The next day, Steve and Catherine left home early. They went to the city. She would go to work and he would pick her up at the end of her workday. But first they went for breakfast.
"You're going to experience the best coffee in town," Catherine told him as he parked the car in front of the small diner.
"Good morning, Catherine," the waitress greeted her as they entered.
"Good morning, Susan. This is Steve," Catherine pointed to Steve and Susan smiled.
"Nice to meet you, Steve."
"Nice to meet you too, Susan," Steve replied.
"Lucky girl!" Susan whispered to Catherine and Catherine smiled at her.
They sat down and Catherine ordered for Susan. A few minutes later Susan put their breakfast on the table.
"I told Steve that he would try the best coffee in town," Catherine said to Susan.
"My coffee is famous, Steve. I hope you like it too and go around talking good about it," Susan said proudly.
Steve tasted the coffee in her presence and made a serious face. She looked at him expectantly.
"Wonderful!" Steve said aloud.
"Thank you," Susan was happy with the compliment.
"What about Kevin? Didn't he come with you today?" Catherine asked Susan.
"Yes, he came. He's inside playing," Susan replied.
"Bring my godson to breakfast with us."
"Your godson?" Steve asked.
"Yes, he's very cute, Steve. You'll love him," Catherine replied.
"Won't he get in the way of you two?" Susan asked.
"No. Bring him in so Steve can meet him."
Susan went and returned a few minutes later with a friendly little boy.
Catherine picked him up. "Steve, he is Kevin. He'll be three next month."
Steve smiled at the boy and took his hand to greet him. "Hi, Kevin."
"Hi," Kevin replied. He had breakfast with Steve and Catherine and then Catherine handed him back to Susan. "Bye, dear," Catherine told the boy and kissed his forehead.
"Bye, buddy," Steve said to Kevin and the boy waved to him.
Steve and Catherine left the diner and Steve walked her to the police station. "I'll pick you up later."
"Okay," Catherine kissed him and walked into the police station.
Steve drove around town, went into some stores, bought ingredients to prepare a special dinner for Catherine and then returned home.
"Hi Catherine. I thought you hadn't come to work. I didn't see your car outside," Alice told Catherine when she arrived at the police station late as usual.
"If I didn't come, I'd let you know."
Alice loved to be indiscreet and enjoyed irritating Catherine. "How was your day off with the handsome guy?"
"Great. Couldn't have been better," Catherine replied without taking her eyes off the computer screen.
"Really? That's great. Where is he from?" Alice wanted to know more.
Catherine answered a phone call and said she was already on her way.
"Where are you going? Don't think you'll be dating in the middle of office hours," Alice told her.
"Mister Jones has left home alone again and is probably lost around town. I'll go look for him," Catherine thought it was great to have a "case" to solve and not have to put up with Alice asking indiscreet questions all day.
"Why do you have to look for him? The family can do that."
"His mind is not good, remember? And I want to help," Catherine told her.
"Oh, that's right. I had forgotten."
Catherine went out to do the searching and expected to spend quite a bit of time away.
Steve tidied up the house, ate lunch, and then sat down on the couch to chat with Joan via video call.
"How are you, Uncle Steve?" Joan asked, but soon realized that he looked fine, seemed happy and relaxed.
"I'm fine, Joan. Thanks for helping me find her."
"You're welcome, Uncle Steve. Let me talk to her," Joan requested.
"She's working, Joan. I'm alone at home and I'll pick her up later."
"Oh, too bad." Joan lamented. "And how are you both?"
"We're fine, Joan. We're resuming our relationship little by little, no rush, no demands."
"Can I tell Mom? I don't like to hide anything from her."
"Of course, dear. I don't want you to hide anything from your mother either."
Steve talked to her for a while and then called the team to talk to each of them.
"When are you coming back, McGarrett? We're missing you," Tani told him.
"I don't know yet, Tani."
"And besides, your godson will be born soon," she added.
"When he is born I will meet him, Tani. Be sure of it."
Catherine found walking aimlessly by the side of the road and drove him home.
"Thank you so much, Catherine. I was so worried about him," Mrs. Jones told her.
"You're welcome, Mrs. Jones. But keep an eye on him, he was near the road and that is dangerous."
"I will, dear."
Catherine got into the car and the two were standing in the front door of the house waving to her. They were quite an elderly couple and Catherine thought it was very cute the way she treated him, "I wonder if Steve and I are going to grow old together."
At the end of the day, Steve went to pick Catherine up and, as usual, Martin had not arrived to take her place.
"That's absurd, Catherine! It's totally disrespectful."
Catherine sighed. "I've talked to Alice about it several times, but it's no use."
"Where does this guy live?" Steve asked.
A few minutes later, Steve rang the doorbell at Martin's house. He opened the door and was not happy to see Steve there.
"You're half an hour late. You're going to replace Catherine now!" Steve said firmly.
"And who are you to think you can boss me?" Martin told him.
"I'm a Navy Lieutenant Commander, head of the Hawaii Special Task Force, and I know a lot of people. I can ruin your police career with just one phone call. We work with the law and the law requires people of character. What you do to Catherine is evidence of your lack of character. You have five minutes to get to the police station." Steve turned his back on him and left.
Five minutes later, Martin arrived at the police station and Catherine left with Steve. "What did you tell him to get here so fast?" She asked before they got into the car.
"I just showed him my bad side," Steve smiled and pulled her closer. He kissed her and then they got in the car and drove away.
