It didn't take long for Shiro and Coran to enter the infirmary. The others trailed behind equally worried and excited about Pidge.
Lance didn't move from his spot on the bed other than to turn his head to acknowledge the others.
Tablet in hand Coran came over to check on Pidge. He confirmed her vitals and her status saying that she should be just fine.
"How soon can we get Matt here?" Lance asked. "She asked for him before she passed out:"
"I can call him and see if he can get here." Allura answered, already heading for the bridge.
Movement next to Lance drew his attention. Pidge opened her eyes and they instantly locked on Lance. They began to widen in a panic and Lance was instantly up off the bed, hands raised as if calming a spooked animal. In the same movement Pidge sat up her body tense as she flicked her gaze from Lance to the others remaining in the room. She relaxed slightly when she saw Shiro. Her breathing faltered as her panic began to rise.
"Hey, it's okay. Just take a breath." Lance said. He settled onto the bed next to Pidge's movements slow. "There was a lot of information thrown at you earlier." Pidge didn't say anything as she allowed her gaze to drop to her lap.
Without thinking Lance reached out and took her hand in his. He only meant it as a comfort but the look on her face and the feeling of her jerking her hand out of his was like a knife to the chest. He didn't move for several seconds, the movement playing over and over in his head, stabbing his heart over and over. By the time he snapped out of it his chest was pouring blood and tears burned in his eyes.
"Right," he said, standing stuffing his hands into his pockets casually. He nodded towards Shiro. "I'm sure you might be more comfortable talking to someone you know." He forced himself to walk away from the wide-eyed girl sitting on the bed. He exited the room each step away causing more pain in his already aching chest. His mind was occupied by one echoing thought.
She doesn't remember.
One minute Lance was watching Pidge's back as she came towards them, sacrificing only a second to acknowledge Shiro, the next he was picking himself up from the ground, ears ringing and the echoes of the blast still sounding. When they died down the room was quiet, almost too quiet. He glanced at the others who also were picking themselves up from the floor. Worry coated each one of their faces. The bombs they had placed weren't supposed to go off until Hunk sent the signal from the tablet. So what had happened?
Limping to the doorway that he had been thrown from he looked out into what used to be a room with a control panel. Sentries broken and sparking bodies were scattered all over the place, some even embedded in the metal walls.
It wasn't the broken control panel that drew Lance's attention, not even the shattered metal was enough for the guttural cry that erupted from his throat. No, it was the figure in the green and white paladin suit who laid face down. The armor was nearly non-existent, bloody skin showed it places where the black under suit had ripped. The helmet had been knocked off, its side smashed in.
Lance staggered to Pidge's side; his own leg having been pierced with a shard of metal. It didn't matter, none of it did, his leg could go ahead and bleed for all he cared. The pain from his leg was nothing compared to the feeling of his heart being ripped from his chest.
"Pidge!" He called his voice cracking with the word. The tears were already building. "Katie please be alright." Her hair covered the majority of her face but that didn't hide the blood that trickled from her face and soaked her hair. He rested a hand on her shoulder, one of the few places the armor hadn't been removed from, "Katie, please answer me." His hands shook as he went to check for a pulse not really sure if he was feeling it.
A second pair of hands entered his line of vision, encouraging him to step back, although he didn't move the hand that rested on her shoulder. He did his best to ignore the alarming amount of red that was covering her body. He knew that the image would never be gone from his mind, it would always be there even after she made it out of the Cryopod.
"She's still alive."
Lance nearly sagged with relief as Shiro voiced the words. Tears that he had forced himself to hold back finally broke free. Hunk and Keith appeared moments later. Hunk came to Lance, helping him to his feet. Lance's eyes were glued to Pidge as Shiro and Keith lifted her from the ground being careful of her injuries.
She's still alive.
It was very unlike Lance to brood, Keith absolutely, it was expected of the red paladin. If Keith wasn't brooding something was wrong. Lance scoffed at the thought of alarms blaring throughout the castle the second Keith showed an ounce of a second emotion. Though in passing years, Lance could admit, Keith had changed drastically from the hothead that first entered the garrison.
"I didn't mean to walk out like I did, I just didn't know what to do." Lance said. He was sitting on the edge of Allura's post in the bridge arms resting on his thighs. He was staring out at the expanse of space in front of him, thousands of twinkling lights blinking back at him. They made him feel smaller than he already felt. He couldn't get the look of Pidge's face out of his head.
"Yeah, we all witnessed that little exchange." Keith said. Lance turned his head just as Keith winced at his own words. "Sorry. Too abrasive."
Lance turned his attention back to the stars, his shoulders dropping. "She doesn't remember me, Keith. I could see it in her eyes." He said gesturing to his own. "There's…Nothing there."
"Coran says there's a good chance her memory will come back." Keith replied.
"But there's a chance that it won't!" Lance snapped. He stood abruptly walking a few feet away from Keith. "I can't get the image out of my head, Keith." He placed a hand on his hip the other he ran through his hair. "It all happened so fast, and there was so much blood. I thought I was going to lose her."
"But you didn't."
"She's alive, but that doesn't mean I didn't lose her."
