Chapter 21
High Society
August the 2nd onwards. The Season.
August flew by in a whirl of balls, dinners, garden parties and social events, Harry and Ginny attending each one that was hosted by an alliance family, together with Draco, Daphne, Hermione, Neville, with Sirius accompanying Bella and Narcissa. Each of the alliance family events had been specifically arranged to allow Harry's attendance, he and Ginny were guests of honour at each of those events, the hosts putting them in place of honour next to them where appropriate. It meant the couple learnt much about each family, what they brought to the alliance and what they hoped to gain by its re-emergence. They also learnt more about their own role in the grouping and society, socially and politically. There was no let up in their training either, so it had been an exhausting, yet thoroughly enjoyable month for them.
Even the Ministry event, which had been an exercise in tolerating a fawning Ministerial staff, had been more enjoyable than they anticipated. Even the behaviour of the staff, who, it seemed, became more obsequious to them the higher up they were, with a few exceptions, of course, had not spoilt the evening too much. Other than that the Ball, with an informal supper had been an interesting mix of socialising and politicking, they were careful not to show allegiance to anyone, other than Alliance members. They all knew, from Susan, that moves were afoot to remove Fudge as Minister, the moment he had dug himself a deep enough hole to ensure he could not crawl out of it. On the advice of Amelia and Amos, Harry and Ginny took a polite interest, but gave no opinion to the many who seemed to want to discuss the matter with them quietly. They took the advice, knowing that in the event, society would be influenced by their view on who they wanted as a replacement. In the meantime it was better they remained quiet on the matter, so that as smooth a transition as possible could happen.
The Ministry event was a political hot bed, with Harry and Ginny being most sought after. Compared with the other events, which were mainly concerned with Social politics. None more so than the event hosted by Neville and his Grandmother, which seemed to be a mire of intrigue around who was with who, how suitable they were and who would be a better match. It was interesting to watch how the mothers of their contemporaries behaved at the early events, but it seemed the Longbottom event was where it was all to come to a head. It was the mothers who were behind it all, manoeuvring their offspring towards partners they approved of. Politely removing their son or daughter away from company they did not see as suitable for some reason, pushing them towards those they wished them to be with. Oddly it seemed to work, though more often than not, not as the Mother wished. Despite the maternal parents' efforts, it was amusing to see couples forming to their own wishes. At which point the Fathers, who had successfully stayed out of it until now, would suddenly find that their offspring's stubbornness was all their fault. By the end of the event, the newly formed couples were happy, the Mothers frustrated and the Fathers were trying to keep the peace and Lady Longbottom was relieved it was over. They would not be expected to host this event again for some time at least.
At the following event it was as if the pressure of the previous one had been lifted. The Mothers had calmed enough to simply enjoy the event, Fathers smiled indulgently as their Daughter enjoyed the company of their chosen partner or proudly as their son indulged theirs. The couples themselves simply enjoyed themselves, free of the anxiousness that they would be left on the shelf, that had come from their well-meaning, if misguided, Mother. It was interesting to note that many of the pairings stuck for the rest of the season at least, and those that didn't, simply faded with no apparent animosity.
Harry was surprised to find that even the families with younger children were involved in such matters at the events they attended. Although it was not romance they were looking at for their children, it seemed that the competition for play dates with the right families, was just as fierce. Watching as one mother tried to, quite insistently, encourage their toddler to become interested in playing with another, while both toddlers simply wanted to play with the toy they had, Harry suddenly had a realisation. He looked to Ginny, who was also watching the scene with some amusement.
Quietly, so he would not be overheard, he said to her. "My God, Gin, when we have kids, everyone is going to want them to be friends with their child, with that kind of attention, how on earth can we give them a normal childhood? It will be uncontrollable, everyone will want to manipulate them, how will we know who is being genuine and who is simply after the bragging rights?"
Ginny's expression changed to horror as she turned her head to look at him, as she considered the implications of what they had seen and what it meant for them.
They had only had a few days without an event during the month, including Ginnys birthday, which they had ensured was memorable.
11th August. Day 45.
Following the same morning routine as they had on Harry's birthday, they were again later than Sirius would like to breakfast, and again they teased him. Neville arrived soon after breakfast as did Daphne, the first of the guests to arrive. They had decided to visit Ashmole Hall, they had met the head Elf at the Abbey, but this would be the first visit to the house and grounds. They Flooed to the Hall, arriving in the entrance hall of the Lincolnshire coast house. It had been well looked after, decorated warmly and luxuriously. The six teens walked into the house proper to be greeted by the head Elf, and the house staff of ten, lined up formally. Ginny insisted each was introduced to her by name, she assured each that she was pleased to meet them and proud of how well they had looked after the house. The room they were in had a seating area, but was notable for the Grand Staircase, doors on either side of it behind the lower flight. It rose halfway up the back wall, before splitting with a flight to both left and right up to the balcony on the next floor.
They toured the house, which was more modest than Peverell Abbey, though that was not difficult, but it still had three suites and nine other bedrooms, on the floor above the sizeable ground floor rooms. There were good views over lawns to the sea from the back of the house, while the front looked out over formal gardens, sheltered from the coastal weather by the building itself. A walled kitchen garden, with a Vinery, which was full of bunches of Grapes, hanging from the vines stood close to the side door of the house. There was a small lake with a crown like fountain, overlooked by a summer house made of stone at the other end of the formal paths through tightly clipped Yew hedges.
They walked down the lawn to the beach, which was mostly soft sand and part of a seemingly endless coastline, which stretched as far as the eye can see in both directions. Neville recognised Samphire growing in the sand, a small fleshy plant, which was good to eat. There was a private beach house, which they made use of, spending most of the day on the beach, paddling and swimming. The distance from the town they could see up the coast, affording them exclusive use of this area, the elves happily bring lunch to the Beach house for them.
They returned to Grimmauld place and got ready for a party, which all the Weasleys, except Molly and Ron, attended, as well as many Alliance contemporaries.
The days following they resumed their training, and attending society events, they hardly seemed to have another moment to themselves, except in their rooms at the end of each day. Luckily for them, the day before their own three events, to be held on the final day of the season, was a day free of other events. Collectively it would be attended by the largest number of guests of any during the season.
29th August. Day 63.
They had arrived at the Abbey, venue of the events, that morning, Bella, Narcissa, and Andromeda immediately began rushing round panicking that nothing would be ready in time. The Elves, meanwhile, simply got on with the tasks required and ensured the rest of them were able to relax. Eventually the three women were convinced to leave things to the Elves. They joined the others and spent the rest of the day at leisure, only occasionally coming up with a thought about what may not have been done. Only for Harry to summon Elie, who would reassure the ladies it had been or would be taken care of.
Eventually Elie managed to distract the trio of sisters, sufficiently to keep them occupied, so Harry, Ginny, and Sirius could keep an appointment with the Vicar of the church. The three walked down to the Vicarage, enjoying the good weather. The crowd outside the cottage did not notice them pass, Mary waved to them from her front window as they passed. It was busy small town, although it was not market day there were still a large number of visitors wandering the streets. They saw there was a steady flow of people going in and out of the churchyard, many heading for the Potter grave. The Vicar greeted them at the door, and they introduced themselves.
"It is such a pleasure to meet you my Lords, my Lady. I, of course, know who you are, you were the first baby I christened here, Lord Potter, so sad that it was so soon after that when we had to bury your parents, poor souls. They were a wonderful couple, I often wondered if we would see you return."
Harry was surprised, but happy with the comment, it was another small piece of his life before Privet Drive. "Please call me Harry, sir. After all if you christened me I think that gives you more right than most."
The man broke into a genuine smile. "Why thank you, Harry, and please all of you, I am Paul." He turned to Sirius. "I of course remember you Sirius, it is my pleasure to see you again, I was pleased to receive your letter. How remarkable that Lily turns out to be your sister, I have to say I did wonder all those years ago if there was a link, while you were not identical, there was certainly a resemblance."
Sirius grinned. "Good to see you again too Paul, you still keep that Thomas the Tank book in your seat in the church?"
"Oh yes, of course, but you and James, God rest him, are still the only ones who know about it." He replied. "The layout upstairs has changed a bit since you last saw it though, have you time to come and see? I know it's a big day tomorrow, I am looking forward to it, my thanks for inviting me by the way."
"No problem, Paul, but I am sorry we have to get back." Sirius replied. "Next time, hopefully."
"Right, well we had better get on." Cups of tea and a cake appeared in front of them, Harry and Ginny looked surprised, Paul laughed. "Ah, he didn't tell you, did he. I, too, am a graduate of Hogwarts, Muggle born, though I am a little younger than Sirius, I was there soon enough after him, that he was still talked about. Anyway, I have spoken with the Bishop about your request, and while definitely unusual, he can see no reason it cannot be done. You will have to get a new stone though, I am sorry but, I also have to see the design before it is made, make sure it is not inappropriate at all."
Harry thought for a moment. "I don't see that being a problem, we are told there is a mason locally, it would be good to have it done there."
Paul smiled. "Oh yes, he is good too, his work is sought for a number of projects. I am sure Stephen would be pleased to do it for you, he is a Muggle, so it might take a while to carve, but it will be worth it. He might even be able to do something with the old stone for you."
"I was wondering what would happen to it, its not like anyone else could use it." Ginny said.
"No, but it could be re-carved or something, I am sure, anyway see what he says. Now the wording, what did you have in mind?" Paul asked.
"Sirius and I spoke about this, and apart from the names we though keep it as it is." Harry answered.
Sirius added. "So the change would be her proper name, then it would say, known as Lily Potter. We wanted to acknowledge the name she lived under still."
Paul nodded. "Excellent, that sounds perfect. It is an extraordinary situation, so it is good to give her, her name back and let her have what she lived with, somehow very fitting, I look forward to dedicating it when it is put in place. Now Harry, tell me, is your Grandfathers project still operational?"
The trio left to return to the Abbey about twenty minutes later, returning through the visitors and residents still milling about. Mary was near her gate watching for them, and ran to hug first Harry, then Ginny when she saw them. Although this drew some attention from passers-by and a few of those looking at the cottage, it was also a distraction which diverted attention from who it was that she was greeting. After a quick chat with her, Mary happily left them at her gate, and the three made it past the crowd and out of sight up the driveway.
The noise of activity on the railway, near the sheds, drew the attention of Sirius and Harry once they arrived at the house, finding the others sat on the terrace overlooking the lake. Draco accompanied them walking over the lawn towards the sheds to see what was going on, while the ladies caught Ginny in discussions about last minute details for the events the next day. It was a pleasant walk, the three of them chatting amicably as they went. Harry suddenly chuckled at a thought.
"Knut for them Harry?" Draco asked.
Harry shrugged. "I was just thinking! If anyone on the Hogwarts express had said that by the end of the summer, you and I would be chatting as we are. In such friendly terms, as we walked over the grounds of a mansion, I would have thought they were mad. Yet here we are, doing exactly that, as not just friends, but cousins and that is just one thing that has changed for us. I can't remember a more eventful summer, even for me."
"Well, Hermione did say life with you was interesting." Draco grinned. "Personally I have not often been happier, freer, perhaps. I know what you mean though, it is a lot of change in a short time, I am glad it has happened though. That said, I do wonder just how interesting my life is going to get."
"Oh, probably very, if what Hermione says is anything to go by." Harry laughed.
"Ah well, at least I know." Draco joined his laughter.
They reached the sheds, there was a flurry of activity as the Elves were preparing trains for the next day, and their presence was noted. The doors to the roundhouse were closed, but with the activity on the sidings, they would not have ventured over the rails. A small tank engine was shunting wagons into place to be loaded with equipment to be taken round the grounds to be set up the next morning. Once loaded the wagons were shunted to join a train, one for each venue in the grounds. It seemed that the Elves had used their magic to produce the different trucks required, the little locomotive hurrying about to ensure they were placed where needed, loaded, then taken to the appropriate rake being assembled. The longest rakes being assembled contained the parts for the rides for the fair, and fencing for the petting zoo, in open wagons and vans. They could see wooden finger posts, giving directions to the various attractions and facilities planned for each area were loaded along with everything else needed. Rather than disturb the Elves, the three climbed the steps to the Signal box, from where it was all being controlled. It was the first time any of them had been in the box, which was a hive of activity. When they entered, they were greeted by an Elf who was overseeing what was happening, and they assured him that they just wanted to see what was going on. The room they had entered offered by far the best view of the entire area of the sheds and yard, they could see everything that was going on below. A plan of the yard had been enlarged above the windows and an Elf was operating a bank of levers to control the signals and points as needed. Another Elf was on a phone, relaying instructions about what paths needed to be set to enable the locomotive to take the wagons to where they were needed. At the far end of the room, another pair of elves were keeping an eye on a train that was out on the line. They were not as busy as the others, and explained they were overseeing a train with a track gang on it, who were ensuring that all was in good working order around the whole railway infrastructure.
They stayed, watching the activity, for an hour, before Elie popped in to tell them that they needed to return to get ready for their evening meal. Refusing the offer for a train to take them back, they did not want to add to the work unnecessarily, the three men set off back over the lawns.
All the activity on the Railway had ceased when they settled to eat dinner, that evening, outside on the terrace overlooking the lake. They enjoyed watching the sun sink over the horizon, before they all retired for the night, not too late, the next morning was going to be busy.
30th August. Day 64.
Harry, Ginny Draco and Tonks walked out onto the balcony, overlooking the grounds, after breakfast to watch preparations for the afternoon. At first, they were able to enjoy the peace of the grounds, disturbed only by the noise of activity over by the engine sheds where the locomotives were being made ready. Harry had ventured over to the sheds after they had returned the day before. He had seen lines of wagons, many conjured for the event he suspected, being loaded with supplies and equipment. Locomotives and full rakes of coaches were being cleaned and polished in readiness. Two trains had been operating then, one ensuring the railway was ready, the other taking the grounds Elves from all their properties together with tools, plants from the greenhouses and equipment to make sure the grounds were at their best.
As they heard the signal box clock struck nine an engine whistle sounded and the first train left the sheds carrying Elves in its ten coaches, taking them round to where they were to work. It was followed by two more, all three heading down the side of the lake. They heard three more setting off in the other direction, they were carrying equipment, including the parts that would be built into the fairground, to where they were needed.
At each station Elves disembarked to prepare that area for the Garden party. It wasn't long before the trains were passing each other on the loops at the stations and the whole of the grounds had areas of activity where different attractions and events were going to take place. An hour later the boats on the lake had all been checked and the two capable of carrying passengers, were ferrying elves, provisions, and equipment to the summer house on the island. Out on the main lake the model ships were cruising, rehearsing the display they would perform later. By eleven the frequency of trains had slowed, as almost everything had been delivered to where it needed to be and the fair had been constructed, the rides were now being checked and tested. Harry and Ginny had moved outside during the morning, where Daisy had been chasing the trains, but on spotting the couple, bounded over to them, laying on the ground where they could pet her.
Inside the house Sirius was busy keeping out of the way of Bella, Narcissa and Andromeda, all of whom had resumed panic mode and along with Elie they were rushing about the house, ensuring all would be ready. The house itself would be out of bounds to most of the visitors to the garden party, except for V.I.P. Guests who would gather in the entrance hall to be taken to the opening. Of course the family would be able to use the house at any time, but it would come into its own later as the venue for the dinner and ball. The Garden party was the largest of the events though, hundreds of people, were expected, most of magical society would be there for it. The later two events, while still large, were more restricted. They would be attended mainly by Alliance people, Wizangamot and Heads of departments at the Ministry, along with some invited guests. The kitchens were a hive of activity, preparing food to be served at the various summer houses and Marquees dotted around the grounds as well as beginning to prepare for the later events. The teams of Elves had been brought in from all the Potter, Black and Ashmole properties and were working well together in teams. Each of them assigned to their own tasks, from cooking to operating the fairground rides, arrivals, and crowd control to serving the refreshments.
It was half past eleven when Harry and Ginny returned to their rooms to change, ready for the Garden party, the gates were opening to admit guests at midday. Even though this was actually Draco and Narcissa's event, the whole family were going to act as hosts allowing them all to release a little steam and enjoy the event as well. Even so the two Malfoys did need to give each guest a chance to greet them during the afternoon.
At the stroke of twelve the gates were opened and the apparition and port key arrival points activated. Many of the guests had spent the morning in Godric's Hollow, so arrived on foot, through the gates, to be directed along a newly built path. Once they had crossed the rails, two Elves operated gates to stop them from crossing if a train was ready to cross, they followed the path from the drive. Walking straight to the stables station, where trains waited to take them past the curtain wall and sheds, to the ruins in the grounds where the event would be opened by Narcissa and Draco. With a train on each platform, and elves ensuring each was full before departure, trains were despatched efficiently. When one departed, an empty one replaced it ready to be filled. The Apparition arrivals were in the stables' courtyard, while port keys arrived at intervals on the lawn and the people they brought directed to the station as well. While their guests arrived, the family prepared for the day in privacy, knowing all was in order.
Albus Dumbledores month had not been one of pleasure, as he fought to keep his position at the school, he had barely hung on to it. He rested as much as he could, trying to regain as much of his strength as he could, refraining from using magic, he hoped this would aid rebuilding his core. He knew he was being watched closely, but he had no trouble keeping a low profile, he had received no invitations all season. Knowing well what events had been held and when, he knew that Harry and Ginny had been guests a good number of them, they had been vaunted at each of them. They were honoured guests, their attendance seen as a prize worthy of note by the host family, just as having his presence at them had once been. He knew today was the last of the season, he also knew today was the day of the Potter and Black events, how could he not, the media had reported a lot about it for most of the month.
Even with their growing popularity and influence, he was determined to regain control and restore things to how they should be as far as possible. He knew he could not put the genie completely back in the bottle, to quote a Muggle saying that had always amused him. Though he could regain control and guide the two back to the path he had ordained, he believed. Since that day at Privet Drive, he had waited. He knew better than to try to regain Harry in public now, he knew the Dursley's would never take the boy back either. That avenue had completely closed, with the actions taken against them, no amount of manipulation would restore that. He was still puzzled about that, why had Potter taken such drastic steps against them? Certainly he knew of the tales of his life there, but they were just stories surely, they had to be exaggerated, he couldn't for a moment accept any family would treat a member that badly, it was inconceivable. It was a puzzle he would have to resolve once he had the couple back in his sway, that would clearly only happen once they were back in the Castle, where he could influence them each day. He anticipated the start of term would be the beginning of setting things right, the Hogwarts express could not arrive soon enough so far as he was concerned.
The headmaster was not the only one impatient for the start of term, Delores Umbridge was settling into her rooms at the Castle, putting the pieces of her plan together. She would do as the Minister asked, she would Dumbledores stooge, but always in her own way, for her own benefit. The Minister had betrayed her, but she would lull him with her information. The headmaster old and losing his power, but she would help him feel secure, she would use them both as rungs on the ladder back up where she belonged. Her reputation would be restored, at the expense of theirs if necessary, at the cost of any who stood in her way. Her first loyalty was to herself, not the School, or it's headmaster, nor the Minister and Ministry, she would do anything to regain her status and more. She knew she also needed to control Potter, the jumped up whelp had become too popular for to easily bring him to heel. Which meant she had to gain the loyalty of the other students, a process she didn't imagine would be difficult for one moment, they were only impressionable children after all. She would begin endearing herself to them at the opening feast, she had written a speech she would deliver as she was introduced. She knew it was a break in tradition, but it was necessary if her plan was to stand any chance of getting an early foothold. The speech was written, and she would deliver it in a way that would reassure all the children that they could trust her implicitly. Once achieved and Potter found himself isolated, she would be able to put him in his place, giving the headmaster what he wanted. A compliant, broken pawn, then it would be easy to take over the school, giving the Ministry control over education and elevating her in the esteem of her peers. She would be the one in charge then, with two powerful men, the minister, and Headmaster only too willing to show their gratitude to her and give her what she wanted. Then she would strike at both of them, bring them down as she had been. Both believed she was a tool for them to use as they wished, no one got away with that, no more than anyone could make a fool of her, as the Potter brat had, with impunity.
Harry stood at one of the windows at the front of the house, watching the scene below. The Elves were efficiently ensuring all went well with the arrivals, the Ministry had sent a team of officers to help with security and patrolling the area, but no one without an invitation would be able to pass the wards. Daisy was rolling around the lawn in ecstasy as train after train went by. The Elves had been forced to erect a barrier, so that she didn't roll over anyone who arrived by Portkey, that was something they would need to look at if they held such an event again. He had watched as the V.I.P. Guests were escorted to the front door, he was proud of how well the Elves were organising everything, and he could see their pride at doing it as well. He had watched proceedings, since he had got changed half an hour ago. Knowing he would have to go downstairs soon, with the others, to welcome the VIP's and then travel to the Abbey ruins where all the guests were gathering, he was enjoying these last few moments before entering the fray.
Ginny came and stood at his side, the flow of people was reducing and the number of trains going by was slowing. They would soon be sending the trains round to clear the line for their own train. The others would be waiting to pick up passengers to take them round the upper grounds to the various attractions from the station next to the ruins.
"It's time love." She whispered, taking his arm.
He nodded and let her guide him to the Balcony above from where the main stairs led down. Sirius, Bella, Draco, and Narcissa were waiting for them. "All ready?" Harry asked.
"As we shall ever be." Narcissa answered.
"Off we go then." Bella encouraged.
They went down the stairs, in line, across the steps. Harry and Ginny in the centre as the owners of the Venue, Narcissa and Draco to their left as the hosts of this part of the day, Sirius and Bella on the right of the young couple. A silence fell amongst those waiting below, as their approach was noticed. The guests gathering at the bottom, Hermione, Neville, and his Grandmother stood with the three Tonks at the front of the group, they were to join the six in the family carriage on the train. Although many of the group gathered at the bottom of the stairs were what Tonks had called duty invitations, they had ensured that amongst them were also the heads of the Alliance families with their wives and children. So, there were also friendly faces there as well.
Two thirds of the way down the six stopped and waited for all the shuffling for position, mostly amongst the duty guests, before Harry spoke.
"My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Peverell Abbey. In a moment you shall be taken through to our transport to the opening of the Garden Party, where the other guests are awaiting our arrival. Our Elves will show you to your allocated seats, please follow their instructions. However, as a general guide, Wizangamot and Ministry Personnel who are not part of our Alliance shall be in the first four coaches, so will be going through first. The next coaches are for Alliance members and their families, then our Family shall join us. I believe our transport awaits us, so please follow the Elves, please do not stray from the route they show you, or you may get left behind, thank you."
With that the house Elves began guiding people out to the platform where the train was waiting for them.
The six joined their friends and Harry turned to Draco and Narcissa. "That's me done for now, over to you guys for the Garden Party." He grinned.
"Gee thanks Harry." Draco laughed.
A few moments later Elie came over to them. "That's the Ministry aboard, although the Minister felt he should be in the family coach with you. Especially when he saw that Madam Bones and Her niece had forgotten to wait here with you, and were shown into it with Miss. Granger's parents. We got him seated in his proper place in the end though, the others are almost on board as well my Lord."
"Well done Elie, he can be awkward when he wants to be. I'm glad you got Hermione's parents through first, they are a little nervous, being the only Muggles here this afternoon. Neville and his Grandmother have agreed to look after them along with Hermione. I guess it is time that we came through to the platform as well, best not keep them waiting." Harry replied. "Oh by the way, has Hagrid found Daisy yet?"
"Yes My Lord." Elie replied as they walked through the house to the platform. "I am not sure which is more excited, Daisy with all the trains, or master Hagrid with Daisy. They are playing with each other on the lawn, I expect he might remember the Garden party eventually."
Harry laughed. "Never mind, so long as they are both happy."
Two elves held the doors open to allow them to pass onto the platform, beside which stood a magnificent new apple green coloured locomotive. It was large, a long boiler with large cab at one end and strange looking front at the other. While the boiler barrel itself was visibly tubular, the front smoke box area had cladding that ran up from the frame, forming full height smoke deflectors, the smoke box door was set back between the deflectors and slightly sloped back. The locomotive ran on Eight large driving wheels between two small ones under the smoke box and another pair beneath the cab. A good-sized corridor tender was coupled between locomotive and coaches, holding plenty of coal and water for what was a powerful looking locomotive. A name plate was visible on the smoke deflector, it read. "Lady Ginevra."
"Oh my!" Ginny exclaimed when she saw it. "Was that your idea Harry?"
"The Elves at the sheds asked if they could name it after you my love, I just agreed. Apparently they are building another, but with the same nose end as the streamliner that took us round the first time we were here, which they tell me is an A4 class, to name after me. So do you like it?" Harry replied.
"Oh yes." Ginny grinned, just as the deep tone of the engines whistle sounded, and the locomotive began to slowly move forward.
Titchy came over. "They are just moving the train, so your carriage is here, rather than you all walking the length of the platform to it." He told them.
The train was a long one, their coach was at the back, the observation coach, fourteenth in the rake. The moment it stopped, the doors flew open, and a uniformed elf stood beside each one, holding it back, so they could board. Once inside and seated Harry glanced out over the grounds. The two boats were ready, waiting by the shoreside quay on the lake. The funfair rides were running, and he could see the plumes of smoke from the locomotives pulling their trains to their starting points, from where they would carry the crowds to the various attractions. He sat back and relaxed for the short journey, he glanced over at the Granger's who seemed to be enjoying themselves, though they were a little overwhelmed by the train. He could hear Hermione reassuring them and introducing them to everyone they had not met before, Mr. Granger looked over at Harry. "Hell of a place you have Harry and I love the train set." He grinned.
"Thank you, Mr. Granger. When you come another time, when it is not such a public occasion, we shall get you up in the cab, show you round properly."
"You Harry, are a real Gentleman, that will be a day I eagerly look forward to. I have always wanted to ride in the cab of a steam engine." He replied enthusiastically.
Mrs. Granger rolled her eyes. "Boy's and their toys." She sighed, then grinned at her husbands' happiness.
A loud, celebratory series of whistles sounded from the Locomotive, which set off to pass the sheds and through the gardens, seemingly effortlessly pulling the long rake of fully loaded carriages.
The train arrived at the station close to the ruins of the actual Abbey, after just a few minutes. They waited until the others on board had disembarked, and were on the way to where the other guests were gathered before they got off and followed. A low platform had been built, Draco and Narcissa climbed the steps up to it, while the rest waited at the bottom, a silence fell over the crowd as attention fell on them. There was a protocol to follow, which the mother and son followed precisely as they welcomed everyone to the event and procedures were followed. Fifteen minutes after they arrived, the ceremony was over, and the family returned to their train, which would take them ahead of the rest to see the attractions. Draco and Narcissa got off at the lakeside station, where they would begin greeting the individuals personally. The Granger's and Longbottoms got off to take refreshments at Merlins Folly, where they could sit overlooking the lower grounds, while the others stayed on board right round to the fair, which was beginning to prove a great attraction. The train then pulled away, to run up to the sheds. Where the observation coach would be uncoupled and shunted onto a siding. Allowing the locomotive and the rest of the rake of coaches to continue and transport people round the grounds. Trains were now travelling in both directions, passing at the loops at each station, exchanging a token between the drivers to allow them to travel safely onto the next section of single track. The system enabled them to operate safely, the driver knowing that there would be no other train on that section until he passed the token on.
Walking into the fair, there were already some of the guests there, having travelled the shorter route on the trains circling in the opposite direction to the one Harry, Ginny, Sirius, and Bella had taken, Harry heard many of the men bemoaning the fact the trains were not stopping at the sheds. They had looked at the possibility, of allowing access, but they had, in the end, decided that the area would not be accessible during the Garden Party. Which allowed the Elves to concentrate on operating the railway, without having to worry about visitors wandering the hub of the line. Besides, every Locomotive was in use and most of the rolling stock was as well, so there was very little to see there.
The four of them rode a couple of the rides, including the bumper cars, before they became too crowded, each one had a short queueing system which were quickly filled. The side shows were doing a roaring trade, Hoopla, and Hook a Duck being especially popular, though as each game was free to play the prizes were simple novelties. Even so, everyone was enjoying themselves. The thirty rides and games were popular with all ages, including the elderly who enjoyed the Ferris Wheel particularly. The Muggle Ghost train attracted quite a following, it's portrayals of the various ghosts and ghouls cause humour amongst those who knew the reality, many of the rides were from a bygone era, but were enjoyed, nonetheless.
The flying course that had been created near the Quidditch pitch was especially popular with the Hogwarts students, while the petting zoo was popular with the young families, as well as Hagrid and Daisy. Harry and Ginny had a go on the broomstick assault course, while Bella dragged Sirius to the petting zoo, where Hagrid was in his element. After their flights, the young couple joined them. After a short chat with the half giant, who was friendly, but not quite as much as he was usually with them. The four left to catch the train down to the first tea house and the Glass houses, before this area became too crowded. Harry mentioned Hagrids apparent nervous attitude to them, concerned about his friend.
"I noticed that too." Ginny said. "Do you suppose it is because of what has happened between you and Dumbledore?"
"Perhaps!" Harry replied. "I suppose we should have expected that, maybe a chat with him at school when we get there."
"Good idea!" Bella agreed. "Have a think about it, but be yourselves whenever you are with him in the meantime."
They were quite glad to leave the fair, zoo, and Quidditch area behind them, it was already very busy. They had always known that this family area was likely to be the most popular of them all, but it was beginning to be obvious that they maybe should have spread the attractions out a little more. The track crossings were becoming pinch points and Harry noticed that the signs had already been altered to create a one way system over the rails, which meant that the gates were more easily closed to allow trains to pass by, as required.
The train they had boarded had disgorged a crowd of passengers, but few got on to travel on to the other attractions elsewhere, so they had a comfortable journey chatting with the other occupants of the coach. Getting off at the next station they found the Long Bottoms and Grangers among the few getting off the train heading the other way so joined them to visit the Glasshouses, Neville was, of course, in his element. There were fewer people here, but it was still busy, the tea house was busy, with guests enjoying some relaxation and discussing where they would visit, using the maps they had been given on entry to choose. There was a more gentile atmosphere at this stop than there had been at the fairground stop. Neither the Grangers nor Longbottoms fancied stopping there while it was so busy, so stayed at this stop while Harry and the others left it to go to Merlins Folly.
Although a little busier, the train they joined was by no means crowded, and they noticed that the one heading up the grounds was less crowded than the others they had seen earlier in the afternoon. They stopped in the tearooms here to get something to eat and drink, they noticed a steady stream of people walking to the caverns and a few climbing the tower to take in the view. Mary and her parents were just leaving the tea house as they were entering, they stopped to talk briefly and reminded them to join them at the house when all were called to the lake later. Mary was looking forward to the zoo, Harry warned her that it was crowded when they had left, but expected it might be less so later, so maybe rushing straight round to it was not the best idea. He also told her to tell Hagrid that Harry had sent her, and she should not be afraid of the large man. What he didn't tell her was that she was going to have the chance to feed some of the animals as well, not to mention a ride on Daisy if she wanted to. He had arranged for that with Hagrid earlier, while they had been there, hoping he would see the family before they went. Hagrid had readily agreed, despite his unusual hesitancy with Harry.
At all three stations they had visited so far, they had met a number of the guests. Some they knew well, others vaguely and still others not at all, but all wanted a moment of their time, especially at the stations and as they wandered round. While they took their refreshments though, only young children bothered them, not that they minded that. They spoke to each child happily, pleased to see them, usually until an embarrassed parent came and apologetically took the child away.
They did not visit the caves or folly this time, they could enjoy them whenever they wished to visit, but they did look out over the valley. They had been talking to the other passengers as the train had crossed the ridge line across the bottom of the lake, so they had not looked out at the view. Looking down into the grounds they could see all the fountains playing below, and realised they had yet to go down there to explore. In fact, they did not even know how to get down to that part of the gardens, but now was not the time. They could hardly explore there, when their guests could not. They would not disturb Titchy or Elie now, the elves were far to busy today, but they would have to ask them how they could visit that area soon. Harry sighed wryly at the thought, it was not that long since the thought of having a garden of his own had been beyond his dreams, let alone one so large that there were areas to really explore. They did not spend too long looking at the view, before they returned to catch the next train, heading back up the grounds.
The trains circled the railway, transporting people between the stations, the one they were on rejoined the shores of the lake where they could see the activity on the water. The largest of the boats cruised the lake, offering tours across the water, while the smaller craft provided a ferry service to the island, where music was played and refreshments were available. At Harry's suggestion part of it had been set aside as a pirate camp for children, where they could dig for coins that had supposedly been left by the buccaneers.
They did not get off at the next station, it was the one by the lake, where the Malfoy's continued their meet and greet, which it would have been improper for them to encroach on. Unfortunately, it did mean that they could not travel the lake, or see how the activities on the lake and island were going. Though if the numbers of people in the area that they could see from the train were any indication, it was second only to the fair in popularity. They did get off back at the Abbey ruins where the official welcome had taken place and walked through them to the mirror ponds, then into the walled gardens that were open. There were couples walking among the ponds and ruins, though they had also become informal play and picnic areas for family groups, away from the bustle and attractions elsewhere. Only a few people were exploring the walled gardens, so they did not spend long there. They did watch a train pass through, then enjoyed the view of it reflected in a couple of the pools as they began to walk back to the station. By now it was getting close to the time for the finale of the afternoon to begin, so they boarded a train after speaking with the Elf who was driving it, as well as the one acting as guard.
The train passed through the shed area, then up to the house. While trains had stopped here to pass each other, the doors had been kept shut, with the later events to prepare for, the house had not been open to the public. The train stopped and the four of them got out, another train pulled in on the loop formed with a parallel track that had recently been installed. Mary and her family got out, along with the Longbottoms and Grangers. Once the two trains had left, Mary spotted Harry and Ginny. She ran over the tracks to greet them, her parents were not concerned. They knew that no trains would be arriving until the other two had arrived at the next station on their route.
"Thank you, Harry, you too Ginny, Hagrid is so cool and so big. He let me ride Daisy, I told her you were my friend before I dared get on her, she purred when I was riding her, but she wouldn't let anyone else have a go." The little girl said excitedly.
Her dad grinned. "We couldn't get her away from Daisy for quite a while, or the other animals for that matter. I think Hagrid has an apprentice in the making with her."
Mary continued to tell them about her day as they walked into the house and up to the balcony overlooking the lake. The adults all grinning as telling Harry and Ginny her stories of the day consumed her, and she was oblivious to the grandeur of the rooms they were walking through.
At four o clock an announcement asked everyone to gather on the shores of the lake, it also announced that the Island attractions were about to close. The larger vessel then turned to be a second ferry, taking people off the island alongside the smaller boat. Once everyone was ashore they to were closed and returned to the boat shed. Twenty minutes after the announcement, the rides on the fair were closed, the flying grounded and the animals, including Daisy, being led away, only the refreshment tents near the lakeside remained open. Even the trains stopped running, waiting at the various stations, ready to take the guests after the finale.
The family had all been expecting the announcement and at last came together, on the balcony all of them, including the Granger's, Longbottoms and Bone's gathered at the station from which they had started. Draco and Narcissa were tired after the afternoon greeting as many people as they could. They had no clue how things had gone, which areas were popular, they had not had any opportunity to even take a circuit of the trains, although one of the Elves had ensured they had refreshments brought to them. They had gathered at the house, assembling on the first floor balcony, to watch the events below, and to ensure they did not get mixed up by the process of all the guests departing after the display ended.
Last to arrive on the Balcony was Remus with Tonks and her parents. Harry greeted Ted and Andromeda warmly and turned to introduce them to Marys family, thinking they would be the only ones they may not know. Ted broke into a smile before Harry could speak. "Simon, I didn't know you would be here with us, what a pleasant surprise."
"Uncle Ted. Aunt Andi." Mary exclaimed and ran to Andromeda for a hug.
"Now then Ted, likewise my friend." Mary's father grinned, then saw Harry's puzzled look. "Ted and I are partners in the same law firm Harry, my father started the chambers in fact and took Ted on, eventually he became a partner, then later my father brought me in. We have been legal advisers to the Blacks ever since dad set it up, that's how I am part of the Alliance."
Harry grinned. "Well I never asked you what your link was, so do the Potters and Ashmoles have solicitors too, or should we just retain your practice for all three families?"
"They did have them Harry, but the firms have since gone." Ted told him. "The firm that the Potters retained was destroyed in a Death Eater raid the same night as your parents were killed, it was believed it was to distract attention from the attack at your parents. Ginny, the firm the Ashmoles retained went out of business after your parents died. We hold the records of both firms, it is the practice of chambers to ensure their files are safe should they cease trading. The three firms often collaborated on Alliance matters, so it was natural that we left our files to the care of each other, should the worst happen to us."
"Do we have other law firms in the Alliance?" Ginny asked.
Sirius shook his head. "No, Ted's firm are it."
"In which case they should be officially legal advisors to the Alliance, shouldn't they?" Ginny suggested.
"Good idea!" Harry agreed.
"I can't see a problem with that." Sirius agreed. "So long as the partners agree?"
Ted and Simon looked at each other and nodded. "I can't see a problem with that." Ted responded a grin on his face.
"If need be, we can talk tomorrow, you are all staying here for the night in any case, so you can attend this evening's events anyway." Harry observed.
They all took their seats and chatted waiting for the show to begin, Mary excitedly pointing out things she could see, while they waited.
All those on the Balcony would be at each event, including Mary, they would be shown their rooms in the period between the end of the Garden Party and the Dinner. Mary would be the only youngster at the evening events, Harry and Ginny had ensured she would be looked after, so her parents could enjoy themselves without needing to worry about her.
A few minutes later the pipe organ, in the house on the island, struck up, encouraging the few stragglers to hurry to the nearest shore, this display would be able to be seen across the lake. After a few minutes, slowly, one by one, a large model of a ship cruised out onto the lake from a boathouse set at the end of a short, but hidden, inlet on the last of the islands. The models depicted civilian supply ships, along with cruisers, frigates, battleships, and a single aircraft carrier flagship. A narration began, as the ships cruised round the lake, gradually forming a convoy, circling the lake steadily, the armed vessels apparently protecting the unarmed from attack. As they neared the island again, a darker grey battleship appeared, it changed course towards the convoy. Smoke rose from its guns, as it appeared to attack the fleet. Spouts of water shot into the air near the target ships as if a shell had missed, a flame erupted on board if the vessel was supposed to have been hit. The music continued, helping set the scene as the narrator told the story of an actual sea battle, that was re enacted on the lake, including the destruction of a submarine that had joined the attack on the fleet. It was sunk by magically flown aircraft, that had supposedly taken off from the Aircraft carrier. During the thirty-minute tableau, ships keeled over as if sinking after being attacked by others, the crowed hissed and booed the bad guys and cheered the good as directed by the narrator. It concluded with a spectacular battle including all surviving battleships and aircraft, which concluded, to the cheers of the crowd, with the supposed good guys victory. At this point the surviving ships once more circled the lake, while the others, were righted and sailed back to the island they had all emerged from, including the submarine. It had been a spectacular show and from the continuing applause, one enjoyed by the crowd.
With the conclusion of the battle, once the applause had calmed, the narrator thanked everyone for coming, and wishing them a safe journey home, the end of the party came. The trains once more came into their own, crowds were allowed to board the ones headed towards the stables, while the others headed back round to where they were needed. They were lined up to ensure a continuous, direct service from all the stations. This meant that the grounds were cleared from the furthest point first, trains that were full, travelling non-stop through stations, only those with space on arrival stopping to pick up passengers. The system worked well, efficiently delivering the guests to the stables, from where they could leave by which ever means they chose. As fewer guests remained requiring transport, the trains were withdrawn from the service one by one as they reached the sheds. The locomotives were taken to the service point where their fire was dropped into a pit between the rails. Once done, they were driven, using the remaining steam to the turntable from where it rolled into its stabling point. They would gently cool, while they were checked for any leaks. They were oiled, cleaned and ash removed from the smoke box, then left for the night. Some did not have their fires dropped and would be kept in gentle steam overnight. They would provide the motive power for the tidy up, which would begin the next day.
While the locomotives were being disposed of, the shunting Engine disposed of the rake they had pulled, into the carriage shed. Where each was checked and cleared of any litter, cleaned and serviced ready for the next time they were required. Once all the coaches and locomotives were stabled, the shunter was coupled to a line of closed waggons, which it pulled down to the lake station. Where the contents were levitated onto the largest of the boats and taken over to the island, and a team of Elves set about distributing it all to preplanned positions ready for the evening. The locomotive ran round the train and hauled it back to the sheds, its work complete, it too was stabled like the others. The grounds were quiet again, apart from the activity on the island, even the animals had been returned to their overnight quarters, except Daisy, who lay near the door of the house. Only the Elves, the family and their private guests would remain, at least for the next couple of hours, while preparations for the next events were made.
At Seven o'clock precisely the gates behind the cottage in Godric's Hollow opened once more, this time to admit the guests for the Dinner and the Ball. These two events once more had duty guests from the Wizangamot and the Ministry as well as those from the Alliance who were certainly not invited because they had to be. It was true that many of the meetings Harry had, had with the Alliance member families had been business only occasions. However, he had also got to know them personally at the various events of the last month, he had found he enjoyed their company.
The arrivals this time were by car or by Portkey to the same location as had been used earlier, but the Floo was closed, so there would be no arrivals that way. Each guests ticket was checked on arrival either at the gate or the Portkey station, then again on their arrival at the front door. On entry their coats and hats were taken in the entrance hall, from where they were taken into the Great Hall. Each guest received a glass of champagne as they entered and were free to socialise ahead of the meal. Most stayed in the Hall, though some went out onto the terrace, overlooking the grounds where the fairground was still visible, but still and silent, casting long shadows on the ground as the sun sank lower in the sky. It was still a warm evening, and those outside were enjoying the fresh air.
Once all the guests had arrived in the Great Hall, Harry and Ginny, along with the rest of the family and their guests, including the Granger's and Mary with her parents, appeared on the balcony above. The guests below hushed and those out on the terrace came back inside, they awaited the party who made their way to the centre of the balcony. Sirius and Bella were the hosts for the Dinner, so they were the ones who the others supported. Sirius stopped and overlooked the crowd, Bella on his arm.
"Welcome, all of you, to Peverell Abbey." He announced. "My thanks to Lord Potter and Lady Ashmole for allowing us to use their wonderful home for the Blacks Dinner, I am sure you will agree this is a magnificent venue for the penultimate event of this year's season. I trust you are all enjoying yourselves so far and looking forward to the meal. As is traditional I ask the youngest person present if she would be so kind as to make the announcement, after which please follow the directions of the Elves through to the Banqueting Hall. Mary, if you would be so kind my dear."
As arranged Harry picked Mary up, so she could be seen, and magnified her voice. He knew she was nervous, but had been looking forward to this moment since Sirius had asked her, after the events of the afternoon had finished.
Mary looked out over the crowd below apprehensively. She took a deep breath. "My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen, Dinner is served." She told them, grinning widely.
Those below gave her a loud round of applause, while Harry cancelled the sonorous and congratulated her, while her parents looked on proudly. They looked at each other and nodded, a decision the couple had been considering for several weeks had been made. They just needed to ask Harry and Ginny, who they hoped would accept, but that was for tomorrow, there was enough going on tonight as it was.
The guests began to clear the Great Hall, past boards with table plans to show them where they were to be seated at the tables in the Banqueting Hall. Then, guided by the Elves they headed for the room. Sirius and Bella led those who were staying at the house tonight, down the stairs, they waited outside the door while the other guests settled, standing behind their seats at the tables. Once all were in their place, an Elf loudly announced the top table party and the Blacks led the procession in, while the guests clapped the pace.
The top Table procession split once through the door, Sirius leading one side, Bella the other, they walked down either side of the room. Sirius and Bella met at the centre seats of the table. With everyone in place, they sat down at the table, the others could sit as well, each examining the menu, while wine was served. The first course arrived at the tables, exactly fifty-five minutes after the gates to allow guests to enter had opened, just as had been planned.
Of the three events, this one had proved least problematic to arrange, the invitations had gone out, and the menu set quite quickly, along with the other details required. Now the two hundred or so guests were sat enjoying the result of that work. The Elves in the Kitchens had done a fantastic job on the meal, which all seemed to enjoy. The starter was light, Melba toast with a freshly made pate, was followed by a refreshing fish course of a dressed green salad served with smoked salmon, Prawns, and muscles served with cream cheese bites infused with herbs. A lemon sorbet to cleans the palate was followed by the main course, which they had deliberately made different to all the others that had been served during the season. Most, including the Ministry, had served a cut of beef as the protein for this course. Sirius and Bella, however, decided that those attending may well be fed up with the meat by this stage so chose a different one for the meal. It seemed their belief had been correct as the plates with the cuts of Venison with a red wine sauce and a cherry tomato arrived in front of the guests. The Tomato had been Sirius idea, he had remembered Carina singing Harry a song on the only Christmas they had shared. It had been about Rudolf the reindeer and his red nose, so wanted it as a joke that most would not get, but would amuse him. Hermione's parents got it immediately as did quite a few others, who shared the joke with others as the Vegetables were served.
Pudding followed, Raspberries with fresh cream and a shortbread biscuit, providing a refreshing course before Cheese and Biscuits arrived. Coffee and handmade Chocolates were served followed by Brandy or Port for those who wanted it. Appropriate wines had been served with each of the courses as required, except of course the Sorbet course and those after the pudding. Mary had her own meal, full of her favourites, served by one of the Elves who had been assigned to look after her in particular, she enjoyed herself, although she was by far the youngest there. The meal concluded with another short speech from Sirius followed by the traditional toast to the end of the season, proposed by Bella. The sun had set while they ate, but it was still a warm enough evening, and they were all directed out onto the terrace to watch a firework display set off from the island in the lake.
After the display had finished, they were led along the terrace, back into the Great Hall. Since they had left it, it had been transformed into a ballroom with tables around the edges, a stage at one end, a bar at the other supplied by Tom from the Leaky Cauldron. Harry went to the stage and climbed up, the guests fell silent. He welcomed them as host to the Season Finale Ball and introduced the band for the event. He then rejoined Ginny on the dance floor, where they led the first dance. Harry was grateful for the lessons they had endured, as they waltzed gracefully round the floor, soon to be joined by Sirius with Bella, Neville and Hermione, Draco and Daphne. Mary and Hermione's parents, Ted with Andromeda, Remus and Tonks, all joined them, then finally the two single girls of the top table Narcissa and a delighted Mary joined the dance. Once a few more bars had passed, the rest of the guests began to join them and the floor soon filled. Mary partnered Harry for the second dance and was again applauded once it was over, and she happily went off to go to bed with the Elf who had looked after her. Her parents briefly left to say goodnight to her, but returned to enjoy the dance as had been arranged.
31st August. Day 65.
It was almost dawn by the time the last of the guests had left, and the family could retire. Even so, they were all awake by mid-morning. Hermione and her parents went home after lunch, as did Mary and her Parents, though not until after Mary had spent some time with Daisy again. While they had watched her and the Griffin happily playing, Mary's father turned to Harry and Ginny.
"While Mary is occupied, we wondered if we could ask you two a big favour." He asked.
Ginny nodded. "You have become friends so yes of course you may, we shall help if we can." She said.
The man smiled, and his wife took his hand and spoke. "You don't know this, but sadly Mary's Godparents, my sister, and her husband, were killed in an accident last year, since when we have been worried about what would happen to her if anything should happen to us."
Her Husband took over as his wife's voice faltered. "Mary dotes on you both, and we have seen how much you care about her. We know it is a big thing to ask you both, especially with how young you are yourselves, but we can think of no one better to become her new Godparents. We would be delighted if you would agree, so would Mary, she already thinks of you as her big brother and sister."
He and his wife looked at the couple hopefully, while Harry and Ginny looked to each other, seemingly in silent conversation. They seemed to come to an agreement, then turned back to the couple, who were holding hands tightly. "We would be honoured, if you are sure?" Harry asked.
"We are Harry, without a shadow of a doubt." The couple said.
"Then its settled!" Harry grinned. "Now is there a ceremony or anything."
"There is, but perhaps we can arrange that for your Christmas Holidays, but agreeing is sufficient for now."
They agreed that the couple would talk to Mary about it nearer the time of the ceremony, so she would not be too excited over lunch to settle, then they had set off for their cottage.
Harry and Sirius walked down the drive with them, they had an appointment with the stonemason to arrange the gravestone they had planned the last time they had visited the Abbey. Mary and her parents had hugged Ginny and thanked them all before they had set off, it was Harry and Sirius turn when they reached the gate to the family home. As Ginny had, Harry reassured Mary they would write while they were at Hogwarts, and they would see her again soon. She waved to him and blew kisses all the way down the path as her parents led her into the house, leaving Harry and Sirius to their task.
Once they returned to the Abbey, the family, including the Tonks, had the rest of the day to themselves to relax. The elves had, of course, refused any and all offers of help to clear up. They told the family that a train was available for them, if needed, there were others already out collecting things from the Garden party. The fair would not be taken down until after they had left, so the family went down with Titchy, who was happy to operate the rides for them.
It was the last day of the holiday's before the younger members of the family returned to Hogwarts, so they were determined to enjoy it. As well as the fair, they took the train round to Merlins Folly, from where Titchy led them down into the lower gardens and the water features all fed from the lake. As well as the fountains they could see from above there were rills, streams, waterfalls and smaller spouts of water. A carved Dragons head emerged from a cliff face, water shooting in a fast powerful spout of water, gushing from its mouth into a pond, that flowed out in a torrent over a weir to join the widening stream. They followed the path and emerged on a circular paved area, at the centre of which was what appeared to be a tree, but water spouted from the tips of each branch and twig. That was the last fountain, but the stream continued over low waterfalls and into pools, forming an oriental garden. It then flowed into another area, full of tree ferns, then finally a large pond surrounded by Gunnera plants which almost appeared prehistoric, with the gigantic leaves overhanging the water and paths.
The stream carried on, further into the valley, but they took the path back up to the folly. Knowing there was more to see, but they did not want to stay too long, preferring to have the chance to explore the rest at a more leisurely pace than today allowed. Still, their exploration had confirmed it had been wise to keep this part of the gardens closed off, during the events. They had already decided they would be celebrating Christmas at the Abbey, and most likely a couple of weeks, at least, next summer, news which delighted Elie and Titchy.
That evening they discussed what might happen once they arrived at the school. They knew Harry and Ginny were the owners of the castle, but while they knew some details of what to expect, they were not sure what that entirely meant in practice, so would have to play that by ear. They knew about Dumbledore and Umbridge as well as Ron, so planned how they may need to deal with them. Knowing already that there would be other changes because of the resurrection of the Alliance, they had managed to ensure that all the students in the group, including the new first years, knew what those were. The one worry Harry had about that was that he wanted them to integrate with the others, not become separate from the rest of the student body.
