yo new one-shot story
Mikoto Uchiha sat down in the bedroom she shares with her husband, who's dead on the ground with her eldest son standing overhead.
"What's taking so long? If you're gonna kill me, then get it over with!" she said in a content tone.
She heard the sound of a blade moving through the air. She was prepared to meet her fate.
Then a thud sound passed through her ears. She looked down to see Itachi's blade embedded in the hardwood floor.
She carefully turns to her eldest son with a questioning look in her eyes. "Why?" was all she could say.
"I refused to leave Sasuke alone in this bloodstained word. If you promise to cast this almost coup to the wind, making sure Sasuke has a normal childhood, I will spare you. But if I find out you tried to impart the clan's hatred for the village in him, I will return and kill you!" he stood before her, locking eyes.
"I understand. You have my word. Sasuke will never be told of the truth of this matter till he's ready. And I'll make sure he shares your admiration for this village," she said with a faint smile.
"Good" he lightly kisses her on the forehead before knocking her out cold.
When she finally came to, she felt small hands shaking her.
When her eyes finally opened to see her precious little Sasuke, a scared expression gave a slight sigh of relief.
"Mother, Itachi…I don't know how but he showed me what happened before I came back."
She brings her son into a comforting hug only for him to pass out, no doubt from the shock he just indorsed
She picks up her son, carrying him out of the compound. On the way out, she noticed a figure on a lamp post.
She nodded only for the figure to nod in response before disappearing.
She walked all the way to Hiruzen home. When the door finally opened, he was shocked to see her before him with her son.
He allows her on wanting to know the meaning of this.
She confessed her sins about the coup, apologizing, hoping Hiruzen would forgive her.
"I see. I can't blame Itachi for doing this."
"What are you going to do?" she begged, unable to look him in the eyes.
"As long as back up the words you gave Itachi, I suppose I can let you off the hook," he said with a level glare.
"Thank you, Lord Hokage!"
"I have an extra futon around here to stay the night?"
"That would be greatly appreciated!"
One week later
One week after the Uchiha clan massacre, Hiruzen was able to find a decent-sized home for the mother and son.
Of course, the village council wasn't too thrilled. Itachi left Mikoto alive since Itachi was ordered to kill them all minus Sasuke.
But after Mikoto relayed her brief conversation with Itachi, they let it go but made the point they would be keeping a close eye on her.
Sasuke was emotionally broken, he hardly ate or slept, and the time he did was short because of the flashbacks.
Mikoto's thoughts were split not between her and the village but about Sasuke and Kushina's son.
She checked up on him from time to time. She never admitted it. She has been tempted to take him in.
Kushina was her best friend, and when she died, she did nothing for the boy.
Every time she saw their village's reaction to him, it pained her greatly.
Now that it was just her and Sasuke to themselves, she can finally honor her friend's legacy.
After dropping her son off at the academy, she headed to the Hokage office once again.
"You need something, Mikoto?"
"Yes, you know I was great friends with Naruto's mother….now that I'm not tied to the Uchiha clan anymore... So I wish to look after Naruto to honor her memory!" she said fiercely, bowing to him.
Hiruzen didn't speak a word for a few minutes, contemplating her request.
"If I approved of this, what would you do for the boy?" he said with a firm expression.
"I will look after him like he is my own, cloth him, feed him, give him something he never had, a family bond," she said, unable to look him in the eye.
An awkward silence filled the room for a few minutes. Then, as it grew, doubt filled her mind.
Just as she was about to withdraw her plea, "you can look after Naruto, but are you prepared for how the village will treat you when you take him in?"
"Yes, I know that going into this, I will have to tell him I'm a good friend of his mom, though."
Hiruzen took a deep breath before exhaling "fine, I've held you up long enough. I suggest you prepare to take him in while he and Sasuke are at the academy!"
"Thank you, Lord Hokage!" She bowed before leaving.
As soon as she got home, she went to work, getting a space available for Naruto.
When It came time to pick up Sasuke, she approached the small blonde-haired boy.
This got her looks from the other parents and students wondering why she was approaching that boy.
Sasuke was about to speak up but was silent by her mother. So instead, she kneeled to be at eye level with Naruto.
"Hello Naruto, my name is Mikoto. I'm Sasuke's mother. Would you like to live with Sasuke and me!" Everyone had a shocked expression at this, none more so than Naruto.
A closer look revealed he had a mix of hesitation and caution as this had never happened before.
"It's all right, Naruto!" Hiruzen said as he stood by her, to everyone's surprise.
He turns towards the crowd with a firm look in his eye matched with a smirk, causing them all to pipe up and look away.
There's little they can do if the Hokage is involved with this, not including who would be brave enough to oppose his approval of this matter.
The frown Naruto had when she asked the question Morph into a smile before saying yes.
"Good, follow me, please!" Naruto stood by her side, not slowing down his pace at all.
The smile never left Naruto's face as they walked home. He didn't even notice the stares on him.
But Mikoto sure did. She sent them an amused smile. No doubt by tomorrow, the Hokage will have sent word out to the people of Konoha.
It's rare time he must use his authority to quell any opposition. After all, who would be stupid enough to oppose their village leader openly?
Conveniently the home the Hokage picked out for her had an extra room for Naruto to stay in.
She has the sneaking suspicion the Hokage knew she would take Naruto in. But she decided to leave it at that.
The following day they moved all of Naruto's belongings to his new home.
His room is next to Sasuke's. Hers is right across the hall with the kitchen on the far end.
They have a decent-sized backyard, big to entice the boys to practice and improve their skills as a ninja.
For dinner that night, Mikoto took the two of them to Ichiraku ramen. The two boys ate their meal with smiles on their faces.
Mikoto tries her best to brush off of the gaze of father and daughter Ramen makers.
Once they were done, they headed home for the night.
Tomorrow, however, is going to be a different challenge for Mikoto. First, the other academy student will treat Sasuke now that Naruto is staying with them.
With the Hokage's permission, she's allowed to use the secret paths in the academy to see how her boys are being treated.
Unsurprisingly all the girls in the class ignore Naruto like always.
Speaking on Naruto, he wore a dejected look as he went back to his studies well tried to, he can't make heads or tales on the material.
Mikoto saw this and made a mental note to help Naruto with his studies, and with Sasuke, he'll have a sparring partner.
Taking one last glance at Naruto, he sees several boys come up to him. A closer look reveals their clan members.
With Naruto
"So, Naruto, is it true you'll be staying with Sasuke and his mom?" Shikamaru asked.
"Yep, beats being on my own hopefully can make this part easier." He gestures to paper material the class sensei give them. They nodded in understanding.
As days turned into weeks, weeks turned into a month. During that time, Naruto grades rose, and practical sides like kunai and shuriken skills went up having a training partner.
That's not all. The opinion of Naruto among his classmates seems to change for the better. He still played ninja with them.
Sasuke, however, is still distant from everyone except Naruto.
After enough prodding and pestering, Naruto manages to get him to play ninja with the other boys. Believe it or not, he smiles every once in a while.
As for Mikoto during this time, predictably, most villagers didn't want anything to do with her.
She didn't let it bother. Her mind is still set on honoring her friend Kushina.
Thankfully a select few of her fellow jonin still treat her like a regular person should.
The only person to ask about how the boys are doing is Kakashi and the Hokage.
Eventually, months turned into years before she knew both Naruto and Sasuke were in their final year of the academy.
The one downside of living with Sasuke and his mom whenever a girl wanted to know more about Sasuke, they went to Naruto.
Didn't take long for him to realize the pain Sasuke goes through with all the girl fawning over him.
Before they knew it, graduation had come at last. Unfortunately for Naruto, his inability to perform the clone jutsu prevented him from graduating even though everything else is up to par for a genin.
Then Naruto ran into Mizuki sensei on the way to graduate. He was initially reluctant, knowing Mikoto would probably kill him, but he really wanted to graduate.
He ultimately complied only to learn the truth of why everyone hated him but managed to pull an ace out of his sleeve, showing Mizuki the error of his ways.
And thanks to Iruka sensei, he now is genin alongside his brother in all but blood. But his joy didn't last long.
"What's wrong? Naruto, you're a ninja now!" Iruka said
"Don't get me wrong, I'm happy at being a ninja, but… I'm afraid of how Mikoto will react after knowing what happened tonight," he said with a sheepish grin.
Iruka did his best to stifle a chuckle before grabbing hold of him.
"Best get it out of the way now, Naruto."
"Hai"
With minutes he stood before the Hokage with Mikoto beside him. He couldn't look her in the eyes.
Mikoto let out a sigh as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
"I'll let it slide this time since you graduated."
"So can we Ichiraku tonight now that Sasuke and I are genins now!" he said with hope.
"Oh, alright"
"Yes!"
True to her word, the three of them sit at Ichiraku Ramen, Naruto consuming bowl after bowl at a reasonable pace.
One of the first things Mikoto pounded into Naruto's head was table manners.
As for Sasuke, after being around Naruto, he acquired a taste for ramen.
By the time they were done eating, Naruto had five bowls. Sasuke had two bowls, and Mikoto had one bowl.
Mikoto tries to pay for their meals, but Teuchi refuses, insisting it's a graduation present to the boys.
Just as they were about to leave, Mikoto was pulled to the side.
"What is it, Teuchi?"
"I never got the chance. I wanted to say thank you for looking after Naruto over the past few years. He's come a long way since then."
"Well, thank you. I hope I can continue to live up to everyone's praises moving forward."
"I know you will."
The following morning Mikoto goes to wake up the boys only to see empty beds.
Then she heard the sound of clanking metal from outside. Wanting to know more, she looked out to see Naruto and Sasuke sparring. This brought a smile to her face.
It's just another reminder of how they are constantly pushing each other to get stronger.
After half an hour, they came inside, taking a quick shower before taking a seat at the kitchen table.
Mikoto prepared a good breakfast, so her boy gets a good start for their ninja careers.
"By mom"
"By Mikoto!" And they were off.
She silently prays they both pass the real genin test, which got her thinking if they do pass, that would give her the time to get back into shape.
After all, before becoming a mother, she was jonin. It got her out of the house and helped with will expenses.
Since the allowance Hiruzen has been giving them is just enough to get by.
Both Naruto and Sasuke sit in their classroom, waiting to learn their squad number and comrades.
Squad after the squad is called out by Iruka finally reaching squad seven.
"For squad seven Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha," the two fists bump each other happy with the results. "And Sakura Haruno," she cheers at this before rubbing into another girl's face.
The two boys silently groaned at this. When names were being called for the previous six teams, they hoped Hinata would be their third.
She was the only girl in the class who never bothered either of them.
With all the squad names called out, they all have to wait for their respective sensei to show up.
Unfortunately for squad seven, they waited for several hours before he finally showed.
But not before Naruto set up a prank. The prank in question was having the chalkboard eraser held between the door and the frame.
And what do you know, it worked like a charm.
They met on top of the school, introducing themself only to learn there to meet him at training ground three the next day.
Once they met up early in the morning, they were forced to wait several hours before he showed up.
He explained the challenge and rules, Naruto and Sasuke traded glances.
After spending the past few years as training partners, they quickly realized team works is essential.
The tricky question is how handled their third squadmate if there going to get the bells.
"Start!" and the three genins were off. After several minutes they all had hiding spots.
Excepts one Naruto spouting nonsense about one on one between his and kakashi.
It ended like you expected when genin faced off against a jonin with a bell being dropped.
Naruto picked it up only to get caught by hanging rope upside down.
"If the bait is obvious, don't take it" just as he said those words, the Naruto tied upside down poofed out of existence, throwing Kakashi off for a moment.
A barrage of kunai and shuriken suddenly hit him only to poof out of existence, leaving a log in his place.
The real kakashi hid high in the vegetation of a nearby tree "well played, Naruto and Sasuke look like I'll have to keep on my toes with you two."
He knew the two worked well together, to no surprise with Mikoto looking after them, but this even surprised him.
Farther into the brush of the forest, Naruto and Sasuke, and Sakura are watching the jonin.
"It's not perfect, but we have a decent idea of the skill gap."
"Agreed" this whole time, Sakura is in awe at the Naruto and Sasuke teamwork.
Then it hit her that must be the point of this test.
"Guy, I think I know what Kakashi sensei is trying to teach us" they look to her for an answer. "That must be why he has two bells to turns us on each other," she said.
"Now we have that out of the way. We need a plan."
Sakura's expression told them she was deep in thought on what to do. "That is!"
Once a plan is agreed on, they all share confident grins before heading in different directions.
They now surrounded Kakashi. They look to one of the nearby posts paying attention to the shadow.
Once the shadow was in line with the creek, they went into action.
One second later, Countless shadow clones sprinted toward Kakashi.
With kunai in hand, he delt them with ease, he didn't realize it till its to late, but smoke from each clone was blocking his vision.
With the sound movement in the air, he jumps out of the way to see kunai and shuriken heading the center of the cloud.
Capitalizing on him being in the air, three genins bolted toward him since he could not move in mid-air.
Unfortunately, the power gap showed its hand once again. When they reached him, he poofed, revealing yet another log.
"Oh, come on, not again," Naruto said with a sigh.
"I thought it might actually work," Sakura added.
"No point in complaining. Well, I have to come up with something different next time."
"That was a good plan. It would have worked on other genin and chunin who let their guard down. Look like they're worth my time after all."
Unfortunately, before they could think up another plan, the bell went off, signaling it was noon.
The real Kakashi landed before them with a neutral look in his one eye.
The three genins are on edge, wondering who is going to be tied up against the post.
"Hmm, you pass," getting a dumbfounded look in their eyes, only for Kakashi to explain the point of this exercise.
They all cheer knowing they're now three of the nine academy student who officially becomes genin.
"Our first mission starts tomorrow!" with those wired, Squad seven is formed.
Later the day Sakura joine Naruto Sasuke and Mikoto at Ichiraku ramen to celebrate passing.
Mikoto is the happiest knowing all those years raising Naruto with Sasuke weren't in vain.
And with a smart girl like Sakura, she didn't need a brain to know these three would take the ninja world by storm.
