Disclaimer: I don't own Fuery or FMA!
Author's Note: Finally! I wrote a Fuery piece! This takes place when he was a kid and the game they are picking teams for is baseball or a similar game. Read and Review if you like but I'll deflect any Flames back to the Flamer! Thanks!
Always the Last
A hot breeze blew across the field, stirring up the dust and ruffling the hair of the small group of children that stood in the center of the field. Two boys, one with brown hair and the other with red hair and a baseball cap faced each other. Finally the red head took off his cap and gestured at the other kids, "I picked first last time Tony."
Tony chewed on his bottom lip for a moment before pointing to one of the other boys, "Frank you're on my team this time. Alright Pat, you pick a player."
Pat analyzed the other kids before making his choice, "Mike, you play for me."
Back and forth they went, each boy picking out the players for their teams until finally only three kids were left standing alone in the center field. Tony looked over the last few with a slightly disgusted grimace. Was this all that was left? A girl, a sick kid and the neighborhood nerd? Finally he pointed at the girl, "Okay Jo."
The nerd as he was known along with the names "Bookworm", "Teacher's Pet" and last but not least "Goody Two Shoes", adjusted his glasses and looked at the other boy who was coughing slightly.
Kain was never one for wishing ill on others but just this once he hoped that Jake's almost constant cough would work in Kain's favor, assuring him that he'd be picked over Jake and for once he wouldn't be the last kid left.
Looking at Pat he could barely keep the begging out of his eyes, "Please say Kain…please say Kain…" he whispered the mantra under his breath though it had never worked in the past.
After several agonizing minutes that felt like years to Kain Pat pointed at Jake, "I guess you're on my team Jake." Jake grinned weakly and walked slowly over to where Pat's other team members were but not before shooting a sad smile at Kain.
Kain returned it, knowing what was coming next. Toby shot a glare at Pat before sighing, "Guess you're on my team this time Kain."
Kain tried to smile as he walked over to the group but he felt like crying. It wasn't fair being the unpopular kid. Standing by his teammates as Toby shouted out who'd play which position his mind started to drift, already knowing that he'd end up on the sidelines until, and if, the game was so far gone that there'd be no way for him to screw it up. Bending down he pretended to tie his shoe, chewing on his bottom lip as he did so.
Someday he'd be older and people would start to appreciate his talents instead of laugh at them. He'd make friends who actually liked him then. That would be nice. Kain straightened back up, a smile on his face. The thought made him happy enough to face this game. So what that he wasn't popular right now? Someday, someday soon that would change.
And that was a very pleasant thought indeed.
Fin.
