Paradox Arc:

Chapter 67: Perfect Syzygy

Makoto Yuki

Morning -Rooftop

The rooftop was spreading broader than he had seen in the dream this time. His vision was blurred this time, but he knew the darkened sky and the chasm surrounding the rooftop as if the world was eaten by the void and only this small place stood amidst the emptiness. He needed no reminder regarding the dream; this visit will be his last.

His eyes caught Hamuko leaning by the rail guard not far from the bench where he sat. Dark circles were visible under her eyes from constant weeping. His mp3 player was still hanging by her neck, and she clenched it tightly with one hand while the other hand gripping the rail guard behind her. Her eyes trailed to the floor between them, avoiding his presence. It was the grimmest he had ever seen from her.

Makoto left his bench and approached her slowly. She tilted her head up and sighted him, and he knew agony when he saw it.

"I remembered this place." She said.

Makoto blinked, did it mean... "Our previous visit?"

"Yes," Hamuko left the rail guard behind her and unhanded the mp3 player, "I don't know why I forgot about it, but our visit here, it's as real as the world I'm living."

Makoto widened his eyes in shock, "I always meet a version of you in this place. But now, you're the real one."

"Your Anima talking through me, which of course is part of me," Hamuko replied, strolling towards him, "but with the truth of my world unraveled, I became aware of our previous visits and the Great Seal."

A long silence broke in as stood face to face, despite countless things they wanted to express. Perhaps that was wishful thinking.

"Let's forgo this meeting, for good," Hamuko suddenly said.

"I will not," Makoto quickly replied.

"You need an Anima. You don't need 'me'," Hamuko shook her head, "This isn't love. We're just prisoners of our own psyche."

"And what's wrong with being my Anima? I can be your Animus as much as you want," Makoto grabbed both of her shoulders, which seemed to startle her, "I can't go back. I need our bond to perfect the Universe Arcana, and I... Yes, I can't save my world if you resist this."

"Resist?" Hamuko's eyes suddenly flared with rage. She gripped both his wrists that grabbed her hand forcefully removed it, "You just don't get it, do you?"

The rooftop suddenly cracked, leaving a long hole between them. They removed from each other as the hole widened. He eyed Hamuko who was drifting away at rapid speed, "Hamuko!"

She didn't answer, but she faded from his eyes as she turned away, disappeared into the darkness. He knew then it was the last time they met on the rooftop in the dream.

Aigis

Morning - 31/12/2009 - Iwatodai Dorm, Tatsumi Port Island

"Makoto-kun? What do you mean?" Yukari responded to her question, "I think he just wakes up."

"Did he not... missing since days ago? Hamuko-san said..." Aigis let her words trailed off in confusion. What's going on? Was this some kind of trick?

"Huh? Isn't he always..." Yukari said, but something began to doubt her, "Hmmm... That's strange. I almost feel like he wasn't here yesterday. Though he's always been that way from the start. He didn't talk much these days, and I never saw him with Hamuko together anymore. Did something bad happen between them?"

"I... Understood. I will investigate this matter myself," Aigis nodded, leaving Yukari in her bath, busy preparing herself for school. The archer was the third after Mitsuru and Akihiko to give those reactions. She swore Makoto Yuki wasn't here yesterday. In fact, she still remembered conversing with Hamuko in her room regarding the identity of her leader... Wait, wasn't he always here? She wasn't sure anymore.

She found no comfort resting in her room last night, ignoring her own procedure for daily charging. Many unnecessary data corrupted her memory files. Whatever tampering with her system, there was one statement Aigis knew with a 90 percent chance of possibility: Hamuko Arisato wasn't the true keeper of Death, not originally. It was that boy, except for gender and appearance, resembled the girl almost in every possible way.

Then who is Hamuko Arisato? Her relationship with Makoto Yuki must be more than friends, more than family to the point that not even Aigis was able to distinguish the difference in presence. Death the Appraiser's words echoed in her mind. 'Is it a boy, or a girl ten years ago?'

As she climbed the stairs to the second floor to where Makoto is, she crossed paths with the girl in question herself. According to her research regarding human emotion, humans can cry until their eyes grew red. Did Hamuko Arisato suffer the same thing? Else, why would her eyes grow so red as though she had cried overnight?

"Hamuko-san..." Aigis called out to her. "May I ask you something?"

She didn't react at first. "Ah... Aigis..." Hamuko responded, attempting a smile, horribly, "What is it?"

Aigis asked, but slightly hesitated, "Do you... remembered our conversation yesterday, about Makoto Yuki? I know he is with us, but at the same time, I..."

Hamuko's eyes widened slightly, but it quickly fell back into despair, "Aigis, tell no one of this."

"But-"

"Please." She interrupted, then proceeded to dash to the bathroom on the first floor. Aigis was left dumbfounded by her reaction until she failed to notice someone else watching not far from their spot. Makoto Yuki, still in his casual outfit, greeted Aigis on the second floor. If there was a trace of weeping on Hamuko's face earlier, Makoto's face was much grimmer. His eyes were almost lifeless, like a massive burden or guilt forced upon him.

"Makoto-kun..." Aigis called out. She wasn't sure how to react to Hamuko anymore, now that she knows the girl wasn't the one she needed to protect. But her relationship with Makoto was more complicated than the girl. True, she was protective of him, but not in a way as a machine designed to be for a human. Aigis felt ashamed, realizing her protection should scale further towards the boy than the leader Hamuko. Was he angry? Did he even know about Hamuko and kept its secret? She needed the truth. "Makoto-kun, yesterday..."

The blue-haired boy approached her with a blank expression and suddenly placed one hand on her shoulder. "Why is it always you whom I cannot fully change, no matter which version you are?" He spoke, almost like to himself at first. The second sentence finally referred to her, "Don't tell anyone about your suspicion of me and her."

The same demand as Hamuko. Most of all...

"You knew she was your imposter ten years ago..." Aigis gasped when Makoto released his hand from her shoulder, "Why did you hide her true identity? Is there a purpose behind this conspiracy? I cannot understand."

"It's complicated," he answered sadly, "but trust me. Hamuko is no stranger. Your protectiveness of her and me is natural. I wish I could tell you more, but we need to fight Nyx, and it will all be forgotten in the end."

"In other words, when everyone forgot you yesterday..."

"There is a reason for that." Makoto suddenly chuckled sarcastically, "I can't believe I make you so confused right now. Alright. One day, I promise I'll tell you everything."

Aigis argued no further beyond it.

Hamuko Arisato

Afterschool - Tatsumi Memorial Hospital

She lost control of herself.

Averting her eyes from Makoto today was literally impossible with him sitting next to her in her classroom. Thankfully, she didn't lash out to her curious friends about their tense atmosphere, but making eye contact and reassured them with weak lies that even a kid can see through? Who was she trying to fool?

Nobody here is real. Fake, all of them; copies shaped by the memories of Makoto Yuki, including herself. What's the point of fighting to live, when none of them ever live in the first place? It's incredible how much she loathed herself currently. She's not even herself, but a mimic impersonating the person she gave her heart to. She had nowhere to go.

Which beg the question; why is she here?

The first location that came through her mind was this hospital. Yes, she needed something to push Makoto out of her mind. There's only one person who managed to affect her more than anyone else. Taking a deep breath, she turned to the sleeping figure.

"After all the help you gave me, all the sacrifice you did, I had to throw it all away," Hamuko spoke on her chair, "I don't know what to do anymore. I always thought I love him, and yet the sense of control I had become further away from me. Is this truly my feelings?"

Despite talking for nearly half an hour without response, Hamuko felt exposed from within, baring all emotions she had to the figure on the bed next to her. Shinjiro Aragaki was in a comatose state for nearly two months now, yet it felt longer to her. In truth, she had no idea how to break free of this constant anxiety. She hated herself for envying the bedridden man.

"You'll be free soon," Hamuko muttered, "Very soon..."

She left her room and began her way home. However, despite the connection she had with Makoto decreased since yesterday, it was still strong enough to locate him.

He was here.

True enough, the blue-haired boy was waiting at the front of the hospital's main door, watching her with an almost blank expression. Insufferable. What was there to talk about?

"No," Hamuko walked to the right side, avoiding his path, "I'm not doing this anymore."

"You don't hate me, Hamuko," Makoto hurriedly trailed her to the outside, "I can feel it."

"A broken feeling," Hamuko replied without looking at him, "A broken figment of your mind."

"Anima and Animus is a guide," Makoto tallied faster until he was next to her, "And your guide is telling you ignoring this relationship won't solve anything."

"Of course it doesn't, I don't exist. Ah!"

She suddenly felt her wrist snatched. Makoto was eyeing her with suppressed anger.

"This isn't about me!" Makoto said, "You think I'm not afraid? Do you think I'm not secretly angered with our fates? Don't look so shocked, you know what I always want. "

What he always wanted? She refused to think of it anymore.

"Makoto, release me. Now." Hamuko said, voiced dangerous.

Makoto obviously noticed her cold tone. Makoto slowly removed his hands from her and rested into his pockets. Good grief, he truly did resemble her father... But she never had a father, or parents for that matter.

Hamuko began asking as she rubbed her wrist, "And if you don't complete your social link with me before returning to your world?"

Makoto paused, but it was clear that no answer came to mind from the way he shrugged, "I guess I returned home empty-handed."

Despite being extremely close-mouth regarding the event happening in his world that engineered his mission here, Hamuko realized that the boy was oddly nonchalant regarding the outcome. Obviously, it will be extremely important for him to achieve Universe Arcana, but where did all the concern he had regarding his homeworld gone to?

"But know that I'll risk my world for you," Makoto confessed as if reading her mind.

Then it hit her.

"You're mad," Hamuko muttered, but loud enough for him to hear, "You want to sacrifice your world for me?"

"Only if you refuse," Makoto said. His eyes were terrifyingly confident, "but you can be certain that I won't let my world's need to break us up."

'Are you serious?' She thought. He appeared so... obsessed. Worst of all, she secretly agreed with him. She shared his obsession.

She wanted him to stay here, in this world. If he departs for good, her existence will be worthless.

He was mad, and so was she.

Makoto said nothing when she dashed away. She almost tripped a few times as she ran home. Her hands were trembling.

Aigis

Night - 31/12/2009 - Iwatodai Dorm

The hatred Aigis had for Ryoji Mochizuki still triggered her every time he was within her range. She knew Ryoji was watching her from the side, but he chose to ignore her as the Appraiser briefed the team about the big decision tonight.

Aigis was convinced everyone noticed the tension between Hamuko and Makoto Yuki, but for the first time, she felt a dreadful sense of helplessness towards them. Even after the entire day of processing her mind, she was unable to explain the relationship between the two Wild Card users.

"Well, times up," Ryoji said as he stood from the sofa at the lounge, watched intensely by the member of SEES, "if you would..."

Face sullen, Ryoji eyes both Hamuko and Makoto. Aigis heard him held his breath slightly, "Hamuko Arisato. If you would please."

"I know," Hamuko curved her lips slightly, leaving her seat and she followed after the Appraiser. She gave one last look at them, "Don't worry, I'll be fine."

Makoto grunted quietly after they both left for Hamuko's room. The rest of them didn't leave their place at the lounge. Junpei asked for some light, seeing as someone forgotten to switch on the lamp.

"Okay, now that we're here, out with it," Akihiko suddenly spoke, facing Makoto with a strong glare that would rival a stone, "you and Arisato, what's going on?"

"Nothing." Makoto's answer was swift.

"You barely talk with Hamuko-san anymore," Ken stated, patting Koromaru's head at his side, "and did you see how she looks like today?"

"She was crying this morning. Her eyes were red," Yukari said. Her words earned a few looks from the rest, "What did you do?"

"And you look like grim reaper yourself, dude." Junpei added, "I mean, damn, you looked so hollow out."

Mitsuru, who remained quiet at the side from the start, voiced out, "Whatever argument between you two, I need you to solve it as soon as possible. We don't want you and her emotional stress to affect your combat capabilities."

"I know," Makoto replied weakly. He peeked at the staircase, where Hamuko had gone. Aigis sensed his temperature and heart rate rising. She wanted to speak up, but something held her mouth.

"Man, is she still making a decision?" Junpei asked, "I'm getting tense."

Akihiko fake-coughed lightly, "Calm down, she knows what she's doing."

"You too, Makoto-kun," Fuuka said, watching Makoto from her seat. "What's wrong?"

"I just..." Makoto kept his stares at the staircase with an anxious expression, "...something's not right. It's not supposed to be that long. All she had to do is-"

Makoto suddenly leaped from his seat to everyone's surprise. Horror filled his face.

"She's summoning her persona..."

Hamuko Arisato

Night - Iwatodai Dorm

"So if you kill me now," Ryoji continued to reason with her in her room, "All will be forgotten. I am not human. Do not empathize with me."

Hamuko lifted her chin and studied the figure hovering in front of her. Ryoji's 'Death' form resembled Thanatos so much, she almost mistook him as her summoning. The Appraiser's words were convincing, but that wasn't the subject that shaken her will.

"Hamuko-san, all you have to do is-"

"Why did you give him the ring?"

He paused at her interruption. Slowly, Hamuko removed the ring on her finger and shown it to the Appraiser. Silence filled in the room until Ryoji reassumed his human form.

"...Are you angry with me?" Ryoji asked, glancing at his own identical ring on his finger.

"Depends." She clenched the ring in her fist and eyed the man, "How long have you known about me and Makoto?"

"..." Despite attempting to look away from her, he answered regardless, "Ever since the night I fought Aigis, I'm sure both of us, who bore witness to the past of Makoto Yuki, had seen a fragment of those memories."

"So you know 'what' I am." Hamuko replied, "that I'm a being that shouldn't exist. Is that..." She glanced at the ring in her palm. "Is that why you allow Makoto to give this to me? Because you see me the same as yours, creatures created by mankind? You want to give me a reminder like this ring?"

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you." Ryoji answered guiltily, but sudden determination filled his voice, "But that is all the more reason you need to kill me. Even if Makoto Yuki was able to seal away Nyx in his world, he still died in the end. The matter of his resurrection still baffles me, but what of this world? Even if you seal Nyx, there is no salvation for this world, just like his memories stopped dead."

For once, Hamuko didn't argue his reasoning. Ryoji continued.

"Of course, since this world is made of his memories, it makes no difference about whether or not you take my offer. Either way, there's no way out for this world. Isn't it better to be ignorant for once about the truth?"

He was right. What's the point of protecting this world if none of it was real? Her friends, her home, her memories; all of them were fakes.

"Ryoji, please assume your true form."

When he saw the Evoker in her hand, Ryoji finally smiled submittingly. He took out the identical ring from his finger and landed it on her palm. The drop of the ring on her own ring made a clicking sound that sounded loud enough to break the tense atmosphere. It was his final gift before he assumed his true form.

"Orpheus."

Crash!

Her persona floated above her, ready to blast the creature away. All she needed was one more command. One Agidyne was enough.

However, as Ryoji waited for her attack, she hesitated. Someone was approaching her room. Her guest was correct, as her door was knocked.

"Hamuko, listen to me!"

She gritted her teeth in frustration. It was him, always had been.

"I know you think there's no point in fighting. I know you think this moment is nothing but an illusion. But...!"

A loud bamming sound slammed the door.

"I just want to be with you! I want you to experience my memories because I want you to understand why I wanted to save you."

Empty promise. And yet, she lowered her Evoker. Ryoji glanced between the door and her as the boy continued.

"Hamuko, what about Shinjiro? You visited him today because you wanted to be convinced, didn't you? You wanted to believe this world where Shinjiro lived is real! There's nothing wrong with that! I will find a way!"

Orpheus disappeared above her as she dropped her Evoker.

"You don't know that," Hamuko responded.

Ryoji assumed his human form and hurried towards her. It was then she realized her legs had given up and dropped her to the floor. There was a brief silence in the air, but the voice behind outside the door finally replied.

"Yes. You're right. I don't know how to. But..." He was panting. "I'm not giving up on you, and I swear I will not go back to my world until I save you."

"You're an idiot."

"Yes, just like you, idiot."

She allowed Ryoji to assist her towards the door. Makoto Yuki's concern look was the first thing she saw when she opened it. Immediately, nothing exited their mouth, but the silence was calming. She glanced at the hallway of the third floor and caught sight of Aigis blocking the path at the staircase, where the rest of her friends prying for a peek at the scenario. Seeing everyone's determination, she gave in to the temptation of this hollowed world.

She's going to regret this, one way or another. She heard Ryoji's sigh, although he seemed oddly relieved.

"I guess it can't be helped." She heard him said.

Makoto Yuki

Night - 1/1/2010 - Naganaki Shrine

New year.

In one month, the deadline for this world will greet them. One more rank, but for some reason, there was a certainty in Makoto that believed it will be the hardest bond he will ever forge. Hamuko never attempted any conversation with him since last night, but not outright avoiding him. They were healing, but without a clue how to proceed. He noticed Akihiko and Ken's cold greet towards him, but he didn't mind. Trying to shift the blame to someone else seemed irresponsible. He did cause grief to her by hurting himself. The same goes for the girl.

Excluding Akihiko and Ken, nobody talked much about last night. At this point, Makoto suspected everyone had known about their relationship was beyond simple friends. And if the two Wild Card users were avoiding each other, yet close enough to seek each other in trouble times, he was not surprised the team assumed he and Hamuko were in a special relationship. Yukari, in particular, refused to look at him, and sometimes Mitsuru's face turned gloomy whenever she watched him and Hamuko for too long.

Fuuka and Junpei were rather passive about his relationship with Hamuko and made an effort to make the rest of the friends to talk to him. Bless them, almost made him want to reveal the possibility of Chidori's survival to Junpei. Still, he kept the conversation with Hamuko last night as secretive as possible. After all, he was the only one to confront the leader regarding her decision last night, and Aigis supported him in almost every argument regarding the incident.

When he arrived at the Naganaki shrine at dusk in a casual outfit of a dark shirt and blue trouser, Makoto spotted the boys; Junpei, Ken, and Akihiko by the feet of the staircase leading to the festival at the shrine above. Koromaru insisted on tagging alone, latching to Koromaru and Junpei for comfort. Akihiko was the one who spotted him from the street, and his face grew heavy. They eventually settled on moving ahead first and made their own expedition.

It's been a while since he had enjoyed the festival. Foods were good, games were eye-catching, but the people crowding the place reminded him that this world existed, even as his memories. There were cicadas here on the trees, and he swore he caught sight of a dark reddish butterfly passing by him. He could sense that Hamuko was currently heading his way with the rest of the team. Perhaps a chance to soothe their relationship?

He encountered Akihiko twice, but the boxer refused his presence. Before he made up with Hamuko, it seemed he needed to solve this tense atmosphere with the rest of his friends beforehand.

"Akihiko." Makoto tapped the boxer's shoulder, jerking him to his attention. "Let's talk about Hamuko."

"What?" Akihiko furrowed his eyebrows at his request, but he gave a slight sigh in defeat. He was not that ignorant. "*sigh* I guess there's no avoiding that." Akihiko pointed to the small shrine, "Back there. Don't let Ken-kun knows. He'll insist on joining."

They walked to the back of the shrine, where they were finally alone in the shade of the large building. Akihiko wasted no time to lean on the ledge of the shrine.

"Months ago, you asked me if I really do like her," Makoto began, "I said I didn't. That was... before I realized what I really felt. I was so wrong."

Akihiko said nothing at first, but he gave a small cough.

"Does she... know about it?" Akihiko asked.

Makoto nodded.

"Did she... return the feeling- You know what? Screw it. I'm just going straight to the point." He took a deep breath. "Were you... together?" He asked again, but with much more difficulties.

Makoto said nothing, but his sleeve was grabbed. Akihiko glared at him with suppressed frustration.

"Just say it." Akihiko pleaded. "That's all I need to know."

"We confessed to each other on last year's Christmas Eve, but we're not lovers. Our current situation is... more difficult than what it seems."

Akihiko's grip on his sleeve softened. He released his hand with a defeated look.

"Okay..." Akihiko said, shutting his eyes close. He opened it with a pair of painful eyes, "But I'm not giving up, you understand?" Akihiko crossed his arms together, "so if you don't reconcile with her soon, you're going to answer it with my fist."

Makoto didn't hide his small curved lips. "I will, and thank you."

They both left the shrine and soon encountered the girls in their kimonos with Junpei, Ken, and Koromaru greeting them. Mitsuru and Yukari sparsed a quick glance at them with a gesture before leaving with Junpei and Ken, although the young boy took a longer look at them. Fuuka stood with Hamuko and Aigis, but Akihiko was quick to break the tense mood.

"Fuuka, maybe we should leave them for a while," Akihiko said while observing Makoto and Hamuko.

"Y-Yeah, let's," Fuuka nodded and hurriedly left the area.

Akihiko patted Makoto's shoulder as he whispered, "Take care of her for me."

Aigis refused to budge from Hamuko's side, but he noticed her distance from her was wider than usual. Hamuko didn't seem bothered at all by it. As the three of them started walking, Aigis wedged herself between the two. Makoto merely chuckled, but Hamuko remained quiet, although she did smile.

"I advise you two to 'chatting' to ease the mood," Aigis suggested. Makoto widened his eyes at the sudden suggestion.

Hamuko suddenly spoke, "We have exactly one month left to fight Nyx." It was a good start.

He nodded. Hamuko continued.

"Are you not going to say anything about that?"

He shook his head. It was then he felt a strong pitch on his waist from Aigis's back, making him yelped slightly. It was Hamuko's hand, which Aigis immediately removed it and forced them slightly further apart.

"Do not fight."

"Yes." They both responded to Aigis's warning.

"...Isn't that what everyone agreed to?" Makoto replied to Hamuko's question, but perhaps it wasn't a strong reply, "Besides, I want to be with you a little while longer."

"For the mission."

"You know it's not true." Makoto suddenly halted his tracks and faced her. "You must accept this, sooner than later. What do I need to do to repair this bond?"

Hamuko remained silent for a while. Soon, they heard Junpei called out for them from among the others. It was clear that she wanted to bolt.

"Time," She answered, "Give me time. That's it."

Hamuko hurriedly left the two of them.

"She wants to reconcile, but do not know how," Aigis commented, "She is afraid."

"Me too," Makoto nodded, "So, remember my promise to explain everything to you about our relationship?"

He exposed everything to Aigis, except his true name and some unnecessary contents. Still, Aigis was unable to help his progress with Hamuko at all.

Without he realized it, weeks had passed. He had every right to panic. How much time did Hamuko need?

Velvet Room

It was tense. There was no need for Theodore to speak much of it. Mistress Elpis (She is yet to earn that title, but it will be wise to make it into a routine) was sitting on the guest's chair lazily while leaning her head on the seat's cushion. And yet, her eyes seemed to drill into Igor and him.

A few minutes ago, Minato Arisato filed a complaint regarding the tense relationship he had with his counterpart. Days passed without progress, and they all knew he was running out of time. He turned to Mistress Elpis regarding the issues, but she simply told him to bit his time carefully, but calmly. The boy certainly wasn't satisfied with the answer, but he left nonetheless. This time, Theodore understood Minato's frustration.

"Speak now," Mistress Elpis's voice boomed throughout the room. The statement, however, was directed at him.

"We are worried," Theodore confessed, "I still stand by my words that exposing the secret to Hamuko Arisato is a major mistake. We're losing control of the psyche of Minato-sama, and Hamuko's mind is unstable."

Elpis didn't respond, waiting for him to continue.

"If Hamuko refused to repair the bond before Nyx's arrival, we will be forced to pull Minato out of this world-"

"That will be enough, Theodore," Igor interrupted without glancing at him. He immediately closed his mouth for good.

"I will have to agree with my attendant regarding the issue," Igor observed the cards on his table, but his hands remained glued on each finger, "Not to doubt your decision, Mistress Elpis, but perhaps the Velvet Room should set a limit regarding the faith we give to our guest."

"As we should be," Mistress Elpis replied, "You involved too much of yourself into their activities. It will have to change. Minato Arisato, as a persona user, is far too developed for a teacher or advisor to help. Instead of push, it is time for us to show him his destination."

"Even with the world and the Sea of Soul at stake?" There was danger in Igor's voice.

"He is the messiah," Mistress Elpis replied, "By the breaking of the Seventh Seal, he must be the one to guide this world. None, not even us, can guide him saved for himself."

"But if he cannot guide us, it will be the end of collective unconsciousness!" Theodore lamented as he interrupted, "We already set this path long before your arrival. Please, there must be something to be done."

"We must move, Mistress Elpis. At the very least from the shadow," Surprisingly, Igor agreed to his statement.

The young mistress watched them with observing eyes for a while.

"Hamuko Arisato should be your priority," Elpis finally said, leaving her chair, "They must restore the bond on their own, no matter what happened. Hmmm..." Elpis gazed elsewhere in deep thoughts. "...I will do something about it."

"We will accept any assistance from you, Mistress Elpis," Igor nodded. Too soon, Theodore thought. Who knows what idea she had in mind?

Smiling mysteriously, Elpis exposed her palm. Above it appeared the Contact Card whose possession was given by Minato. Twirling the card between her fingers and studied it intensely, she asked, "How much control you have over this world?"

"The program allowed us to influence minor stuff that will not affect our guest's memories. However, some big adjustments will have to be made during a dire time."

"And thus, your orders have been set," Elpis made the card disappeared from her hand, "Prepare to 'skim' some days for the messiah. However, wait for my signal. And please marks down the conversations the messiah had made in his lost memories of Cultural Festival with Yu Narukami. We might overlook something."

Puzzled as they were, he and master Igor obeyed as usual. But she wasn't done.

"One more thing; avoid contacting me until my next voluntary visit. Under no circumstance will any of you mention me to our guests unless they spoke of me first."

Theodore furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. However, again, they bowed.

Hamuko Arisato

Night - 15/1/2010 - Unknown realm?

She was floating in an endless realm of darkness. But despite the abysmal darkness, she could still see her own hand and uniform. Was she send back to the Velvet Room? No, not that soon. She truly didn't need another dream currently, not when whatever plaguing her mind regarding her relationship with Makoto remained unconcluded. If this wasn't the room, what was this place?

From the endless darkness, she saw flickering light approaching her. On closer inspection, Hamuko could see that it was one of the most beautiful butterflies she had ever seen in her life. It was small, but its goldish glow made it brighter than it should. It approached her before flying away to somewhere. Her instinct told her that it wanted to be followed.

After walking for a while, she didn't realize the endless darkness around her had formed itself into spectacular scenery. She was walking on short grass and found herself approaching a house. Not exactly a 'house', but the cylinder shape with transparent glass as its walls and windows made her think of a cage. A massive cage.

From the outside, she saw a young blonde-haired teenage girl sat on one of the large wooden armchairs with blue cushions. Her biggest attempt to greet her when Hamuko approached the house was a simple but elegant bow. Other than another chair for her to sit, there's literally nothing else inside. Even the 'door' was shaded with a white curtain. When Hamuko lifted the curtain and walked into the domain, the butterfly guiding her earlier had landed on the mysterious girl's hand and disappeared.

"Greetings, Hamuko Arisato," She said when Hamuko sat opposite her, "My name is Elpis, and you are in my realm."

"Elpis..." Hamuko muttered before her eyes jerked open. "Ah! The girl Makoto mentioned to me! You're the one who's with the Velvet Room!"

Elpis appeared satisfied, "I am pleased you have heard of me from him. I understand you will need to rest. But I assured you, my words will be brief. This is about you, child, and the boy you called Makoto Yuki. I am here to return to you what was once your own."

Hamuko shuffled in her seat. This was the farthest topic she wanted to discuss with anyone, let alone a stranger. January was already half gone, yet she still didn't know how to 'talk' to him.

"True, he indeed willed you into existence. But do you know who named you?"

"Eh?" Hamuko furrowed her eyebrows, "I... I don't know. I don't have a name. I'm nobody."

"That cannot happen, dear," she smiled. It was a comforting one, at that, despite appeared younger than her. How odd for the girl to refer to her as 'child'. "If you have no presence, then I cannot grant you that name."

Hamuko left her mouth hang open slightly. Some hidden memory deep within her resurfaced.

"'Hamuko' Arisato. Arisato is the last name of the boy. I keep it for you as a reminder of who you are. Yes, I believe you are starting to remember. Arisato is the family name of your 'parents'. That name binds you to who you came from, and who you will return to.

"For your surname, however, you left me pondered for a while. I intended to name you 'Anima', but I believe it has to be from your own culture. Thus I coined the name 'Hamuko'; from the Japanese word, is it not? Shujinkou can roughly mean 'heroine' or 'protagonist'. It suits you, for you are the protagonist of your own world."

One memory returned to her.

At the earliest part of her true memories, she was living in complete darkness. However, a butterfly approached her, and she was given a name.

At this very place.

"I..." Hamuko stood from her chair and looked around the place, "I've been here. It was right after Makoto used the Universe Arcana. It was..." Hamuko watched her with widened eyes. "It was you. You greeted me, and you named me 'Hamuko' Arisato."

Elpis smiled, "and thus I have return what was once yours; your own memory. As of this moment, I own you nothing, and neither you to me. Your debt, your life, and your answer- even your very existence- lies within the boy."

Hamuko turned silent. Was that everything about her, a nobody without Makoto? Can she not love a man by her own free will, rather than necessary? She didn't know what to say or to do. What would be the best for Makoto Yuki? He was right again. It's always been about her. Elpis left her chair and sat next to her before gripping her hand. It was incredibly soft but firm.

"How a man perceives a woman in his life is how his Anima is envisioned to him," Elpis locked her in the eyes, "If all he sees in his Anima is a figure of a woman who rejects everything because of one man, how would that affect him? And how are you, who perceive him as your Animus, will be affected? Will you believe any man you see as a hopeless liar because of one person afterward? Will you deny any willing hand reaching out for you because of one betrayal? You and he are forever opposed but also connected. Stop running, child. Guide him, and he will guide you."

Hamuko found herself losing her consciousness.

Makoto Yuki

Dark Hour - 18/1/2010 - Adamah Block, Tartarus

He was running out of ideas.

Hamuko still wouldn't talk to him, no matter what he said. They were both improving at hiding their miscommunication, but Hamuko still turned to him with scorn. At this point, he almost wanted to teach her a 'lesson', despite being his Anima.

He didn't think much about his homeworld since that night he made his silent vow. Hamuko must be saved at all costs. A way to save her from being wiped clean from existence. Even if she was to return to him as his Anima, nothing else will remain of her. Only empty memory of a person that shouldn't be. He couldn't accept it. He will never be satisfied with simply remembering her. And yet, several days remained before his second battle with Nyx.

He will need time for it later. For tonight, Hamuko suggested clearing the last block and unlocked the last checkpoint as soon as possible. It didn't take him this late to reach this block in his homeworld, but the SEES had the help of two Wild Card users. In fact, Makoto encouraged the extra preparation, though not directly to the leader. She was gaining more confidence and determination as of lately, especially tonight. For tonight's mission, the leader picked him, Yukari, and Junpei as the front-liners. They managed a few floors in a flash, and Makoto realized everyone was already strong enough to fight Strega.

They had encountered a Reaper by accident after nearly half an hour. Despite their victory, everyone was clearly exhausted. Hamuko eventually called off the operation for tonight and returned to the front hall. However, when Hamuko told everyone to return home early, Makoto sensed something was terribly amiss the moment she stayed behind.

"Guys, can you go back first? I need to do some exercise," Hamuko said with a mysterious smile.

"What? Are you certain you will be alright?" Mitsuru asked.

"I can always stay back," Fuuka volunteered.

"No, you're all tired. I can tell," Hamuko said, "I still have enough power left, so I don't want to waste it."

"But being alone is still be dangerous," Ken said, "Someone must accompany you."

Suddenly, Hamuko locked her stares on him. Immediately, Makoto knew her true intention.

"I'll stay with her," Makoto suggested. They turned to him as he repeated it, "I'm sure there's hardly any shadow that can take on the two of us."

"...Don't be late," Mitsuru said. It took them a while to cross the school gate, but they eventually disappeared out of sight, leaving the two of them alone.

Makoto turned to Hamuko. Her smile slowly faded, and she returned to the front hall of the Tartarus. Makoto followed suit.

When they both arrived at the front hall, Hamuko, still wielding her naginata, keep a few steps away from him. She gripped her Evoker tightly on her other hand.

He knew what was coming. If the Velvet Room were involved, he should give them his thanks.

"Do you have the time you needed?"

"Yes."

"Are you sure about this?" Makoto asked again.

"The sooner, the better," Hamuko answered with almost a whisper.

Makoto gave no response and kept his sword lowered. Hamuko didn't smile now, but no anger either. However, the tone when she began to speak betray her expression.

"I was happy," She examined her Evoker, "I had no one before SEES, and I would risk everything for them. I will smile, as broad as I could, and show them they will always have me. I smile so that when they smile, they will stay with me. I smile because I want to be something to others. I smile... I smile because if I don't, I have nothing."

Hamuko narrowed her eyebrows.

"And then there's you. I don't know how to hide my feelings from you. Because of you, everyone has seen my fragile self. Because of you, I lost control of myself. Because of you..."

She took a battle stance.

"...I'll lose the one thing that makes me at home."

"You have me." Makoto comforted her, but he knew it was doomed to fail.

"It doesn't count. You chained me, so I want to break free. This is my answer."

Hamuko immediately aimed her Evoker at her temple.

"Thanatos."

Crash!

The god of death floated above her menacingly. However, Makoto didn't budge and kept his sword lowered.

"Do it," she said, examining the Evoker in his holster, "Give me one fight. That's all I want."

Makoto remained where he was. Hamuko bit her lower lip slightly, suppressing the pain. She steadied herself and approached him, still with Evoker in hand. The moment she was within range, Hamuko placed the barrel of the gun to his forehead.

Makoto calmly locked eyes with her. He gave only one response, "Make me."

Hamuko pulled the trigger, forcefully summoned his persona, another Thanatos.

Crash!

Arisato's Mind room, Velvet Room

The room didn't have much space for him and master Igor to sit. Not only the light was dim, but the dark velvet palette covering the walls and ceiling of the small room didn't help with the situation.

Which was actually the ideal shape of the room for Igor. Every 'switch' was literally an arms reach, secluded enough to hide from any malevolent force or negative thoughts. To introduce all the 'switch' would take weeks; the buttons, the switches, and monitors were akin to what the human called 'videogame console'. How did humans consider such a complex mechanism as a source of entertainment? It must be those online games that corrupted Minato Arisato's mind, that it influenced the appearance of the Mind room.

Was it too complicated as an explanation? Mind Room was as literal as it sounded; the room composed of Minato's perceptive mind, where his memories are stored. Naturally, it couldn't control the entirely of Minato's consciousness, not to mention controlling his mind. This room affected only this world, so it won't have any side effects on their guest. It's unfortunate that, like the appearance of the Velvet Room, Mind Room was shaped by their guest as well.

He should have asked Hamuko to bring him to an arcade last time. Too late to regret his choice, Theodore glanced at Igor manning the device and setting up a few things. He foresaw his own demise, Mistress Elpis will certainly bring a mind-breaking task harder than his master soon enough. Not because it was demanding, but she was too auspicious with such a small and odd requirement to complete. However, it was not his place to question her choice.

Theodore glanced at his master. How many hours will Minato be 'skimmed' again? He hoped it won't hamper his relationship with Hamuko. At most, two days must be more than enough.

It was then they felt the room shaking. The rumbling was mild but strong enough to cause difficulties to stand. It softened after a while, but the vibration still stirred the ground.

"It seems there was an interference. I suspect our two guests are fighting. There is no need to worry." Master Igor stated.

Reassured by his master's words, Theodore began to serene himself despite the concern. The machine let out a loud mechanical sound before the screen faded to black.

"It is done," Theodore commented.

"Be ready for your task when the time comes, Theodore," Igor said, "I will have to await Mistress Elpis's order."

He said nothing more but nodded. Theodore left the Mind room and let out a loud sigh. Mistress Elpis. Truly a figure with a mysterious mindset, much more so than his master, or master Philemon for that matter.

As soon as he spoke those words, one object fell down onto the mattress in front of him, leaving bombing sound and smokes where it landed. Theodore stumbled backward in horror, watching the object in hostile. Igor, who left the Mind Room, approached the small meteor calmly and reached out to it.

It was a white card, with notes written on both sides. The signature golden butterfly symbol on the bottom right of the card indicated the sender. From afar, Theodore glimpsed the note as he approached his master but found himself difficult to read it. The font was small, written in elegant styles, plus it was inked with gold, which made it harder to read on the white card. Still, Igor surprisingly showed no difficulties in reading it. However, the more he read, the more puzzled his expression was. It was the first time seeing Igor hesitated to give the order.

"Hmmm... This is interesting..." Igor commented, "Theodore, we have our date."

Theodore nodded, preparing his command.

"20th of January," He read the instructions given, "Skim the messiah from the date given to the moment Hamuko Arisato battled Nyx."

Theodore raised his head and gasped. He almost felt like his eyes would pop out of his sockets. Mistress Elpis was not joking, and neither was Igor. His fear was underwhelmed. This young mistress truly was more difficult than Master Igor! That's more than 10 days!

"...Are you certain, master Igor?" Theodore asked again, needing to reassure himself.

"It is what is written, Theodore," Igor replied, revealing the notes to him. Theodore's face turned white. It was exactly as his master's words.

"Forgive me for commenting," he said, "Surely, Mistress Elpis understand skimming those days might affect Minato's relationship with Hamuko Arisato? Why are we in so much rush?"

"Time. Time always running short."

"Time?" Theodore repeated.

"We lacked time in the other world," Igor replied, "The third seal will be broken soon. We need the messiah as soon as possible."

Theodore let out an 'ah' sound in understanding. Of course. In a few days- no, in a few hours at the original world, Strife will break through the seal.

"There is one more command she left to me," Igor added, turning to the back of the notes. Did Master Igor just... smirked at him? "It seems that this world is your affair permanently, my attendant. As worded by Mistress Elpis:

'Hasten to the homeworld this instance and do not return. Yu Narukami needs your help. Leave all remaining tasks to your attendant, Theodore. I will clean up the troubles should it occurs.'

"...Such is written, Theodore."

This time, Theodore didn't gasp. He straight up howled.

"Master Igor! You cannot possibly think I could- Goodness, this is manners! I mean madden! I-I mean marble! Madness! AH!" Theodore cried, stuttering his speech. "Forgive me for voicing out my opinion again, but I am not as capable as my sisters! Minato Arisato is the messiah, the pillar of this prophecy! You should leave this task to someone with more experience! Please, Mistress Elpis will understand!"

He began to regret his words when his master glared at him with a towering presence. He immediately kneeled, feeling his body shivering in a cold sweat. Margaret would be better for this job! He was more of an errand boy for his sisters than undertaking this task! The new mistress is beyond comprehension.

When he lifted his head, he realized Master Igor was a step away from where he kneeled. His face remained passive, but Theodore sensed something dreadful from him. Master Igor gently pulled his shoulder up, and he was on his two feet again. Theodore took a few deep breaths and composed himself. It didn't seem as though he prepared a punishment.

"Mistress Elpis entrust this to you. Do you understand the faith she put on you?" His master said and nothing else. He waited, and waited, and soon silence enveloped the room. It seemed he was not allowed to give an excuse, not after this far. Besides, it was true Minato's world need Igor more than this world. After a while, Theodore admitted his task but didn't dare an audible sigh this time.

"I will do my best," Theodore answered at last. His master curved his lips with satisfaction.

"Excellent." Master Igor said, "Allow me to set the date for skimming, and this world is your responsibility at last."

Theodore bowed. By the time Master Igor returned to the Mind Room, he realized the quaking had ceased. The fight between two Wild Card users had ended.

Hamuko Arisato

Dark Hour - 18/1/2010 - Front Hall, Tartarus

The area was scorched with burned marks and wreckage of battle, despite it being short. Hamuko laid herself on top of Makoto as the blade of naginata in her hand was rested inches away from Makoto's neck. The blue-haired boy didn't budge from his place. He merely locked her in her eyes without fear.

"Why?" Hamuko asked between her harsh breath, "Why did you hold back?"

"*cough* Because... it's not what I want."

"But that's what I want! We're one and the same! So what I want should be what you-"

"Is that what you're afraid of?" Makoto curved his lips slightly, lifting his slightly crumpled left sleeve from the ground and rested his palm on her cheek. Not once did he care about the blade on his throat, as though he knew she would never do the deed. "Hamuko, you're everything I wanted from a woman, and myself. You're my dreamt person. How can you think so flawed of yourself?"

Then, without she noticed it, Makoto's eyes leaked small tears, followed by a few droplets on his faces. She realized the tears came from her eyes, till her vision blurred. This was the answer to Elpis's question. This is the only way to snap herself out of her anxiety before she could 'guide' Makoto. The only way to see the answer was through the fight, to see his resolution. However, she slightly regretted it upon seeing Makoto's reaction. He truly was mad with her, something she didn't foresee. She was not frustrated with him, but with herself, and the boy knew that.

"I don't want to be your ideal self," Hamuko confessed, "because I want to be something more than that! I want something that makes me 'myself' so that I know my feelings for you are real. I hate to be nothing more than 'you'. I'm scared that by talking to you, I will just be reminded of what I am. But you understand that, right?"

Makoto smiled. "How about now? Are you still in doubt?"

The girl finally let go of the naginata from his neck and threw it across the floor. The tears from her cheeks overflowed, and soon Makoto's too. Gently, she laid her head on his chest, feeling his heartbeats beating softly. She rested on top of him for a while before, groaning about his back, Makoto pushed her sideway as he uprighted his back and sat next to her.

"You're not just part of me anymore, Hamuko. There's nothing wrong with what you feel," Makoto said, but something made him frowned, "Wait, you're not embarrassed with me because I look like our dads now, are you?"

"What if I am?" She forced a tease amidst the tears. His eyes looked horrified for a moment before she added. "Just kidding. I wondered though, what will happen in the end?"

"I don't really care about it," Makoto slowly stood up, dusting the dirt on his legs. Hamuko followed his steps and stood on her two legs. The blue-haired boy continued, "My shadow, my Anima, or my counterpart; as long as you live on to be more than a memory, I'll be satisfied."

"More than just memories of you," Hamuko wiped clean her tears and smiled weakly, although embarrassed, "About the fight..."

Makoto laughed suddenly and said, "I was a bit frustrated with you too, to be honest. I mean, days of no contact?"

Hamuko widened her eyes. "So the fight is mutual!"

"Well, you have your answer." The boy suddenly wrapped his arm around her waist before she could pitch him, "Will we continue our proper conversation afterward?"

She understood why, though was still uncomfortable with his reaction to it. He should have been angrier towards her. Elpis was right on one thing. She is his Anima, and only she can guide him. Makoto smiled, as though reading her mind.

...Wait. Was it just her, or the telepathy they had together suddenly restored to the time before they met at river Styx? She examined Makoto's face, as it seemed his smile broadened.

"Our social link is no longer reversed."

Hamuko widened her eyes and soon was unable to hide her grin again.

They left the front hall together and walked out of Tartarus. To their shock, they found everyone from SEES waiting for them at the school gates, still in their battle gears. Obviously, they gasped at the pair's state, especially Makoto who suffered worse injuries, though minor enough for a day recovery. Aigis dashed towards them in panic.

"You guys..." Hamuko asked, "why are you still here?"

"We were worried," Aigis immediately wrapped her arms around both of them. Makoto groaned in pain at her force, but Hamuko remained unaffected. "You will receive proper medication once we return."

"As if we let our squad leader walked into Tartarus alone with a single member," Mitsuru answered, "Though the decision was made halfway towards the dorm. When Fuuka's detention confirmed you two never ventured beyond the front hall, we thought you want some... privacy alone."

"Strange. How did you get into this without fighting Shadows?" Yukari narrowed her eyes at them. Hamuko and Makoto turned away their face that blooming small redness on their cheeks. Yukari widened her eyes when she understood, "Wait, are you two..."

"Did you have a fight?!" Junpei shouted, "Dude! What are you doing?"

"Reconcile," Makoto replied as Aigis removed herself from them.

"Yeah!" Hamuko supported his statement, "W-We're good now!" She pulled his shoulder to her and let out a peace sign. Makoto, although kept his expression cold, mimicked her peace sign with a small smirk, an expression so rarely shown to them that they almost gasped at the boy.

"What the hell?" Akihiko palmed his face. "Then... you're okay?"

"Yes." Hamuko and Makoto replied simultaneously. "We're more than okay."

The SEES turned to each other in puzzlement. However, seeing as the Dark Hour will soon come to an end, they hurriedly planned out their departure. Still, Hamuko believed it was only right to express herself.

"Guys, I have something to say."

Everyone turned to her, including Makoto. Hamuko smiled, leaning towards the blue-haired boy and held his hand. "We're dating."

Everyone's reaction varied from one and another. Makoto's face was blank, though she sensed shyness from within. The petite navigator seemed calm about it, seeing as Makoto already rejected Fuuka's confession months ago. She knew Akihiko and Ken would find it harder to accept the news, but she never expected Mitsuru and Yukari to seem... calm. She's not blind enough to their affection, but where came the strength for their acceptance? Junpei was the one who appeared most shocked, but Aigis looked as if she already knew about it.

"Uh..." Junpei spoke with his mouth hanging open, "C-Congrats?"

"You can date however you want, as long as you keep it moderate," Yukari said. She turned towards the road. "Well, let's go."

"Treat yourself once we're home," Mitsuru commented, "and don't let your studies neglected because of your relationship."

Everyone left, except for Fuuka and Aigis.

"I'm happy for you," Fuuka praised before she too dashed away and regrouped with the team. Aigis said nothing, but she appeared joyous at their interaction. A few more days to make memories. But Hamuko pushed the thought away and began walking home, still holding Makoto's hand.

They were lovers, at last.

Makoto Yuki

Evening - 19/1/2010 - Velvet Room

For some reason, he couldn't contain his joy for the day. One more rank with Hamuko and his mission will be complete. However, he never intended to break his promise to her. He will find a different way, and he will start soon enough. The best option he had was to visit the Velvet Room and discussed things with Igor. Still, there was one more thing bothering his mind. What did he need for the last rank of the Universe social link?

Perhaps it was a blessing when, as he and Hamuko walked home together, Theodore called his phone, summoning the two Wild Card users to the Velvet Room immediately. Although curious, they both thought nothing of it at first. They were too busy indulging at the quiet moment between them. Still, when they saw Theodore's sullen face upon entering the room, Makoto felt uncomfortably out of place. Igor was apparent out of commission for a while, but that was not the purpose of their summons.

"Makoto Yuki, Hamuko Arisato, please forgive me for interrupting your social event." Theodore bowed apologetically. He noticed the attendant's eyes were locked on him, hiding something behind those blue eyes. Even Hamuko had started to feel anxious.

"What's wrong?" Hamuko asked, but it seemed to be heavier than she thought. The resident of the Velvet Room, despite maintaining a calm demeanor, still struggled to break the silence.

"I'm afraid I bring unsavory news to both of you," The attendant spoke, "Makoto Yuki will have to be skimmed again."

Makoto froze where he stood. Hamuko looked at him with concern, oblivious to the meaning behind it.

'Skimming'. That was the term Theodore used after he reached rank 9 of his social link with Hamuko the night of Christmas Eve. Before he entered the realm within his lost memories about the event of Cultural festival with the Investigation Team, his presence was 'removed' from this world, leaving everyone, except for Hamuko, to lose all memories of him. For Hamuko, it was only five days, but for him, it was unquestionably short.

That was what they called 'skimming', like skimming through days.

"Hamuko..." Makoto turned to the worried girl, "It means I have to disappear again like last time."

She widened her eyes in shock, then in agony, before she lowered her head as joy slipped from her face. She didn't understand much about what happened to him, but they both knew it's pointless to explain to her everything.

"When?" Hamuko asked, gripped her hand in his hand. He felt her fingers trembling.

"Tomorrow sharp," Theodore answered. The attendant's face grew heavier, "Today, or rather tonight, will be your last moment together before the battle with Nyx, as we will bring Makoto straight towards the end battle."

"You must have an explanation for this," He asked. Surprisingly, His answer was quick.

"You do not have much time left in your homeworld," Theodore said, "We have no choice but to skim you."

"My social link?"

The attendant nodded, "It will have to be complete until then, without interaction, and perhaps some extension will be needed until graduation day. Even then, we need to speed up the process."

It was too fast. At this moment, Makoto truly realized his moment with Hamuko was ending soon. They waited for his response, but there was nothing to say. Silence barged into the Velvet Room before finally, the two guests left the place.

Hamuko Arisato

Evening - 19/1/2009 - Iwatodai Dorm

The dorm was already within sight as they walked side by side. Makoto remained silent, but Hamuko knew the boy was suppressing his grief. One more day left, and their next meeting would be during their battle against Nyx. No more time for themselves, no more time to make memories. The happiness this morning seemed like a distant memory, now.

She halted her steps, and soon Makoto froze in his place. He stared at her for a while in puzzlement, deciphering her trail of thoughts. What she desired was only one at the moment.

"Let's go out tonight."

Makoto didn't change his expression at her words. But he did ask, "Where?"

"I don't know, but... somewhere. Just us."

Makoto remained silent, turning his attention back towards the dorm. He thought for a moment, then shifted his attention back towards her, "Pick your best dress. I'm going to make a call."

When she noticed his expression, Hamuko complied and entered the dorm. The sun will set soon, leaving them a few hours left. But Makoto seemed to have a plan in mind.

Unfortunately, it was dark by the time she finished her dressing, where Makoto was waiting for her in his dark blue suit. Hamuko herself wore an orange blouse, although not bright enough to garnish attention, nor appeared too bland. She already informed Mitsuru of their activities for the night, but the student council president approved without a second thought. She tried to be vagued about her intention outdoor with Makoto to Mitsuru since it seemed she was correct on one point; Mitsuru did harbor feelings for the blue-haired boy.

They complimented each other's dresses as they left the dorm. Makoto led her towards somewhere with confidence, as though he already knew their destinations.

"Where are we going?" Hamuko dared the question.

"Since they're going to take away days of my time with you," Makoto answered, "I asked the Velvet Room to provide some income for us. Let's go... everywhere."

Speechless at first, Hamuko let out a giggle at his words.

Makoto Yuki

Night - Rooftop, Iwatodai Dorm

They didn't stop at Wild Duck Burger when arrived, nor at the Beef Bowl Shop. Karaoke, cafe, bookstores, arcade, or even the shrine; they continued to walk. Time, which appeared to be straining them all their lives, had stretched longer than any other night he ever experienced. Perhaps the Velvet Room was responsible for it, or perhaps it was his conscious mind not remembering the time. He was simply too happy for this night, a night that he knew will come to an end.

When the crescent moon began to be visible in the night sky, they knew the Dark Hour will soon approach. Sullenly, they went home, but he still has something in mind. Upon reached the dorm, he dragged Hamuko to the top of the building. The rooftop was inaccessible to all, but he requested the Velvet Room to make it unlocked. No, he will not ask from Mitsuru again, after everything she had done for him, and the things he had done to her for Hamuko.

The last time they went to the rooftop was last year, when they both summoned their persona for the first time. For Makoto, it was a lifetime ago. For Hamuko, it felt like yesterday. It was incredibly dark with a small amount of light from the next building. It was oddly clean, but there was a trace of dust on the edge of the rooftop. Still, it was perfect.

He turned to the girl, and she was blushing. Not like the ending of a fairytale, but this was happy enough. They stepped to the center of the floor and began setting each other's MP3 players. As the same song synced, he took Hamuko's hand, preparing the last dance.

~Memories of You~

No song suited them better at the moment, perhaps the only song that could represent this night. Step. Step. Step. They danced, forgetting about everything around them. Whether his homeworld or this imitation world, none of it mattered for the night. Letting go, as much as they could, of all the world's burden, be it Nyx, Shadows, Persona, friends, or despair plaguing their lives. Step. Step. Step.

Their mind accepted each other, linking as many thoughts and emotions as they could. Tonight, they were soulmates, a separated pair united. Tonight, they embraced each other warmth to keep their fires lit. Step. Step. Twirl. They danced, never missed a step because their mind is one; metaphorically, psychologically, and literally.

He wondered what more did he need to complete the last rank of the Universe Arcana? But then, he realized. Like a fool searching, he already had the answer all along.

"It's you."

Hamuko looked upward from his chest to his face when he spoke. She removed one side of her earphone and watched him.

"All I have to do to complete the last rank, and the hardest part... is to accept you as part of me."

"As your Anima?" Hamuko asked.

He nodded. Despite saddened, she let out a smile.

"Then you should know that by saving me, you will never achieve the Universe Arcana."

"Hamuko, I-"

The girl pressed one finger on his lips. Her smile never faded when she spoke, "Let's not ruin our night."

Baffled at first, he eventually nodded.

Soon, they both fell silent and continued the dance. At last, the song finished. They realized the night was closing into Dark Hour.

It was then, they realized another presence was there with them on the rooftop. Theodore certainly waited longer for them, as shown by the way he lazily leaned on the wall next to the exit door. They simply failed to notice him sooner.

"I do not wish to disturb you," Theodore said, "but it is time. Do not worry, your stuff will be erased as well."

Makoto gestured at him. "A moment." He turned to Hamuko, and it was obviously harder for the girl to release her hand from him.

"I'll see you again," Hamuko muttered holding for another moment before, with heavy heart, she let go of his hand.

He approached the attendant, preparing to leave. Thankfully, Theodore didn't question much of what had transpired. He held his hand, and soon, his vision faded to darkness.

Hamuko Arisato

Lunchtime - 21/1/2010 - Gekkoukan High

It's strange. She wasn't as shocked as the previous incident. As she experienced the day before, everyone has truly forgotten Makoto Yuki, although Aigis was strangely close-mouthed since yesterday. Somehow, she believed that the change didn't affect Aigis that much. Aigis investigated no further regarding Makoto's disappearance due to everyone's reaction, but once in a while, the android did observe Hamuko a bit longer than usual, as if seeing the blue-haired boy within her. It was only then she realized out of everyone in SEES, or in the world, Aigis's voice was the loudest to be heard from the Great Seal, where Hamuko was born. Ever since then, Hamuko kept her closer, to make sure the girl received the warmth of Makoto through her.

Yes, she believed she knew the answer, the things that belonged to her alone, and to Aigis.

Which was the main reason why during today's lunchtime, when Mitsuru urgently called Hamuko to the student council office, Aigis insisted on tagging along. Mitsuru didn't object to the pair when they entered the student council office. Still, she kept her voice low.

"Arisato, do you remember the girl named Chidori who was with the Strega?" Mitsuru began, "I don't mean to alarm you, but... the fact is, there's a chance that she may wake up today."

Hamuko didn't believe what she just heard. Chidori Yoshino, the girl who was romantically involved with Junpei, and also the same girl Makoto tried to save months ago, is alive. She couldn't contain her joy until she hugged both Aigis and Mitsuru in the midst of her celebration. Somehow, Junpei himself barged into the room, apparently eavesdropping their conversation from the outside.

"Chidori... is alive?!" Junpei said.

Tatsumi Memorial Hospital

Chidori was truly alive. Despite losing all her memories about her meeting with him, Junpei didn't seem heartbroken one bit. He wept of happy tears, of course, and Hamuko overheard the girls outside crying like a child outside the ward. Except for Aigis who let out a smile despite being forced to wait outside with the rest of them.

No need to judge them. Hamuko too nearly shed a tear upon the sight of Chidori's baffling expression as the girl comforted the crying Junpei on her bed. Makoto would be proud if he saw this event. He did save a life, and he did it well. He truly cared about everyone, just as she did.

How could she think of abandoning this world to Nyx? In her grief, she nearly rejected everything. Even as a creation of Makoto's memories, these people existed. The answer appeared more solid to her. Even if it was a hopeless faith, she wanted this world to live.

Morning - 25/1/2010 - Gekkoukan High

The students were to decide their next stage in life after high school today. Knowing her own demise, Hamuko seriously refused Ms. Toriumi's question regarding her career orientation. College or job? Regardless of her answer, she didn't think much of it. When it was Aigis's turn to give her career choice, Hamuko knew the android will be on the rooftop.

Aigis appeared to be in deep thoughts when she greeted her during the windy morning. She mentioned her decision to 'live' and finding the answer within Hamuko. The android seemed determined to be with her, but something else held Aigis's thoughts.

"Do you know someone named Makoto Yuki?" She asked hesitantly, "I saw a boy within you. I saw someone close to us. I saw someone that should be here, but not. This may sound strange, but he told me something about another world... Also, I sense him within you, Hamuko-san."

Hamuko smiled. Her guess was right. Aigis did have a remnant of the lost memories, no matter how many times Makoto 'skimmed'. She answered with a reassuring tone, "Even when nobody remembers him but us, he exists and is here with us."

"Will everyone remember him?"

"Trust me, Aigis. Everyone will soon. And nobody will forget him again."

Although nodding, Aigis wasn't satisfied. "There is something else, Hamuko-san. I am remembering something that should not happen."

Hamuko raised her eyebrows, "What do you mean?"

Aigis walked to one of the benches not far from where they stood and sat on it. Melancholy filled her expression.

"I remember him here, sleeping on my laps. I do not remember what day is it, but everyone is supposed to meet us here. He is sleeping, at least I believed so at first, but...!"

Aigis suddenly clenched her chest, as though in great pain. Hamuko rushed to her side in a panic. "A-Aigis?!" Hamuko said, clutching her shoulders tightly.

She was not in pain but was remembering something. Aigis turned to her and Hamuko saw something incredible. She never thought machinery could cry! The way one tear leaked out of her eyes made it certain. This 'girl' was living. Then, those left her mouth as she stared at Hamuko.

"How could I forget your name?"

Then, a flash, like a sequence of old film reels.

"I will always protect you..."

A figure of Aigis smiling broadly upon the sleeping face of the blue-haired boy surfaced in Hamuko's mind. A sequence of Makoto's memories from his old world forced itself into her mind. What's going on?! Was it Aigis's recollection of Makoto?

And then, she glimpsed at a miracle.

She saw that female attendant, days before in the other world, in Makoto's memories.

She saw Theodore's sister, clutching the figure of Makoto's soul around her arms as she triggered the Evoker on his temple. This memory... came from his world.

River Styx

When she blinked again, she found herself in a familiar place. Why did she return to this accursed river? She was on one side of the flooding river, watching in horror as the river was storming like mad. Heavy rain washed over her body, Lightning clashed on the spaceless sky, and the river was like a storm of the tsunami itself. Currently, this place brought her terror and misery. She was more than certain now.

Something happened to Makoto which enforced his memories upon her.

Still, she resolved herself to stand. That memory of Theodore's sister through the eyes of her Animus. How was that possible? Perhaps...

As long as Makoto's memories lived with her as the vessel, the world can coexist with the other world?

The perfect mixture of two separated memories, their Anima and Animus merged.

"Makoto..." She mused between joy and grief, gazing at the storming weather at the river Styx. "I saw... your world."

Aigis

25/1/2010 - Rooftop, Gekkoukan High

Minato Arisato.

That was the true name of the boy in her memories. Aigis had no idea how she knew that, but it was a memory that shouldn't belong to her, yet it did. As she sat on that bench, She wondered why she even forgot about the boy in the first place? She swore to protect him forever, and she loves him, more than a friend or family will understand.

Which begged the question: Who was this girl with a ponytail-haired brunette? Why did she share almost everything with Minato?

When she turned to the girl, Hamuko was lying on the ground unconscious. She widened her eyes.

"Hamuko-san?!" Aigis called out to her as she laid the girl's head on her lap. Her breathing was rapid, and her face was ashen white, as though blood had left her body. Judging from the way she reacted, it seemed the girl felt pain everywhere on her body.

"Help! We need help!" Aigis shouted, but she knew it will be faster to carry the girl herself. With bridal carry, Aigis kicked open the rooftop door and dashed for the infirmary. On her journey to the destination, she caught a few words from the girl.

"You're finally here..."

And... Hamuko was gone from her arms. Instead, the blue-haired boy replaced her position.

"Minato...-san?" Aigis said.

Velvet Room

Theodore was busy cleaning the room after sending the guest away to another secluded realm. There was no need for chores, but being alone in the room felt disturbing. The silence was not comforting, despite being tasked with a solo mission before. Mistress Elpis never visited him since the day Master Igor left him. As a member of the room, time moves differently. Hours were all it takes to reach the moment SEES battle Nyx.

Laughably, Theodore realized he would miss Hamuko, both as a guest and as a person. He was secretly proud to be able to understand his sisters' love towards their guests. Is this love? No matter, he was satisfied with whatever choice she made in the end. His work always comes first, after all.

As he was busy daydreaming about the future while cleaning his master's table, he wondered what happened to the Contact Card that Mistress Elpis took with her. He did analyze the lost memories as requested by the young mistress, but he found nothing of it yet. What was it she wanted to be found?

It took him a while to noticed the sound of footsteps entering the room. Theodore lifted his head and was quite surprised to see the hidden guest himself. It seemed Minato Arisato preferred his school uniform, despite being given a Velvet Room's uniform during his rest here. He looked awfully pale, for some reason, with the way he swayed as he walked towards him.

"Minato-sama? Is there anything you need?" Theodore asked with curiosity, "Should you not be resting?"

"I see, sorry..." He scratched his left cheek lightly, "Where's Igor?"

"Return to the original world," the attendant answered, "I believe you won't see him anymore until you complete your mission here. He left as instructed by Mistress Elpis days ago."

Minato raised his eyebrows, "With who?"

"You know, the one-"

"One more thing; avoid contacting me until my next voluntary visit. Under no circumstance will any of you mention me to our guests unless they spoke of me first."

...Oh no. He forgot. That was mistress Elpis's warning.

"Ah, it's nothing! Just me tongue-twisted again!" Theodore laughed nervously. Minato merely watched him with a blank face. Theodore quickly changed the subject, "Please, go and rest before I call you, Minato-sama."

"I see... I need to be back in my room." Minato smiled for the first time and took another step towards him.

And then a sudden realization hit him. How did the guest enter this room without the key provided? Since Minato was currently outside the conscious world of Hamuko, he shouldn't be able to enter this place without Theodore's permission-

All of a sudden, Theodore felt a piercing terror through his body. The figure in front of him smirked broader, knowing his cover was blown.

This wasn't Minato Arisato.

"Azathoth Arcana: Chariot."

It happened in a split second. By the time Theodore glanced at the pain on his chest, a large circular hole was there instead of flesh. The round cut was so clean, it was a surprise there were no remains of his chest on the floor. As someone from the Sea of Soul, he didn't bleed blood, but merely faded into fragments like crumbling dust. He examined the figure in front of him. The intruder was holding the legendary book linked to the Nuclear Chaos with one hand, while the other hand was behind his back. Half of his face was covered with a black mask, and the half-exposed face, the face of Minato Arisato, shown a sinister smile.

"Thank you for your assistance, servant," The figure snickered.

It was painful, but Theodore mustered up the strength to utter the name of the defiled creature in front of him.

"C-Crawling Chaos... Nyarlathotep..."

Theodore stumbled backward and fell to the ground. He was in fear, not for himself. He feared for this world, Hamuko, and Minato.

They were found at last.

The enemy has found the body of Minato Arisato.

The Universe Arcana and that power is slipping away...

Morning - 7/12/2012(Friday) - Abyss Of Time, Tatsumi Port Island, Original World

(Friday of Strife)

The entrance to the Abyss of Time was a broad staircase leading downwards to a series of doors on the boundless sandy landscape. On each of these doors were chained with large metal and bound by a single padlock. The pattern repeated for every door in that seemly boundless chamber, all except for one. When one descended upon the staircase, the first door they will see will be the Central Door, the largest and sturdiest of all doors. This door was the most protected, most heavily chained, and most guarded.

When Minato Arisato entered the door and relieved his school year again, the resident of the Velvet Room made a single powerful command to the seal: "Protect the messiah at all cost." Out of all the residents above this secluded chamber, Ken Amada, the young middle schooler of the Shadow Operative, was the only one who made it his duty to protect the body of his old leader by visiting it twice a day. Which was why he knew how protected the Central Door is.

Ken knew that not even the entire force of Shadow Operative could break through the door. The numerous seals on it were probably in a class of its own. He had mixed opinions regarding the Velvet Room's promise for his leader's protection, but Aigis and Yu Narukami of Inaba reassured them Igor could be trusted more than anyone.

Perhaps trust wasn't enough to reassure everything. Ken wasn't sure if he regretted trusting the room's protection, or not notifying Mitsuru sooner. He didn't come this far to fall now, didn't he?

He studied the blood on his hand that clenched his neck earlier. Blood, so much blood. The fight above this floor was intense enough to gather onlookers. What a shame, he was beginning to enjoy his stay at Raku Hotel before it was attacked. Still, despite his pain, He continued to crawl down the staircases to see the state of the Central Door. Once he confirmed he was low enough to peek at his destination, Ken tilted his head upward with much difficulty. He gasped, then screamed in anger.

The Central Door was barged open with force. He was too late. The enemy had attacked the apartment and invaded the sanctuary of his leader. Powerless, just as the day they lost him before.

"Ahhhhh! Damn it!" Ken screamed, ignoring the pain in his throat. He coughed more blood, but he didn't care. He didn't know what to do but screamed.

"Mitsuru-san... please!" He knew nobody will ever hear his scream, yet he continued. "Enemy attack! They found Minato-san! Call... *cough*! Call everyone! We need help! Nyarlathotep found us! He's trying for the Universe Arcana!"

A/N: Sorry for the late update. But as promised, the next chapter will be the last chapter of this arc. Only one more rank to go, what will happen to Minato and Hamuko now that their location was exposed? How will Minato save this world? Will he save it at all, or must he give up everything for the Universe Arcana and his world? How will their relationship end? After all, something crucial oblivious to Minato himself is happening. What is it that Elpis wants from Minato? How will everything conclude?

For context, in Jungian psychology, syzygy means the split between Anima and Animus, male and female. In essence, it's something like the union of an opposite force, like Yin and Yang.

Please wait for the slow update.
