It's been fourteen years since Jacen Syndulla, son of Hera Syndulla and the late Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus, was born. After years of Sabine Wren searching, she finally found him after being mysteriously pulled in with the Phantom II in the realm of Mortis. She found day and night switching rapidly as well as scalding rain she had to avoid. Inside where the Father used to reside is where she found none other than Ezra Bridger meditating.
"Ezra? Is that you?", said Sabine in surprise.
"Sabine?!", exclaimed Ezra upon seeing her.
As they embraced, Ezra explained how the purrgil took him and Thrawn to the Unknown Regions where they got separated and how he woke up on the planet and studied Jedi artifacts and texts during his time there. Sabine then explained to Ezra how the Rebel Alliance overthrew the Empire and formed the New Republic. She also told him about Hera Syndulla's son, Jacen Syndulla and how gifted he was with the Force as a skilled pilot like his mother.
"No way! That's so cool!", Ezra reacted enthusiastically.
"Yeah, well... He's kind of accident-prone when it comes to his ability he inherited from Kanan who's not here to teach him. Do you think maybe you could train him?", said Sabine.
"Kanan told me his own training was limited, but I'll teach him everything he taught me. I owe it to him.", replied Ezra. After the spirit of the Father talked with the two, Ezra vowed to take Jacen on as his apprentice and allowed them to leave. They then traveled to Naboo where Hera was at and reunited. Ezra introduced himself to Jacen and told him all about his father's life as a Jedi.
"Your father was one of the greatest people I've ever known. He was like a surrogate father to me after I became an orphan. I can teach you everything he taught me; not only what it means to be a Jedi, but also the best kind of person you can be. I can teach you the ways of the Force...if you'd like."
"Sure.", replied Jacen smiling.
"Cool. We'll start your training first thing tomorrow.", said Ezra.
The following morning, Ezra began Jacen's training.
"Aren't Jedi supposed to have laser-swords or something?", asked Jacen.
"They're called lightsabers, but that doesn't make you a Jedi and first you need to learn how to wield the Force properly. Using a lightsaber can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. You need to learn to let the Force flow through your body before it can flow through a blade. Understand?", said Ezra.
"I think so.", replied Jacen.
"All right. Start by levitating this rock.", instructed Ezra.
As Jacen struggled, Ezra reminded him to let the Force flow through him before he managed to lift it.
After a few days of training, Jacen discovered a Jedi Temple on Ryloth through a Force vision which they opened together just as Ezra did with Kanan on Lothal. Jacen had to face the trials inside the temple alone while Ezra waited in its main hall.
"What am I supposed to find?", asked Jacen before one of the temple doors closed behind him.
"Nothing and everything, buddy!", replied Ezra.
"What do you mean?", asked Jacen.
"I don't know. It's just what your father told me.", replied Ezra just before the door shut completely.
After Jacen faced the trials the temple had given him, he saw the spirit of Yoda and told him why he wants to be a Jedi like his father before him. Ezra, however, saw the spirit of Kanan.
"I hear you've taken on my son as your apprentice.", he said.
"Yes. I owe it all to you.", replied Ezra.
"Shouldn't there be another reason?", asked Kanan.
"There is. He needs to be taught how to control his power. He tends to be clumsy and to me, he needs a teacher."
"That can't be done just yet.", replied Kanan.
"What do you mean?", asked Ezra.
"Kneel.", said Kanan with his lightsaber ignited. Ezra then knelt before the spirit of his master.
"Ezra Bridger, by the will of the Force and the path that's set before you, you may rise.", said Kanan as he moved his lightsaber over Ezra's shoulders.
"What did you just do?", asked Ezra.
"A Padawan shouldn't be training a Padawan, so you no longer are one. You are now a Knight of the Jedi Order and have my blessing to train my son.", replied Kanan.
"Train him well and look out for him for me.", he said as he and Ezra hugged each other good-bye.
As soon as Ezra and Jacen were outside of the Jedi Temple, Ezra presented him with his father's lightsaber.
"This was your father's lightsaber. Sabine retrieved it on Lothal after he died. It's yours now. Use it well and don't lose it. Also remember that it's supposed to be used only for defense.", explained Ezra.
"Understood... Master.", Jacen replied smiling.
