Addie was already regretting making this deal with Eddie when he walked back into the kitchen with a bottle of rum. However, she had a feeling not a lot of studying would get done either way, and hell, she hadn't gotten drunk since her last night in Chicago with Sam. She knew a month wasn't that long, but she was used to going out with Sam every weekend, and occasionally once or twice during the week. What was the harm in messing around this one time? At least they would be getting some type of studying done.
Eddie sat down and twisted open the bottle, setting it down in between the two of them. Addie was assuming, based on how often he actually showed up to class, that she wouldn't have to answer too many of his questions anyways.
"So," Eddie glanced at the textbook, "What's our test on again?"
Addie smirked, oh yeah, she would not be on the losing end of this deal. "We're studying the Age of Enlightenment."
"Ahhh, the age of enlightenment. Feels like we're still fairly unenlightened as a society, don't you think?" He asked with a smirk.
Addie ignored his comments and pulled out the flash cards she had prepared in advance last night. "Are you ready?" She challenged, raising her eyebrow at him.
Eddie smiled at Addie, "Let's have it, firecracker."
"Feeling a little confident are we Munson?"
His smile widened, "Always."
Addie cleared her throat and flipped up the first flash card, "Alright then, when was the age of enlightenment?"
Eddie scoffed, "Is that all you've got? Between the 17th and 18th century. Drink up." He grinned proudly and held the bottle out to Addie.
She huffed, "I'm giving you an easy start."
"Sure you are sweetheart," he teased as he watched her take a shot from the bottle.
Addie rolled her eyes as she set the bottle back down, "Next question."
Eddie held up his hand, "I believe you are forgetting the other part of the deal. I get to ask you anything I want, and you have to answer."
Addie scrunched up her nose in annoyance but gestured for Eddie to continue.
"You never answered me before, so I will ask you again, why are you spending your senior year in a trash bin town like Hawkins, Indiana?"
Addie hesitated. Usually when she talked about her family with new people they automatically pegged her as a spoiled rich girl with work crazy parents who just wanted to rebel as a way to get attention. Some of that assumption would be true; she did have rich parents that focused more on their work than her, but it had never bothered her. After how many years, she was used to being independent, and she loved it. She considered lying to Eddie, just so she wouldn't have to deal with him having that assumption of her, but for some reason she felt she could be honest with him.
"Okay, to clarify, I did not choose to be here, I just want that understood."
Eddie smiled and gestured for her to continue.
"Well, long story short, my parents work and travel a lot. They both work with money, or for a bank, or something like that. My dad's some type of financial manager and he works with lots of rich clients, hence all the band t-shirts. Anyways, they've always traveled a lot for work, they work with clients all over the world, usually in Europe, but like a month ago they were asked to go work with some big shot client in China. They couldn't say no, so my options were to spend my senior year in a foreign country where I don't know anyone and don't speak the language, or come stay with my Aunt Claudia in Hawkins. I chose Hawkins. It seemed to be the lesser of two evils… Is that a sufficient answer?"
Eddie rubbed his chin, pretending to consider it, then shrugged, "That will do."
Addie nodded, picked up the flash cards and shuffled them. She was just about to read out the next card when Eddie spoke again, "For what it's worth, I'm glad you chose Hawkins."
Addie looked up, surprised by his comment, but he merely winked at her then nodded at the flash cards, "What do you got?"
"Uh…" she looked down at the card, "Oh okay, this one is a little bit tougher, name two historical figures who majorly influenced the age of enlightenment."
Eddie ran a hand through his hair as he thought over the question, "Fuck, I know this one. Okay, Francis Bacon…"
Addie nodded, "And?"
"Shit," he muttered, "It starts with an R!"
Addie smiled, "You got to say the name to get the point."
Eddie sighed, "Who was it?"
"Rene Descartes," Addie told him, setting the flash card on the table.
"Shit!" Eddie exclaimed and laid his head on the table dramatically. "Fine you win this one," he sat up and smiled at Addie, "I guess I have to drink." He winked at her and reached across the table, grabbing the bottle and taking a long swig.
"Hey! You got it wrong on purpose!" Addie accused.
Eddie smirked, "I guess we'll never know, now will we?"
Addie narrowed her eyes skeptically, "Fine, next question…"
The two of them continued on with their game. They quickly realized they wouldn't last long if they kept doing shots of just rum, and so they switched over to drinking beers after a half hour. After an hour, they were both already sufficiently drunk. Much to Addie's surprise, Eddie knew more about the subject than she had assumed. When she had asked how he remembered so much when he missed so much school, he had smiled devilishly and reminded Addie that he was retaking this class for a third time now.
Unfortunately for Addie, because Eddie's memory was better than she had expected, she had had to answer way more questions than she had wanted. Eddie had asked her everything from her favorite music artists (Queen, Metallica, and Fleetwood Mac) to the first time she had made out with someone (she had been 14, and they had been playing spin the bottle).
It was now getting closer to 6 o'clock, and Eddie suggested taking a break to find some food. Addie begrudgingly agreed, only because she figured they should take a break from their drinking game unless she wanted to black out.
"Want to order a pizza?" Eddie asked. He was standing up now and leaning up against the wall.
Addie, who was trying her best to appear totally sober, gave Eddie a thumbs up, "Sounds fantastic! Ooooo get me one with extra cheese… and olives!"
Eddie laughed and picked up the phone to order the pizza.
While he was on the phone, Addie chugged the remainder of her beer and started walking towards the back of the trailer in search of the bathroom. She was about to turn into the bathroom when she noticed Eddie's bedroom, or what she assumed to be Eddie's bedroom, right beside the bathroom.
Without even thinking twice she partly stumbled into the room. Unsurprisingly, it was just as messy as the rest of the trailer, but for some reason in this room the mess seemed to fit. There were posters pinned up all over the walls and he had various stacks of comic books laying around the room. On his bedside table was an ashtray, the rings he always wore, and… Addie decided she was going to ignore the bottle of lotion and box of condoms sitting there as well. Sitting on a chair in the corner was a stack of clothes, including his infamous jean vest. A red curtain was hung over the window to block out the light.
What really caught Addie's eye was the electric guitar he had mounted on the wall. It was clearly very valuable to Eddie as he had it prominently displayed. Addie was just about to reach over and touch it when she heard footsteps come up behind her.
"What are you snooping around my room now?"
Addie spun around to find Eddie leaning against the doorframe watching her. She crossed her arms, "No, I just happened into your room."
"You happened into it?" Eddie repeated, clearly mocking her. "Jesus Firecracker, I thought you would hold your alcohol better than this."
Addie guffawed and held a hand to her heart as if she were wounded, "I DO hold my alcohol well, excuse you."
Eddie snorted, "If you say so." He stepped into the room and walked over beside Addie. He looked at the guitar, "Ain't she beautiful?"
Addie looked at the guitar and then at Eddie. His eyes seemed to have lit up as he looked at his guitar; she had never seen him look like that. She looked back at the guitar, "Yeah, she is. What is she?"
Eddie stepped back and sat down on his bed, "Warlock NJ Series. She's my prized possession."
Addie tore her gaze away from the guitar and looked over at Eddie. Just then she noticed something else on the wall over by his closet. She gestured towards the wall, "Oh really? I would have expected those to be your prize possession."
Eddie looked towards where she was pointing, and he froze in embarrassment. Addie was pointing at the handcuffs Eddie had hung up on his wall.
Addie started giggling, "So which one gets more use Eddie? The guitar? Or your handy dandy friends over there?"
Eddie ran a hand through his hair and the side of his mouth quirked up, "I like to think I'm rather skilled while using both of them. Want me to show you?"
Addie grabbed a shirt off the chair beside her, balled it up, and threw it at Eddie's face. "You're awful," she said with a laugh.
Eddie just smiled back at her again but didn't say anything else about the handcuffs. "Well, since we're clearly taking a break from our studying, do you want to like go watch a movie or something while we eat? Pizza should be here right away."
Addie shrugged, this studying session was clearly going to hell, but they had at least gotten through all of her flashcards earlier, so that was something at least. How much of that Eddie was going to remember she had no idea, but she figured she could make him actually study with her tomorrow…probably.
Addie went and plopped on the couch as Eddie dug through his stack of movies. "How about The Dark Crystal?" Eddie asked.
Addie sprawled out on the couch so her back was against one of the arm rests and her feet were across the length of the couch, "You know, I've never actually seen it."
"What?!" Eddie exclaimed, "It's one of the best fantasy films ever made and you've never seen it?!"
Addie shrugged, "I don't usually watch lots of movies. Robin and Steve gave me shit the other day for not having seen Gremlins."
Eddie fell back as if shot, and Addie merely rolled her eyes. "Okay, stop being so dramatic and play the goddamn movie."
Eddie put in the vhs tape and got the tv set up. Just before he was about to press play the doorbell rang. He went to pay for the pizza, brought the boxes over to the couch and set them on the coffee table.
"Want another beer?" He asked.
Addie thought about it, she knew she shouldn't drink too much more, but it wasn't like she had any place to be tomorrow. "Sure."
Eddie grabbed another six pack out of the fridge and set them down beside the pizzas. He looked down at Addie and how she was spread across the couch, "You gonna move?"
Addie reached over to grab a beer and shook her head no.
Eddie sighed, picked up Addie's leg, sat down on the couch, and placed her legs over his lap. When Addie didn't protest to this new setup, he reached over and pressed play on the remote.
As they watched the movie, Addie had to admit, it was a pretty amazing film. She had never seen anything like it. The only problem was the beer and pizza were making her sleepy.
About halfway through the film Addie moved so she was sitting up, and put her legs up on the coffee table. She was hoping the more upright position would possibly help her stay awake.
She was, however, mistaken. She felt her eyes growing heavier, and before she knew it she was falling asleep.
"Hey sleepy head, wake up, you're going to miss the ending," she heard a voice softly whispering to her.
Addie opened her eyes and realized she was no longer sitting upright. At some point during the movie she had fallen asleep, and was currently resting her head on Eddie's lap.
She jolted up and her cheeks turned red, "Fuck, I'm sorry. How long was I out?"
Eddie gave her a funny look, "Just a few minutes. It's no worries, you were falling over so I let you lay down."
Addie looked away and pushed her hair behind her ear. "Well, thanks. Sorry for falling asleep during one of your favorite movies."
Eddie had paused the movie at some point so he leaned over and grabbed the remote, "It's not a big deal. Let's just finish it now."
Addie curled up on the far end of the couch to finish the movie. Once the movie was done, Addie suggested doing a bit more studying seeing as it was only barely 8 o'clock. Eddie told Addie there was no way in hell he was doing anymore studying that night.
"Well…" said Addie, "I guess I should bike back home then."
Eddie looked her over, "You sure you can manage that? I don't think you're totally sober yet?"
"What? I'm totally fine! See?" Addie stood up abruptly from the couch and tried to do a spin. However, her foot caught on the edge of the table and she fell back down, and landed on Eddie.
Eddie's reflexes were quick enough that he managed to throw his hands out and catch Addie's arms to slow her down and make sure they didn't slam their heads into each other.
Eddie was gripping Addie's arms as she laid there on top of him. Their faces were nearly pressed together, and both of them were breathing heavily.
"Totally fine, hey Firecracker?" Eddie remarked, letting out a soft laugh.
Addie just nodded her head in response. She knew she must be squishing Eddie, but he either didn't seem to notice or he didn't mind.
"I have another question for you." Eddie said softly.
Addie let out a 'Hm?' noise but otherwise said nothing, her eyes locked on Eddie. Her heart was beating so fast.
"What would you do if I kissed you?" He asked, glancing down at her lips.
"I…" Addie hesitated for just a moment, "I would probably let you."
Eddie's eyes darkened. He took Addie's arms and placed them on either side of his head, so she was now hovering above him, her one knee resting in between his legs on the couch.
He glanced down at her lips again, and ran a hand down her cheek. He placed his hand on her cheek and leaned in. His lips were just brushing over hers when -
They both heard the sound of keys jangling at the door. Eddie's uncle had returned. Addie quickly threw herself down onto the opposite side of the couch.
Eddie's uncle walked in and looked around the room. His eyes paused on the books on the table, the beer cans in the kitchen, and finally on the two of them on the couch.
"You're back early," Eddie remarked, running a hand through his hair.
His uncle just grunted in acknowledgement, "You kids get any actual studying done?"
Addie stood up from the couch, "Oh yes! We went through all the notes for our world history test already. Eddie knew a lot more than I thought he would."
His uncle grunted again, "Well, that's good." He turned to Eddie, "I'm gonna go shower."
Eddie gave him a wave as he walked back to the bathroom.
As soon as he was out of the room Addie got up and started packing. Eddie stood up as well, "Woah, are you leaving now?"
Addie cleared her throat, "Um, yeah, probably. I mean we're done studying for the day so I should probably head home. I don't want Aunt Claudia to worry."
"Well hey, do you want me to drive you and your bike home?"
Addie waved him off, "No, don't worry about it. The fresh air will help me sober up completely." Her stuff was all packed up so she threw her backpack on and headed towards the door.
Eddie hopped in front of her, "Woah, hey, why do I feel like you're running off in a hurry for some reason?"
Addie gave him a confused look, "What? I'm not. I just figure I should head home."
Eddie gave her a knowing look, but leaned against the wall so he was out of her way and crossed his arms, "So are we still studying tomorrow?"
Addie opened the door, "Uh, yeah. We can study."
"Do you want to meet here again?"
"Uh, is there anywhere, maybe, like outside we could study?" Addie asked.
Eddie smiled, "I have just the place. Meet me here tomorrow at 2 and I can take you there."
Addie almost demanded to know where they were going to go, but stopped herself. Instead she just nodded and ran down the steps to get her bike. Right before she biked away she looked back and saw Eddie standing there, watching her.
Oh god, she thought to herself, what had she gotten herself into?
