Josh didn't know what to say when Maya asked him what would happen in the future. He hadn't thought that a wrench like this would be thrown in. Not to say that it's a bad thing it's just an unexpected thing. A thing that they now have to figure out. So they decided to put a pin in it until after the show. It was Josh's big night. Last week everyone voted out of the top four for who would win that night. Those votes combined with the votes from their performances from the night prior would determine who would be America's Best Dancer.
It was the final results night of the competition. Tonight was the night Josh's life could change forever and he was so extremely ready to see what that would entail. That night in between the results, both fan favorite and judge favorite routines from the season were being performed. Josh adjusted the white button up he was wearing for his routine tonight with Maya. Looking in the mirror Josh adjusted his untied red bowtie and smiled, feeling proud of himself.
"You look handsome," Maya said as she walked up behind him, her reflection now in the mirror. "You ready?"
"Of course we're gonna kill it," Josh answered.
Laughing Maya shook her head. "No, not that. Tonight everything changes," Maya breathed. "You could win."
Josh shook his head. "I don't even want to think about all of that right now. I'm way too nervous. I just want to dance with you one last time."
Josh turned and faced Maya while taking her hands into his. Maya looked at their intertwined hands and smiled sadly. "You make it sound like this will be the last time forever."
Josh kissed her forehead and pulled her in close. "I'm just soaking everything in." Leading her towards the stage he said, "Come on. Let's share the stage together one last time."
"And for the final time this season, Joshua and Maya!"
Zay's voice rang out as Maya and Josh stood in their respective positions on stage. Josh sat at the end of the stage with his legs hanging off of its edge. The music entered his ears as the bright lights fixed themselves upon him.
Looking up and getting into the moment of the song, cheers rang out from the crowd as Maya ran up behind him and gently placed her hands on his shoulders beginning the choreography.
A place to crash, I got you
No need to ask, I got you
Come and pick you up if I have to
Carrying on with choreography, they moved with a swiftness as Maya sat next to him and jumped up again to his side, trying to guide him upwards. As Josh followed each move with the next he soon stood next to her with the rhythm of the music.
What's weird about it
Is we're right at the end
And mad about it, just figured it out in my head
I'm proud to say I got you
As the music kicked in they busted out into their beautiful choreography. Hitting every beat and landing in every pocket of the dance. As they reached about halfway through the choreography, Josh slid across the ground and Maya was behind him to catch him in the dance.
For better or worse, I got you
The next few eight counts carried them in to everyone's favorite part of the dance. As the music began to build and their respective characters underwent their emotions everyone grew excited. In this dance, Maya was portraying Josh's best friend who comforting him after he was left at the altar. At the climax of the song as Maya began to leave, Josh would realize that the woman for him was here all along. As Maya continued her walk away from him, Josh, who was very into the characterization of this performance allowed a look that equated an epiphany to gloss over his face.
Sliding halfway across the stage to the beautiful blonde, he stood up in front of her planting a kiss square on her lips, leading them in to the last third of the dance. Maya leaped into his arms and Josh spun them around the stage until they reached its center. Completing the last few eight counts with a passion and drive the two never had before.
And when you need a hand to run to
For better or worse
I got you
Ending strong, Maya was at the foot of Josh's leg looking up at him as Josh was bent over meeting her halfway down. Breathing hard and feeling proud, Josh snuck one more un choreographed kiss onto Maya's lips before they ran off the stage. Once they were out of sight of cameras and other people they shared an earnest and passionate kiss. Pulling apart, they each whispered, "I love you." to each other before parting for the end of the show.
It quickly became time for final four to stand upon the stage. Maya looked on from the wings nervously as Josh and the other three dancers stood on stage with Zay. "This evening one of you will be crowned America's Best Dancer. The four of you have grown and proved yourselves to be timeless and phenomenal dancers as this competition has progressed. I have two names in this envelope. These two people will have placed in third and fourth place respectively."
The four dancers stood on stage holding hands as they waited excitedly and anxiously for the names to be called. "Ryan and Alexa!"
The crowd cheered for the two dancers as the cameras focused on them and reminisced on their times on the show through a cute video montage. Josh stood onstage in disbelief as he realized that was apart of the top two. He was either the runner up or the winner of the show. As the other two dancers parted ways on the stage, focus then again returned to Josh and Adam as Zay spoke to them both. "Gentlemen," he greeted. "Are you guys ready for this?"
Josh nodded eagerly as he had his arm wrapped around the man to his left. Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath he waited and waited for Zay to speak again. "America's Best Dancer is,"
Maya looked on in agony from the wings of the stage as she prayed and prayed for Josh's name to be called. This was the moment he had been waiting for and Maya knew that. No matter what, things were going to change tonight. His dreams were going to come true and Maya realized that she couldn't let anything stop that just as she realized for her own.
Relishing in the moment Josh closed his eyes and thought back on his entire journey in this competition. From getting the flyer from his mom to his first audition. This untrained dancer from Philly made it all the way to the end. Tuning back in to Zay's voice Josh opened his eyes and watched Zay open up the envelope in his hand. "America's Best Dancer is Josh!"
Canons erupted full of confetti and the room filled with cheers and applause as all the dancers from the season ran out and and lifted Josh up on their shoulders. In shock he looked around with an open mouth and joyous heart as a huge smile erupted on his face. Looking down at everyone around him as he sat high up on on their shoulders he spotted Maya on the outer edges of the crowd beaming up at him, proud as ever. Making his way down he walked straight to her and kissed her fiercely in front of everyone. "You won," she whispered with tears in her eyes.
Josh nodded, his forehead pressed against hers. "I won," he repeated back.
At that moment it was only the two of them. Staring at each other two hearts beating as one. This was his moment but they still had a decision to make and they both knew what they should do.
