There were forty chairs evenly spaced out and lined up in one of the many large green rooms within the Vegas theatre that this years Vegas week took place. Forty phenomenal dancers sat in each of those chairs anxiously awaiting to hear their fates. Only fifty percent of them would make it to the live shows. Zay stood there dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt as he talked to each of the dancers before sending them off either one by one or in pairs to see the judges. Charlie and Maya were seated just a few chairs away from each other as they both waited impatiently. They were in the middle of the chairs that were set out so they'd find out around the halfway point through the crowd.
Joshua Matthews on the other hand was in the very last row of chairs. He'd be one of the last people to find out if they made it. Last night, Josh danced for his life. After disappointing the judges earlier in the jazz round, he had a lot to make up for. So he danced. He danced like he never did before. Hitting every single beat of his solo, Josh had to show them that he deserved to be there. That he deserved to make it to the very end of this competition.
Row by row, Josh watched dancers come back from the main stage either celebrating or solemn as they tried to hide their disappointment. He noticed when it was Maya's turn to go see the judges. He watched her intently from afar and just stared at the curtain she walked through and never broke concentration from it until she came back. When she returned Josh traced her face quickly to see if there was any sign of distress or happiness. When her eyes met his from across the room he instantly knew. She made it.
Maya's face broke into a joyous smile. She was grinning from ear to ear as everyone in the room found out she made it. Charlie smiled at her and gave her a congratulatory hug as he had made it as well. Yet Maya only had her focus on one person. Josh. She has yet to break eye contact with him. In the back of her mind she had Josh's words playing. "We can keep this private. No one else has to know."
Screw that. Maya pushed past Zay and Charlie and ran over to Josh. Josh quickly stood as Maya approached him. "What are you doing?" he whispered.
Maya looked at him and smiled. "Giving us a real chance."
Maya reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck as she planted a kiss right on his lips. Josh gleefully accepted the kiss and pulled away. "But what about the cameras? Staying focused? We don't even know if I made it."
"Honestly," Maya began. "Who gives a fuck? No matter how this goes I wanna do this with you by my side."
Josh looked down at Maya and smiled. He gave her a kiss on her forehead and held her tight with her head under his chin. He stepped out of his bliss for a moment and remembered that they were in a room full of both cameras and people. He took a quick glance around and spotted Charlie smirking joyfully and Zay smiling to himself as well as a few cameras pointed in their direction along with a few boom mics as well. He nestled his head back in to Maya's soft hair and whispered in her ear, "It's me and you Hart. Me and you."
The moment was over just as quick as it began. Quickly Josh found himself walking down the seeming never ending hallway as he prepared to find out if this was the end of his journey. Josh took each step carefully as he was eager yet dreading to find out his fate. Before he knew it, Josh was face to face with the judges. Ty, Leigh Anne, and Will looked back at him with polite smiled on their faces. "Hello Josh," Leigh Anne greeted.
Josh smiled back acknowledging his greeting. "Hi," he said nervously.
"From the moment you graced our stage with you presence we've been nothing but enthralled with your talent. You've had moments where you've shined and moments where your star has been a bit dim. Last night, you left it all out on the stage and for that alone you should be extremely proud of yourself."
"Thank you."
"I'm sure you've been keeping track of who's been making it and who's been leaving and I'm sure you already know that there are only two spots left in our top twenty for this seasons competition." Leigh Anne paused. "Josh you have a fight in you that we have not seen in this competition in a while. You have a natural gift and ability that is unreal. The judging panel believes in you immensely and trust me this was not an easy decision to make, choosing who would make it but you are one of our top twenty dancers. Congratulations."
Josh's jaw dropped. He was in utter disbelief. "Oh my god," he breathed. "Thank you so much!"
Josh backed out of the space slowly and stumbled down the hallway as he made his way back through the familiar set of curtains that Maya herself went through not too long ago. Josh grasped the curtain fabric in his hands before pulling it to the side as he walked out with his mouth agape. "I made it," he whispered. "I made it!"
Maya sat with Charlie by the pool as they waited for the rest of the top twenty to come out and celebrate. Maya laid back in a lounge chair as she let the hot Vegas sun tan her pale skin. Charlie looked over at her and chuckled. "So Josh huh?" he laughed.
Maya looked at Charlie out of the corner of her eyes and made a move to push him off his chair. "Shut up," she laughed.
Charlie dodged her attack and smiled. "I'm just saying it's cute. It's also really smart too. America is going to love it. That plus the amazing dance skills? You're gonna go far."
Maya sat up and looked at Charlie. "You know I'm not doing this for the competition right? I actually care about him."
Charlie nodded. "I know but do you think it's actually gonna work with you as his competition though? I've seen this show eat up relationships that were already established before they even came in to the competition. Do you think you and Josh are gonna make it?" Maya opened her mouth to speak but Charlie continued. "And it's not like I doubt you guys, I actually think you guys are very cute together. I just don't want you to lose sight of what you want here. This is my fourth time auditioning for this show and I just made it to the top twenty. You got it on your first try. Don't let him make you lose sight of this. Besides, your relationship is going to be the spectacle of the season for sure."
Maya crossed her arms over her chest and frowned as she thought deeply for a moment. "You think so?"
Charlie shrugged. "There's always a chance. Just-" he got cut off as he saw the rest of the dancers appear around the corner with drinks and music. "What's up guys!"
Charlie got up to meet some of the people carrying everything they needed as Josh came to Maya's side and kissed her cheek. "Hey gorgeous," he whispered. He cocked his head to the side as he sensed a slight change in Maya's demeanor. "Is everything okay?"
Maya snapped out of her head as she pushed Charlie's words away. "I'm great. Even better now that you're here." Maya kissed his lips and stood up. "Now come on we have celebrating to do. We in America's top twenty dancers after all."
Maya grabbed Josh's hand and led him to the pool as they all partied and danced all night celebrating their individual wins. Little did they know that would be the last semi normal night for a long time.
