Astra feels better from her emotions regarding Behrad. Her conversation with Gideon provided her with much consolation and reassurance. However, she wishes she can talk more with Spooner. On the one hand, she likes that she and Zari are friends. She nonetheless knows that there's something going on with those two. To be clear, when Astra walked in on them, she only heard Zari not wanting things awkward for Spooner. She thought, "Awkward how?" Recalling Zari's offhand rule in Never Have I Ever, Astra did like not discussing relationships at the time. The more she replayed that in her mind, the more she considered that Spooner is why the rule was craftily enforced.
The next day, Astra is checking the logs of the jumpship. She noticed something different. Someone has used it last night for a short trip... to Odessa, Texas in the year 1925. From reading this alone, she deduced that Spooner went to see her mother. Astra did not want to snitch on her for visiting her mom. So, she erases this from the log without any hesitation. She leaves the hamper to find Spooner. As she marched through the corridors, she unexpectedly and literally bumped into Zari. "Sorry, Zari. I didn't see you," she said.
"It's okay," Zari replied, "you're the person I was looking for."
"What, why?"
"As part of my plan, you choose today's activity." Seeing the eventual comprehension on her comrade's face, she asked, "What do you have in mind?"
"I would like to visit Las Vegas. I heard that one of its nicknames is 'Sin City'. I want to see if it livens up to its name."
"Interesting choice," Zari declared. "Which year do you want to explore?"
"I would say, the early 1930s. We'll go after sundown."
"That sounds like a plan. I need to go to create my outfit." Zari was about to leave, but Astra stops her.
"Have you seen Spooner anywhere?"
"She's in the cargo bay." Following that, she releases her, while she presses forward to the airlock. Astra sees Spooner restocking the ammo and slowly knocks on the door. Alarmed by the sound, Spooner turns towards the door. "Hey, Astra. I haven't seen you for a minute."
"Yeah, I've been busy... sort of."
"So, did you arrange something for today?"
Astra peers at her strangely. "How did you know about that?"
"Zari told me yesterday. She had sorted the sequence of our endeavors in how we voted. She was first, I was second, you're third, and Gideon's last. It's a nifty trick." Astra hides her discontent with an unflappable veneer. Spooner glances at her and silently notices a particular trait. "So, what did you want to say?"
She was about to confront her about her secret call to Odessa. At the last second, she replied, "I... I decided that we all go to Las Vegas in the 30s."
"Cool," she responded. Her tone changes to concern when she inquires, "Are you upset about something?"
"No, why?" She remembers her best friend's powers. "Did you detect something?"
"No, you have a crinkle between your brows. That usually happens when you're upset about something."
"It's nothing. I'm going to check on Gideon." Astra hurriedly exits the room, leaving Spooner confused. She sighs and finishes restocking.
Hours later, everyone is glamorizing herself in her respective quarters. Astra dresses herself in a red evening dress, matching pumps, and her favorite earrings. She applies a bold red color on her lips and mascara on her eyelashes. Her curly hair is parted to the right and let down. Zari, whose hair is styled in a long bob, fashions herself in a slinky yellow evening gown, a necklace, and white T-Strap shoes. Her makeup consists of light violet lipstick, mascara, and green eyeshadow. Gideon dons an olive-green ruffled midi dress, a pair of long hand gloves, and dark brown high-heel sandals. She applies coral lip gloss and eyeshadow. Her hair is rolled into short waves. Spooner is wearing a Shepherd's Check plaid blazer, an eggshell colored wrapover blouse, black pants, and black boots. Her hair is mostly covered with a classic black beret. Unlike her friends, her face is completely fresh.
After they rejoin in the bridge, Astra tells Gideon, "If you're interested in taking a photo, we'll have to do it here. Is that okay?"
"Absolutely." Gideon races for her camera in her quarters. As she retrieves it, she sees the picture of the Legends before their month-long retirement on her desk. She focuses on herself and Gary each forming a heart with their hands. She smiles bittersweetly and departs without looking back.
She returns to the bridge, holding her camera. The women took turns in capturing pictures. Gideon first did one with Astra, Spooner, and Zari. She switches places with the latter for the second photo. They all cramped together for a group photo.
The Waverider landed in Las Vegas in 1933 behind a secluded alley. The city is filled with cars honking in traffic. Lights from buildings shine brightly under the night sky. People on sidewalks are walking or running to their own destinations. Amidst the hustling, Astra leads the others into a nightclub, which caught her eye. Its name was "The Déjà Vu". Although the outside appears decent, the interior looks high-class for its time. The restrooms are adjacent to each other by the entrance. Straight ahead, the bar is moderately small and very open with a door around the corner. The casino room is far on the left. A stage is perched opposite it. The dance floor stands in the middle of them. Hot jazz music is blasting all over the room. Enthralled by this, Zari proposes, "I feel like dancing. Who wants to join me?"
"I'll go," Gideon responded.
Astra touches Spooner's shoulder, asking, "Can we talk?"
Spooner turns to Zari and Gideon and informs them, "You two go on." Zari takes Gideon's hand and the two head to the dance floor. Astra and Spooner can see them as they emerge themselves among the enthusiastic dancing crowd. "What do you talk about?"
Astra doesn't know what she wants to address first: the jumpship or Zari. Peeking at the bar, she decides to gain some Dutch courage. She suggests, "Let's grab a drink first." They move to the bar and sit down. A bartender sees them and hospitably requests what they want to drink. Astra ordered an old-fashioned, and Spooner ordered a bottle of beer. The bartender leaves almost immediately. 15 minutes later, he comes back with their drinks. Astra begins guzzling down.
"Astra, what's going on? You've been acting edgy all day," Spooner remarked, opening the bottle.
Leaving the glass half-full, she answered, "I know you used the jumpship to see your mom." She turns to face her, who is caught off-guard. "I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm just letting you know."
"I had to tell her something... about me." She takes a swig of her beer.
"What is it? You're not sick, are you?"
"No, I'm fine. It's another matter. I wanted to tell you about it too." Spooner takes another drink. "I'm ace."
Astra smirks at her, saying, "Of course, you're an ace."
"No, I mean—" Before she could further explain, Zari and Gideon join them, ordering a ginger ale and a scotch, respectively. Zari has a nostalgic look on her face. "What's up with you?"
"All of this reminds me of Chicago. I hosted a speakeasy in the pocket dimension with everyone's help to aid a friend we met, Eddie. Sara & Ava did a dance performance, and Gary & Nate were guarding the door. Behrad was in the band, playing his guitar."
"What kind of trouble was Eddie in," Astra inquired.
"This mobster Ross Bottoni was holding him for liquor usage." She glanced at Astra, Spooner, and Gideon, who all exchanged a certain thought. "What did I say?"
"Ross Bottoni," Spooner groaned.
Zari slowly remembered that they also were in Chicago, though with a separate party. "Did you all meet him too?"
"While we're in Chicago, we made the acquaintance of Maude Beaumont, a singer who had similarly dangerous ties with him," Gideon disclosed. "Both business and personal."
Zari quickly grasps the underlying context behind the last sentence. "Oh my gosh, that's awful. Is she okay now?"
"Oh, yes. She is currently safe and away from him."
Spooner recalled, "She had to perform this song he wrote. However, while Astra and I helped Maude escape, our Gideon took her place and knocked it out of the ballpark." Gideon smiles proudly at the memory.
"Color me impressed, Gidget. I want to hear that sometime. What was the song's title?"
"'Future Favorite'."
As they talk more about their adventures in Chicago, Astra notices a quartet of fellas leering and strolling in their direction. Three of them are white, and only one is colored. All of them, wearing suits and in their 20s, range in individual heights. They each stand in front of one of the women. The tall, white man has his eyes fixated on Zari. He addresses, "Good evening, ladies. I'm James. These are my chums: Hector, Anthony, and Beverly."
"I'm Zari, and these are my friends: Esperanza, Astra, and Gideon."
Beverly, the average-sized white man, chuckled in an English accent, "Gideon? Never came across a man's name on a woman before."
Gideon innocently retorted, "I'd never met a man sporting a woman's name either."
Spooner hears a sharp, high-pitched sound in her ear. She blocks her mouth from the men's view and whispers to Astra, "I'm getting a weird feeling about these guys. I think we should go."
James continued, "We're wondering if you four ladies want to join us for a private party in our hotel rooms." He persists flashing a big grin at a civilly uninterested Zari.
After Astra relays Spooner's alert to her in a low voice, Zari cautiously replied, "My friends and I don't plan to stay long."
"That's okay. We can still have some fun. How about we each buy you a drink?"
"We already have a drink." Astra displays her glass intentionally. Spooner, Zari, and Gideon follow suit. None of the men seem to care.
Average-sized Anthony moves closer to an uncomfortable Astra. "How about a dance?"
"No, I suggest you back up, unless you want to receive some pain."
Beverly advances to Gideon. "How about you, cutie? Do you still have enough energy for one more dance?"
Gideon politely declined, "No, thank you. By the way, I'm involved with someone else."
He pretends to search for Gary. "Where is he? I don't see him. Either he's a lousy beau for leaving you here or he doesn't exist." This angers Gideon, who uncharacteristically slaps him hard in the face. "What's your problem?"
"Don't ever insult my boyfriend again," she coldly stated.
At the same time, James's mood changes from pleasant to menacing as he grabs Zari's wrist. "Let's go."
"I'm not going anywhere with you."
"Let me be clear, we want to have our fun... with you... now." All at once, the men physically try to separate them, manhandling them each. The short Hector restrains Spooner from behind. She stomps on his foot and knees him in the groin, rendering him incapacitated. As Gideon fends off Beverly, she grabs a bottle and bashes his head with it, leaving him unconscious. Astra channels her pyrokinesis and almost lights the fleeing Anthony on fire.
Earnestly scanning among them, Gideon inquired, "Where's Zari?"
The bartender, who has witnessed the mass altercation, answered, "One of the gentlemen dragged your friend out in the back." He directs the remaining trio to the back exit door past the hall.
When they found her, James struggles in trapping her in his Ford Roadster. He growled, "Get in the car, you tease." Astra, pushing past her mistrust of Zari, begins singing the sleep induction spell. Bewitched by the lullaby, James dozes off and falls asleep on top of Zari. "Get him off me," she pleaded. Gideon and Spooner carefully lift him up and position him in the seat. Zari crawls out of the car, but not before she kicks his leg.
As they are boarding the ship, Astra and Gideon are walking ahead of Spooner and Zari. She strolls close to her. "Are you okay?"
"I'm a bit shaken. If you guys didn't come when you did, he would've done something worse, that creep." She sighs, feeling troubled. "I wonder how the guys are in Wales."
"Wow," Spooner exclaimed. Zari looks at her in confusion. "Not you. I'm getting a wave of emotions: anger, longing, and sadness, the same one from the sleepover." She checks at Astra and Gideon and notices one of them clenching her fist. "It's coming from... Gideon?"
