Chapter 4

The Bet

To Freckle, the sight of a party in which nothing could go wrong was one of the best feelings in his life, at least according to him. Without being dragged into Rocky's pyromaniacal schemes was a great feeling, especially when he could buy a ticket to the nearest baseball game or sit and laugh about old times with Ivy at the café. And when Rocky did show up, he usually stayed with them and laughed with them as well.

He sighed, and prepared to take a long drink of Chardonnay from his tumbler when someone prodded him. It was Ivy, and she was looking pleased with something.

"Gonna drag me into one of your nefarious schemes again?" he said, remembering the first time they'd met, and that was over a bad case of allergies from a horseradish sandwich.

"As a matter of fact, yes," Ivy said. Freckle looked nervous for a moment. Ivy sighed.

"No, silly," she said, pointing to a pair in the corner. "I wanna make a bet regarding those two." Freckle followed her finger and saw that she was referring to Rocky and Amanda. As he watched, the two of them were laughing about something, like friends of old. Freckle knew what bet she was going to make.

"You wanna see who kisses who first," he said, taking a drink.

"Exactly," Ivy said, watching them mingle around the bar. "So, who is it going to be, Freckie?"

"Hmmm…the obvious choice is Rocky," Freckle said. "He's always a hothead when it comes to things like this."

"Well… I guess you're right. My money's on Rocky as well," Ivy said. She raised her own glass of whiskey. "Shall we seal the deal already?"

Freckle said. "20 dollars," he said, and they clinked the glasses together.
