Sonja couldn't help but be worried about Chris. She always worried about him when he was in the field but things were different now. They had pledged their love for one another, hell he even said he wanted to marry her. He defended her to his stepmom, chose her over everything else. You always hear about those great love stories, but now Sonja was actually living one.
A knock at LaSalle's door brought her out of her thoughts. She went out to the door and peered through the peephole. She opened the door with surprise.
"Director Vance?"
Chris met with the team at the address Patton had given them. If there was any hope for him, tonight they would crack the case and he could hurry home to his City Mouse. They had been interrupted far too many times already.
"You guys ready?" Pride asked.
"Let's get this done," Chris said through gritted teeth.
"On three," Pride said as Gregorio and Sebastian took the back. "One, two, three!"
Pride and Chris burst in the front door and immediately encountered a gunman. He fired at them and they both returned fire. Hard to tell which bullet took him down, but down he went. Gregorio and Sebastian had come in from back. Together the four of them found Kingman sitting a desk with his finger hovering above the enter key.
"You shoot me and we all go out like the fourth of July," Kingman said.
"Let's just be reasonable about this," Pride said, holding up his gun in a show of good faith. "We don't have to do this like this."
"I ain't going to no prison. Death will be better than that. At least then they can't get to me."
"Who's they?" Gregorio asked.
"I can't tell you but they're probably watching," Kingman said as a window behind Pride and Chris shattered. a bullet had come through the window, single shot to the heart, killing Kingman. All the agents hit the floor.
"Everyone alright?" Pride called out.
"I'm good," Gregorio said.
"Yeah me too," claimed Sebastian.
"Christopher, you okay?" Pride asked.
"King, we may have a problem," Chris said faintly. Pride turned around to see Chris holding his neck. A shard of bloody glass lay on the ground next to him.
"Gregorio call 911 and tell them we have an agent down," Pride exclaimed as he rushed to hold Chris's neck. "And someone needs to call Sonja, have her meet us at the hospital!"
"Thank you for coming here Director Vance," Sonja was saying standing up. She extended her hand and Vance took it.
"Always a pleasure Agent Percy. It's been long overdue."
"Thank you so much sir, I promise you won't be disappointed," Sonja said with a smile as her phone rang. She picked it up and saw it was Sebastian.
"Excuse me please."
"I'll just see myself out. Good luck Agent Percy."
"Thanks again!" Sonja called as she answered. "What's up Wordy and Nerdy?"
"Um, hi Sonja. Pride wanted me to call and um, tell you to meet us at the um, hospital."
"What happened?" Sonja asked, already grabbing her coat.
"LaSalle, he um, got cut by some broken glass at the scene."
"Where?"
"His neck."
"I'm on my way." Sonja rushed out the door.
At the hospital, Sonja rushed into the emergency waiting room. She saw Pride sitting there.
"What happened?" she asked, breathless.
"We entered the house, took out a gunman at the front. While trying to talk down Kingman, sniper took him out. Christopher got cut by some broken glass."
"How bad is it?" Sonja asked, feeling weak in the knees.
"Doc said its not too deep, few stitches and he should be alright."
"Why didn't someone cover his six?" Sonja asked, relived that he was gonna be okay but pissed that nobody was covering him.
"We had no idea there was a sniper. Apparently Kingman was working for someone bigger than we all know and he was more scared of them than us. Apparently they didn't want him talking to us. They took him out before he could tell us who they were."
The doctor came out. "I'm looking for the family of Christopher LaSalle?"
Sonja and Pride walked over. Sonja spoke first. "I'm his fiance."
Pride looked shocked but held his composure.
"Mr. LaSalle had about a five inch cut across the neck. We've stitched him up and he should be fine. He will have one heck of a scar but I'd say after a day or two of rest, he will be just fine. The nurse is beginning the discharge paperwork. You can take him home soon," the doctor told Sonja. Pride shook his hand and he left. Pride turned to Sonja.
"What?" she asked.
"Is there something to tell?" Pride asked.
"Like what?"
"Fiance? Christopher never said anything."
"He hasn't really asked me. But I love him, Pride, more than life itself. He and Caden are my world and I want my family to be whole. Hell, I'd marry him in this dinky hospital if it made him happy."
"Congratulations Sonja. You're good for him."
"Thanks."
"Gonna have to put the team into overdrive though with Christopher being out for a couple days."
Sonja looked at the ground before looking back at Pride. "Put me on the case."
"I'd love to Sonja but you're not FBI anymore."
"Nope, I'm NCIS. Fully reinstated as of tonight."
"How?"
"Director Vance came by to see me. Told me that I had shown so much promise here and that he wanted me back on the team. I asked about Chris and our relationship but Vance said as long as we could keep personal separate form the office, I can come back to the team."
Pride looked like a very proud father as he embraced Sonja. He couldn't believe she was coming home to the team.
Chris was wheeled out by a nurse and saw Sonja and Pride. "Did I miss something?"
Sonja looked at him, walked over and bent down to kiss him. "Not much Neanderthal but how about now more ER trips huh?"
"It was just a little bitty cut. Y'all are making it out to be a bigger deal than it is," Chris said, being all stoic.
"Well it's got you sidelined for the next couple days," Pride said, joining them.
"Sorry about that King. What are you gonna do?"
"Well, we still got four of us so we should be okay."
"Four?" Chris asked, puzzled.
"Yeah - me, Gregorio, Sebastian and Sonja."
"Huh?" Chris asked, looking at Sonja.
"Director Vance came by the house tonight. He reinstated me, effective tonight. I'm back on the team at NCIS."
"What about us?" Chris asked, thinking any chance of being together had been blown to smithereens.
"Vance said if we can be professional, we can stay together and on the team together."
"Hot damn woman!" Chris exclaimed as he reached up to pull her down to him. He kissed her again, his life returning to the new normal now. Other patients started looking at them.
"Maybe we should get Christopher home," Pride said.
"Let's go Country Mouse," Sonja said, pushing his wheel chair.
"Anything you say City Mouse," Chris said, smiling like a kid in a candy store.
