Matsu's Tales of the Past

Hi. It's Matsu. Aurora and Atlas asked me do a segment just like them…

I didn't know what to do, so I figured I would tell you about how things were when I was a child.

I've been dead for several years and am older than even the Wizard King himself.

My memory is a bit foggy, but I do explicitly remember something you'd all find interesting. Everyone knows the elves were once a very prevalent race in the Clover Kingdom.

However you might not know something rather interesting. There is another race, unique from human and elves alike. I can't remember too many details, but they were ethereal beings who from time to time came down from the sky to give prophecies and predictions to mere mortals.

My memory stops there...sorry.

Thank you for listening…

The Ace Kingdom is a newer kingdom. As such, there are not many towns or cities.

However, almost everyone in the realm knows of the magnificent capital of the Ace Kingdom: Navescia. By far the most bustling city in the Ace Kingdom, it's the northernmost city known for being the first city allowed to build just outside the border of the Spade Kingdom.

As such, there are many Spade Kingdom influences in Navescia. The general architecture is very gothic, however unlike the Spade Kingdom, Navescia buildings are very colorful, especially since its mayor is known for his colorful magic…

Navescia houses many important buildings and groups. In Navescia you can find the Sorcerer Soldier offices, housing, and basically all operations relating to Sorcerer Soldiers (sans the very special and exclusive castle division, who of course reside in the royal city with the rest of the kingdom's royalty). There's also the mayor's offices, Guild of Adventurers headquarters, the famous Sukehiro Inn, the Diplomat Meeting building, and many many more.

The most famous building of all in Navescia is the Tyrian Arena, which a certain Sorcerer Soldier squad uses for training. Regular citizens or other Sorcerer Soldiers can sign up to fight against a member of that certain squad. This is how that certain squad trains.

Additionally, the arena is also to be used to house the upcoming Sorcerer Soldier Squad Exams. The captain of the certain squad will be away for the event, so rumor has it another Sorcerer Soldier captain will be giving out the exam.

Navescia, like many other cities in the Ace Kingdom, is surrounded by a giant wall. This is due to increasing worries of an attack from a certain group. The wall is about 70 ft. tall and made of strong magically reinforced material. There are always soldiers stationed at the wall in order to keep watch and let people inside.

Our heroes' carriage approaches the wall, and two soldiers quickly go up to the driver to verify that she's allowed inside.

Ever so curious, Atlas pops his head out of the window to eavesdrop.

"State your purpose." The first soldier says. She's clearly the more serious of the two, with the other soldier looking wildly disinterested.

"Oh, come on, Lia." The driver rolls her eyes. "I already had to drive all the way to the Border Forest, please let me in without any trouble."

Atlas examines the soldier known as Lia, and his jaw almost drops.

She's smoking.

The girl looks to be about 20 years old, with a tall and slender stature. Her hair is pure black and falls in waves just below her decently sized bust. The sides of her hair are pulled back and secured with a blood red, jeweled pin. Her eyes are a slate grey color. Atlas also can't help but notice that her left arm and hand are covered in small scars.

Lia wears one of the Sorcerer Soldier squad robes (Atlas can't tell which one it is), with a maroon tunic dress cinched with a wide, black belt. Under the dress are black tights that disappear into black knee-high boots.

Lia...Lia. Huh. It sounds familiar to Atlas, but he can't put his finger on why. He's sure he doesn't know anyone named Lia, and yet Lia still sounds like the name, or maybe the nickname, of someone he's heard about before.

Lia snorts and waves a hand. "I'm just messing with you, Shizuka. How was the drive?"

Shizuka is another pretty girl with a short stature but strong looking body. Her eyes are a bright reddish pink colour and her long red hair appears to have a near permanent frizz to it.

She wears the same robes as Lia, with a witch's hat.

Wait, does that mean-

"It's whatever." Shizuka responds. "I take what I'm given. Even though it's tiring, this is the stuff that newbies get, right?"

Lia nods. "Correct. We all have to prove ourselves to Captain Aichi before he lets us do anything…'exciting'. You know how he is after all…"

The other soldier finally starts to speak up. "Tell me Lia, after all these years of being a part of our squad, you are still stuck with guard duty?" He chuckles.

Lia crosses her arms, glaring at her comrade. "I choose to do the missions that don't involve a lot of people, as I prefer being alone better than anything. And you're one to talk, Quinn, you're basically in the same position as me."

Quinn is a man with very conventionally attractive features. He has a toned body with long flowy blonde hair, fair skin, and crystal blue eyes. He is also taller than Lia, probably standing at 6'2".

Once again, he wears the same robes as Shizuka and Lia. Other than that, he wears a yellow button up shirt that has the top buttons opened to reveal his chest, black pants, and black boots.

Atlas doesn't know squat about Quinn. However, he gets the sense he's a very cocky guy.

"You've been in the squad longer than both of us." Shizuka remarks. "You should really step up the plate."

"You know why you're still stuck with guard duty?" Lia questions him. "Because you're constantly late. Even today I had to wait almost half an hour for you to show up! I mean I can obviously do this on my own, but what if some villain showed up? I'd be in trouble, and so would you...with Captain Aichi."

Quinn rolls his eyes. "Oh please, ever so dramatic. With my strength and smarts, I would've arrived just in time to save you, damsel in distress."

Shizuka cringes. "No, Quinn. Just no…"

"Anyways," Lia sighs. "Is everyone in the carriage going to participate in the exams?"

Shizuka nods. "Our next stop is Sukehiro Inn to drop them off for the night. Almost all of them are exhausted from the journey, and I am too. Quinn, you're joining me in the morning to drop them off at the arena, right?"

Atlas quickly retreats back into the carriage to look around, and sure enough, nearly everyone else is knocked out. The sole exceptions are himself and Glynis, the latter of which is paying no mind at all as she hums a song while reading a book titled 'How to Communicate with Peasants'.

Quinn nods. "But of course. I have to say, I am highly interested in this next generation. I personally asked Captain Aichi to put me on exam duty, and after some...begging, he agreed!"

"Nervous one of them will take your spot as the self proclaimed strongest member of the squad?" Lia smirks.

"N-no…" Quinn refutes. "I just want to see more of them! Ah, and Shizuka, I will be bringing along our friend Valeo."

Shizuka scoffs. "Ew. That guy is so slimy, even more than you, Quinn. I still don't know how someone like him ended up in our squad."

"He's not that bad," Quinn scoffs. "He's just young."

"You only defend him because he likes you." Shizuka rolls her eyes. "But whatever. Just keep him away from me tomorrow, capiche?"

"If you insist." Quinn shrugs. "I heard some of the White Dove ladies will be on duty tomorrow as well. Perhaps you'd enjoy their company?"

Shizuka blushes. "S-shut up…"

Lia shakes her head. "We've been talking for far too long. You may enter, Shizuka."

Lia and Quinn wave goodbye to Shizuka and return to their posts. Shizuka sighs and nods, picking up the reigns of the carriage and driving it through the gate.

The sound of the carriage going from ground to pavement startles many of the mages awake, and they immediately start looking out the window to observe the city of Navescia.

The pavement of Navescia is made of brick, and because it's such a busy city, there's an entire section of the street dedicated to just carriage transportation (again, something that hasn't been seen in the realm before). Of course, there are still sidewalks for walking and a section of the street for walking.

Despite being nighttime, there are still plenty of people out and about. Mages, civilians, and even some nobles can be spotted doing some late night shopping and drinking.

"Wow, it's so pretty!" Pollo beams. "I've only ever gotten to see it from the outside, so this is so cool!"

"Hm." Aurora crosses her arms. "Still doesn't beat Kikka. Where I would much rather be right now…"

"Tch, Kikka or this Navescia place has nothing on the cities in the Heart Kingdom." Admetus snorts. "But whatever, how long until we get to that shitty inn?"

Aim sighs, appearing uninterested in her surroundings, most likely due to frequently visiting Navescia in the past. "Sukehiro Inn is not just some regular old inn, you know."

"What's that mean?" Joel questions. "The word 'inn' makes it sound like it'd be a regular old inn…"

Aim facepalms. "Just wait until you see it before making your judgements…"

Matsu is still looking in the direction of Sherry, who he can feel is looking at him. He reminds himself that he has to talk to her sometime tonight or tomorrow. He fears she may have seen something she wasn't supposed to…

Jasper is also observing the sight. He is sitting behind Matsu and has noticed Sherry's staring for quite a while. He turns to Ru who is sitting next to him. "Isn't it odd how the princess keeps looking at him like that?"

Ru nods, robbing his chin in thought. "Indeed. It's like a mixture of curiosity, suspicion, and...obsession?"

"Obsession?" Jasper repeats with a chuckle. "I would not go that far. After all, Matsu appears to be just a regular old noble. I'm sure Princess Sherry has already been introduced to someone much more fitted to her status...right? At least that's how I've heard they operate in the Clover Kingdom."

Ru shrugs his shoulders. "I'm not too sure. I'm not from there, but based on some stories I've heard about the current monarchy, I think they're trying to change for the better! Which hopefully means letting people choose who they want to love rather than choosing for them."

Jasper smiles. "That'd be nice! But still, Sherry and Matsu…"

"Sherry and Matsu…" Ru repeats, still rubbing his chin.

"Sherry and Matsu." Matsu turns around. "What about the two of us?"

Jasper and Ru nearly jump out of their skin as the purple haired boy's face gazes upon them. They know he can't see them per se, but he can still sense them.

"N-Nothing!" Ru nervously laughs. "Don't worry about it!"

"Yeah, we were just listing random names!" Jasper agrees.

"Ok." Matsu shrugs, turning back around.

The two boys sigh in relief.

"We have to remember, he can hear better than any of us." Ru sighs.

"Trust me, I won't forget…" Jasper nods.

Aurora is fascinated with her grimoire, flipping through the pages (despite them all being empty). She also has her book of souls open. "If only I knew where Rades was…"

"Whatcha up to, Aurora?" Pollo smiles, turning around in his seat to look at her.

"Oh, nothing much." Aurora responds with a warm smile. "I'm just searching for a spell to make you disappear."

"Oh, that sounds c-, wait what?" Pollo frowns.

Aurora rolls her eyes. "Just leave me alone, Maniwa. I have a lot of work to do if I want to figure this out myself."

"By yourself, huh…" Pollo repeats. "Why is it you want to do it by yourself anyways? It never hurts to ask for help, you know."

"I don't need help!" Aurora quickly answers. "I mean, how would you be able to help me anyways?"

"By being a friend!" Pollo enthusiastically says. "Sometimes all you need is a friend to help cheer you on; and it ends up working wonders. A little support goes a long way, especially when you've spent your entire life doing things by yourself."

"I don't do everything by myself." Aurora refutes. "I have my brothers…"

"...And?" Pollo says. "Surely you have more than just your brothers...right?"

Aurora blushes, glancing down at her book. "I...I can't have friends. It's just too much work. They get in the way of my studies, and distract me from my goals. If I want to be the Wizard Queen one day, I have to work extra hard in everything I do. I look at Atlas who is constantly fooling around and ignoring his work, and it makes me want to work even harder! Friends are nice to have and I do have a few pleasant acquaintances, but I'm sure both Asta and King Yuno would agree that the quickest way to the top is hard work and dedication!"

Pollo suddenly laughs, earning a confused look from Aurora. "Hahahaha! King Yuno might agree with your sentiment, but there's no way the Wizard King would agree that not having friends helps you on your way to the top."

Aurora frowns. "How do you know? You're not even from the Clover Kingdom. I've spent my whole life analyzing Asta and Yuno's achievements in my attempt to be like them."

"Well, you might have studied their achievements, but what about their lives?" Pollo questions.

"Of course." Aurora nods. "It's important to know the early beginnings of your idols."

"Ah, that's where you went astray then." Pollo realizes. "You can't just focus on their early life and achievements. There's something else you're forgetting."

"What do you mean?" Aurora asks, slightly dropping her frown.

"I grew up in an orphanage." Pollo reveals. "And so, life was kind of depressing. To help cheer us up, the staff at the orphanage often told us stories about two very famous orphans, who you know very well.

They'd tell us about how they grew up just like us, and how they grew into the people they are today. I guess it was to basically tell us: 'You can be anything you want to be! Being an orphan won't stop you.'.

But, more than that, they told us about the support they had from their squadmates after joining the Magic Knights. The fun they had together, the laughs they shared. That was basically to tell us: 'They found their family. They may not be related by blood, but they found people to support and love them just like family does. You can try your hardest to progress in life by yourself, but it's always easier with someone else'.

Anyways, we basically didn't just focus on Asta and Yuno, but the friends and people who helped guide them along the way too. That's what I'm trying to tell you, Aurora. It's easy to do things alone, but you'll have a much funner and more enjoyable time if you make some friends along the way!"

Aurora bites her lip, taking in everything that Pollo is saying. Finally, she looks up at him and says…

"Funner isn't a word."

"…"

At last, the carriage arrives at the Sukehiro Inn.

"Hm, let's see what this shit show looks like." Admetus grumbles, sticking his head out the window. "WHAT THE HELL?!" He yells as soon as he does so.

"What's all the fuss about?" Joel questions, doing the same. "OH MOTHER OF PEARL!"

"Can you two look out the window and describe it to me?" Matsu asks. "I want to be able to experience the 'excitement', but unfortunately, I am blind."

"O-Ok…" Atlas begrudgingly looks out the window and almost falls out the window. "IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!"

"Oh please, don't be so dramatic, brother." Aurora rolls her eyes, also looking out the window. "I-"

The reason everyone is so shocked is because the Sukehiro Inn isn't just some 'shitty old inn'.

It's an entire resort: with several luxury villas for the richest citizens, but also includes a casino with several bars for normal citizens to gamble and drink all night long.

"W-why the hell is this place called an inn?!" Admetus asks. "It's practically a fucking village!"

"It's almost the size of our garden back at home, Admetus!" Glynis beams. "Just a little bit smaller, I think."

"I told you to just wait." Aim smirks, enjoying the reactions.

"Hey, I've been wondering something." Ru asks as the carriage comes to a stop. "Why is it called the Sukehiro inn? Sounds like an odd name for a place in the Ace Kingdom."

Jasper nods. "I agree. Though, the name Sukehiro does sounds awfully familiar?"

"Oh? Does it now?"

Everyone jumps as soon as they hear an unfamiliar voice from outside the carriage.

"Come on out and I can explain."

The voice continues.

"Sukehiro Inn!" Atlas realizes.

"Does that mean…" Aurora's eyes widen.

Atlas is the person closest to the carriage door, so he quickly gets out of his seat and runs for it. He grabs the handle, swings it open to reveal…

"You are not who I thought you'd be but I'm still pleased with this outcome!" Atlas beams, getting on one knee. "It is an honor to meet you, I am the patriarch of the Edelias family."

"Stop lying." Matsu says, also stepping out of the carriage. "Who are you? You're strong."

The person laughs, putting their hands on their hips. "Am I? What makes you say that?"

"Your Magic Energy…" Matsu says. "It's stronger than anyone I've ever met."

"Ah, you must not have met a lot of people." The person answers. "Trust me, there are people leagues ahead in power in this kingdom. I'm sure you'll meet some of them along your journey."

Aurora exits the carriage next, also bowing to her knees when she sees who it is. "O-Oh my goodness! It is so very nice to meet you!"

"Ah, no need for formalities." The person assures, beckoning for Aurora and Atlas to stand up.

Admetus helps his cousin exit the carriage, the girl smiling immediately as she sees the person. "Hi there! My name is Glynis Boltor from the Heart Kingdom. I know you are a peasant, however, you may speak to me like one of your own!"

"Glynis, they aren't a peasant…" Admetus sighs. "They're related to the Wizard King, I think…"

"Not by blood, but I do have a fondness for Asta, yes." The person nods.

"Oh, then maybe they are a peasant." Admetus shrugs.

"Shut your whore mouth!" Aurora snaps. "You are in the presence of nobility!"

"Nobility?" Ru and Jasper both say as they exit the carriage.

"From where?" Ru questions.

"The Clover Kingdom." Atlas answers. "One of the most esteemed houses. The House R-"

"Can we go to our rooms already?" Aim complains as she exits. "I am so tired."

"I'm hungry." Pollo adds, following her. "I could use a really nice juicy steak right about now. Oh! And Hage Village pot-potatoes, that sounds so good!" He drools.

"There will surely be plenty of food prepared for you upon request." The person nods. "All applicants of the exams will be placed in a special housing unit during the duration of the exam. I hope you all have gotten used to each other, because you'll be sharing a room for the next few days."

"Not the sharing the room." Aim frowns. "I need my beauty rest and I can't get any with these loud group of idiots."

"No need to worry." The person chuckles. "It's not what you think. You'll still have your room to sleep in, but you'll be sharing facilities like a great room, cooking area, and bathing room with each other."

"Well that's a relief." Joel sighs happily as he exits the carriage. "I'm used to being alone, I don't think I'd be able to sleep with so many people watching me…"

"Even if you're alone, someone still might be watching you." Matsu says ominously.

Joel slowly moves away from him.

"The disrespect while in front of such a famous noble is extraordinarily out of pocket." Atlas frowns.

"Exactly." Aurora says. "I mean come on, you guys, it's the-"

"Can someone help me?" Sherry says from inside the carriage. My dress is caught on the door handle!"

Pollo and Ru go back to help the princess, and also help her carefully exit the carriage. Sherry thanks them and looks up, her face immediately lighting up as she sees who is there to greet them.

"I wasn't expecting to see you here!" Sherry smiles. "It's a pleasure!"

"Ah, little Sherry." The person smiles. "I thought I saw your name on the list. Your uncle would've killed me if I hadn't personally welcomed you, so thank the Gods I caught you in time...ever since Asta has become the Wizard King, he's honestly become a little unnerving." The person uncomfortably remarks.

Sherry giggles. "Oh, I know. Uncle Asta doesn't really mess around when it comes to me and Dious, that's for sure. But I'm really happy to see you, Auntie Char!"

"Charlotte." Charlotte Roselei corrects, putting a hand on her forehead. "How many times do I have to tell people...even Yami won't stop calling me by that name."

"Don't worry, Ms. Charlotte Roselei, I'll be sure to respect your name." Atlas grins. "You may be old now, but you're still smoking so I'll be sure to listen to you!"

"OLD?!" Charlotte repeats with a gasp. "I am not old! I'm just older than you, that's all! But I'm still young and virtuous!"

"Young?" Admetus repeats. "I dunno, I think shark teeth is right. You look about fifty, yeah?"

Charlotte's eye twitches. "Anyways, let's change the subject...It's nice to meet all of you. My name is Charlotte Roselei, of the noble House Roselei. I am the former captain of the Blue Rose Knights and the current co-owner of the Sukehiro Inn."

"Is the other co-owner Yami Sukehiro?" Matsu asks. "I've heard of him before."

Charlotte shakes her head. "Oh Gods no. Yami does not have the interest in running the inn: he prefers playing in the casino. And anyways, he has too many duties as a diplomat to be spending time running the Sukehiro Inn as well. I'm sure you'll meet the other co-owner someday, he just tends to be a bit busy…"

"Then why is it called the Sukehiro Inn?" Joel questions. "Is the other co-owner's last name Sukehiro?"

Charlotte immediately blushes. "Um, no...it's just that Yami helped found the inn and...IammarriedtohimsotechnicallymylastnameisSukehirobutIamstilltooembarassedbyhimtocallmyselfbyit."

"What was that?" Joel nervously laughs.

"IammarriedtohimsotechnicallymylastnameisSukehirobutIamstilltooembarassedbyhimtocallmyselfbyit." Charlotte says again.

"Forget about it…" Joel sighs.

"Ahem," Charlotte clears her throat. "It's been a long day for you all. The other groups from the grimoire ceremony will be arriving soon, so let's get out of their way. I'll show you to your room now."

Everyone eagerly gathers whatever belongings they had and quickly follow Charlotte to their temporary room.

Atlas turns around, taking one last look at Shizuka, who looks dead tired. He makes a mental note to remember the trio of Shizuka, Lia, and Quinn, and quickly follows after the others.

"Wow, it's even more beautiful on the inside!" Glynis remarks. "Even if it's the housing of peasants, I, a royal, can still appreciate its beauty!" She continues, still reading out of her book.

Admetus slaps it out of her hands.

"This is the Legolant floor plan." Charlotte remarks. "Heavily inspired by both Yami's country as well as a certain member of the Black Bulls, this is one of our most popular rooms."

The room the group is staying in is far from just being a regular old room. It's almost the size of a mansion, with all the rooms you'd expect to see, along with a bedroom for everyone.

The room is very heavily inspired by Yami, with shoji doors instead of regular doors and light wood flooring. Additionally, there's inspiration from a certain someone as well, with the colors white, black, and gold, filling the room from the decor to the furniture.

Atlas and Aurora sigh in relief as they spot their luggage they packed earlier that day.

"I'm dying to get out of these clothes." Atlas says. "I've felt stuffy all day."

Charlotte nods. "I can imagine. Well, I'll leave you all to it. Your rooms are marked with your names. Ah, before I leave, I should explain how tomorrow will work."

Everyone quiets down and eagerly turns toward her.

"Tomorrow is Day 1 of the exams. It will consist of the opening ceremony, and the first round of the exams. I'm not to disclose exactly what you'll be tested on, but just know you should be ready to do physical activity.

The exams will be conducted mainly by the captain of the Amber Owls squad. However, he will have assistance by some of the other captains and some other Sorcerer Soldiers.

After round 1, there will be an elimination phase, where those who haven't passed will be asked to leave. If you find yourself in this position, you will return to the Sukehiro Inn, where a Sorcerer Soldier will help explain what happens next. For a brief version: you'll be going back home.

If you do pass, you'll return to your room and get ready for Day 2! Is that clear?"

"Yes ma'am!" The group answers.

Charlotte smiles. "Good. Well, get some rest. Someone will be here to collect you in the morning. Have a good night."

Everyone bids farewell to Charlotte as she takes her leave.

Matsu motions to his bandages. "I need to take this off. Can someone show me to my room?"

"Of course b-" Atlas is cut off by a certain girl.

"I can help!" Sherry says. "A royal never backs down from an opportunity to help someone in need." She says with a smile.

Atlas grins. "Ok then! Take him away, Sherry!"

She nods, taking Matsu's hand and starting towards the hallway with the bedrooms.

Matsu grows silent, knowing what he must do.

Meanwhile, the others are getting situated.

"All my stuff is still here, good!" Aurora smiles. "I'm going to go unpack in my room. Goodnight, everyone."

"Night, sis!" Atlas says. As she passes by him, he whispers: "Talk in the morning about Matsu, ok?"

Aurora nods. "Got it."

"Gah, I'm hungry but tired." Pollo complains, patting his bag. "Dang. That steak is going to have to wait. For now, I'll eat these snacks in my bag…" He mutters, walking to his room as he rubs his sleepy eyes.

"I need to see what this room looks like!" Jasper says happily. "A fancy room from the Ace Kingdom: it must be nice!" He quickly makes his way to his room.

"I call the bath!" Aim says on her way to her room. "Gentlemen and ladies, please allow me some privacy." She grimaces as she finishes her sentence, clutching her head.

"One of my first nights away from home!" Ru remarks. "It's exciting but a bit nerve wracking…" He says, entering his room.

"Now Glynis," Admetus sighs, turning to his cousin as they walk to the hallway. "Don't complain about the rooms being too small."

"Oh, don't worry!" Glynis giggles. "I already prepared myself to sleep in a small room by sleeping in my closet the day before we left!"

"Phew, it's been a long day…" Joel sighs. "I need rest or I think I'll pass out…" He dramatically says, walking to his room.

Finally alone, Atlas grabs his bag and looks down at his hand.

He frowns as the eyes open.

"What do you want?" He asks. "I'm too tired to talk with you."

"HAHAHAHA, relax, relax…" The voice says. "I'm just here to let you know that the souls are getting HUNGRY! You need to eat a soul, QUICK!"

Atlas groans. "Damned if I do, damned if I don't...how many days do I have left?"

"Hm…" The voice thinks for a second. "TWO! If you don't eat something by then, BYE BYE!" The voice laughs.

"Yeah, yeah…" Atlas mutters, walking to his room. "I know."

"And this is your bed." Sherry says, guiding Matsu to his bed.

The girl had taken the liberty to not only show Matsu to his room but also show him around his room. She wanted to make sure he knew where everything was just in case.

"Thank you." Matsu says, sitting down. "I've now memorized the floor plan of the room. The perks of being blind is you obtain a very great memory."

Sherry blushes. "U-Um, of course. Was there anything else you needed?"

Matsu looks down at his hands, remembering his grimoire. He knew Sherry had to have seen what happened, with how much she stares at him.

He looks up at her. "...Will you say anything?"

"I, uh…" She narrows her eyes. "...No. But...can you tell me...why?"

Matsu shakes his head. "Not tonight. But one day...you'll understand. You're just not ready yet."

Sherry nods. "...I understand. Goodnight, Matsu."

She opens the door and takes her leave, leaving Matsu alone.

Matsu sighs, clutching his face. "Finally alone…"

He gets up from his bed and walks towards the dresser in his room. Slowly, he brings his hands up to his face and begins unraveling the bandages on his eyes.

As he removes them, more and more of his face becomes visible. Until finally, his face is completely uncovered.

The skin around Matsu's eyes is not only burned, but he also bears an X shaped scar on his right eye. Both of his irises are incredibly pale, almost translucent: the sign of his blindness. Matsu puts a hand on his right eye.

"I wonder...If I'm still as ugly as they used to say." He whispers to himself. He then shakes his head and walks back towards his bed. He lays down and stares up at the ceiling.

"I can't wait to dream...the only time I get to see. Even if it's a nightmare…"
