Two months later...
Steve was at the airport waiting for Junior, Tani and Kai. He smiled when he saw them and walked hurriedly towards them.
"Hey!" Steve hugged Junior and then hugged Tani carefully because she was holding Kai on her lap and the boy was sleeping.
"Hey buddy!" Steve gave Kai a kiss on his forehead.
"I'm sorry, I know I was the one who was supposed to go visit Kai and not the other way around, but Kevin is too attached to me and he is still traumatized by everything that happened. When I leave the house without him and Catherine he always thinks I'm not coming back."
"It's okay, McGarrett. This is Kai's first trip and he's behaved wonderfully," Tani told Steve.
"And it's nice to see new places," Junior added.
"Why didn't you bring Kevin?" Tani asked.
"I don't like going out with him if Catherine isn't with us. If something happens and Catherine isn't there, it could jeopardize getting final custody of Kevin," Steve explained.
"You're right," Tani understood.
"And Catherine didn't come because she's been cleaning the house for two days. She says the house has to be very clean to receive a baby. She even borrowed a crib from her neighbor.
"We are going to stay in a hotel," Junior said and Steve did not agree.
"You're staying with us. It's a rustic house, not very big but it's comfortable and the place is beautiful. You'll like it."
Junior looked at Tani waiting for her response to Steve.
"Okay. Thanks," Tani replied.
"Then can we go?" Steve helped Junior with his bags and they headed toward the car.
"Do you guys want to stop at a snack bar for something to eat? We won't be home for another hour and a half."
"I do because I'm starving," Tani replied.
Steve took them to a restaurant and they ate lunch and talked about the team. "Danny is jealous that we are here," Junior said.
"I invited him to come visit us and he wouldn't come, he keeps making excuses not to come," Steve replied.
"He's just upset. He still can't get over the fact that you're off the island and off the team," Tani told Steve.
"Maybe I'll come back to the island when Catherine gets final custody of Kevin."
"That's wonderful, boss. What about the boy's mother? Has she been arrested?" Tani asked.
"No, she's still on the run. She called Catherine and asked to speak to Kevin. Catherine hesitated, but eventually allowed it. She told Kevin that Catherine would take better care of him than she would and that she would never come back. She told him she loved him, but a mother who truly loves a child doesn't abandon him."
"Poor little boy," Junior said.
"That phone call did more harm than good to him. After that he's afraid that Catherine or I won't come home. When one of us leaves he gets very distressed."
Catherine was sitting on a step of the porch while Kevin was playing in the backyard and looking down the narrow road every two minutes. "Is he coming back, Aunt Cath?"
"He will come back, my love. Be patient," Catherine replied.
"Okay," Kevin replied and continued to play with his toy car.
Kevin ran over to Steve when he saw him arriving with Junior, Tani and Kai. "You're back," Kevin said to Steve as Steve picked him up on his lap.
"But of course I'm back, buddy." Steve introduced Kevin to Tani and Junior and showed Kai to Kevin. "In a while he'll have grown up and you two will play together."
Kevin stared at Kai with a little jealousy.
"Hey!" Catherine came over smiling and hugged Junior and then Tani. "I'm so glad you guys came to visit us!"
"Can I pick him up?" Catherine asked Tani referring to Kai.
"Of course you can," Tani replied and Catherine took Kai on her lap.
Kevin was agitated on Steve's lap. "Hey buddy. Kai is a friend, he came to visit you." Steve kissed his forehead and Kevin put his arms around Steve's neck.
"Let's go inside," Catherine said to Tani and Junior.
Catherine showed the house to Tani and Junior, and Tani put Kai in the crib. "The neighbor's daughter already stands and tries to get out of the crib, so she lent the crib to Kai since her little girl can't sleep in it anymore."
"Thank her for me, Catherine," Tani said.
Junior and Steve went out onto the porch and Junior praised the place. "The house is very cozy and the view is beautiful. I love that lake."
Steve nodded. "Tell Uncle Junior what's in the lake, Kevin."
"A giant crocodile?" Junior asked Kevin to relax.
"No. Just fish." Kevin replied.
"And who feeds the fish, Kevin?" Steve asked.
"Me and you," Kevin replied.
Steve, Junior and Kevin walked to the lake. "That mountain is beautiful too, Steve."
"Yeah, we can go there tomorrow morning," Steve replied to Junior.
"Uncle Steve, can I feed the fish?" Kevin asked.
Steve looked at his watch. "It's still an hour away, Kevin. But that's okay, go ahead and ask Aunt Cath for the feed bowl."
Kevin walked toward the house as Steve followed him with his gaze.
"He's a good boy, isn't he?" Junior asked.
"Yes, he's a good boy," Steve replied.
"Are you happy?" Junior asked Steve.
"Yes, Junior. Catherine and Kevin are my family and I don't know how to live without them anymore."
