As Ron sunk deeper and deeper into his beloved's mind, he couldn't help noticing what a blank place it was. He had imagined her mind to be awash with information flying about in all directions. Instead, as he penetrated the first lair of her mind, he came across a white wall blocking his entrance any further. Thinking about it he thought that maybe her mind was how he imagined but she had created obstacles blocking her exits to the world of the living and in doing so was also blocking his entrance into her subconscious.
Knowing his wife well Ron knew that his wife wouldn't completely lock her mind and that been a survivor of one of the worst wars of the wizarding world she would always have an escape root even if she didn't know it herself. That meant that all Ron had to do was break through her defences, finding their weaknesses. The only problem was even though Ron was a known strategist; he was going up against the mind of his wife, the brains of The Golden Trio and most intimidatingly the Brightest Witch of the Age.
The knowledge of who he was going up against left Ron slightly stumped but if he couldn't get through his wife's defence, he was certain no one could. Face set hard with concentration Ron thought of how to get past the wall, fiddling absentmindedly with his wand. He had already tried to climb over it, but it had seemed endless, every time he got remotely close to the top, he would look up to see that the wall had extended, making his journey more difficult. In the end he had climbed back down, seeing no point as he would never reach the top. So that's how he came to be fiddling his wand, face hard in concentration wondering whether his wand would work within Hermione's mind and if it does would it be harmful to her.
Seeing no choice but to try and use his wand he shakily raised his wand arm and as both Hermione and Umbridge had once done he screamed Bombarda, blowing the wall apart. Once the dirt from the explosion had settled Ron took a tentative step forward into what he knew to be Hermione's childhood street.
Walking forward down the road Ron took in the stillness of the Street, completely different to the way it was when he had been here only days ago when visiting his wife's parents for Mrs Grangers birthday. Ron turned the corner at the end of the road and the silence ended.
Around the corner from the Grangers was a small playground where all the local children played after school. Walking up to the park Ron saw all the children playing together apart from a small busy haired girl who sat alone in a corner a book in hand, crying silently as the other children joked about her.
"Hey!" Ron shouted walking up to the children, but the children didn't appear to hear him. He went to grab one of them, a boy who appeared to be older than the others and the leader, but his hand went straight through. It was like been in a pensive.
Realising he couldn't touch them or tell them Ron continued his way down the road, trying to find his Hermione, the one he could help. As he walked, he went through all the bad memories Hermione had faced. He saw her Grandma dying as Hermione sat next to her, he saw he himself making her cry in first year and then again in forth. He saw the war, his brother's death and Hermione been tortured by Bellatrix.
Finally, he found a cage at the end of the path. Inside the cage sat Hermione, his Hermione, huddled in a corner crying her eyes out as the worst of the memories he'd passed on his journey played out before her, the only difference been that the children lost in time took on the role of their parents or others that had been killed or injured during the war.
Ron walked into the cage ignoring the screams of his little Rosie who was been tortured in the place of her mother and encircled his wife in an embrace, pulling her close to his chest as her fists hit him and she begged him to let her go.
"Shush I'm here, it's safe, it's just a dream Hermione, Rose is safe, they're all safe." he tried to calm her.
"No, they're not, it's my entire fault! Why did I have that Time Turner? Why? They could be anywhere. I just want them back safe at home. she collapsed against him all efforts to fight him overthrown by the need for comfort from the only person who knew her more than she knew herself.
"We know where they are sweetie, we've found them. They are at Grimmauld Place the summer before our Fifth Year. They will be safe there the Order will protect them, and mum will spoil them. We need you Hermione, we need to build a new Time Turner and only you can do it. You need to wake up, we need you Hermione. we need you.
Ron knew the moment Hermione began to wake up because he felt the same feeling he had felt leaving his own body as he slowly rose out of her subconscious. He hovered ghost like over both their bodies, long enough to see her startled eyes at his appearance before slowly sinking down to reclaim his own body.
