"
Zari responded, "No, I haven't. Also, one of the rules stated that we can travel to any era as long as we DON'T alter the timeline. Besides, I'm more inclined for a night in. Anyone care to join me?" Her plan has a certain appeal; that is what they can agree on. In the long term, it might change for the better or worse. For now, it is worth the time.
Spooner relented, "I'm in." Zari writes "Activity Day 1" under her (Spooner's) name. She turns to Astra and Gideon, who have not made their respective decision.
Astra reconsiders for a brief period. She gives her definite answer. "Sign me up." Zari writes "Activity Day 2" beneath her (Astra's) name. Finally, all eyes fall on Gideon; since she is placed in charge, her vote can set the plan in motion or dissolve it. "What do you say, Gideon? Do you want in on this?"
"Well, it does conform to the instilled rules and it would be boring if we carry on resisting any fraternalization." The collective stare from her fellow Legends is prolonged until Gideon ultimately provides her feedback. "I accept this."
Zari jots "Activity Day 3" under the name "Gidget", pleased that her plan has received the green light. She conveys, "So, to commemorate this week, I want to begin with a sleepover here." She quickly observes the blend of instant confusion and angst on Spooner, Astra, and Gideon's faces. "Have any of you been invited to a sleepover or hosted one?"
Astra bluntly recalled, "The last sleepover I went to... it was a long time ago. Slumber parties are not very common in the Underworld."
Spooner jokingly confessed, "One thing the mushroom people certainly didn't mess up about me is my social life."
Gideon tacitly disclosed, "I must inform you, Ms. Tarazi, that my lifespan has depended on the intention of aiding to a time captain prior to my revival as a human."
Zari thoughtfully listens to their individual plights. She retains her assurance as she affirms, "You know what, we are not going to let all of that stand in our way. Just wear your best pajamas and—it's 2:30pm now—come back here at 7:15pm. Leave the rest to me."
